I get that this is presented as advice, and the available actors will vary by individual filmmaker, but I still think it'd've worth mentioning the $438,000 to sign Trent Lenkarski in the role of "Kevin the tree frog biology student" for two weeks filming.

i’m genuinely shocked the rental car wasn’t a part of the original premise. the line “i don’t know this car” near the end of the film was one of my favorites, it got the biggest emotional reaction from me.
First thing I told my wife when we started watching:
Do you thing this entire movie exists because he got that rental?

Your channel has been making me want to get back into film making, used to do it about 16-17 years ago now when I was young and loved it, but everyone said there was no future in it and I went to college and got a job and ignored a fun hobby I had. Now all these years later watching this channel brings me back to how fun it was. It gives me some motivation that maybe it's not too late and I can go back to my old hobby one day.
I've been inspired by Joel and others to take up film making as a hobby and I'm almost 40. It's never too late!
hobbyists often have even more creative freedom than indie artists do! happiest hobbyists and wholesome indie artists I've met often had this thing in common: they optimised for their own fun and spending time with people they love. optimising for fame and moneyback is different.
we also meet more like-minded and supportive people when we do what we love more openly.

Are the actors in the movie all just doing it as a favor to you or do you offer them some kind of scale or reciprocal help with their projects?
I definitely make sure to always be equally available on any projects they may have! Ultimately I’m working with close friends I’ve made stuff with forever, the process is so collaborative and natural and fun for us. I made my first several features when I was absolutely broke, and friends and family and actors coming together out of love made those movies possible. For a movie like this, it was really important to me to make that way of creating out of love an option for people who don’t have money. This is something I’ll discuss in depth in future videos as the project progresses!
This is the question I was wondering myself this whole video and while I appreciate Joel's reply I'd definitely be interested in the further discussion he mentioned as I really don't think it's a feasible reality for most people.
Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable not compensating even my best friends if they participated in a project like this- regardless of how fun it was to make.
I don't know about you, but I would be more than available to show up in any movie related project on my spare time, the pleasure that a hobby brings to me is enough if I have other source of income.
Obviously, Joel isn't gonna mention the huge amounts of dirt he has on all the people working in the movies, along with a few that owed him favors for making their problems "disappear".

Been watching for quite awhile when you said full length I was thinking back to when you talked short form movies and how they've been becoming more mainstream. You out did my expectations.
I love when there’s a breakdown of the technicals for movies and similar endeavors. It’s not something people go into detail about but I think it’s great for filmmakers to understand how to utilize not only funds but also how to get the most out of the tools at their disposal 👍🏻
I just finished the film and I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this emotional over a movie. I have been all three of the main characters at different points in my life and it really hit close to home. Fantastic job I can easily say this is one of the most impactful films I’ve seen in my life.
I know a lot of your films are friends working together for fun, curious if any future films will include cast/crew payments as well. I know its a trickier subject to cover in a budget breakdown as the amounts negotiated from film to film and creator to creator and person to person will vary more than anything you went over in this budget breakdown. But I think its also something that becomes worth talking about more once you cross the 5k+ budget films.
Absolutely will discuss this! I don’t work with crew, so that won’t be a factor, but any cast members who need to take extensive time off work will be compensated, easing into the project and saving the money for expenses like that. I also won’t be paying myself a penny from the budget!

Like Kevin to Caleb. started cringe and funny... Ended up being a great lesson. The scene of you and Trent outside of the motel room was amazing. You guys must have gone somewhere only you two knew in order to hit that take.
I love the film, it's almost like an extension of my favorite sketch "Your friend from high school who's doing 'pretty good'".

I have been watching all of your films and absolutely love this channel. It’s my biggest inspiration to finally take up making my own short films, I have done photography but it’s never given me what I wanted and seeing you able to accomplish so much gives me the hope I can too! keep up the awesome work
You don't have to pay for acting when you have friends! I recently approached some friends asking if they would help me with a creative project and was totally surprised when they responded with tons of enthusiasm! :D
I absolutely adored this film! Caleb is, despite everything, a lovable character. He does some questionable things but as a viewer I'm rooting for him to find his way in life and get back on track. The film explored more of what's tragic with him and I really found that beautiful. Maybe in the future there will be a sequel where things are looking better for Caleb :)

I finally took the time to sit down last night and watch the movie, and I am really glad I did, it was a great experience.
I have been following your shorter works for a couple years now, but this is the first of your feature length films that I've seen. It is already one of my favourite things you ever uploaded.
It felt genuine and relatable, and I really enjoyed watching Caleb and Kevin grow, in their own way. The pacing, the details, the care you put into this made it really special.
I also appreciate that you're not only telling stories, but also using your movies to say something about movie making, and to encourage people to do it, and not let the technical / financial aspect of things be a hurdle to creativity. I think that is extremely valuable input for creators of any kind, and especially beginners and it's even more impactful because you're showing it by doing it.
I know the youtube algorithm isn't especially rewarding this kind of projects. I hope the process of making those films as well as the response from your viewers is making it worth all the efforts. It is, in my eyes, and I can't wait to see the other fruits of this crazy marathon year.

I like that joel is showing the numbers and how to get the numbers down to facilitate anyone shooting a feature, for me it isnt as much about saving some money on those details its more about finding the group or crew willing to act and make a feature for free

The biggest compliment I can give to you is that it sounds wrong to call your characters "characters". The portrayal of them are so grounded and realistic I subconsciously think their real.

