  • Today I'm planting my sweet peas which is always fun because I get to choose the colour combinations. This year is predominantly pastel. It’s also time to trim back the Penstemon now that the frosts have past.
I will only ever recommend products that I use regularly and believe to be good value.

Everything is looking so nice. Cosmo, though, steels the show every time😊 sweet , little guy. I only have 1 penstamen called, 'Mesa' and I can't wait to see it bloom soon. Lilacs are in full bloom here now and the air is just intoxicating. I savor every fleeting moment with them. I also grow Baptisia and loads of peonies and roses. My gosh, it's so exciting this time of year! I run home from work every day like a kid with a new puppy. It's horrible to admit, but gardening really is an addiction 😂

Thanks Jane - yes, Cosmo is always around somewhere. I catch him on film by chance. Our lilacs are in bloom too and smell divine but I feel like I have less flowers this year - it may be something to do with my pruning technique so I'll have to do some research. I love wandering around the garden when I wake up - so peaceful. I'm out there even before I have my coffee or breakfast - best time of day for me 😁

Amazing how you manage and present your paradise.
Always when your videos come up I click immediately. Great choice of plants and music in combination with your uplifting spirit. Husband and cats assisting.
    Best wishes from Germany.
Here I had a shock because my nicest Ranunculus were stolen. They were blooming and in small pots.

Wow, thank you Kati. That's such a lovely thing to say.
I can't believe someone stole your ranunculus! Disgusting behaviour. So disappointing. I always wonder how Claus Dalby manages to have his wonderful display outside his gates and avoid theft....
Hope you have better luck next year.

I only have a couple of Penstemon but they are not as beautiful as the ones you have planted. I love pastel colors and those sweet peas are going to be divine. Does Cosmo like hanging out in the garden with you as you plant, he is so adorable.

Thanks Jane - yes, I seem to be leaning towards the pastel shades in all my gardening these days - except for dahlias, of course!

I cut my penstemons back last week. So many ne growths were overtaking the old floppy stems. I have Penstemon Dark towers which looks quite similar to huskers red. The foliage keeps its' burgundy tones throughout the season and the flowers are such a pretty pink. Your pink tulip is beautiful - it looks just like a mini peony! I love garnet. I had it everywhere in my garden and gave loads away but I sadly lost it in the cold 2022 Winter. I must look out for another plant- such a strong, vigorous variety. I have Hidcote Pink from my late mum's garden . It was her favourite hence I dug it up and planted it in my garden. Beautiful sweet peas, Annette. I have just plumped for a simple Spencer mix this year. I usually grow lots of varieties but I had so much going on at sowing time, I decided to keep it simple. Happy gardening 🙂 x

I'm not that fond of Husker's red, the foliage is pretty but the flowers are just plain boring and nothing special - I may well pull it all. And it always looks a bit drab and messy. Maybe I should try Dark Towers instead - are the flowers pretty?

@@cottoverdi Yes the flowers are pretty and even more sso with the contrast of the beautiful pink with the wine/burgundy foliage. I love it.

My seet peas haven't grown at all since I've planted them out in my garden. It's been over 2 months. They were doing so well in their containers beforetheywere planted out in march. My weather here in the states z 5 have been cool with wet spring weather.

It's probably the weather - they will grow faster in warmer weather. I don't plant mine out until the daytime temps are warmer and they take a week or 2 to get going. They can cope with cool conditions but maybe Z5 is too cold in March? Have you given them a feed?

Beautiful sweet pea choices! I am growing a bold pink, several blues and a white this year, to be combined (individually and mixed) with nigella and the secondary stems of bupleurum or bells of Ireland in bouquets.
BTW, I would not throw out the black tulips. They are attractive, just not ideal in this combination. Check out Gardeners Worlds episode 8, similar tulip is mixed with white and pale pink, and interplanted with a twiggy-floaty kind of plant with pale flowers and black stems. Or you might try your black tulips with a greenish white tulip of different shape (parrot?) or height or perhaps an early white allium and something textural that complements them. A series of not too big or heavy black obelisks or other garden art could also help tie things together.

Thanks Heike. I've pulled all the black tulips for this year - they were just upsetting me too much! But, some of the bulbs got stuck in the ground so they will be back next year but I will add Merlot to the display and I hope this will help. 😊
