@@thescholarsjourney661 someone recommended phoenix wright music to me and I didn't believe them. Thoroughly surprised me though, especially that one that took place in London I think? Surprisingly good
Words cannot describe the surprise I had when instead of edge of dawn playing, we get this guttural opera in a made up language that sounds like Italian gibberish
It's almost meme status how in the previous battle you get to listen to basically techno music and suddenly for the final boss an Opera tenor starts blasting from the speakers and you're like "shit got real huh"
@@KingOfFools784 I'm playing the game now because I dropped it after my 1st route (just need to do the crimson flower route), and it is unique how Azure Moon got the more traditional heroic boss theme, while it also being full of emotions because of what happens, as that route has the more "traditional" story of them all (not necessarily bad), silver snow got the emotional OST for that grand unexpected final, and Verdant wind got just the villainest villain of them all, and got something that could be part of a Disney old animation movie (And I love it, because it fits on the fact that the golden deer route is just like Bycicle support wheels for the lore the other 3 of them throw at you, completely necessary, but in case you haven't done it you probably would not feel that).
I am seriously shocked that it is your first video on RUclips. This is SO DAMN good, it’s a epic video, and I was expecting for you to have a at least 5 months long channel, but… you’re new, and that’s refreshing.
not to take away from the quality of the video, as its great but this is actually the same guy who runs a wrestle channel, so he definitely has had some experience.
This is very likely the applied strategy where you start (new, restart, etc) your channel with big quality videos to build a solid algorithmic foundation and to ensure momentum.
YES!!!! I've always considered When Mother Was There one of the, if not THE most emotionally charged music on P5's OST. When I first listened to it, I was genuinely shocked. Suddenly this cheerful but slightly unconfortable music turns around and _sobs_ to the player. It's the reason Futaba is my favourite character.
In fairness I was more partial to Rivers in the Desert because you hear it quite a couple of times but then, during the end of the story boss fight it has an evolving version where it starts VERY bare with just some light instrumentals and throughout the fight and the dialogues therein it evolves to add more instruments untill finally, at the concluding fight, it adds the vocals and it hits so fucking hard
My favourite theme in the entire game is I believe although out of the palace themes, When Mother Was There is third. (Only below Whims of Fate and Gentle Madman.)
Words cannot describe how 'memories of the city' from persona 3 makes me feel. Because of everything that built up to that last month of the game i feel in the song and i love it
P3 music is so amazing😭. From something adenaline-inducing like ‘The battle for everyone’s soul’, to something bittersweet like ‘Memories of You’ and ‘Brand New Days’
Fire Emblem has actually been doing the seamless overview/battle transition since Awakening (3DS era), actually. In Awakening, IIRC they called the battle versions "Ablaze". Prior to Awakening, however, all FE battle songs were distinct from the out of battle themes (which also usually tended to have different battle themes based on which side's turn it was, and there were at least in the GBA era an extremely wide array of progressively more dramatic and thematic boss themes as you went further into the game). Of course in general, FE's always had a vibrant soundtrack.
And they already used the dynamic ost to subvert the player's expectations in Awakening ! At a certain point of the game, the MC, blinded by rage and grief after the loss of an ally, attacks retreating enemies in a pointless battle. For this one and only map, the game uses a special track, called "Don't speak her name!" which is both haunting, sad and epic, but is NOT dynamic. No cool energetic (ablaze) tune, just a long 4 min ballad that keeps playing through player and enemy phase until you have to kill the boss, a good person who never asked for any of this. FE ost really is something else
Why do you hate Persona5 music so much. 😂😂😂😂😂 Counting conservatively, only counting absolute bangers and no alternate versions, I counted 42 between the vanilla game and Royal. But pretty much every single track is in the very good to amazing range.
Can we also talk about THree Houses absolutely SLAYING it with the use of Broken Routine??? Like when it plays for the first time and continued to play after *that* chapter, it really just enhanced the whole thing.
So true. Everybody just wants to talk about the metal action battle themes in games like Three Houses and Xenoblade, but the real greatness and magic of those soundtracks is in the more calm tracks. The emotion and the composition quality is unbelievable. Espcially in the USA, people only talks about how great the soundtracks of Persona 5, Nier Automata, Hades, Undertale, Guilty Gear, etc. are. Yey few of those tracks come close to any of XC2. Take any Zelda game. Look at Octopath Traveler, A Plague Tale or Ori. Compare the empty "epic" sounds of God of War to Three Houses or Pillars of Eternity. Take the Super Mario games and the Donkey Kong games. There's greatness in that music too.
@@r.c.c.10 The problem is three houses lacks emotion. The songs have no sad direction, no emotion. Look at The generic sad songs that plays to Dimitri and everyone else who îs sad.
sorry but how??? I always thought the music had a lot of emotion in them. recollection and regret is like the best calm track in that whole game and i really dont care how many times it plays, that piano is sooo beautiful with the synths. But to each their own ofcourse.@@mihaimercenarul7467
"So Happy World" from Persona 5 Royal hurts me deep, with that happy and crying melody. This song touched my son, and knowing the context it was used to play makes it way more deep, and that's something only videogame soundtracks can do.
As a huge Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fan I really appreciate the music being shown off here cause its honestly some of the best in the industry at making players feel a certain way depending on the situation.
The music from the entire series of Pokemon Mystery dungeon is so good, I really remember being in middle school, playing the newer installments (portals to infinity and super mystery dungeon) on my 3DS and LOVING the music. Now that I'm older and able to play the older games on emulators, I still love it just as much. It draws from such a wide variety of music references! My friend in high school did a year abroad in South America and when she sent some of the culturally significant music from I think it was Equador, I thought huh, this reminds me of some of the music from the mystery dungeon series, despite not having played any of the games in years. Just shows how memorable the music is, I can recall the exact sound of quite a few tracks right now.
@@magiciansarcana yeah even if someone doesn't like a certain PMD game they always say the music is still great. Kind of neat that some music from equador is similar to some mystery dungeon. And same I always got PMD music in the back of my brain since I'll randomly remember a certain song during the day.
If there's one thing the franchise has kept consistent in terms of quality throughout the years, it's the music. I personally think Colosseum and XD both have the best music out of the spinoffs but that's just me
Fire Emblem Three Houses really is such a triumph of a Soundtrack. I've kept listening to its music every day since I played it, and I could talk about it for hours. The attention to detail in what is such a massive soundtrack is absolutely insane. Thanks for this video.
As someone who struggles with auditory processing I deeply appreciate the subtitles you provided. Not many people will care but those that do will be beyond grateful. Absolutely loved the pacing in your video. Great work, my friend!

As a fellow video essay creator that is borderline obsessed with carrying the narrative I'm trying to tell with the music sourced from the topic at hand (long story short, the OST from the anime I'm writing on), watching this awakened something in me. You not only used extremely appropriate tracks to support your own narrative, but also used the converse option and supported the TRACK that was playing with the words you wanted to convey based on the feeling that track surrounds, something I haven't thought of until now. Not only that, but the way you structured each individual segment to compliment each other was absolutely splendid! You've earned a follower from a fellow enthusiast, and I hope your essay endeavors treat you well going forward!
Undertale, Omori, earthbound, fire emblem, xenoblade, persona, Minecraft, cuphead, MKWII, pokemon, genshin, all have great OSTs, don’t forget about instrumental anime OSTs from anime like DB, bleach, hxh, just to name a few
Listen to Rhapsody on the Theme of Holst from HxH, it’s amazing. I’m also in love with the Cuphead soundtrack and I’ve listened to the songs hundreds of times. Also Ludwigs boss fight in Bloodborne might have my favorite boss theme out of any game ever.

