    Just was reading about it and saw youtube video. This ship had bad boiler cracking before NCL even bought it. Don't forget the ship was already around 20 years old when NCL got it. These boilers are no joke, they run superheated steam close to 1000 degrees F. at pressures of 900 PSI. (An old time river steamer would run at about 60-100 PSI/300 degrees.) This was for efficiency and power, the last of the steam powered cruise ships. If the boilers are heated up too fast or cooled down too fast, the metal will get stress cracks, not to mention corrosion over years of operation. It's a real shame that people died when this boiler exploded.

    • @TPEsprit
      @TPEsprit 3 месяца назад +1

      Agreed. It is a high pressure boiler, as someone who loves steam locomotives and these old steam ships I know what you say is correct, this is why it's better for a preserved locomotive to warm up steadily for a good eight hours and the same for cooling down. It's a terrible shame there was loss of life... and very sad. I also feel the loss of the ship badly, she was so beautiful. If only she could have been saved. 🕊️🔹💙🔹🩵🔹💙🔹🕊️

      @@benzproducts In the nicest possible way I feel otherwise. Yes, one can see the sheer beauty of the original S.S. France, that will never be in question and yet in my own eyes she meant the world to me as the S.S Norway, reaching a pinnacle of her career with those marvellous extra decks and her gorgeous blue paint. The memories of seeing her so are sacred to me. I will forever remain grateful for seeing and hearing her; I feel very sorry for the children now as they will never see a ship of such beauty. 🕊️🌞🔹💙🔹🩵🔹💙🔹🌝🕊️

    Just like the Normandie, the Norway("France") is a classic example of French maritime excellence meeting an unnecessary tragic end. This ship was a masterpiece of art and engineering. I hope the SS United States doesn't meet her end like this. I'd rather see Big U break it's chains and go straight to the bottom like the SS Constitution than go to Alang. If they are going to break up the SSUS, I hope they take her to Newport News where her builders can dispose of her with dignity.

    The addition of extra upper decks completely spoiled the classic lines of the ship, but that's the need for money talking. More decks equal more revenue; making them necessary to extend the life of the ship at that time. Nevertheless, even with those additional decks, she maintained that classic ocean liner look. It's too bad she couldn't have been saved from the scrapyard, but again, that's economics talking rather than a desire to save a piece of our history.

    As far as Google Earth, The pix of that area are several years old, you can see the dates with "all layers" selected. The carrier, I believe, was the former HMS Vengeance, later a Brazilian naval vessel, retired and scrapped several years ago. According to the ruler, nothing anywhere near the length of Norway/France was at Alang at the time. You would know if the images were recent and included Norway, as it would easily be the longest ship at the site.

      In 2020 this would not be the case. (The beaches of Alang would be stuffed with old (some not so old) cruise ships that had become floating money boxes. The newest was from 2005.

    I believe this was the ship that I took for a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise in late May or early June 2000. I recall it was the ship’s final Caribbean voyage before it was going to do a transatlantic voyage to eventually be retired. I remember walking on one of the top decks, right up to the name that was on display in big block letters. People talked about how the voyage was extra special. I will have to search my journal to see if it was indeed the SS Norway.
