  • Considered to be one of the first mega ships, the Norway was launched in 1960 as the ocean liner France. In 1980 Norwegian Cruise Line rebuilt the France as a cruise ship, the largest of her time, and renamed her Norway. In this video, they detail her 1990 renovation which was comprehensive as competition from Royal Caribbean's Sovereign class proved fierce. The Norway was scrapped in 2007/2008.

We took a cruise on the Norway back in ‘85. Loved that ship… I was 16 and still remember all the other kids I met… Stacy from Santa Clara, CA, Marklea from Tenn and Steve from F Lauderdale. We all met the first day of the cruise and hung out together for nearly every minute…such a great time.

For the cruise industry at that time, Norway was truly in a class all her own. She had the grace and elegance of her liner past combined with the carefree nature of cruising.

Box shape provides maximum inner spaces. Speed is no longer the criteria neither for passengers nor for the owners.

I love cruising today but this looks more enjoyable. Just elegant fun, dinner and dancing, and a little island hopping. No gimmicks, add ons etc, just a classic fun cruising vacation.

NOTICE how they made physical activity a main part of your experience. It wasn’t just drinking, gambling, massages and shopping. They literally encouraged and emphasized their fitness center, workout equipment, spaces for jogging, outdoor sports for kids and swimming pools. Also note how fit and healthy everyone looked in the 90s, it wasn’t just them handpicking the best looking people for their promo, people were literally skinnier and more toned in the 90s and throughout the 20th century.

Honeymooned on this lady of luxury in the spring of 1987. She was well serving and did not disappoint us at all and truly lived up to, and well beyond, our expectations. Fabulous to say the least!

I was on probably one of the last pre-refit Norway cruises (Christmas 1989). A lot of images on this video bring back fun memories, although I will say getting to our lower-deck inside cabin was quite the maze.

I had the privilege of going on this ship for a week and it was fantastic. I'll remember it forever. It felt like i was getting on the Titanic when approaching it minus the fear of sinking by the way it looked. It was a sight to see for sure.

Beautiful ship. I had finally just convinced my parents to even book a cruise at all the year of its fire, and it was between the Norway and the Voyager of the Seas. Well, the fire settled that contest. If it wasn't for Star Cruises buying out Norwegian, the Norway would probably still be here (but probably on its way to India anyway with the pandemic) today instead of a set of rail ties in China.

We sailed on her in the late 90s. Had a wonderful time! Took the cruise from Miami/St Maarten/St John & St Thomas. We skipped their Island due to a tropical storm (I don’t think it reached Hurricane strength)

The 1990 refit increased SS Norway's size to 76,049 tons, allowing her to reclaim the title of the largest passenger ship from the MS Sovereign of the Seas. She would hold on to the title until the completion of the Sun Princess in 1995.

This really was pretty much it for the old transatlantic liners turned into cruise ships. A shame this ship was scrapped, a missed opportunity much like the Olympic being scrapped. The QM1 is and was around, yes, but was already long laid up in Long Beach by this time - so not the same experience. The Norway was the last true transatlantic liner to be still sailing and its a shame NCL did away with her instead of preserving her. Something about this ship would be so much more attractive I’m sure to many than the new ships we have today. I’m looking to specifically sail on an 80’s or 90’s ship in order to get some semblance of the older ship feel since that’s about as old as it gets for cruise ships still sailing these days.

I use to be a crew member on bord of the SS NORWAY in the 80´s. Like a friend of mine uses to say: "Tears still come out of my eyes everytime I watch pictures of the SS NORWAY!." Great Ship. Great times.
