Zaria is a science writer based in London, though her path to journalism has been far from typical. Since she graduated from university in 2009, she’s worked for environmental charities in Greece and Tobago, a hospital laboratory, a bank, and helped manage an elderly care business in Singapore. Zaria has also squeezed in two Master’s degrees and edited the Cambridge University science magazine, BlueSci. Now she writes about a range of science topics, from sea monkeys to space umbrellas.

I totally agree with what is being said here. I am 60 this year and I feel and live on like I am 25! I feel great. I have been thinking and feeling better since about 50. It really is a state of mind that needs to be altered by oneself in order to actually be better. We need to 'believe' we can feel younger !
Such a refreshing perspective. Remind people that aging is a perspective shift is something I try to teach in all of my senior’s chair Yoga classes. We aren’t meant to be victims of old age. It’s nice to know science agrees.
Excellent perspective! I’m turning 70 soon. Look at my picture. Do I look like you think 70 looks? No- that is not me at 50. That picture was taken in 2019! We must change the way we perceive old and instead…think ageless!

Continue please to educate the public. Many very young people were hired over me even though I have decades more training & experience! Common response: “ not a good fit” without an interview even though I have been doing the exact same job for decades as what they were advertising, have excellent health & fitness as well as excellent references. Age discrimination is alive & well!
Very well-said and explained! This is a whole different perspective that we should encourage more people to be open with. Just like in reviving mind, we raise awareness in misconceptions about older ages or ageism. Not all adults would experience things such as memory loss, fatigue, or weakness. Ageism specially on older ages should be discourage since most of our older adults still have the strength and capability similar to a teenager!

Finally someone who calls out the tastelessness of those birthday cards. While yes they're supposed to be funny there's something very negative and derogatory about them as well. It's almost like they're writing your future for you. Great talk.
If anyone gave me a card like that my reply would be very unladylike!
When I was 20 I would talk to men who were in their 50s, and think boy there old. Now I'm in my 50s and don't feel any different than when I was 20. I still appreciate good looking ladies, food, good movies etc. I might be a bit fatter, but I don't really care, I'm not out to impress anyone. Life is good, live one moment at a time. And believe me, time does move by very fast.

What I like the most is talking how was life when they were young and it,s always so uplifting They knew how to have fun Also they didn,t have the stress that we have now Actually more and more young people like me want to go back in time and try to live simple lives like our elderly now
In 3rd world country they keep the grand parents with them and they live longer...food for thought !!
Everyone who thinks that everyone over 65 is fragile and vulnerable needs to watch this video. Treating the elderly the way our society does is highly detrimental to them. Next time you see an elderly person standing on the pavement near a crossing, please don't assume they need help to cross the road. A couple of weeks ago I was standing in the middle of the pavement pondering on which supermarket to go shopping in, when a young woman came up and asked me if I needed help to cross the road! I've never felt so insulted in my life! I don't need help with anything, but she assumed I was incompetent because of my age.
McDonald's offers senior discounts on coffee when a person is 55 or older. So if a person is 55 or older then they are a senior citizen. A so-called psychologist friend of mine however, says that a person is not old unless they are 85 or older. And I told him that most people don't even see 85 years old. He is 72. So there is real disconnect and denial.
Some of us are getting older and older all the time.
i hate ageism too, but some of this is misleading. yes, older people catch fewer colds than twenty-somethings, but that might be because they're getting more sleep and socialising in smaller circles. happiness might have something to do with responsibility and stress, both of which tend to grow as you reach middle age, then shrink as you get a little older. so, whether getting older is a positive in and of itself hasn't been established.
i'm being picky, but I do think her message is important. our society venerates and fetishises youth - look at the music industry, for example. musicians have a lot to say as they get older, but generally speaking it's rare to see a new act break past the age of thirty. it's a shame, really.
noisyneil, thank you for your thoughts. Apparently I am not on the normal range if being sixty equates to a reduction in stress and responsibilities. On the contrary, both categories have peaked.
I agree with that assessment noisyneil ..... and many do not care how many may judge us - as I enter the last quarter of my life, I notice the slow deterioration of my biological body due to genetics and usage over the many years. I cannot perform many of the physical activities in my earlier life, and take lite heart pills and function with a prosthetic joint to continue some sort of a quality life. I read 80% of men 80 years old have cancer cells in their prostate - Still happy to be alive for all the wonderful moments.

There is something wrong with the title. "Embrace the Old Age". Should be "Embrace your Age at Any Age".

At 87 I know that what was said here has lots of merit. I was exceptionally fit and well at 60, very fit at 70, fit at 80 and...and 87 am still fit, well, happy, and into many pursuits. I still pump iron at the gym, do yoga stretches, practice meditation, write, teach, present to audiences and am becoming happier as the years proceed. Life-long-learning and a philosophy of life that embraces body, mind and soul is the key. Death being just a transition and a knowing we can take all that we've learned and experienced along with us to the 'next dimension.'

Nearly every form of discrimination has become socially & professionally unacceptable, yet is the most often practiced as well as widely accepted. Ageism is common, it's still wrong.

She speaks with slight lisp, but is your condescending comment unnecessary? How does how one speaks (or one's appearance) got to do with one's intelligence, ability, and talents? She is commendable for her courage and good intention to give the speech to encourage others.
Focus on the contents instead of that irrelevant thing. She's really interesting!

well I run.,10 miles a day do crossfit and weights. so im in better shape then.people have my age. it all depends on taking care of urself .
Well good for you, keep doing it, but realize she is not talking about physical exercise. She is talking about the psychological effects of aging and what our own minds can do to our bodies.

i agree!! i am only 35 but i know that when i will be 45 i will get the cold treatment from society/ it's great that her dad started a new carrier at 65 but did you notice the asian lady with him? girlfriend? new wife? she doesn't look past 45!! so ????
I'm not so sure. If, 60% of old women experience ageism and 40% of men, or some other numbers, does that mean old men don't have a problem?

No one can change there way -getting older sucks... age discrimination just turned 54... younger girls won't go for me anymore...skin stars sagging losing muscle... I feel invisible.... Im very depressed... it branches out to every area of your life... my dad told me not to get old... Getting older sucks... I don't mind the age part what I hate is that our bodies age and nothing can help that..... plastic surgery creams diets being healthy will make u be healthy and look your best.... but no matter what u do ur never gonna look in your 20s or early 30s anymore... I wish they had a cure... if we could die looking like we were a good lloking 30 that is ok...Ihate it and im so frustrated I just dont want to live... thats how you can stop aging

Sadly, in society world-wide, age doesn’t seem to matter if you’re rich like USA president Trump.
If Donald Trump worked into any business either in the US or the UK and PROVIDED he was liked as a person, then the business would snap him up along with his abilities to create wealth. Being wealthy does give you a head start in life and as I say, in this life, it really does not matter what you are, but who you know that gets you places. Unfortunately in that narrative I forgot the word 'Greed' because you can also have too much in my opinion.
Wealth does trump a lot of things. But many are NOT wealthy, so they are going to have a face that shows age, and are going to have to navigate life 'as is'. So perhaps we need a society that does not look down on a lack of youth or on a lack of great wealth. Maybe instead we can all respect and include people based on whether they treat people decently, and on other features of their character.
