  • Hi everyone! It's Annabel, welcome back to my channel! Today we are looking at three of the orchids I purchased from Salon Orchidei back in July: Phalaenopsis floresensis , Phalaenopsis schilleriana x gigantea (Schillgig) and Phalaenopsis Princess kaiulani 'flava' x gigantea 'alba'. We will be repotting them into a self-watering variation of Semi-Hydro, a form of passive hydroponics using a mixture lava rock and LECA as a medium to provide constant moisture and aeration. I will then be doing a three month update to see how they got on and any adjustments I had to make.
    I hope you enjoy the video!
    For any newcomers, welcome to my channel! And to everyone- thanks so much for watching!

    Great video. Love to see the progress on these. I recently did an experiment with a phal over the weekend into a self watering semi hydro setup. Love the idea of pebbles on the top layer to keep moisture in, and implemented it to avoid that dry top layer;

    That Schillgig is so beautiful! I recently got a Mok Choi Yew x violacea and it came with the saddest root system, but it's already putting up a new leaf and root nub! I'm excited to see your gigantea hybrids progress.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      I have bellina x gigantea, Gigabell- Mok choi yews counterpart 🙂 it's also a slow grower compared to bellina, but is getting massive! Having bellina or violacea in there will speed up the growth, yours at 75% violacea should in theory be a great grower! 🙂 Of course percentages aren't really accurate ways to look at genetics with orchids, but it's definitely got a good chance of taking more after violacea 🙂🤞🤞🤞 I hope it continues to thrive for you! 🙂

    Haha, nice fat root. :D Nothing makes me happier! Oh, I agree, gigantea is very slow indeed. I have a tiny one in bark and moss. I keep it at around 24-26 degrees of Celsius, in fairly high light (LED light) and while it is growing, it is much slower than any other Phalaenopsis. But I love the silvery leaf. I think it is very pretty. 😍

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      I agree, just love seeing fat juicy new roots! Glad I'm not alone, I got a mid sized gigantea from Claessen and it started to dry/ darken it's crown almost straight away. I thought uh oh, crown rot, but then it tried to grow a nub of a leaf tip out of the crown... which then stopped, so I actually wonder if there is something wrong with mine. It has slowly made new roots though so it could just be that it was set back but would recover if I kept it hotter. But the conservatory was often over 30C this summer. I may move it onto a heat mat and see if that helps it along, it's been over a year now 😥

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants 3 года назад

      @@TheOrchidRoom Oh no! I am sorry to hear that! I got temperatures during the summer that were quite close to 30, but I don't think they went over 30, maybe only for couple of days, up to a week. I would die if they were over 30 in my room 😂 I hope it grows well in these temperatures though! I do have a heat mat, but I am saving it for a special hoya that needs to arrive soon xD Mine has been working on a new leaf for over a month now, so I shouldn't complain! I think maybe you can get another one, just to be safe :)

    If you can get your hands on a phalaenopsis odorion or scention by a company called Sion in the Netherlands I HIGHLY recommend it! It is the best smelling orchid to me. Smells like perfume, a really nice perfume and the scent is strong. I was able to get one sent to me by a kind person in Florida that found them at his local nursery. I have not been able to find one for sale online anywhere else in the US. I imagine they are available in Europe. The leaves of mine look similar to schilleriana. I have no idea how they produce these orchids (genetic engineering), but the flowers last for months. If you enjoy great smelling orchids I think you’d really like this. Seems a very strong, hardy orchid too.

    You mentioned that you don’t bury the steam because of stem rot. I have Phalaenopis that have 5 to 6 cm steams?????

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      Hi Paula! Yes, the stem shouldn't be buried. I have phalaenopsis with 20cm stems, all fully leafed out, no need to bury unless you lose the roots and leaves on the lower part of the stem. Then you can think about cutting the stem to allow new roots to enter the medium more easily 🙂 but that's only a worry if there are not many roots at the base, I've personally not had to do it yet as mine have kept their roots both at the base and from the stem.

    Speaking of seedlings. What happened to those mini flasks you had to emergency deflask?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      The ones that were already yellow and dodgy looking pretty much died straight away. The others did great until I moved them in summer and they haaaaated the conservatory- low humidity, dryness, dry layers, hot temps, toasted babies 🤦‍♀️😥 I did actually film all of it, I had the idea to do a weekly diary and store it all then put it out in one vid. And then I accidentally deleted the footage on my phone. So just a fail all round! I bought some more flasks to try again with, in the lounge this time with a more stable, controlled climate! So I'll start again with that diary too! 🤦‍♀️🙈

    Hi Annabel.....love you....My question today is about getting my orchids to rebloom. Now in semi-hydro....I have good growth on all of them (150+)...but rebloom is sparse... I have 6 of a kind with only one Spiking...???

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      Hi Ron! Reblooming will depend on the type of the orchid, the overall health, the season and the level of light they are getting. Complex hybrid phals- autumn, Cattleya usually summer to autumn but some can bloom year round. Summer blooming phals summer, Oncidiums and miltoniopsis spring and autumn. If they arent blooming when they are on track to and are otherwise healthy you may need to up the light level or increase the red spectrum. It usually takes a few months following a repot for the orchid to adjust enough to bloom, assuming no set back, when it is able as new growths mature. Hope that helps!

    • @roncastro7195
      @roncastro7195 3 года назад

      @@TheOrchidRoom Thank You....I have everything in check.....still don't know. I still have a lot not spiking ..right next to some that are... random..

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      By some, what do you mean exactly? Phalaenopsis? Species, hybrids? Different species flower at different times of the year. Complex hybrids can vary. Some need to be more mature than others etc. Even in a seedling population, some stronger seedlings will bloom years before others. Lots of variables! In time they will all bloom if conditions are correct! I wouldn't worry, just keep an eye on health and enjoy the journey. If they are healthy and there is enough light, they will bloom 🙂

      It's such a shame!! If you have an in-excess near you, I'm not sure if they're widespread, but they often do discount bulk bought plastic outers. I've taken to popping into there frequently and buying in 10s when they get something good in!