Persona 5’s soundtrack is incredible and it was basically all I listened to for months both during and after my playthrough of the game. The song that I’d say had the biggest impact on me is I Believe. The way that song manages to hype you up for the final fight while also have by one a bit of a somber element to it given the context of what you’re about to do when it starts playing is incredible

The composer for FF14 and FF16, Masayoshi Soken is a musical genius. So many masterpieces that he has created like: Ascension (FF16) Away (FF16) To the edge (FF14) Flow (FF14) Shadowbringers (FF14) Find the Flame (FF16) All tell a story as a forefront to the game rather than just being background noise and they’re amazing!
@@crossdaboss8914 Yes answers is amazing! Probably the most important song in the game. Composed by Nobuo Uematsu who was a co-composer and made the main themes of 14 with Soken until Shadowbringers. And then Soken took over for lead composer from there on.
Game OST in particular is really amazing in telling the mood. Even without understanding the story. English is not my first language and back then, playing Wild ARMs (My first RPG), I couldn’t understand what was happening. But at least the musics helped me to understand whether to be happy, angry, sad. It’s not until replaying the games now, years later that I can finally understand the story
The music that made me love video game music deeply is Song of Healing from Majora’s mask- just how the endless loop of the somber yet hopeful life you’ll repeat. Video game music has every single emotion you want to hear/feel. The ost of a game enhances the experience. I personally feel video game music is unappreciated in terms of the mainstream- it’s fully popular with gamers considering Japan still sells CDs (and tapes/vinyls) of popular anime/games, and majority are also in music streaming services like Apple or Spotify. Video game music is amazing
Final Hours from Majora's Mask always gets me. It's just so hopeless and makes you feel how the residents of Clock Town feel in what is indeed, their final hours.
Yeah, some of my favorite video game music is the emotion it can make you feel. Half-Life 2 is full of great music, but one of the especially hard-hitting ones for me is Particle Ghost. Spoilers: It plays after you come out of the mines (after Ravenholm) back into sunlight. You'd think it would be a relief, but you're quickly reminded that the rest of the world isn't much better. Under the Combine's rule, the world is a husk of its former self. Wherever you can escape the Combine (Ravenholm/mines) is overridden with hostile Xen creatures, often intentionally placed there by the Combine. There is no escape. This also is right before the fight where Triage At Dawn plays. Triage At Dawn is a lot more popular in the community, and it's indeed also very good music with a similar tone, but Particle Ghost just hits me harder. Makes you think what it's like living in this world daily, with the constant very real possibility of the Combine getting suspicious of you and thus killing you, your family, your friends, and anyone else that might have interacted with you.
if there's a part 2 in the works, pls let it include Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy 7, NieR, Souls/Borne games, & Monster Hunter. I know all of these aren't likely gonna be in one video alone, there is certainly too much music to explore to appreciate all of them. Like you said, the ost is both great on its own & enhances the experience & even goes as far as to tell its own stories without words or lyrics. Some nice tracks to start would be You Will Know Our Names from xenoblade, Fatalis theme or Proof of a hero from monster hunter world iceborne, & Ludwig the Accursed/the Holy Blade from Bloodborne
@@PeteRepeatYT you picked the most fun hobby to do to me. VG music hits every style of music, and fits every block and genre. Way too many for most outside of the hobby to get. XD. Also. Great video. Forgot to say. Sorry for being rude.
tbh the many vocal themes of strive with their english lyrics make you forget how epic the tracks in previous titles were without any lyrics (and how much they conveyed still). But of course I love all of it.
@alyssa_vatalth I love a lot of character themes in previous games too. My favorite theme in the series is actually in Xrd (Bedman's theme "Does the Sheep Count the Sheep?").
The Engrish vocals sound so...unprofessional. He should've just stuck to singing in japanese if its strong suit, I'm sure the vocals would've sounded better in Japanese. Sadly daisuke was trying to appeal to Americans with this game
@@uranus256 what's unprofessional about the lyrics? I don't know anything about music and they seem fine to me. I'd also say that english lyrics benefit a wider audience, not just Americans. Non japanese GG fans live all around the world.
I'm sad the OST of the Nier series isn't mentioned. In my opinion, it's THE best OST out there. It is so good that I still listen to it every now and then after all these years. It also added so much depth and immersion to the story. The composer, Keiichi Okabe, won the award for best score and music not once, but twice and he really deserved it.
Even before Neir and Keiichi Okabe, Drakengard as a whole has always been fantastic. Growing Wings being recurring between 1 and 2. Keiichi Okabe also slotting his take in Drakengard 3 was fantastic. The work he did with Nier and Automata has been consistent gold.
I was waiting for it the whole time. My first time in the amusement park is still a memory that gives me chills. I went into Nier having (obviously wrongly) told that it was a pretty shallow game about a hot anime lady and that track is what changed my mind.
Nah, so average. Two or three good tracks, sounds good as action music but the compositions are nothing special. That year you had Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild and Cuphead.
@@r.c.c.10 Three houses is also average. The Time skip has 2 songs, long road and chasing day break that plays over and over again. Unlike în fire emblem fates where conquest has dark wastes, a dark fall, and many other songs, while birthright has a light bacon, light ray and many different songs with different style. Even the preparation song îs different depending on the route. Three houses doesn't do that. It has The same generic songs în all The routes even The sad songs are just life less. It plays the same sad song when Dimitri DN edelgard are sad over and over again. If you write three houses sad song, you get that one generic song. Three houses soundtrack îs overrated
As a fellow OST enjoyer, I'm someone who not only loves videogame music, but also have been led to games I didn't know of because of their music, such as Child of Light and Eternal Sonata. The way videogame music conveys emotion, tone, makes it immensily more memorable to me. And then, I undertood something: Why is it that some people have what they call "their songs?", because it formed memories for them. And videogame music, does that for you with each track. You feel it.
The music in final fantasy 14 has so much meaning to me. It’s more than music, it’s apart of the story. The intro cutscene song takes a whole new meaning at the end of the game for example, which is crazy because they planned it in a 10 year plot. The song is called “answers” if anyone is interested in listening to it. Also in the last area of the game, the music evolves into something beautiful that I will never forget.
actualy the meaning of answers was retroactive, the devs have said that shb and ew were not the original plan for the story. and personally the overuse of answers this expansion ruined the song for me.
God, Three Houses got all the praise it deserved on release but its soundtrack has been completely shafted by time. It's absolutely one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard across any medium and I'm really happy someone else knows it too.

