Floating Paradise Lost: Cruising Aboard The S.S. NORWAY

- Join Peter Knego as he joins the Steamship Historical Society of America's Long Island Chapter for a week of cruising the Caribbean aboard the magnificent S.S. NORWAY, the former French Line's FRANCE of 1961. The longest passenger ship ever built at 1,035 feet (until the advent of the QUEEN MARY 2), she was the epitome of sleekness with her finely sculpted hull and pair of elegantly winged funnels. Even with two decks of extra accommodations added in 1990, she still had one of the best profiles that ever put to sea. Her interior were a mashup of stylish original French fittings and a cornucopia of decorative elements added by Angelo Donghia and other designers for Norwegian Caribbean (later Cruise) Lines. This nostalgic video captures the affectionately nicknamed "Blue Lady" departing Miami on a fine but sweltering afternoon and at anchor in St. Maarten, St. Thomas and NCL's Bahamian Out Island. It also ventures from the top of her forward funnel all the way down to her engine room and covers most of her deck areas and interior spaces, although is not a full-on Decked! video. Perhaps if there is enough interest in this one, a Decked! can be done at a future date. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the grand lady of the seas and a few of her passing "friends" like RCCL's SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, Carnival's IMAGINATION and even Windjammer Barefoot's POLYNESIA. Some said it was a pitty the France was changed to Norway, first mainly the aft deck, later on the superstructure. They said it lost elegance... They had no clue what the future looked like. The Norway, even fase 3, was way more elegant than today´s floating appartment buildings..

Love your videos Peter. Norway will always be special to me. Cruised on her several times and was married on Norway in 2000 in Club Int. Sadly I was working at POM that day of her boiler explosion that would ultimately lead to her demise. 😢 Looking forward to your new video on SS Norway . I will admit iam now a huge fan of the big Oasis class ships now but these old classic ships will always hold a special place on my heart

What a great trip down memory lane Peter! I was fortunate enough to be invited to lunch onboard when she was on anchor in St.Thomas by the lovely Maggie Sitou who was Hotel Manager and a close family friend. I was in my early teens at the time. She was huge is my overall memory compared to the other ships of her day. I later worked on St.Maarten as crew on The Explorer party boat taking out cruise ship passengers circa 1988. Subsequent to that I was Assistant Purser and Crew Purser on Cunard Princess, now sadly in the breakers yard. Thanks so much for sharing!

Her final cruise of '03 was mainly lovely. First martini for a 19 year old me, also first hangover, and first (and hopefully last) boiler explosion.

It was on SS France during an early summer ‘73 eastbound transatlantic that I became obsessed with liners and cruise ships. I sailed in Norway three times including once within a year of this voyage; she’s exactly as I recall. You are a hero to so many for having had the foresight to document these seagoing cities in great detail. Thank you Peter.

I have two fantastic memories of this beautiful ship. First in 1967 when I was flying a light aircraft to the Isle of Wight , the SS France steamed below heading out of Southampton. The second being when my late Wife and I spent two weeks on her again out of Southampton in 1998....... Such stuff as dreams are made on.

Peter, Your Norway video which is awesome brings back so many great memories for me . Of course getting married on the ship my best . ( Sadly my husband passed 3 yrs ago he would have enjoyed seeing this video too) Had my first Martini on the Norway in my favorite space Club I , Loved those elegant teas times in Club I too. We were also on the 16 day transatlantic on Norway too the one when 911 happened 😢 We were a day out of Scotland. The Norways boiler explosion will never forget 😢I was working at POM . Sorry for rambling on . Remember doing a bridge tour and galley tours on the Norway too so amazing to see. Memories keep flooding back as I write this comment. OH, Veronica, you are so kind! I love this post and your connection with the NORWAY. She was one of the most loved ships ever, for many reasons but yours tops them all. So many memories! Peter, If you haven't been, you should have traveled aboard her as the SS France. I had one of the half dozen first class suites on the top deck. The NY Times voted the SS France dining room as the best in the world, a bottle of Bordeaux wine, red or wine and as much as you could drink, was included free with every meal, lunch and dinner. Nice to see the Chamborde dining room remained the same, however, tables and seating changed as the Norway, the France had most tables private seating two, four and some six rather than mostly tables of eight. What a phenomenal ship, "ocean liners" of that era are no match in style, service and amenities to today's "cruise ships", so sad. Thanks for the peak inside.
Fantastic post! Yes, I mentioned the dining room ratings in the video and would have LOVED to have sailed in her but I was just 14 when she was shut down and my junior high school allowance couldn't swing the airfare to NYC let alone a crossing in her. Divine ship as built. Thank you. :)

