In 1994 Sweden signed the first treaty with NATO and since then Sweden has trained and even fought with NATO forces in amongst other actions Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. Even for the general public, it has been clear since the 80s that we sooner or later would become a part of NATO. Honestly, Ukraine defeating Russia is great on a strategic level, but I think unlike some more far away countries we can empathize because we have a lot of eastern Europeans living in Sweden, everyone has a friend from the former soviet union and we've heard some of the horrible things that were done to you, and of course Russia has a habit of flying nuclear bombers into our airspace for fun, and the older generations remember the cold war back when we had a big military focus in society. In Sweden, there was an accident in 1968 when a 155mm exploded in the chamber of a howitzer, some deaths and injuries. ALL live 155 was recalled and emptied of the explosive. Then repeated and refilled, because they suspected that it was air bubbles that was compressed as the grenade was fired and enough energy was released to ignite the grenade. The howitzer got a crack in the chamber but was restored to mint condition. And went on to be very accurate compared to others who had developed some play in bearings and such. In 1981 was the HE grenades released for peace time practice. This howitzer was the 4th gun in our battery when I did my conscripted service, and we had some officers that was in that unit when this occurred. They never talked about it, just acknowledged that they were present there when in happened. There is a peice of 8mm film that shows everything until the burst burnt the film.

The main issue with ammo production is to ramp up the number of these expensive production lines while not being sure what the future demands are.
But with Russia behaving like this, it looks like NAMMO will have to produce a lot of shells for many years, just to restock and expand the inventories of the militaries in Europe.

In actual military aid in billions $USD: US $44B, Germany $17B, UK $7B, Norway $4B, Denmark $4B, Poland $3B, Netherlands $3B, Sweden $2B, Canada $2B. A new US aid package to Ukraine of $61 billion just passed in Congress. I haven't heard or read of any EU country that has a new aid package matching even half that amount, have you? Thought so. Many Americans feel we shouldn't give so much aid since Russia is invading and annexing countries on the Eurasian landmass, not the North American continent. At least Europe stopped funding their enemy's military R&D and build up. Plus funding the invasion and annexation of Chechnya (twice), Georgia and now Ukraine. I mean, heck, you guys should have learned something from hosting two world wars and being the pawns during the Cold War.

Until then every purchase we've made, that are still in the pipeline, will be rerouted directly to Ukraine. Target for completion of the new production line (and training the staff for it) is June 2025. It's probably the most modern facility in Europe at the moment and will possibly supply a quarter of Europe's contribution to Ukraine once it's complete. Many countries don't have shell production capabilities simply because unless there's a war on, it's uneconomic to maintain the facilities, especially as smaller countries don't need much for training purposes given their limited number of tubes in their arsenals.

Thank you Sweden. As a swiss I am ashamed of my country (as usual) taking profit from it's so called "neutrality" as an excuse to not do anything. There was time back in the cold war )ay the eighties) where you had a rather strong anti-sovet propaganda in Switzerland but now that Russia is no longer a left leanist country but a far right nationalist and extermist country Switzerland don't see Russia agression in central EUrope as an issue ? Go figure, maybe the Swiss Conseil Federal is not too far away ideologically from Putin after all.

@@duartesimoes508 The amount of steel used in a shell is not ever, even remotely, going to be a problem. A single car assembly line sees more steel go past in an hour than Ukraine fires shells per day (even assuming they have all they need). The explosive component is made from compounds derived from oil and nitric acid. The "expensive part" is the energy consumption in explosives manufacturing. It's basically a gigantic chemical battery that can discharge all it's energy in an instant. But that energy has to come from somewhere.

When it comes to the defense industry, people always talk about production lines like those at Ford or Audi, but it's mostly manual work. Something is ordered so rarely that it makes no sense to produce it any other way. There is no such thing as tanks on a treadmill. As long as we don't declare an emergency and mobilize, there won't be anything like that. The best example is WW2. Germany reached its highest level of arms production in 1944. This shows how sluggish arms production is.