Legit got goosebumps when the thunder theme of fire emblem came up although I’ve never heard it before… just thinking about the situation you described and then hearing it…damn
Great video! Loved hearing all the examples you brought up and feeling all those emotions all over again. Though speaking as a gamer, pop/musical enjoyer, and general music enthusiast, your tone and delivery can come off as patronizing at times. I love video game music, I listen to video game OSTs almost daily, but saying that NO other kinds of music can do what it does is a far reach. Like, you’ve essentially invalidated the entire medium of musical theatre by saying that only video game music can tell stories. Not to mention the countless folk and indie albums whose whole identity comes from storytelling and atmosphere. Overall I was just off put by the weird superiority complex, I know the youtube algorithm prefers inflammatory statements and clickable video concepts, and I know that my singular opinion won’t actually affect anything, but I would much rather the theme be “You should like Video game music” instead of what you ended up going with. Because uplifting something will always be better than putting something down.
The fire emblem one is so much more impactful when you realize it plays the leitmotif of the game's theme. It makes you truly feel a tragic sadness for having to end things with this character the way you are, considering all you went through and all you could have done to prevent it.
Listening to your section on Hades, the first thing that comes to my mind is Outer Wilds. There is a theme in game that always plays before your run times out and you die, which you become very familiar with throughout the game(End Times). Then, when you initiate the final sequence of the game, an extended remix of the track starts playing, INSTANTLY raising the stakes by bringing up the ideas you assosciate with death and the End(Final Voyage). Listen to both, absolutley amazing.
yeah! I thought the exactly same thing. I think Outer Wilds has a wonderful and very consistent OST. Everytime you hear music in OW, you know you something is about to happen, or you found somewhere important. [Spoilers ahead?] The track "The Sun Station", to me, was perfect to set the tone of that moment.
I would have loved at least a mention of Nier: Automata and MGR: Revengeance. Both are banger soundtracks, that add a lot. Especially Nier since most of its songs have 3 versions(instrumental, vocal and an 8 bit version) to fit the situations you are in.
I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg or should I say the most talked sbout soundtracks in gaming, there's just so many other soundtracks that are as good if not better than some of the examples provided here(in my honest opinion) Persona 2, 3 Nier MGR Yakuza/Like a Dragon Deltarune Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 10, 16 (8's soundtrack is very underrated and is probably my favorite of the series because of how different it feels compared to others, and I think 7's soundtrack gets more credit than it deserves) Resident Evil 2(original) These are a few examples I could think of
Not just Automata. Replicant and Reincarnation have beautiful soundtracks. Drakengard 3 also has a lot of bangers. Keiichi Okabe is a man with musical magic
I'm baffled that he didn't mention Halo and The Binding of Isaac as those are some of the most iconic soundtracks in videogame history, but I guess it's because of his gaming taste as most featured in this video shared grentre and some ofhter similarities
Big ups to Okami's OST. The Yami theme is one of the best boss battle songs I've ever heard. Set to a waltz-like 1/3rd timing, the instrumentation of the song's forefront switches back and forth between two sets of instruments, representing the two opposing sides of the battle. Over the course of the song's loop each side gets louder, more intense, interrupting each other and at times playing simultaneously, neither side willing to give the other space. Even the notes used sound at times like they're representing the actions and feelings of each combatant, loud and boastful trumpets to menacing and overpowering organs on one side, and woodwinds on the other that run a range from low and threatening to higher pitches reminiscent of an animalistic whine of pain. LEgitimately one of the best composed game tracks I've ever encountered.
I am proud of you Pete and super glad that I have watched this. I can only imagine how much struggle you had in the creative and editing process, but you kept going and the final result is great. When it comes to videogames and music we do have tastes that differ from each other, but your knowledge and passion serve for a great great essay. Great job Pete. Well Done!

