Hi Nina. You’ve cleared up my confusion about S/H & S/W. When I first started growing some orchids indoors I decided that I wanted to have wicks so that with leca in clear pots which have air holes & opaque masks without any holes I’ve created a self watering system and not semi hydro. What I didn’t understand at the time was that I need to have a wet/dry cycle and because it was quite humid for some time I almost lost a few phals due to root rot. The Oncidiums faired better because they could tolerate the constant wet in the pots. It’s taken me months to sort out what I need to do and not do, thanks to watching a lot of videos, so I do appreciate this video for finally clarifying semi hydro. Thank you.
Hi Renate 😍💐 good morning, lovely lady! I am so glad that another nugget of information is added to your vast library of knowledge, Renate! These videos can be a little confusing, especially when I don't have exact examples to show and am talking theoretically. Imagine if I could show a root system coming out of the ventilation holes and then talk about the repotting issues that would pose... total different story to explain a point. I appreciate your feedback, lovely lady! Thank you so much 🤗 and thank you so much for watching 🥰 I hope your day starts out beautifully and continues to get more and more beautiful ❤️🌸
I can attest to your statement of using pots with multiple holes is not conducive for self watering. I tried this early in my orchid journey and found the Leca to dry out from above the middle up…even with a wick through the center. But I do see it may work with the right environment:high humidity to help with moisture. Great information as always ❤️
🌸🥷🏼Trish San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 Guten Morgen!! I am of the opinion that, when talking about semi hydroponics, we need to be very specific with what the pot should look like, even when it comes to self watering! Or, it is not semi hydroponics. I am not trying to be petty, and in many environments a hybrid set up would work IF the humidity is a constant all year round 70% and up. But then, good luck on the repot... that decision is a personal one, and whatever anyone is comfortable with, roll with it if it works well in said specific environment. The damage, however, will be exponential! With leca... the wicking gets totally lost! My opinion... as I always say to myself after a video like this... 'but what do I know!?' 😬 thank you so much for watching, Freundin!! Wishing you a wonderful and successful Tuesday ❤️🌸

🦒🙋♀🙌💖 Great informative video 👌👌 It is always good to give growing methods its proper classification by knowing the differance and what are the pros and cons. The hybrids are very useful too. It's amazing how orchids can adapt to the various methods we decide to grow them into as long as we attend to their basic needs😮Not to forget that we, orchid growers, must be comfortable with our methods too. It may take quite a while to reach that balance. Happy tuesday, amiga mia y vecina favorita, to you and yours 💖😘😍🤗
FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good morning, meine liebe Freundin! I say that a lot in my videos, that everyone needs to feel comfortable with what they do and how they grow. There are 2 important messages in this video... one being that we cannot expect roots to stay in the pot, and not grow out of the ventilation holes causing massive destruction when it comes time to repot, and ventilation holes are for a wet dry cycle set up, never for a semi hydroponic set up. I could go on and on about when what can apply, depending on each environment and what growers can achieve in their climate or space. But, in many videos, I say that the grower has to be comfortable with the decision making process and the options are endless. Specifics, the comments are there for a reason 👍🏼👍🏼 I thought I was dreaming early this morning, when it rained 😅 it was raining! Just a little shower, but a heavy one and woohoo!!! So happy. Unfortunately I was not aware that it was going to happen or else I would have pulled orchids from the shelf. But, it resulted in a nice humid day! 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! Really appreciate your time watching and supporting me 😘 hope your day is beautiful already 🙌🏼 much love to you ❤️🌸
Hmm, didn't some viewer tell you that antennatum is a blooming machine? Air holes in s/h pots is helpful for the Asccentrum types, since their roots just don't like to be in a "closed" space, it gives them more "free air". Annabelle had hers in mesh pots with a reservoir (IIRC) and the roots stopped dying, although they still wanted to grow out of the pots. In terms of how the s/h works, they won't make much of a difference, other than it may dry faster than if there aren't air holes. It may aid in overall root growth, but I can't say that for certain. I think people tend to want to grow in pots with airholes because that is what they are used to. The thing is, air holes are generally used to improve/even out dry time in organic media, they don't really serve much other purpose. Since you don't want s/h to dry out, there isn't really a need for them (except in the case of Ascocentrum types, I guess).
Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Some viewer did, yes... and I was faster and more diligent with the pest maintenance to make sure that no caterpillars take out my spikes this year. 💪🏼While I was good with the antennatum, I was not so good with the Tolumnias, so.... we have a bit a problem there 🤦🏼♀️ ventilation holes, are there for tweaking based on environment, but still, when dealing with leca as the media, it should not dry out, or else it isn't SH. Tweaking a set up to make it work for an orchid is the best thing to do to make it work, but then we have to be careful as to how we classify the set up.... it is not SH if there are ventilation holes. I hope that I made the difference clear throughout the video, especially at the end.... hybrid is great depending on environment and orchid in question, as per your example. I have my asconcentrum growing roots every which way but still managed to keep that one root in the pot since it started to grow down. I would not want ventilation holes in any of my selfwatering or semi hydro pots, just because of how the roots behave and will grow out of the holes... and big doo doo when it comes time to repot. In my opinion, ventilation holes are for a wet / dry cycle set up. I don't want to come across as being pedantic about the different 'set ups' and how the pots should be, because everyone needs to know what works best for them, but to classify something and call it semi hydro when it is not, is misleading. I hope that I achieved that in this video 🤞🏼 hope your day is off to a great start!! Miss Schnauzer is back to being happy pup and that Arena has settled in and knows her place in the pack 👍🏼 harmony all around!! Thank you so much for watching, Michael 😘🌸
@@NinjaOrchids well, if we really want to be pedantic about names, semi-hydro is itself a misnomer. It would, more correctly, be called passive hydroponics (versus active hydroponics where water is circulated from a reservoir around the roots continuously). In reality, what we call SH is any setup with inorganic media that wicks from a reservoir. Self watering is simply a variation on SH but is still SH (like all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares). Rabbit holes, rabbit holes, rabbit holes.