EXCELLENT video, we were on her two years before you. It was a travel agents fam trip on her and Hurricane Andrew. The incredible glass fixture on the forward deck for the entrance, I think you said was for First Class passengers, it was in May 1994 that I had seen it last. I asked an officer if he knew what happened to it and he didn't know. It was a beautiful huge piece of sculpture. We ate in both dining rooms. We had rooms O63, O53 & A121. I got a lot of photos of her and we enjoyed riding Little Norway I & II. A lot of wonderful memories. Thank you for this great video. 🌴🏖️🚢🚢

My first and only cruise was on the Norway back in 1986. I remember one morning out at sea we came to a complete stop. A short time later an F16 fighter came in and circled the ship and then disappeared. I walked up to the rear deck for some breakfast and the crew was telling everyone that breakfast would be delayed and they put barriers up to keep everyone off the deck. Just then I hear a deep thumping sound and looked up to see a Coast Guard Helicopter overhead. He hovered over the back deck and lowered a basket. Ship medical staff pushed a man on a stretcher and loaded him in the basket and up he went. They secured him inside and then dipped their nose and headed for shore. A short time later the Captain came on the PA and announced that the man had brought his entire family on this cruise as his life long dream and sadly suffered a heart attack. The Captain asked everyone to say prayers for the man. Things got back to normal and the activities started to rev up. Later the ship all call tone came on and the Captain addressed the entire ship. He informed us that the man had passed away. While he was still alive on the ship he had begged his family to stay and enjoy themselves. The Captain said they had all decided to continue the cruise. Then he made an appeal to everyone on board to stop by the Captain's table in the main dining area that night and greet the family members who would be his personal guests for dinner. That evening the family shook hands with and hugged every person on that ship. It was emotional, powerful and such a high class thing for the Captain to do. I'll never forget it.
Wow, what a powerful memory! How sad for his family -- I can't imagine how they must have felt. Thank you so much for bringing this bit of NORWAY's history to life here.
Your videos are like time travel Peter - you bring these wonderful ships back to life - your narration is the best - if I’m feeling down then just put on one of your videos- they are like a ‘drug’ to ocean liner enthusiasts 😊😊

‘Had a chance to sit, watch and take in the views of this lovely ship. The shots of the inner deck spaces conjured up a “fragrance” I remembered from past trips. We were onboard in the Caribbean about a month before your video, Peter. On our last trip, a special crossing in September, 2001, we were actually in Cabin N110, yours for this trip, too. It was the old SSFRANCE’s M-72. Once again, great stuff! Thank you, Peter.

As a young travel agent in the 80's and 90's I got aboard Norway many weekends for the tour and lunch. I later sailed aboard her two weeks prior to her blowing her stack. ( I was on Miami Beach the morning she sailed in and blew her stack at Port Miami) The best time to be aboard Norway was during Christmas. She was a beautiful old girl. But in the end became very Top Heavy !! Her new cabins were beautiful, I was in a Viking Deck O/S Cabin for my week aboard. When we used to sail on the Dolphin IV to Nassau on weekend hops, we used to sit in the show lounge and during the show the captain would always interrupt the festivities to tell us that the Norway was sailing by, on her way back to Miami. She was always beautiful lit up at night.
Love this! How magnificent the NORWAY must have looked sailing past the diminutive DOLPHIN. When ships were ships....
I sailed on the SS Norway back in '84. She was the largest cruise ship in the world back then. Fond memories of that Carribean cruise. She was the epitome of luxury at the time. She was too big to enter most ports in the Carribean. She carried 2 large tender boats on her bow that they lowered overboard and passengers boarded the tenders thru a door on the side of the hull to be ferried to shore. Cruising back then was completely different than today's sardine cans. I still have a glass ashtray with SS Norway etched on the bottom as well as blank letterhead stationary and the complete itinerary. They don't make them like that anymore.