You are correct in saying this, because the frustrating thing i find with a lot of people is that they will ignore any song that DOESN'T HAVE LYRICS let alone music that isn't """""""""""""""""""""""normal"""""""""""""""""""". Music is one of the best ways to show character, add complexity to situations and it much more frequently has much more thought behind its composure as it not only has story beyond i BroKe uP wiD My bOyFRiEnd for the thousandth time and has subtlety beyond the thought of trying to be an earworm, which is often one of the only motives behind the song, which leads to EVERY SONG ON THE F^CKING RADIO SOUNDING THE SAME
I agree to a certain extent, it is definitely kind of disappointing a lot of folks won’t give certain video game tracks a chance because they’re just instrumentals. Part of why I love video game OSTs is because of how musically complex they can be, and a lot of popular songs just aren’t to the same degree. I’m a huge fan of Blazblue, have a listen to tracks like Lust Sin II, Imperial Code, and Hakaishin, and compare that difference with most songs you’d hear on the radio. Those songs don’t have lyrics in-game because the instruments can communicate the tone of the situation or the major aspects of the character. I feel like a lot of songs now rely almost too much on lyrics to say what’s happening, which is fine, but it often leaves the instrumentation kind of bare, which I’m not super into. Going from Under Heaven Destruction II or In Justice to most other music I hear just makes it feel a lot emptier in a way. That said, I do think there can be a lot to appreciate about lyrical songs, both in and out of games. Armor-clad Faith and Love the Subhuman Self from Guilty Gear Strive are some of my favorite songs of all time (by the same composer as the Blazblue tracks btw), and much of the reason for it is the lyrics and how they relate to the character they represent and how they can be relatable to others, including myself. Lots of music has lyrics that resonate with tons of people (makes sense since they’re often about situations that are very relatable to their audience), I just often find myself wishing there could be more to unpack with them, like with the instrumentation. I like dissecting the music I listen to, and when everything is laid out bare with little subtlety, yeah I can appreciate the clarity of the message, but it’s not something I can really sink my teeth into the way I can with songs like Let Me Carve Your Way or Necessary Discrepancy. That and the music behind the lyrics make me feel kind of unsatisfied with a lot of music that I’d hear on the radio. TL;DR- Daisuke Ishiwatari is the goat, play Blazblue and Guilty Gear and jam out to their songs
@@spiggityspoo756 It's because great VGOSTs are designed to tell stories, while great "normal" music is designed to appeal to the widest demographic possible. The exception is indie stuff of course, but the quality there is hit or miss and it's very hard to find.
But if you don't play video games, all of the associations that you describe will be lost, or at least not mean so much. However the elements you describe, of matching musical themes, orchestration, etc, to action and character within a narrative, are very familiar to me from the worlds of opera and (some) musical theatre. King of the leitmotif is not John Williams, but Richard Wagner, though other composers have used the technique before and since. I'm glad to know this is an area of work that is paying composers to write music that finds an audience, I just don't see how I'm going to engage with it, and nor am I persuaded that it is better than the music I already listen to, because that is a very presumptuous thing to say, and I'm not having it! 😂 Glad u r enjoying it though.
This radiates some heavy "iM nOt LiKe oThEr GiRLs UwU" energy. Yikes...... How about we appreciate any music? What a slap to the face to any musician nowadays get over yourself 🤢
I think my personal favorite game soundtracks of all time are from the Xenoblade series, 3 specifically, but all of them are incredible. They’re worth playing for the soundtrack alone, and that says a lot considering how amazing the games themselves are. The motifs and stories told in the music of the games across the whole series are incredible, and part of the reason 3 is my favorite musically is because of how songs from 1 and 2 show up in the songs of 3. Also, for another great example of songs changing with what you’re doing like how you referenced the rain and Thunder songs from FE3H, would be Metal Gear Rising. The way they have like 2-3 versions of every song that progress as the battle goes on is incredible.
@@vibaj16portal 2s music is sole of the most memorable I've heard. Not exactly music I'd listen to outside the game. But whenever I hear a second of it I immediately know what game it's from.
Oh yeah there's a lot of appreciation for our favorite JRPG titles in here (fellow xenoblade lover) but MGR really deserves appreciation as well. Pretty much every. Single. Combat track. Is playlist material. It's impressive it's hit after hit after hit with that game. Even the freaking dlc boss that no one played has an amazing track. AND most importantly with these types of tracks, THE LYRICS ARE NOT CRINGE. I'd even say great. A lot of voiced osts (specifically japanese developed ones) have really bad lyrics that just make the songs unbearable even if the music is sound. This goes for a lot of traditional music artists as well.
I never played fire emblem but when you mention the final battle theme being more emotional and somber, I immediately remembered Dark Souls 1's fight with Gwyn. Most of the boss fights before have been grandiose and epic but you enter Gwyn's theme and all you get is that single piano chime as he slowly starts walking to you. (ALSO the leitmotif in DS3 when you fight the Soul of Cinder and you get that same piano melody when he switches to his sword stance in phase 2)
@@pwsjsks aight c'mon now let's not shit on other games, there are alot of other ost's that are amazing and phenomenal, open your mind to more of those.
I’ve always been a fan of video game music, Octopath Traveler really shows me that. But what series of soundtracks that really made me realize how beautiful these medium of music can be was the Xenoblade series. Especially 3’s, in how it’s soundtrack is integrated so heavily into the plot, these soundtracks are able to evoke some strong, raw emotions out of me, giving me some truly amazing experiences I’ll never forget. Of course, I’ve since bought all three ost’s physically and listen to them pretty much daily, and the magic and genius that goes into each piece never gets boring to me.
The Xenoblade games are not perfect or as rock solid mechanically and stylistically as other titles (and I think most fans would agree with me there) they're personally my favorite games ever made (can't decide on a favorite, they all go hand in hand so I count them as one experience) and I just want everyone possible to play them. Almost every battle theme is good enough to add to a playlist, same for the environment tracks for a lowkey session. AND on top of that those same artists are able to curbstomp your heart MULTIPLE TIMES. Seriously. Why are they so good at making me cry, I don't cry over anything. God I just want to jerk these games off forever
When you were talking about the importance of music in video games and showed your graphs, my mind IMMEDIATELY jumped to Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, the first game that ever made me cry, thanks to the music. Imagine my surprise and happiness when you then talked about that exact game 🥲 Thanks for the great video, Pete from Pete Repeat
Thank you for highlighting the masterful work that was put into Three Houses’ OST! The leitmotif usage is insane in that game. And you didn’t even get into the main theme and how the lyrics and melodies show up everywhere in her dialogue (and dialogue pertaining to her) and other pieces of music throughout the game, all coming back to the one. central. character. She has such a beautiful, tragic story (so does everyone else, but it’s about her lol) and a beautiful game and OST right beside her
Yeah threebhouses has one of the weakest songs în The franchise. Fates, shadow of Valentia and por have way more emotional and well designed songs. While three hoises îs too bland, emoționless and techno.
I totally agree with you. The people who say that Three Houses' soundtrack is bad because it repeats the same leitmotif are completely missing the point of why it's repeated so often (and leitmotifs in general). Whether Edelgard haters want to acknowledge it or not, she is, without exaggeration, the MOST IMPORTANT character in the game. No matter which route you pick, Edelgard is central to all of them. People complain about Dimitri's unsatisfying deaths in SS and VW, but they're missing the point that he isn't a central character in either of those routes. Of course, I agree that it probably could've been handled better, but his death is supposed to feel unsatisfying in those routes because he's nothing more than a background character on a quest for vengeance. Edelgard on the other hand, is the catalyst for the whole game. So it makes sense for her leitmotif to be repeated so many times.
Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Nier Automata, and Kingdom Hearts have some of my favorite video game soundtracks. Indie games like Hotline Miami, Va11halla, and Transistor are also incredible. I like how they break from “conventional” video game music and mix contemporary genres within their soundtrack.
For me, the game whose OST I love the most is Celeste. Everything about the soundtrack fits so well to the context of the game and its story. The piano in the OST is used precisely in melodies/leitmotifs that represent the protagonist while she's passin through so many differents emotions, and you can feel it in the soundtrack. Lena Raine, the composer, is really a genius.
Wait this is your FIRST video? I just went to go see what else you've put out and it's only this! The editing is top notch and the way you delivered it was brilliant. You've earned yourself a sub, my friend, can't wait to see what else you put out!
I absolutely love when a video game OST drops a letimotif at important story beats (I've noticed it a lot in FFXIV), or when in Dark Souls 3, the final boss drops one heck of one during one of their attacks.
I don't know how this plays for someone new to video games, but as someone who already loves all the things you love, this was great and emotional journey through some great memories we share ❤
I once showed my mother the OST for Disco Elysium, she cried and said it was like going into a deep trip of the senses. And she listens to a SHIT ton of music, mainly classical. So absolutely video game OST's are goated af!
I have never heard anyone besides me talk about the thunder version of a funeral of flowers before. It's such an incredibly strong way to end that route of the game and it literally blew me away the first time I heard it. It subverts your expectations in the best ways and puts your actions into perspective. Especially for me, who did that route last.
I was shocked to see this was the only video on your channel!! Great job. Thanks for mentioning Funeral of Flowers, I feel like often the final boss tracks in 3H get overshadowed by God Shattering Star, which is definitely a great song, but I honestly found more of an emotional attachment to the others, especially Apex of the World in Azure Moon. Makes me feel things.
Re: God Shattering Star, it's a very interesting case. A lot of the big set piece music in 3Houses is essentially attached to or about a specific character; Edge of Dawn, Funeral of Flowers, and God Shattering Star all fall into this category. The difference with God Shattering Star is that it's really about a character that kinda comes out of nowhere, that we know and in all likelihood care very little about, which is why it goes for such a bombastic impression IMO.
@@notnath14 That’s a good point. I guess because of exactly what this video talks about with the emotional progression/relation of songs in video games, your favorite comes down to which story you were jiving most with
I think the biggest factor to why videogame music is better is because it always comes with the context. When you're listening to music outside of videogames, you never really have it's context. Imagine a music about cheating, you might hear it first and think nothing of it, but listen to the very same music after being cheated on and it has new meaning and it's suddenly so much better. The thing is, we might not have the necessary context or experiences to actually enjoy that music and we rate it lower than it's fair. With videogames, you always have the context because they come together. You hear "When Mother Was There" when you deal with Futaba's trauma which brings a lot more meaning to the song than if you were listening by youtube recommendation or something like that. Of course, the quality of the music in itself is very important, a VERY GOOD music might not need context to be enjoyable, but pick that same song and actually learn it's context and it turns into a masterpiece, that's why videogame music is often better, because you get to know and experience where it comes from.
That actually perfectly describes why I love Sabaton's music. As a huge history nerd, knowing the badasses behind the band's ballads elevates the experience so much. Like when I hear "The Last Stand", it actually makes me want to defend the Pope with my life, lol. And I'm not even religious. And "Christmas Truce" is the only piece of music not from a game that makes me cry, just because of how heartwarming the story behind it is. Also your pfp reminds me of Reisen from Touhou which makes me remember how absolutely amazing ZUN is at composing music.
Outer Wilds has my all time favorite game soundtrack. I have such a deep emotional attachment to it, *especially* with the context when the songs play in game
I’ll be honest, at the start I wasn’t all into this, but as the music played and you explained everything I did a complete 180. This video was awesome. Great job on this! Can’t wait for more content, but I do want to see Parkour Pete return. Pete, Do a flip!😂
I really love the xenoblade soundtrack, from any game, the battle themes are very sticky, the title screen never disappoints, the areas you explore have a song that reflects the feeling of being there and the emotional scenes have always me crying. Some of my favorites are Mechanical rythm (xenoblade 1) You will recall our names (xenoblade 2) The weight of life (xenoblade 3) Moebius battle theme phase 2 (xenoblade 3) Uncontrollable (xenoblade x)
Have you heard redeem the future finale? It has Zanzas theme and xenogears references in it, and then the guitar comes in and punches you in the face with the beat change. It's so fucking good
Ori and the Will of the Wisps was the game OST that got me into game OSTs in the first place. I’ve recently been listening to the Killer Instinct and Doom 2016/Eternal OSTs
i need music to function so last time i sat down and just listened to music was last night, I laid in bed focusing on the song i was listening to focusing on picking out the different instruments and how they all blend together
Ive always loved music but never knew the heights it could soar to within video games. The first OST that caught me groovin while playing was Nier Automata. It taught me that videp game music slap just as hard (sometimes harder) than any other piece of music. My go-to's afterwards quickly became Doom eternal, Risk of Rain 2, Outer wilds (obviously) Ultrakill, and too many others to list🙏🙏🙏
Video game soundtracks may still be underrated, which is a bit of a shame as a composer for games myself, but I'm happy that there are a lot of people who do appreciate the work and thought that's being put into music. Very nice first video! =D
Thank you Pete for sharing this. Congrats on 1000 subscribers! Honestly I love Persona 5 so much as well and relate to Futaba so much. I’m just a socially awkward shut-in who lost both of his parents. I know she still has Sojiro as her guardian but in my case and I won’t go into too much detail but I blame myself for my father’s death sometimes because some of my other siblings and family members did and have stopped talking to me since. That was 9 years ago. My dad heavily drank and died from it eventually because he was depressed about him and my mom being divorced after 28 years of marriage. I got blamed because I never stopped him, despite trying my best. I have since moved away from those family members and live in a different place now and am doing so much better for myself these days. So moral of the story I actually cry a little bit every time I go through Futaba’s Palace and hear When Mother Was Here. It resonates so closely to me on such a personal level.
Good video, but as a music nerd I can't help but be put off by your premise. Namely the idea that any of this is wholly unique to video game music and can't be captured just as well by standalone tracks. If you're comparing to "what you hear on the radio, or songs at the top of the charts" like you said at the start then I get it. But that's a tiny, tiny fraction of music as a medium - it's like saying that video games have better writing than movies by way of comparing the best stories in gaming to nothing but Marvel blockbusters and popular Christmas movies. The influence of top-40 music has actually diminished a lot in recent years; the bar for a #1 hit has never been lower simply because everyone's listening habits have spread out so much that even the absolute most popular stuff is only paid any attention by like 10% of the music-listening populace. Non-video game music can encompass just as many emotions as game OSTs. It can tell stories with or without lyrics. It can call back to previous songs on the album or by the same artist to build a sense of continuity through leitmotifs. And crucially, in my entirely correct opinion that everyone else must also agree with (/s), non-OST music tends to be way more actively engaging to listen to. This just makes sense - regardless of what else OSTs are accomplishing, their primary function is to sit in the *background* of the game, and so they are necessarily designed to fade into the background to some extent and loop seamlessly. Non-OST music doesn't have to take this into account, so it can be way more explosive, aggressive, and non-loop-friendly if it wants to be. IMO this tends to make non-OST music much more memorable and enjoyable to listen to when it's the main thing I'm focusing on, while OST music is great to put on in the background of doing something else. Also, even if you just value the element of "remembering when you first played the game" really highly... that's not unique to games either. Movie or show OSTs can have the exact same effect. The main difference here is that movie/show OSTs tend to be much more conservative and stick to more generic orchestral scores with barely any identifiable melodies, but that's not anything inherent about the way movie OSTs are made it's just a trend. None of this is to say game OSTs are *worse* than non-OST music, of course. I love my fair share of OSTs and I appreciate that they have gotten a lot of recognition in recent years. But "game OSTs are inherently better than non-OST music" is where I draw the line. Frankly whenever I hear someone say this I assume that they've barely listened to any non-OST music since they were a kid listening to their parents' classic rock records, and I usually turn out to be correct about that assumption when I prod these people about what music they're familiar with. If you like music that tells a story, and you like video games, I highly recommend The Protomen. They write rock operas about Megaman fanfiction and they fucking slap. Similar to a game or movie OST, even their instrumental songs add to the story because of the context of the story surrounding them. From there, if you're still looking for story in your music I would recommend... just about any prog band. They almost all love to write concept albums. You can also look to a lot of rap music, and most folk music. Lyricists in those genres love to tell stories through their songs. Or if you prefer instrumental pieces there's tons of proggy mathy instrumental acts that try to convey concepts or stories through their albums. TL;DR - music is not just the popular stuff, and in fact barely anyone actually listens to that stuff these days anyway. There's tons and tons of bands out there doing the same stuff as video game OSTs just as well. If you love OSTs that sound a particular way, do yourself a favor and seek out more music like that outside of the realm of video games!
