I have the Gibson Les Paul Special with P-90s and I couldn’t agree more. Plugged into a Plexi is just magic.
if you are a big Lollar fan, try the Eastman guitars😉
I don't need one... but I want one.
Exactly.
It’s my favorite guitar
❤😊
I don't need one but i have one 😂
I bought one. A 1957 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop 2020-2021
P-90s into an overdriven amp is pure rock-n-roll. Just ask Mike Ness of Social Distortion. Just picked up my 4th P-90 guitar. A mint 2001 PRS McCarty 10-top. Love P-90s. Listen to any of the last 3 Social D albums. So good.
I absolutely love my P90 Double Cut Jr! It has become a go to guitar for me. The great thing is, you learn so much about tone when you have just one pickup! I can play rock, punk, funk and jazz... It takes time to find all the tones but its FUN to do!
Johnny Thunders famously played the double cut junior. King of rock n roll as far as I'm concerned. Born to lose!
They are amazing!
The sad part is when you get used to the responsiveness of the Jr. with a good P-90, and no other guitars fill that void!
The nail on your second finger looks very familiar. I closed a sliding door on my hand years ago and my finger looked like that for months!
Totally agree. I've been in love with the Jr ever since Lesly West played it on Mississippi Q. Had a vintage JR in my hands at Norm's. Still regret not getting it.
Yeah they are amazing! New ones are great too though!
That guitar sounds like Vintage Heaven!
Sounds fantastic! Thanks for sharing your passion.
Sure thing!
That was the first guitar I bought (myself) when I was 15 (1976 ) $200 used.
Went thru several makeup changes over the yrs ( cherry red to woodgrain to GM truck blue)
Still have it !!- stripped of hardware from last paint job- 2004. 😂
Love the full disclosure regarding pickup swaps.
Truth is they all sounded great. Was a tough call!
Thank you brett
What a killer opening lock! 🤘
Great video! Great choice in pick up too!
Thanks!
Bought myself this exact guitar for Christmas. Can’t put it down.
I like the Les Paul Specials, because I love that round singing tone of the neck P90 driven hard. Plus the extra nice touches like the binding feel a bit nicer. And the double P90 pickup against a TV Yellow body is a great aesthetic.
The JUNIOR has become my desert island guitar. I love the simplicity, the clean tone, the daaaaaarty tone, the look, the feel... just everything. I installed the Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90 in mine and am absolutely happy with the results. Everything's subjective of course, but all in all, you can't go wrong with a Junior.
It is a must have guitar for sure!
@@BrettPapa I'm not selling my other guitars just yet but I must admit, the single pickup vibe is highly underrated. I've decided to pick up a used Epi Junior double cut as a hot rod project I can mess around with and try my hand at repainting/relic'ing... and me thinks a Lollar P-90 dog ear will do the trick. That was quite the growl you got out of that Jr. Thx for the inspiration, Brett.
Obviously, in the right hands, a lot of sounds can come form almost any guitar. The thing I really like about the Jr is that it can just naturally sounds like a fat Telecaster or a regular LP so fluidly.
Have a custom shop 57 junior reissue and it's officially awesome! I regularly do gigs with it plugged straight into a Marshall Studio Vintage with a 2x12 cab. No overdrive pedals, boosts or any such stuff, just use the volume and tone controls on the guitar and it can cover pretty much anything.
100% agree!
@@BrettPapaBet that's fun, I use a 40watt Fender Pro,reverb and it sings with a Jr or Special.
Great video, Brett. Been thinking about getting a junior for awhile now.
They are amazing Paul!!
Picked up a 1957 Junior before the prices went way up. Absolutely love it
Jelly!! I've been wanting one, but $10k is sooo steep
Those are amazing!
Yeah I have a hard time dropping that kind of money on them too.
@@BrettPapa luckily when I got it the prices were much cheaper than today.
That is the last guitar I bought and I am lovingggggg it!!
Brett, that is a great sounding guitar. I have just one Les Paul Jr., and I love mine.
