I love this song. When Prince turned in the lyrics "officially" -- he changed the word to FUNK so it would be played on the radio. Prince got away with everything, it got passed the censors and didn't get banned for 20 years. Hilarious, everybody knew what he said.
I used to work a graveyard shift in the early 90s. The radio station we listened to played this every night, sometimes as the morning crew was coming on at 5am. The DJs would always mention that the lyric is officially "funk". Funk until the dawn.
I was lucky to have attended the Purple Rain and Lovesexy Tours in 85 & 88 and then 15 more shows between 98 & 2016 including Coachella. The man is my hero. Genius.
Holy Cow! I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this; at the Student Union Building , Brooklyn College, Freshman Year, thinking this man is racy as hell and amazing 🔥❤️
He went against Warner Brothers, his label, and had to change his name to the Artist formerly known as Prince. He got his songs back and said from now on I’m the only one going to make $ off my music.
I was about 15 when I flipped my single of Let's Go Crazy over to hear this song on the B side. That was probably 1984 or 1985 and I played the crap out of this song! My parents had no clue what was in my headphones. Lots of songs are "dirty" these days but back in the early 80's acts like Prince, Rick James, and Madonna were considered racy artists.
I never much liked Madonna. But doesn't she have a strange song, "Papa Don't Preach"? In which she is keeping her baby and anti-abortion? Well I am quite pro-life. Lots of songs were "dirty"? Like perhaps Stacy Q and "We Connect"? Lyrics sound very much like it is referring to the sexual union of how babies are produced. My Dad bought me that tape, not so sure that he knew what it was about. I mainly liked the sound of it.
@No Limit Twon. That moment when you figure out Prince's Bside's and club hits banged as hard as his 30 to 40 "hits". There is no going back now Sir :)
Such a great song! Love your reaction..as a 40+ year Prince fan I just love watching youngsters listening to these songs for the first time! Thanks for appreciating the man & his music 🎶
This song was out when I was a teenager lol my dad would have broke my record if he would have heard that! All women that loved Prince a man in heels and lace sing this lol
…fun fact about Erotic City: If you have great speakers/headphones and you get to the chorus,Prince has Sheila E sing in one ear and Sheena Easton in the other ear…👍👍👍
It shocked us the first time we heard it. I love your reaction!!!! It actually got radio play. They just blocked out the ****. We all knew what it was though.
Not how I heard it on the radio. F word was not blocked. Does any grown adult ever listen to the words? There seems to be another song, not by Prince, "I Want to Rock Your Body" I think is the title, yet didn't I hear the F word in there also? More people should be enjoying sex, but do it the right way, no sex until marriage, babies after, and do not use the anti-family awkward birth control. Have big families, like worked so well for our ancestors.
Imagine seeing Prince and The Revolution perform this live in an unannounced impromptu concert before the song was released, I did, the whole audience SNAPPED‼ - I have two turntables, the original 12" lives on turntable #1, it's been there since the day it came out and it will never leave, I will never forget that day, and I will always love this song❣🔥💃🏾🔥💜🕊

Great song…but this is the single edit of it, not the full length version. Still great, but if you like this song you owe it to yourself to listen to the full length version, which is about 3-1/2 minutes longer than this one. It was included as a bonus track on the deluxe version of Purple Rain that came out a couple years ago (full length version was only available as a b-side on Let’s Go Crazy for a long time).
I actually gave him the singe version to react to. I thought about the extended version but I noticed a lot of people won't listen to the longer reactions.
@@tafkap01 the original 12" is better because on the other releases the pitch is a teeny bit faster and noticeable, it's chopped up and does the song and listener a disservice
Speaking of racy lyrics, did you catch "I just want your creamy thighs" early on? This song, and so many others both Prince, was so great to dance to -- vertically AND horizontally.
When this song came out nobody knew Prince was saying fudge I kept telling my friends he's not saying Funk he's saying fudge it took the radio industry 30 years to figure out he was saying fudge😂😂😂😂
If Erotic City came over the radio while you were getting gas at a station, men from other vehicles or even just walking by in the dead of summer would dance with all of the girls while they finished filling our tanks! And sometime you’d get a lunch date!
Prince for a long time restricted his videos and music online (that's why sometimes his work is hard to find). He had a major dispute with his record label over rights to his music. There is a lot to uncover, but worth it...enjoy!
Every Prince song was a whole other journey. This one reminds me of the heavy aerobic class days - no matter how tired I was, once this one came on, I was instantly revived. I miss the 80s!

That may have been an influence as well, but the primary inspiration was actually 'White Horse' by Laid Back. Check it out, the synth line is basically identical ;) Prince was so impressed by that track that he got it airplay in the US, and then released Erotic City shortly after.

Once Prince got into his JW Faith totally he would no longer perform this song. Didn’t matter to me because he had so much music and could never perform them all anyway at his concerts. I respect his faith even though it wasn’t what I believed in. GOAT. Keep giving his music the shine he deserves.

It is interesting that you said when you search for Prince nothing comes up. Prince was ahead of his time fighting with Warner Bros music to own the masters of his music. He believed that artists should have ownership of their music and not corporations. Prince was more than a musical genius, he was a smart businessman. Plus, he believed in black ownership, and when he spoke up about black ownership in the record industry they did everything to stop him, including stopping the distribution of his music. Other black artists at that time were too scared to speak up, so he did it alone. Watch some of his old interviews, you will be amazed that he is speaking about things 30 years ago which are just happening now.