Three Houses’s soundtrack ALONE is why I wanted to play the game, even though I had never played a Fire Emblem game in my life. I had listened to a few of its tracks on RUclips and I fell in love with it so hard that I bought the game and played it. It’s now one of my favorite games ever, if not my number 1 favorite.
@@r.c.c.10 Cap. Three houses songs lack any depth or good conpoaition. It sounds generic and weak. Fates has better songs, it has 3 routes and all three of them have different feelings în instrument. Meanwhile three houses în The 4 routes has The same songs chasing day break plays în all 4 routes. It's lazy
@@mihaimercenarul7467 Actually kinda agree, 3H OST didn't do it for me. It was serviceable, but it didn't wow me the way my favorite OSTs do. Fire Emblem OSTs in general are just kinda meh tbh. That said I hum the main theme in the shower lol, it's too catchy.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 True that. My metric for what I consider an all time great OST is if I would actually buy the OST for the game. As in, I love them so much I actually want to listen to them in higher FLAC quality with a good pair of IEMs. So far, the games I've bought the OSTs for are Personas 3-5 plus 5 Royal, Blue Archive OST Vol. 1-6 (they're released periodically since it's a gacha game and new tracks are always being released), every Trails game, Ace Combat 7, and Shin Megami Tensei IV. That said, I would also include Octopath in that list, and the only reason I didn't buy its OST is because I hated the game itself even though the OST is such a banger. With Xenoblade 3, I also think it's GOATed but at the same time I really dislike the Xenoblade series' combat system so I can't stomach a playthrough of any of them.
I thought I was the biggest anorak of video game OST but you've introduced me to so many I've either forgotten about or never experienced. Every example you used in this video is an absolute banger and you have done yourself, and the community proud.
Funny you mention Undertale being a master at leitmotifs, since that might be an influence of one of Toby Fox's game and music inspirations, ZUN and his Touhou Project series. The main menu theme of the different games all have the same leitmotif, maybe even the ending themes too, and it's so consistent that even the pause jingle is a sped up version of that theme. They're fun to listen to, and are also some of the many, many more enjoyable video game soundtracks out there.
There are so many amazing OST. Grandia 1 and 2. TWEWY and its sequal. Golden Sun. Phatasy Star 2 (retro goodness) Any sonic game. Any final fantasy game. I could go on forever.
I was looking for this comment. I have listened to I'm here Revisited for almost over 100+ times on repeat and I STILL get goosebumps and extremely hyped everytime, just like the first time I heard it, it never gets old! And that's not only because of it having one of the hardest hitting guitar solos I've ever heard, and somehow simultaneously having a beautiful and triumph melody to it. It's also because it always reminds me of the insane and badass bossfight that it played on, marking Sonic's return to making competent and memorable games like it used to.. And that's not even mentioning the whole soundtrack for the game that has over 200 tracks! Let alone the sea of great songs in a catalog of games being made ever since the early 90's, over 30 years ago in fact!
Not only did you talk about my absolute favorite track in Persona 5, you also touched on the idea that the guitar sounds like it's crying. Never knew other people heard it that way too. Couldn't have said it any better myself.
As someone who listens to game OSTs regularly, I love this video. At a time when many developers are obsessed with graphical fidelity to create immersion, music is for sure the most underrated part of video games as it sets the tone and captures you better than anything else. There are too many songs and OSTs I want to shout out, but the end game credit tracks for The Witcher 2 (Dwarven Stone Upon Dwarven Stone) and Cyberpunk 2077 (Never Fade Away cover) had me in awe, somehow perfectly matching how I felt when I beat those games. And The Only Thing They Fear Is You is the only track that made me full on dance while I was slaughtering enemies with mouse still in hand.
Persona 3 has a great example of a leitmotif throughout its final act, building up until the final battle you know is coming. All the area pieces have different parts of Kimi No Kioku. This is on top of the many other leitmotifs Persona 3 has during its runtime.
Ironically enough, I'm listening to this video while I study, but it reminds me of a quote that I heard from another youtuber, "videogame music has to try harder because it's music you can't get tired of listening to". Videogame music is the one type of music that has to be enjoyable even after listening to it for HOURS. The moment you mentioned PMD EoS as your first example, you won me over. That game is unbelievably good and the best of the Pokémon franchise story-wise with Pokémon Black/White and their sequels. And then you followed up with When mother was there! One of the (IMO) the most underappreciated P5(R) tracks, which is saying a lot because all of the game's OST is banger after banger. Cant' speak too much on Hades or Undertale, but I can say I HAVE listened to Death by glamour and its variants just because it goes impossibly hard. And then you got to my favourite game of all time, FE3H! Just listening to these is making me so nostalgic for a game that came out in 2019 and it's kinda ridiculous, the music alone is making me want to replay it right now, and how powerful is that? Videogames, by virtue of being interactive, have this power to push you into the narrative and make you part of it. Even in a 100% linear story, you're the one pushing the buttons so the characters make the choices, and inevitably it makes you part of that world. I think that is why videogame OSTs hit harder than film or tv OSTs for me and many others. This video was a delight to watch!!
I feel like a game that is so Backboned with Leitmotifs is Project Wingman The composer (Jose Pavli) made a 2 part video on his channel that explained how he made the music for the game and the song, Calamity, being what convinced the dev to hire him. It’s such a Simple straightforward 2 minute song for a mission that sets in two feelings from start to finish: Desperation to Acceptance
Another great example similar to the Three Houses one is the famoulsy known "plin plin plon" from Dark Souls. If you've ever heard a Boss Theme, they're all grandiose and menacing. The final boss, Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight whose mighty lighning bolts could slay the "impenetrable and immortal" Dragons, you've heard all of his legends thorughout the game, and how he's protecting the First Flame, what keeps the world alive, but when you enter the Kiln of the First Flame and hear it. Three piano notes are enough for realising what's going on. And then you read the Boss's name "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder". You're not fighting a mighty king, you're beating up an old man on the verge of insanity or death, whichever comes first. You realise he wasn't protecting the flame, he was feeding it with its own soul, which is almost gone, hence why the Flame is dying, and you, who was chosen to take his place, will suffer the same fate. It is just so excellent
I don't really understand why people love soundtracks like souls or GOW where are all the tracks are at least what I'd refer to as "orchestral noise". Like, do you listen to these tracks independent of the game and if so why?
@@saycap Well, not all of them are like this. I actually hate the ones you mention and always skip them in the OST playlist. But some of them go really hard because they are an actual melody telling a story and not just "oh no scary demon". See "Great Grey wolf Sif" for example. Or the one example I gave, "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder", those are definitely not orchestral noise. The elden ring soundtrack is mostly orchestral noise, but actually goes really hard too. Some "good orchestral noise" would be "Godskin apostle" or "Starscourge Radahn"
@@noelcolon4012 yeah the first two I've heard out of context before, but I guess I was mostly referring to elden ring because I have the most experience with that one. All the tracks kind of blend together to me and I have a hard time recalling any of them. Which makes me wonder why the elden ring soundtrack is regarded so highly when a lot of people I've commented on can't even remember a lot of it outside a few select tracks. Is there an appeal I'm missing? I don't get it
I haven’t watched the video yet but I always thought that video game music is the modern day symphonies of the 1600s. It’s the only music today that can give the same emotions, plus it’s modernized due to the shorter song length (4-7 min). It’s truly the pinnacle of real music now
As someone who also hasn't watched the video yet, I completely agree. Video game music is so good at telling a story and invoking an appropriate emotion, often creative but also knows how to obey the rules just enough to make it sound excellent. Personally, I only really like classical and video game music, so I cant help but think the connection between the two is how both our able to tell a story and invoke emotion, which most modern music doesn't, at least, not in a way that appeals to me.
There are two songs that have length to them, I'm sure you've heard of them, but either way they were made with different parts, and both were made by Nobuo Uematsu. Dancing mad and one winged angel rebirth. Both great songs, one more symphonic than the other, but still both amazing songs
Congratulations on the new channel! This is a great video. I love the music on the Pokémon games. I love music in general. It enhances the game play for me
Final Fantasy 14's soundtrack is incredible with a vast array music genres with emotional gripping songs such "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" and "Close in the Distance" The soundtrack as a whole has so many amazing sings that drag you in
A game series that has music that will forever live with me is Xenoblade Chronicles. Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 3 (2 as well but not as much) changed my life, and the soundtracks for all three of the games are incredible. I cannot recommend Xenoblade enough, for both the games and the music.
P5 has an S-Tier soundtrack throughout. But "When mother was there" hit different. It only dawned on me later that I have a complicated relationship with my own mother that and was perhaps the reason the song resonated with me. Still use it as my ring tone years later
I love videogame music. It doesn't have such an impactful OST, but The Evil Within's Claire the Lune changed my life. I was 13 yo and I heard that song multiple times in the past, but hearing it in the saving room at a survival horror game just... Gave it another meaning. I fell in love with instrumental and classic music and started taking piano lessons. Ten years later, I still play the piano and I still love this type of music.
I loved evil within and a huge part of that is the use of Clair the Lune. It does so much with one song, it's associated with safety because it's the saving room but there is also sadness of Castellano mourning his daughter and also just creepy in a beautiful way.
When I was younger I really didn't like orchestra or classical music. Listening to Ocarina of Time orchestral album opened my eyes, after that came Final Fantasy and after that I was more open to try to listen to other genres like pop, jazz, electronic and so on. I really liked the fact that I could appreciate music without needing to rely on lyrics to make it interesting. Currently I like to listen soundtracks in general even from media I didn't consume. That gave me the ability to enjoy music without context and recommendations from people who have different tastes than mine. :)
honestly i agree. so many times i throw music from the game of a YT short i make or w/e and i'd get comments on "oh nice music track whats this from?" and im like"its from the game youre watching wtf" lmao music in games seems to be overlooked quite a lot and it helps set the mood of the situation. OT, Undertale, FE3H all are staples of such good music, and the best part is you appreciate them 10000% more when theyre played at THAT moment in the game!
In my perception as a gamer and a music enthusiast who has played 4 out of the 5 games in this video, I used to feel this way, until i actuallly EXPLORED music and not confined to billboard or viral tiktok songs or only video games. Trust me, there are A LOT more stronger pieces out there. The futaba example you mentioned needs a context/storytelling first for it to be moving. Meanwhile there are songs that are strongly moving even without context or lyrics, or they even could convey specific intense emotions. Video games really enhance storytelling/vibe of a game which can give an impact, that is true. But rarely better or as impactful than other music experiences ive had.
Shame none of it was in here. Engage the Enemy, Mechanical Rhythm, and *spoiler* the Divine, from the first game alone already reach so far in terms of what music can offer. Then you add stuff from the other two games like Walking With You/Desolation, Uraya, and Battle!! from 2, and then Words that Never Reached You, the Moebius themes, and the Chain Attack theme from 3, and you have a collection of just 9 songs that are already all so incredible and varied. And that doesn't even include any of the songs with lyrics. Xenoblade is really a shining example of how important music can be, and how much it can add depth to an experience.
I used to listen to exclusively videogame OST’s when I was younger, and when that “phase” ended for me I found a lot of bands who still take influence from either videogame music or other orchestral pieces. I love it so much
I didn't really care much about OSTs while playing a game but after playing Octopath Traveler 2 I really noticed how important the ost is for the character, for the scene, for the fight. In OT2 the boss fight theme slide into character themes with an incredibly clean transition (music is composed by Yasunori Nishiki). I really like in the video how you show the connections between various OSTs and how you explain them. Really good stuff, looking for more videos like this one.
Congrats on the new channel Pete! The Hades soundtrack is one of my personal faves so I'm glad to see it get some love! Looking forward to more great videos like this!!
The best example of music heightening the emotions in a videogame are the last two fights with slave knight gael and the souls of cinder in Dark Souls 3. Both are incredibly grand and epic music fitting for the scale of the enemy you are fighting. The soul of cinder flips it on it's head halfway to the boss fight and turns melancholic with a piano and violin calling back to the motif of the final boss: Gwyn of the first dark souls game. It was the first game to make me cry the first time playing it.
TRIBAL PETE!!! TRIBAL PETE!! TRIBAL PETE!! Enjoyed the hell out of this, made me appreciate nuances of game music that like, you recognize but don’t really interrogate too seriously. And I don’t know if you brought this up visually as I’m listening to this podcast at work, but holy shit wrestlers entrance themes really are just their leitmotifs.
I deeply enjoyed this video, and I feel genuinely happy that each game you brought up and even the songs of those games are games i've played and songs I've had genuine attachment too. Whenever someone asks me what type of music I listen to, I always default to "songs with great instrumental, but deep vocals with profound lyrics." This is still true as I love any songs where vocals are the lead and the lyrics tell a story (ie: Toni Braxton Unbreak my Heart, Leona Lewis Bleeding Love, Cher Strong Enough, Linkin Park Numb, Icon for Hire Under the Knife), but I've also deeply love gaming music because they have exactly that as well. Depth, meaning, purpose. And whenever I show a friend songs that have had a huge impact on me from a game, they always have a positive but generic response. I came to realize that the impact is heavily due to context for people playing the actual game. That alone honestly makes me feel even better. It shows that these songs were made not just incredibly well but also within the scope of the experiences the player has had leading up to the point. Examples I have would be Xenoblade Chronicles X: Uncontrollable, Genshin Impact: La Vaguelette, League of Legends Varus: As We Fall, Metal Gear Solid Call Into the Night, Pokemon Pearl Cynthia's Theme, FF Type-0 Zero, and Dragon Age Origins Lelianna's song. I could keep going, but the point I am attempting to make is that there are so many songs in games that are absolutely perfect and after hearing even two seconds of the song, my body shivers as I remember not only the whole song but also all of my experiences and feelings while playing the game that the song is from.
While is certainly correct to say that leitmotifs are more associated with movies than video games, but since i had to sit through years of mandatory music class, my main association of them is with classical music (its even more common with opera, Wagner everyone's favorite proto nazi is nearly synonymous with them; but we didnt really cover opera) and "classical" music
The archetypical association I have is with Mozarts "Die Zauberflöte", where all of the characters are represented by their leitmotif, which ironically is an opera
Huge credit to JRPG games, who seem to have the highest concentration of absolute masterpiece OSTs.
FF series, FE Series, Tales Of Series, Persona, Xenoblade
Most of these have so many iconic songs

