  • Hi everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel! In today's video we are taking a look at some of my favourite foliage orchids, which I would say rival or exceed traditional houseplants for beautiful foliage! As a bonus, you also get beautiful, often fragrant flowers with these. So, what's not to love?!
    All of the orchids I have picked here to show you are easy to care for, and I have had most of them between one to four years, so I have a good perspective on their likes and dislikes. I haven't shown any cooler growing or trickier foliage orchids, although I do have a few. I wanted to stick to pretty orchids that I grow in my grow room, that tolerate hot, dry (30C, ~30% humidity) summers and intermediate winters (I heat the room to 18-24C, 60-70% humidity), with the rest of the seasons ranging between 18-26C and 40-60% humidity. I have a range of temperatures and humidity levels across the seasons that these orchids grow well at, so I would say they are very un-fussy. They also dealt well with the house move and environment change.
    I haven't included any that get leaf die back or curling during low humidity and hotter temperatures, as I think the avearage home may not have good humidity, and this doesn't matter for these orchids if they are provided with good watering practices. So I think these are all suited to the home very well!
    Sorry about the audio here, this was filmed after work quickly and I couldn't redo it...I may need a better mic as the next investment!
    Do you have any favourite foliage orchids? Let me know down below, it would be fun to make a list! One I didn't include here, and I should have, is my little variegated Neofinetia falcata- shown here: • Orchid Spotlights! Two... . The reason I didn't include it initially is simply that it is extremely slow-growing, compared to normal form Neofinetia. So I think it is less suitable, unless you are really into Neofinetia.
    For any newcomers, welcome to my channel! And to everyone- thanks so much for watching!

    Thank you so much for doing my 'lil video suggestion :D ! I really did enjoyed watching it!! I did get back to Orchids thanks to foliage Orchids! I was like " at least, if it won't flower, I'll still have nice foliage to look at". Thankfully, because of the videos, advices and tips from you and all of the Orchid people, I was able to make a few of my Orchids bloom for me :D !

      Hey! No problem! I wasn't sure about putting screenshot of requests up, I've done that before with names in and some people don't like it, which is totally understandable! It was a great suggestion, so thanks for that! I love orchids even when they aren't blooming, and some are just so beautiful anyway, even if they never bloomed. Another one is Maxillaria rachenhieniema which I ordered from Ecuagenera last month, but it's supposed to be tricky and isn't here yet so I couldn't include it. So glad your orchids are doing well 🙂

    Oh, Annabel! As soon as I finished watching your video I jumped to my usual orchid seller's website to see if they had any bronze maiden, which they... hadn't! Not sure if this is good or bad! Maybe I should wait to be a bit of a better grower...? But the temptation: those silver leaves!
    Lovely video as usual :-)

      I wouldn't say admirable, but I took it slowly with unmounting the anceps and did an intermediate "stick the whole thing in a pot" stage, and I think that really helped. We talked about it at the time and you reassured me you wouldn't have removed it at the time of year either, so thankyou as always 🙂💗

    I love my giant bush of a Maxillaria tenuifolia, it's a huge ball of arching leaves, I am in love with it.

    some mottled-leaf paph leaves feel like sand paper, similar to Psychopsis :)
    As far as leaf-pattern and shape are concerned, I also recommend the Japanese and Chinese Cymbidium which have variegated leaves and shapes of various types, and the long leaves are so stylish, in mild wild especially.

    • @TheOrchidRoom

    If you're now getting into other "houseplants" (my plant journey is opposite than yours), I totally suggest you get an Aeschynanthus marmoratus, you'll love it. It's also way more beautiful in real life, hopefully I'll have a video of it pretty soon.

    I love this video! Several new on my wish list. I prefer plants with nice foliage, as the flowers are more uncertain for a beginner like me. I just stopped killing Phalaenopsis (2 live ones now) and have 3 different Paphiopedilum (my break through with orchids).

  • @mostlyorchids

    I have the Paph Lynleigh Koopowitz (delenatii x malipoense) and the leaves are beautiful, dark green with light green lacing, there's also a burgundy undertone under my 600 lumen LED shop lights (my least bright lights). Also, my Schillmann has similar leaves to yours (it's the same cross with the mannii black) and the undersides of the leaves are completely purple (not red, but purple) under my 900 lumen LED shop lights. I really like the foliage of Zygonisia Murasaki Komachi, it looks like huge blades of grass, mine has leaves that are almost 2 feet long and it is soooooo easy to grow. Chysis orchids have wonderful grass-like foliage that are similar in appearance to the Murasaki Komachi but are more rounded.

      This Angraecum leonis I got as a small, dehydrated plant just over a year and a half ago, from grossraeschen orchids. I have 2 other angraecum leonis, one a seedling from Roellke with narrower leaves, growing very fast, another smaller, fatter plant from Schwerter. All grow well, obviously purchased as smaller plants than they are now but none were tiny, not even the seedling really!

    • @annathornburn4716
      @annathornburn4716 3 года назад

      @@TheOrchidRoom I wish I could post a pic here. I’ve had 3 in the past and all died. I got one from Schwerter after seeing a previous video of yours and loving the size, but mine was two little plants on a mount rather than one decent sized one and one rotted and the other looks awful. So I got another from Schwerter recently (cheaper so I know it would be smaller) but it’s absolutely tiny. Will be year and years before it’s half the size of yours!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      It's a shame RUclips removed the PM feature! The one I got from schwerter is slower growing so I do wonder about the different forms, as it has a slightly different shape and size. If Roellke still have some may be worth trying their 'young plant' size, as it's actually quite reasonable and I can attest that it's a fast grower.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      Hi! I know, the malipoense is so stunning! I got it as a seedling and it has made a couple of leaves for me, but no side shoots yet. I know it's actually a miniature paph though, compared to many, so it's possible this is actually blooming size now. So it could be a bloom sheath! I was expecting for it to make more side shoots first though, but it's supposed to be slower growing than many, so I'm not sure!