A Les Paul Standard with low out-put, scatter-wound, PAF type AC2 pickups will be sort of categorically the same and will have that airy, bell-like tone as well with a little more sustain and considerably quieter. It is for this reason I personally prefer them.
But I would never get rid of the LP Junior...
Thanks for your videos and all of your content really. Some of the most inspiring on the net !
Sure thing! Thanks for checking out the videos!
These guitars rip. I bought a $550 new from Gibson and completely refinished it and upgraded the components, went with the Seymour Duncan Antiquities in it and it will go from chimey strat tones to rip your face off by rolling the volume.
Topped it off with a custom decal on the back of the exterminator guy in the top hat VH used but added the JR logo onto the hammer.
Seriously epic axe, will never be for sale.
I have had a LOT of guitars over my 50 years of playing and my '59 DC Junior still remains as my all time favorite. Sadly I sold it years ago and have regretted it ever since. Like you, I ran it straight into my amps, no need for anything else.
Yeah I regret even selling my cheaper ones. They were so good.
Got the '18 SG junior and it's my favorite axe. Completely agree on jr. sentiments. They are outstanding rock machines. Great video!
Thanks so much!
“That’s what that sound was that I loved as a child!”
Holy shit, did you nail that. Skid Row’s I remember You, Scotti Hill’s solo in particular, is what first made me want to play. Lo and behold, look what Dave Sabo switches to when he ditches the flowery 12 string. Looks like a Junior. And some Marshalls.
Yep tough to go wrong there!
Sweet tones!
Thanks Oliver!
You need Uncle Larry’s compensated saddle on that thing.
Yep...MCB Savvy is where it's at Brett. Don't send it back🤘
You’re not wrong. I’ve got it on my goldtop.
I wanted Jr. for a long time, after you saw Charlie Starr & Blackberry Smoke when you were in CA., I saw Lukas Nelson for the 3rd time and I finally bought a 1957 Junior. One thing in common with a Strat, the Junior loves Eb tuning. The P90 has an iconic sound & you can get a lot of tone out of it working the volume. P 90”s were featured on several different guitars popular in the 1950’s & they all sound great. Phil X has got to be right on the one pickup theory . 👍
Yep they keep it simple and its all about how you play them.
My first “real” gtr was a junior that my Ma bought me for Xmas in ‘74. It withstood a million gigs and moved to LA with me in the 80s. It went to tape like mfer. I still have it😊
I've ALWAYS wanted one, I did own a 67 Gibson SG Jr and OH hell yes.....she was a KILLER! Love that single plastic P - 90 drilled into a plank of mahogany, surely a ROCK MONSTER.....❤
For sure! Both of those guitars are amazing!
Been rocking the Lollars in my guitars for years. P90, singles and humbuckers. Best pickups out there to my ears!
Mine too!
Agreed. Loller is my hands down favorite.
You simply can't go wrong with a Les Paul Junior... It's so simple and SO effective...
It's no wonder Leslie West adopted it...
I have a few myself...
100% agree!
Truth is, most players just set and forget their tone/volume knobs and switch pickups which is why these seem so versatile. 1 pickup is enough when you learn to use the whole thing.
100% agreed!
Smile on my face the whole time during this..truly awesome...👍
Thx much!!
My only hesitation would be intonating as I've had issues with these bridges/tailpieces in the past, but obviously not a problem here.. It sounds incredible.:)
Music City Bridge can really help with that although the two Gibsons I have had have no issues with that.
@@BrettPapa great thx. I've gone the graph tech resomax route before..liked it.. Will check music city out👍.
I have a Les Paul Jr identical to it same sunburst
I've got one of these that I bought in 1957, still original. I even have the cardboard case for it.
That's awesome!!
Yup. Love my Junior.
I did a Fralin underwound noiseless in mine. Love it.
Those are great too!
I have an 07 custom shop Gibson les Paul jr ‘57 and love it
They are awesome!