I was so happy to hear FE Three Houses get it's flowers. I have the final song from the golden deer route playing in my head 24/7
@@KingOfFools784 I'm playing the game now because I dropped it after my 1st route (just need to do the crimson flower route), and it is unique how Azure Moon got the more traditional heroic boss theme, while it also being full of emotions because of what happens, as that route has the more "traditional" story of them all (not necessarily bad), silver snow got the emotional OST for that grand unexpected final, and Verdant wind got just the villainest villain of them all, and got something that could be part of a Disney old animation movie (And I love it, because it fits on the fact that the golden deer route is just like Bycicle support wheels for the lore the other 3 of them throw at you, completely necessary, but in case you haven't done it you probably would not feel that).
yesss FE3H's OST is forever etched unto my soul. Except the market music. I genuinely cannot stand it. Funeral of Flowers on the other hand...

Ive always been surprised it wasnt considered the best palace theme (with honorable mentions to Whims of Fate of course)
Futaba best
My favourite theme in the entire game is I believe although out of the palace themes, When Mother Was There is third. (Only below Whims of Fate and Gentle Madman.)
Words cannot describe how 'memories of the city' from persona 3 makes me feel. Because of everything that built up to that last month of the game i feel in the song and i love it
You should check out "Role to Play" from Kuro no Kiseki. I think that song gives off a very similar vibe, and I listen to them both often
Persona 3 my beloved
hearing Memories of the School on March 5th (the last day of the game) hits really hard. one of the very few times I legit cried from a game.
P3 music is so amazing😭. From something adenaline-inducing like ‘The battle for everyone’s soul’, to something bittersweet like ‘Memories of You’ and ‘Brand New Days’
The remixed soundtrack is gonna be so fire. Cant wait to hear the new living with determination
Hoshi to bokura to is the perfect finale piece for Persona 5. Tears streaming down every time I listen to it.
I literally cannot listen to that song anymore without weeping
Our Light is better in my opinion
I dunno, i felt like persona 4 had a better final boss theme, havent finished p3 fes yet but its prob better than both
Why do you hate Persona5 music so much. 😂😂😂😂😂 Counting conservatively, only counting absolute bangers and no alternate versions, I counted 42 between the vanilla game and Royal. But pretty much every single track is in the very good to amazing range.
Similarly, I can’t not hear the first few notes of the ending theme of P3 without tearing up.