Norway was my first cruise in 1991, a '50s and '60s theme cruise. Performers included Dion and Martha Reeves. The big production how was Meet Me in St. Louis. Great memories of a beautiful ship. Thanks for sharing your video!
How fun to have seen those performers. Our cruise didn't have any celebrities but there were some big shows that I have since forgotten. Thank so much for posting.
Peter- awesome video, as usual. How amazing that you got to up up top of the forward funnel. She was a regular and welcome visitor in St. Thomas. I remember the thrill in the 80's around Christmas when Norway and QEII would port on the same day. Each swinging on their anchorage and looking marvelous.
Thank you, Scott. The funny thing was that we asked to go up in the mast but he misunderstood and took us to the funnel. I was terrified as we had to climb up via a shaft over the engine room and I'm scared of heights. I almost backed out but knew I'd never live with myself if I did. It would have been so great to see both of those ladies together in the St. Thomas anchorage.

Loved this video! Started cruising in 2002 and saw the SS Norway and she was indeed beautiful. One ship I would have loved to have sailed but sadly it was not to be. I wish NCL would have saved those wonderful wall panels for future ship art. Thank you so much for documenting.
Thanks so much for watching. The mystery remains as to who removed those panels and their current whereabouts. Hopefully, they are safe and will re-emerge from obscurity to be enjoyed once again. They were my favorite part of the ship.
Superb video, I was on a cruise with her, and if my memory serves me well this cruise started on Saturday January 11th or 18th 1992, route was: Miami, St John, St Thomas, same day, passengers where dropped of in St John, SS Norway went to St Thomas an a small boat brought us to St Thomas in the afternoon) then to Puerto Rico followed by the private island and then back to Miami.
Though a bit hampered by th addional decks, she was still lookig beautiful, and I go as far that after the addional decks I found the proportion of her funnels even better, I mean they where less towering on top of the ship, I think that the mistake made with these decks where the large out of proportion windows (which I understand bussines wise) which her look top heavy and a bit clumpsy, special seen upfront.
All this said and done, striking beauty, I was lucky to have seen her in 1974 too, laid up in France with my father, who specially took a taxi to her birth at quai de l'oubli ion Le Havre, I was 9 years old and already in love with passenger ships.
We were assigned to the former second class dining room, the square one, spanning 2 decks.

Thank you for such exceptional documentation of the Norway. I feel so utterly happy and relieved that i never sailed aboard this decor disaster. Maybe i'm getting fussy in old age but the only room decor i could imagine being in was the former Children's Lounge, now the Consierge Playroom.
Thank you, Grant. Well, I agree and disagree. I loved her Windward Dining Room, Theater and the playrooms, a few stairtowers, the suites, etc. but never got why people liked her better than, say, the ROTTERDAM, which was perfect. But I am glad to have sailed in her and do miss knowing she is out there.
This ship was a big part of my childhood. My dad worked as a bar manager for NCL, and we would usually visit him on a cruise once or twice a year. Norway was by far my favorite NCL ship.

Wonderful video Peter. I sailed on Norway 4 times including the 16 day transatlantic to Europe 2001. Brought back so many memories of this wonderful ship. My husband and I were also married on Norway. Sadly I was working at Port of Miami the day the ships boiler explosion. A month later I watched her being towed from POM on her way to Germany .. Your video brought back many wonderful memories of our time on the Norway. By the way had my first martini in Club International my favorite public space on Noway. Spent every evening in there and enjoyed during the day those elegant teas

What a great diversion for me. I’m sitting in West Palm Beach waiting on hurricane Ian to make its way up the Florida west coast. That is the price you pay for living in paradise, I guess. Watching all those ships in Miami broke my heart. I had the privilege of sailing on both the Carnival Imagination and the Carnival Celebration. I knew the Celebration was gone but I had no idea that the Imagination is still awaiting her fate in Alang. Always a wonderful treat for me to see your videos. That you Peter. 🥰

Thanks Peter for uploading this beautiful SS Norway video. I sailed on her a couple of months after your cruise. She is my favorite despite the additional Sun and Sky decks that somehow ruined the ship's elegant lines. I didn't know how nice the former First Class staterooms were. I occupied cabin A77 with my parents (I was 13!) and I remember the cabin was generous in size although it was a former Tourist Class cabin. Vive le France!!

