REMOVING LEAD PAINT || Desk Makeover- Furniture Flip Collab- UGLY DUCKLING CHALLENGE

  • This video is my contribution to @DesertDIY 's collaboration, "The Ugly Duckling Challenge"! Our mission was to find the most hideous piece of furniture we could, and try to salvage it. I do that on a daily basis, so finding "the one" was difficult, (as I couldn't re-use footage from other flips) but I had this sad little desk in my storage room that I'd been avoiding, and decided it was finally time to tackle it.
PLAYLIST with all the other participants!
    • Ugly Duckling Challeng...
This piece was a challenge, alright. I had issues with the humidity and my paint and topcoat drying, found lead paint on the drawer, which I opted to remove in case an owner down the road tried to sand it off not knowing it was lead (due diligence).
In the end.. I'm not sure if I ended up with a swan... more like a fancy chicken, but I'm happy that it's SAVED from a landfill and has a new life. I could totally see this in a teen's bedroom for some reason! I wasn't suuuuper happy with the two tone paint, but after all the headache of doing this flip, I was NOT repainting it. haha And it's one of those things where the more I look at it, the more I DO like it. :-)

Hi Angie, I'm shaking my head watching your reveal. I've been on this planet over 65 years now, most spent creating in multiple mediums, and you always surprise me. I know it's not just skill, there is a lot of love that I'm looking at here. You are some kind of special young lady!!! This might be my fave to date. "swan is a stretch"-made me laugh. This was quite the challenge. My grandfather made my sister and me desks kind of like this, but instead of drawers, there was a two-tiered cabinet with a door. Ours were made of solid wood, and each was mounted to the studs in our bedrooms. Love those custom paint colors!

Memories of Grandpa...my Mom's father was always building something out of nothing...recycling used plywood into a desk would be right up his alley. Wow. You truly turned an ugly duckling into a, uh, an attractive duckling. I thought anything other than paint for the top was a waste of time and effort, but no--you elevated it and the whole piece to something worthy and useful. Goes to show that one can have a nice place on a very low budget through effort and skill.

As a auto body repair guy, I would recommend trying something called a finishing glaze to do large areas like that. There are several ones, metal glaze and blaze glaze are my favorite. They go on super smooth as they are very thin compared to filler and the sand ability is much better. Spreads much smoother as well.

@@traceylawrance5346 it would. It will go on silky smooth. It is a little more costly than just body filler, but for large areas that don't have to be super thick it would be hard to beat.

That was originally the strangest combination of woods that the "builder"/"carpenter" turned into a desk. Then who painted part of a drawer with lead paint--a horrible green lead paint to boot? The top and legs saved the day. You have guts to take that on. And so much effort transformed it. I wonder who bought it.

Before the putty: 50 years ago we would first apply a very very thin seal coat of varnish to seal the wood project this would bring out the true color of the wood. then the wood filler wood be applied to match the true color of the grain of the wood; after that we would add additional seal coats of varnish to finish the project.

This is so refreshing to find a younger person who tries to save the quality wood finishes, instead of buying a decent piece of furniture and destroying it with a shabby chic paint treatement product that requires no skill. You have SKILLS, and I applaud your efforts.
I presume that folks in Nova Scotia are similar to those in my part of Texas, when assessing this piece of furniture. My grandfather was retired house builder, and he built furniture for his grand children, so no fancy finishes, or veneers; no high dollar hardwood. Your piece looks very similar to what my grandfather did for his grand children.... with the exception of repurposing that piece of plywood with the lead paint. That was from something else, but they needed the wood to finish the desk. The 'pretty' desk top, might have been repurposed from another piece of furniture. I think this was meant to be a utilitarian piece of furniture that 'company' or visitors would never see... like a basement or a child's room.
This was done by a treasured family member, but it was not their best work, which is why they chose to give the piece away, instead of burning it in the winter stove. Thank you, for making so much out of this little piece.

This piece is definitely an ugly duckling. Its definitely a combination of 2 projects. That top came off a different piece and the base is made of someone's scrap pile. That being said the joinery is pretty good. The person that made it knew how to make a good box. And join the wood together properly. You have done a wonderful job in giving this piece a new life.

Without a doubt, so far this has been one of the biggest challenges I've seen yet. Not only was it ugly, but it was obviously made of cheap material. I did not think you were going to be able to salvage the top. Kudos on an excellent job doing just that and it turned out beautifully. Also you kept the design simple, and since the lines were plain also, your choice worked out very well as a finished look. Now all you need is a cute "matching" chair to go with it.

I would say that is a swan. It isn't perfect but that is part of it's charm. It's reclaimed. It has history. Hell I would market the before pics to show how amazing the difference is.

Wow!!!! This is stunning, yet again you have smashed this one out the park. I can’t believe it’s the same desk. 😍

Oh I don't know if swan is as much of a stretch as you think. This piece isn't just transformed in the outside, you gave it structural integrity doing this makeover! Beautiful! And regardless, you had me at bunnies 🤗

I like your choice of colors. It gives it a nautical feel, boating or naval branch of the military vibe. I could definitely see it in the captain's quarter of a sailing vessel.

Love the bold colour blocking, suits the masculine vibe I get from this desk!

It looks amazing and has a very masculine vibe. Would go great for a young man’s room.

I would say that was a swan after what you had to start. That’s a nice looking desk.

This is my third time watching this video. It is one of my favourites because the change is mind blowing. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of these ugly makeovers. You did wonders with it. That and I like watching desks in particular getting overhauled for some reason.

The two-tone looks really cool! I'd never get any work done if I had a fluffle of bunnies!

The wood is just beautiful. You really did a fine job transforming this desk. I think one color would have been better, but then I'm just one gal. Well done.

This desk looks so cool! I love that you revealed your oops with the stain. Even people who know what they are doing sometimes have problems arise. Great job taking a dump desk and turning it into a trendy workstation!