Pause no diddy.
If not for the music I don’t think the series would have left such an impact on me
If there's one thing the franchise has kept consistent in terms of quality throughout the years, it's the music. I personally think Colosseum and XD both have the best music out of the spinoffs but that's just me

As a fellow video essay creator that is borderline obsessed with carrying the narrative I'm trying to tell with the music sourced from the topic at hand (long story short, the OST from the anime I'm writing on), watching this awakened something in me.
This damn first note of Funeral of Flowers (thunder) 31:16 reminded me of Volo from Pokemon Legends Arceus. Now these are some... "fun" memories
Spoilers:
It plays after you come out of the mines (after Ravenholm) back into sunlight.
Makes you think what it's like living in this world daily, with the constant very real possibility of the Combine getting suspicious of you and thus killing you, your family, your friends, and anyone else that might have interacted with you.
majora's mask have some mesmerizing, magical music. It is hard to explain why, but I love it's melancholic and somewhat dark tone
The first 3 descending notes for the song of healing is just the first 3 notes of saria song played In reverse
if there's a part 2 in the works, pls let it include Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy 7, NieR, Souls/Borne games, & Monster Hunter. I know all of these aren't likely gonna be in one video alone, there is certainly too much music to explore to appreciate all of them. Like you said, the ost is both great on its own & enhances the experience & even goes as far as to tell its own stories without words or lyrics. Some nice tracks to start would be You Will Know Our Names from xenoblade, Fatalis theme or Proof of a hero from monster hunter world iceborne, & Ludwig the Accursed/the Holy Blade from Bloodborne
just for NieR and FF7 you get a huge like! i'd add the metal gear series.

Answers to Your Answer, Close in the Distance, and of course dont forget The Makers Ruin, when YOU are the boss.
actualy the meaning of answers was retroactive, the devs have said that shb and ew were not the original plan for the story. and personally the overuse of answers this expansion ruined the song for me.