I'm glad I cajoled my parents into taking me on 'Norway' in 1990. I then went on her again the following year. So, I got the pre-addition and post-addition experience.

Thank you Peter So Much, The "Norway" was my First Cruise in October 1984, and Mom and I sailed on her again in 1985 we booked one of those First Class Cabins Surrounding the Pool and spent many wonderful evenings hanging out with Phyllis Diller in the Lounge Fast Forward now to This Saturday where I will Celebrate 30 Years with Princess On the New Discovery Princess ( add a few more years with Sitmar) But That First "Princess" Cruise on the Original Pacific Princess will always be my Favorite Cruise Thanks again for Making me Smile my Friend

Some wonderful memories for me here Peter, thankyou! I sailed aboard Norway in September 1988 before she was refitted/modified. I was the only Australian on-board with exception of the cruise director, whom arranged to meet me fairly early on. Our itinerary was St. Maarten, St. Thomas, St. Johns and NCLs private island. I was blessed to be seated in the first class dining room directly under the dome - I remember the twinkling lights like stars in the sky, like it was yesterday. Although in my early 20s at the time, I had always wanted to sail on SS France (she was always France to me...), being one of my favourite ships of state. I had visited Queen Mary in Long Beach the year before in 1987. I still fly to LA just to stay aboard Queen Mary every few years to this day. I wish I could still visit Norway/France, but I have my cherished memories :)

Very sad that these ships have gone to the scrap. My wife and I traveled on the Sovereign in April of 1996 and was able to take some great video of the Norway as we left Miami. We traveled on the Imagination back in 2005 and enjoyed her whimsical interiors. The 1990s truly was the golden age of cruising.

OMG. such memories. Thank you Peter. I need to revisit my photos from my cruises and visits. She was a gem. It all looks so dated now. But some of the better rooms were timeless. Update... I just rewatched this, with all the Norway stuff popping up on FB, I even have my France Deck plans out to look at things. Such a great video.. My last trip on her was in Dec 2002. she was experiencing engine issues even then.. So the May explosion wasnt a big shock...;-( Thanks for putting this together. I did a photo tour of her as we disembarked and to into one of the suites. I called it my "Tour de France"...

I was on the last undisturbed* voyage from NYC to Le Harve in 1974. I have some great 35mm slides I should share or give to someone who'd understand them.

Beautiful to see the Imagination too. I’m imagining Kathie Lee swanning around singing, dancing, do whatever she likes on her Fun Ship! And it’s all no-charge too, with her handy Sign n’ Sail card!
I remember it like it was yesterday, being 9, 10, and 11 years old while Norway was being scrapped. Sad. Of all the (within the last 30 years) scrapped ships, Norway was the one I really wish I could have cruised on as a kid.

We took our honeymoon on the Norway in May, 1994, just over a year before you shot this. This was so nice to see as we did not take as many pictures as we should have and had no video camera, so this was very nice to see her again. Sad what became of her, but the memories will last for us.

Sept. 1995. My wife and I were at the 60's themed cruise with the likes of Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Bobby Vee, Paul Revere and the Raiders and many more. Our first cruise experience and one we will never forget. What an elegant ship and we felt so bad when it was sunk as it's final destiny and journey. We have been cruising since but never will experience the grandeur of a cruise ship like the Norway.

It must have been a bittersweet cruise for all involved, having sailed many Carnival ships of the Farcus era except Ecstatic, this video brought a tear to my eye.

Wonderful! I only sailed on S/S Norway once, in 1988, but it was an experience I'll never forget. I especially loved the Champs Elysees inside promenade deck. It was awesome! At that time, Norway was the second largest passenger vessel, after the newly launched Sovereign of the Seas, who I later sailed in 1991. Shown briefly in this video, adjacent to the dining room, was a wall full of "keys to the city" and various plaques and commemorative items from different governments throughout the Caribbean acknowledging Norway's first visits there. So cool!
Appreciate your watching and sharing here. How nice it would have been to sail in NORWAY before the addition of the top decks like you experienced but either way, she was a very special lady.
I cruised on the Norway 4 times in the 90's. Magnificent ship, after the first time I never wanted to sail on any other. Tragic ending, it made me cry. No ship now can compare - they all look like floating theme parks. The Norway was majestic and classy being a former ocean liner.