I liked how Caleb was inspired to get back with his ex after wrecking his car and getting a new one, wanting to start over with her that was really neat and i felt for him in that moment, makes him likeable and relateable
I was sad he didn't draw the destroyed burritos under Misc Food/Props
Surely he spent thousands of dollars to get a wild animal handler and that raccoon, his performance was excellent, one of the tamest raccoons I’ve seen!

Imagine making a movie for 1.5K, being able to make it for much less than that and still having it be one of the most moving films of the year.
Joel spent most his money on a rental car, got some friends to help him, and had a budget of less then 2000$. Sounds suspiciously like john carpenter
I do think the bigger barrier to making a film nowadays is finding the time and knowing where to start. Its no longer money.
This is absolutely true! Efficiency is an independent filmmaker’s best friend, knowing how to make something good AND fast AND cheap is a superpower, and it is possible despite that often quoted “choose two” mentality.

This is a bit of ramble, but despite being a big RLM fan and finding what they've accomplished very inspiring (they're a great example of how the internet has democratized entertainment and allowed for more personal, niche creators to exist and be successful), I realize now how not-very inspiring their attitude is towards low budget film(making), in stark contrast to Joel's. Like, if you are able to incorporate stuff that adds production value into your film for free, then you're a more artful, resourceful filmmaker. There's absolutely no shame in not having a budget. Joel's attitude is very freeing for a beginner like me, far more encouraging, and overall far healthier for my mental well-being.

How did you edit the footage? Any tips for low budget options for this?
I edit in Adobe Premiere! But Davinci Resolve is a free option that many swear by!
You can't forget the cost of catering either which is important. If you're working with a small crew you can make a one pot meal (if youre doing it at home) or prep a bunch of sandwiches or wraps which would really only cost you $20-$30 at most rather than ordering food out (which is also an opttion but could cost you quite a bit if youre feeding 3-4 people)

This is probably something you've already considered for these projects but have you considered making one of these movies fully animated? Or is that outside of the scope for the time crunch of a month for each. I love the animated style you use and would love to see a full feature using that even though obviously that adds a huuuge amount of time. It would just be cool to see basically a super indie low budget scanner darkly type rotoscoped movie with your humour and style.

Hey Joel, really appreciate it when you let us under the hood so we can get an idea of how you're making your films. I have a question about audio - sometimes you get this echo through your mics, and I'm wondering where that comes from - usually one mic will be really clear and another will have a chorus effect that suggests sound is coming through two mics, but I'm confused because you'd think if it was because both mics were close enough to pick up the other person's voice, both would have the echo, but they don't. So I'm curious how that happens and is there a way to avoid it or is it part of the equipment you have to use on a budget? Also disappointed Arizona Ice Tea wasn't a sponsor. I didn't know it existed until it was Caleb's favourite drink. :p Love your work.

A List of Ideas aka My Ideas aka My Possibly Good Ideas for Joel's Film Stories (I'm Not Joel):
1. A film where every time the view changes it's done with a snap zoom
2. A film about calling businesses to ask very reasonable questions but in the background are very audible very weird sounds (be creative!) that the recipient of the call can 100% definitely hear, but you act like there is nothing weird going on and basically the goal is to just get the very reasonable and normal questions answered.
3. A film about calling the ghost of a Heath-Ledger's-Joker impersonater (at 3:00AM!) and helping them to finally move on by convincing them that doing that is kind of cringe.
4. A film about finding love at the bottom of the ocean, maybe called "40,000 Leagues Under the She"
5. A film about an amateur rapper who isn't very good making it big on a good work ethic and gumption while still not actually being very good at rapping, but it turns out to be a "The Truman Show" + "Carrie" situation
6. A sequel to "Rosemary's Baby" where it turns out the kid that was born just isn't all that interested in being the Antichrist and the cult is really let down by it.
7. Alright I have to go back to doing other stuff now I have to start preparing to make dinner. You got this Joel!

Question about the music that plays during the scene at the end with his mom, at the table. Is that an original song you recorded yourself, or a public domain song? I thought it really elevated the scene, and I'm curious about where it came from since you didn't mention it in the budget.

Less about credits and more about making something earnestly together. Everyone in this film is a longtime friend/family I’ve been making stuff with forever. It’s definitely something I want to make a video discussing more in depth.

I'm not sure if you've ever talked about this, but do you never pay people? Because for me, that seems to be the main budget. Like I have all the gear, but it just doesn't feel right to ask people to give me their time for free.
I feel like it depends on the people you're filming with. Judging by his usual short videos it's more of a friends get together and make something fun type of thing, I'm not ruling out that he shares some of the revenue with the people involved in the projects but that's the feel I get from it. Another thing is the amount of shooting for each scene, in the video he mentions that for scenes like the bowling and motel ones they filmed only a small portion of the time they actually spent there (bowling for 2 hours while filming like 10 minutes). I'm no film expert but that's my take on it, good luck making cool stuff!
It always seemed to me that they "pay" in time for eachothers skits and shorts. There's a lot of crossover with their appearances on eachothers channels
Great question, the other replies sort of cover it, but I’m going to go in depth into this in a future video. Working with friends and having a mutual understanding is such an imperative part of any independent filmmaker’s process.

Kidding aside, my favorite movie as a teenager was Two Front Teeth, because it was a competent horror comedy (which is a type of film I love) made on a budget of $100k, which is like the catering budget of similar films.
It was so cool to see a really solid character piece made on 1% of even that budget.