There are so many different leitmotif packed into Funeral of Flowers too
Listening to your section on Hades, the first thing that comes to my mind is Outer Wilds.
[Spoilers ahead?]
The track "The Sun Station", to me, was perfect to set the tone of that moment.
The Outer Wilds soundtrack makes the game for me. Just hearing certain tracks can make me shed tears.
I would have loved at least a mention of Nier: Automata and MGR: Revengeance. Both are banger soundtracks, that add a lot.
Especially Nier since most of its songs have 3 versions(instrumental, vocal and an 8 bit version) to fit the situations you are in.
I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg or should I say the most talked sbout soundtracks in gaming, there's just so many other soundtracks that are as good if not better than some of the examples provided here(in my honest opinion)
Persona 2, 3
Nier
MGR
Yakuza/Like a Dragon
Deltarune
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI
Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 10, 16
(8's soundtrack is very underrated and is probably my favorite of the series because of how different it feels compared to others, and I think 7's soundtrack gets more credit than it deserves)
Resident Evil 2(original)
These are a few examples I could think of
Not just Automata.
@@DeadStawker The Halo main theme itself is a masterpiece, but it's understandable since people have different taste
This video needed to be longer where is tf and dmc music?
The song that plays when you restore one of the areas, and the entire land becomes beautiful again. That's the best in the game.

It was a good video
You are correct in saying this, because the frustrating thing i find with a lot of people is that they will ignore any song that DOESN'T HAVE LYRICS let alone music that isn't """""""""""""""""""""""normal"""""""""""""""""""". Music is one of the best ways to show character, add complexity to situations and it much more frequently has much more thought behind its composure as it not only has story beyond i BroKe uP wiD My bOyFRiEnd for the thousandth time and has subtlety beyond the thought of trying to be an earworm, which is often one of the only motives behind the song, which leads to EVERY SONG ON THE F^CKING RADIO SOUNDING THE SAME
ikr, why do people need lyrics. The point of music is to sound good, you don't need talking for that.
I completely agree! Xenoblade 3 has *such* a good soundtrack. It's sooo good to listen to! 😄
My favorites are Half-Life 2 and Portal 2. There's leitmotifs everywhere in Portal 2 music when you look for them.
@@vibaj16portal 2s music is sole of the most memorable I've heard.
Not exactly music I'd listen to outside the game. But whenever I hear a second of it I immediately know what game it's from.
Favorites in xenoblade 3 are Moebius Theme, weight of life, millick meadows, ribbi flats, ouroboros theme
Soulsborne games will always be the peak of OST's in my book, absolute masterpiece.
That and kingdom hearts that’s it, the others a$$
@@pwsjsks aight c'mon now let's not shit on other games, there are alot of other ost's that are amazing and phenomenal, open your mind to more of those.
Xenoblade 2, Drifting Soul Violin, that scene at chapter seven... I love you and all you guys... One of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen

Also edelgard îs really not that tragic, child, calm down. She was mediocre as a character. Also reach for my hand îs mid. Child
Also The songs repeats over and over again, especially all The Time when it has nothing to do with edekgard and her mediocre story. Lmao
@@mihaimercenarul7467
Cap.
Tbh, Celeste has to be one of my favorite soundtracks in gaming, alongside Sonic, Halo and Persona as some other examples.

Same. The final chapter in AM is so good. One of the best tracks in the game, hard frustrating map and an annoying boss. Couldn’t ask for more
Re: God Shattering Star, it's a very interesting case.
THIS! It also applies to movie soundtracks as well. Music is just so much more powerful when it accompanies an actual story.

I really love the xenoblade soundtrack, from any game, the battle themes are very sticky, the title screen never disappoints, the areas you explore have a song that reflects the feeling of being there and the emotional scenes have always me crying. Some of my favorites are
Mechanical rythm (xenoblade 1)
You will recall our names (xenoblade 2)
The weight of life (xenoblade 3)
Moebius battle theme phase 2 (xenoblade 3)
Uncontrollable (xenoblade x)
I listen to Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s night area themes while studying or writing papers. They are seriously the most calming songs I’ve ever heard
Have you heard redeem the future finale?
It has Zanzas theme and xenogears references in it, and then the guitar comes in and punches you in the face with the beat change. It's so fucking good
I haven't been able to play future redeemed but i've read that it's ending theme is one of the best in the saga
Just wanna say, I love and I mean LOVE video games and their soundtracks to the point where I want make my OWN video game and its soundtrack.
Nier OST is banger after banger. Memories of Dust is godly.... damn now i got to play nier again... guess i won't finish BG3 anytime soon.
Birth of the Wish, End of Unknown and Bipolar Nightmare are my favorite, from Replicant instead I love Temple of Sand and Kaine's Salvation
Damn
It's a masterpiece. The compositions, the instrumentation and how the themes develop is outstanding.
@@McCaroni_Sup i tend to agree, fire emblem fates has some great songs imo
Golden Sun.
Phatasy Star 2 (retro goodness)
Any sonic game.
Any final fantasy game.
I could go on forever.
Legend of Mana
Chrono Cross & Trigger
Megaman X4/X5 ending
Nier: Automata
I absolutely love video game music. It's one of the most emotion-evoking things for me, especially the sad pieces.
that fire emblem section was beautiful. gonna look the game up, definitely gonna be listening to the ost :) great video!
In my opinion for my taste the best gaming songs are in the Sonic The Hedgehog and Devil May Cry franchises
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance:
Same, those games ost gives you so much hype and it awesome.
For me, it's Half-Life and Portal (the best imo being HL2 and Portal 2)
You can add other Capcom games here - Megaman, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers
Reminds me, the end credits track for Half-Life Alyx gave me that same feeling
I basically exclusively listen to instrumentals, which is usually video game music (or stuff like Creo)
man nothing beats the amount of emotions and feelings you get from Sealed Vessel.
As someone who already listens and appreciates VG music, this video was amazing
I feel like a game that is so Backboned with Leitmotifs is Project Wingman
The composer (Jose Pavli) made a 2 part video on his channel that explained how he made the music for the game and the song, Calamity, being what convinced the dev to hire him.
It’s such a Simple straightforward 2 minute song for a mission that sets in two feelings from start to finish: Desperation to Acceptance
"When was the last time you sat down only to listen to music?"
Every time Savant drops an Album
That line really shows just how out of touch OP is 😂
Another great example similar to the Three Houses one is the famoulsy known "plin plin plon" from Dark Souls.
I'd say Gwyn loses a bit of oomph if you finished Demon's souls first, it's basically the same setup but even then it was very impactful.
I thought this too when I knew nothing about music or music history, lol
There are two songs that have length to them, I'm sure you've heard of them, but either way they were made with different parts, and both were made by Nobuo Uematsu. Dancing mad and one winged angel rebirth. Both great songs, one more symphonic than the other, but still both amazing songs
IM SORRY WHAT THE FUCK???? LMAOOOOOOOOO
@thiccsouls1048 Uhh... which comment are you reacting too and why, may I ask?
Congratulations on the new channel! This is a great video. I love the music on the Pokémon games. I love music in general. It enhances the game play for me
Final Fantasy 14's soundtrack is incredible with a vast array music genres with emotional gripping songs such "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" and "Close in the Distance"
The soundtrack as a whole has so many amazing sings that drag you in
Always been a big fan of music that adds layers depending on the situation. It feels so interactive.
OT, Undertale, FE3H all are staples of such good music, and the best part is you appreciate them 10000% more when theyre played at THAT moment in the game!
this was my opinion before I found out about Aphex Twin
meow
so true
You’ve got so many machines, Richard!
Another great example of videogame music is Xenoblade Chronicles 1-3, so much variety and absolute bangers in that series
The best games with the best soundtracks
@@domotron3598And these 9 musics are just the beggining
I used to listen to exclusively videogame OST’s when I was younger, and when that “phase” ended for me I found a lot of bands who still take influence from either videogame music or other orchestral pieces. I love it so much
Same. And I wish more people expanded their horizons instead of only listening to game OSTs.
They definitely do also exist in popular music in many forms. Video Games are just more suited to the technique