What a wonderful glimpse into
one of the most iconic cruise ships ever to sail !! Your "unfettered access" ( your very accurate description) to the ship's incredible mechanical areas and all of her many dining rooms, bars, and public spaces was quite the tour !! As amazing as today's cruise ships are....... they can't hold a candle to the "glory days" of this fantastic ship !! This was at the time a "must do" for cruising enthusiasts! Another great history lesson for the rest of us who weren't able to experience her !

I embarked on Norway September 16, 2000 my first time on a cruise ship and my most favorite!
She was definitely a favorite of many. :)
Wonderful, as usual. We sailed on her at the very tail-end of her career. By that time NCL was selling her at bargain basement pricing, which brought out the dregs of humanity. Out of all my sailings I've never witnessed such obnoxious behavior. One guy went so far as to try to push my son out of the buffet line. I put my hand on his chest and said, "You really don't want to do that." Still, we had a great time, and am glad we were able make a trip on her.
Thanks so much for posting, Russ. That's a shame you were stuck with such horrible fellow passengers but at least you got to sail in her. I visited her dozens of times but only sailed in her that once.
They don't make 'em like that anymore, a pity she wasn't preserved.

This viewer actually actually felt a bit sad, as this is the Norway after the rebuild in the 90s, when they added the heinous extra upper deck to increase capacity. It ruined the ship esthetically.. There is a documentary here on YT called Lady in three weeks, where one can see what she looked like when NCL bought her in 1979. They refurbished her then, and repainted the hull, but did not change the exterior.
Actually, they did change the exterior quite a bit by adding the lido on the stern and the two tenders on her bow. Many thanks for watching.
I sailed on the Norway twice both in the “hump” in Europe in 1999.. she was still in better shape then her last new year’s cruise that I sailed on.. Star destroyed her!

Anyone with any information (I have been searching) on a charter cruise in the early 80's for the SS Norway out of South Florida in which the Norway was renamed the SS France for a cruise that had 30 Michelin Chefs aboard that did the food, with the staff help, for the fantastic cruise? The cruise was named "France: The Cruise" at the time.
I recall something like that, as well, either a cruise in Europe or a crossing or both. I hope someone here can shed more light on the specifics.
Sad that she had to go at the time she did, I was only a new born when she was cut up in Alang. But hey, at least I can say I existed in a time where she did, as well as my other favorite modern liner, Regal Empress.
Thanks for posting, Jonah. She had a great run but her end was very sad and unfortunately, she was well past her prime. Without a massive investment in her boilers and machinery, she probably should have been retired sooner.

So the casino is a cancer on the ship? Funny, but in my years working onboard Captains, Officers and department heads would always frequent the bar and make it the hangout for the evening. I guess there’s a difference in what the insiders know and what coneheads (yes, that’s the term we all used for passengers) think they know.
Nice, affectionate term for your passengers. As a fan of the SS FRANCE and her original stately decor, I was not keen on the faux Deco and black look of the Casino. As it "grew", it displaced more of the original FRANCE, so yes, I stand by what I stated in the video. But the good thing is that Coneheads like me, who have been studying the history of ocean liners for almost five decades and have sailed in over 300 ships, are entitled to our opinions just like you "insiders" are.
It's sad the Norway was scrapped. The additional decks really ruined the profile of the ship. Your boyfriends were really cute in the day.

It’s to bad this was a great Ocean Liner to sail on but what I couldn’t get over her boiler blew and you decide to scrap the poor lady she was the safest ship I the North Atlantic.
So if they could on the QE2 replace her engines from steam which worked good, then why couldn’t they replace the Norway’s😢 boiler this has been done on steamers in the past!

i wonder what the deal is with the imagination? other fantasy class ships have come and been scrapped in the time she has been there. not to mention she just had a drydocking before they sold her off. very weird.
Not sure but some think she may be housing workers, which would be a first for Aliaga. Agreed, either way, it is strange and especially sad to not put her out of her misery.