My ‘88 Jr reissue is my favorite guitar. Love the P90 sound and it just plays nice
Yep they are fantastic guitars!
I've got a Special but had to put some work into it: Lindy Fralin unpotted P-90s (+5% overwound bridge), JEL 50's wiring harness with 525k pots and orange caps. I also put copper tape over the inside of the body cavities.
The best thing I did was have a PLEK job done and replaced the nut with bone. It made a marginal $800 guitar play and sound like a $3k axe.
I bet!
Is this the same Lollar P90 that's in the Eastman SB56?
Incredible demonstration - You have very fast fingers and surely know how to make a guitar talk 🎸🙂
Thanks!
100000000% YES!!!
From what I can see, the guitar has a very narrow neck. I have had a Gibson L6S Delux since 1978. It has a “broomstick” narrow neck which I love, even though I have piano fingers.
Man, I traded my Junior away recently in a trade for an SG Special. Kind of regretting this move, and this video is like rubbing salt in the wound :)
Well, we made decision with the available information and the intention at that time. So nothing was wrong. 😇
Those are great too!
Those moments in life which make us appreciate certain things that much more. Forward and onward. No time like the present to trade/sell for another Junior.
Who knows? Maybe the next Junior will be better than the last.
It sounds awesome !!😎
Thanks Mike!
Great video, great guitar. All i can hear is that Blackberry Smoke sound. Which is awesome. Thanks
Haha! Love those guys!
Got the Epi version. Sanded 1/4” off the neck depth. Love it!
Awesome!
I fitted the Bare Knuckle Nantucket p90 into my LPJ man it’s insane 👍🏻 thanks for your video 👍🏻
I bet that sounds great!
Brett, great video! The junior p90 DC ITS similar?
Thanks! What's that? Different model?
So much love for my Eastman Jr with Lollar that I'm gonna to put some hambucker sized p90 and maybe a wraparound bridge (its easy?) on my les Paul to get closer to my Jr...
Cheers Brett
Cheers!
Sweet guitar! I think Leslie West played one in the 70s. I saw Mountain again in 80 or 81 with Iron Butterfly, but I was too hammered to remember what he played then.
Haha! Yes it is what he played.
That was sick man! I have too many les Paul’s, maybe I’ll get a junior some day ……GAS!
Great playing! Those licks at the end during the pick up demonstration sound sick 🎸🔥
Got to have one. Yeah the guy who sets up my guitars is a beast of a player. I got a ton of my style off of watching him play.
@@BrettPapa cool man, I have learned a lot from you. I had a year membership to your site and I have also separately purchased the mixing major and minor pentatonic a and the British blues course.
Now I’m guessing you might not be a big slash fan but he definitely mixes major and minor pentatonics a lot. There was a guy on RUclips who passed away in 2018 who did some “slash style” instruction. Is there anyway you could do a video or some kind explanation of this style? I just really like your teaching style. I’ll attach a link to the guy below. I really want to combine major and minor pentatonic scales and flow from the boxes using legato like this. I would be more than happy to pay for some kind of course on this ! 🎸🎩
ruclips.net/video/BU8hlxaupy0/видео.html
Nice I have a 70s USA/ Japan hondo2 same set up but has a dimarzio pick up could talk thru it super hot pickup . Something about just the one pick up in the bridge position just sounds amazing . Less is more!! Gibsons are just amazing instruments . Wish I had one of real deals . I do have a les paul custom Black beauty with 57 pickups has that same kind of bite to it. Not one ever plays the same easy to fall in love with any gibsons in. Love it.
Lots of great guitars out there with this format. Doesn't have to be a Gibson.
Hard to believe that such a simple guitar is so versatile.
Very true but there are so many tones in there!
That’s a great sounding pickup. I only play juniors
Brett, I‘ve bought the regular J because of this video and it’s awesome (like you said).
Exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for the great video!
Btw, when will you upload the mentioned Video where you will show the Junior with the Marshall amps?
Can’t wait to hear it 😊
Awesome! Hopefully soon! Just finishing up some courses and then it should be ready to go.
@@BrettPapaBrett, let me ask again for the Marshall / Junior Video 🤗 when can you upload it? Please 🙌🏼
👍👍 sounds great ☺️
Thanks!
O THAT TONE!!!
It has that Sweet Tone for damn sure I may have to get me a Jr for sure now what is the name of the pickup you put in that Papa??.
lollar 50`s
May i ask if your guitar does not have a humming noise? I have a gibson les paul junior 2015 but with a loud humming noise that lessens with my hands touching the strings. .if you have, how did you resolve the issue?. .ty
It is a Lollar pickup that is a little less noisy.
I have a stock 2001 the pickup squeals with any gain, this one seems to be fine, guess I’m replacing it to a 50s lolar
Good call!
Any Gibson dot I adore! Sounds great Brett!
Thanks!
Andy McCoy used to have exactly the same guitar when he was young.. I ordered it yesterday because of the great look and sound that made me fall in love with it and especially the fact that Andy McCoy has used it.. Andy McCoy has greatly influenced my playing and what kind of sound I have nowadays, the next guitars I will buy after that will be a gibson les paul Black beauty 58 and two Zemaitis guitars.. that's all I'll tell everyone that even though it's advertised as a beginner's guitar, it has no bearing on my own playing.. for example, I've been playing for 9 years that is, at the professional level, so I am, so it doesn't matter if it's for beginners, it matters if it's good to play
Awesome you will love it!
I have your guitar's identical twin. Down to the Loller p90. I live about 5 miles from the Loller shop in Tacoma WA. If I had to choose 1 single guitar to play for the rest of my life, this would be it.
Lucky you! They are fantastic guitars and are just over the top once you add that pickup!
Killer tone!
Thanks!
Hey is the ‘Lollar Tall Bridge’ position the right one to order for the Jr.?
I can't quite remember. I remember being a little confused on which one it was. Email them or give them a call I am sure they would help you out.
Two words. Leslie West. 🔥🤟🔥
yep!
That would be an Electra guitar.
SG Junior is my next guitar...
Got one - you'll love it.
My next guitar too!
Great video! I have 2 custom shop Juniors, one Sunburst (HUGE NECK! And a TV Model, Big neck ….they both scream!!
Awesome! Yep they are pretty freakin amazing!
I have a 2011 Gibson melody maker, basically a les Paul junior with two P-90s, and it’s killer. It did need the Music City intonated bridge to get there, but that’s true of most juniors of a certain age and melody makers. Lollars may be worth trying.
Those are great! Lollar's are worth every cent!!
@BrettPapa You using the tall version of the pickup? Modern wiring? Both 500k pots?
I'm not sure. We just called them to see what they recommended. Pots are whatever came in the guitar and it was wired how it originally came.
@@BrettPapa Is there any way you can ask what they sent? Or even see what it says on the box? I don't want to buy one, and it doesn't fit lol. Tone out of your junior was killer
Brett, is this the custom shop or the regular junior?
Thanks Buddy
Custom but to be honest they are all great! I've had all of the price ranges of Juniors and they were all great!
Les Paul Jr. is just a fantastic guitar. I've just gotten my hands on the 2020 Lukas Nelson '56 signature. Incredible.
Awesome! And yes they are!
I just got an Epiphone special to try and that is my guitar, after years of fenders and trying but not liking regular LP's.
Specials are like a mix between a tele and a LP. Great guitars!
Just got mine Friday, spent all day playing it thru a Marshall DSL1CR, sounded great. Saturday I plugged it into my Swart Atomic Jr., it sounded even better. I could spend the rest of my life in my bedroom playing this guitar.
Yep they are fantastic!
Dude that opening lick is so tight I learned it - hell yes
I have a Les Paul Special with P90's and it sound SO GOOD - much like the one in the demo!
Haha awesome!
@@BrettPapa I had to come back and let you know that is my go to riff now at guitar stores. This is now the riff I play when I pick up a guitar. I added a little bit to account for some of the stuff you are doing (that I can't do great! LOL) man - i looped it and jam with it often.
I have a quick question about your membership. Does the Hendrix unleashed, come with the membership and how many hours long is it?
Yes all of my courses do and some of the guest instructor courses are as well. The Hendrix course is 9 or 10 hours I think. It should say on the site.
How do you adjust the intonation on it?
You just play 😁
Dang Brett !
Have a PRS One that sounds very similar! Love the 🎸.
Those are great too!
I have a 2012 Epiphone Jr. Which is a very solid guitar, at least my example is. I thought of wiring in a Gibson P90, should work well enough :)
Those are great guitars too!
listening Ritchie Sambora and Bon Jovi playing Always (vids from 2008) with LP Junior give me eargasm., the sound was insanely good.
I bet!
Best guitar tone ever. Exactly what is in my imagination. I will totally buy the guitar and the pickup. Is there an equivalent combo amp?
Well use the links in the description box if you want to help the channel haha! I personally use a Divided by 13 CJ11 or JRT9/15 for small gigs. Although I will definitely be using my New Marshall JTM Studio amp as well. That amp is fantastic!!
Really depends on what sound you are going for.
I really love this review demo. I like your opinions , experience and settings. Is there any way you could compare the LP Junior , SG Junior and DC Junior? The same with the spread of Specials? I just trust your sounds and your take . I feel like I am really hearing the guitar.
Would love to do that if I could get my hands on all of them.
hello, what divided by 13 amps are those? especially the smaller (top) one? Thank you
Big one is a RSA23 and the smaller one is CJ11.
@@BrettPapa Thank you
Build one. I built an SGjr kit from Precision Guitar Kits. It's just a matched neck and body, so you get to choose finish and all components to your desires. As good or better than a Gibson, if you know what you are doing. It's my favorite at the moment.
That's awesome!
I bought one, 3d printed a shim for the p90 so I could get it closer to the strings. absolutely killer guitar, sometimes I even prefer it to my Standard 50's Gold Top with p90's.
Awesome!!
I'm considering getting a non custom Jr. and upgrading it with a Music City bridge and a Bare Knuckle Nantucket 90. The 50s Goldop P90 is the other option cause it has the maple top. Loved the drop D part!
Sounds like a great plan. My first Junior was $600. Wish I still had it!
Like you I love the P-90. I’ve upgraded many to Lollars, He makes the best ones. I have an example of the much maligned Gibson 2016 LPjr that now has a Lollar P90 and his CC in in the neck. It’s now a magic guitar. My Epi Casino Coupe has a pair of low output Lollars and it’s great. I have several more, my latest is a Brian Ray SG in white Fox and it’s nice too. Out of 16 guitars I only have one Gibson with humbuckers and only one fender.
Yeah Lollar pickups are really great. That being said the one that was in the guitar was great too I just prefer a little less output.
And I just ordered one. Lol. Thanks Brett!!
Awesome!
That guitar was made for you. Sounds great!
Thanks so much! I love that thing!
I have to be satisfied with my Melody Maker. I put a pick guard on to make it look more like a LP Jr.
Those are great as well!
@@BrettPapa Bought it after I saw a video by hoodrio. All those years, never played a P-90.
Thoughts on the production model vs the custom shop $4K model?
Both are really good. I don't think you can really go wrong with either. I have had both and got great results with both of them.
Damn you. I thought I had reached the point of having too many guitars (10), but holy cats, that thing sounds amazing. Not sure how much is the amp, though, as I already have a Friedman guitar with P90s, but I do love the Gibsons. I wonder if the scale length has anything to do with it. Maybe I should just start by getting the Lollar 50s for this guitar?
Friedman stuff is great too. Love their guitars. The pickups in them sound great as well. Can't go wrong with the Lollar's though I put them in everything!
What happened to the video with the three marshals in that guitar? I’m totally interested.
Haha coming soon!
