    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive RUclips experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong, and it actually does within a minute of a start of the episode due to wind noise...
    This time, we examine a 2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.0 V6 and see if it is any good for the modest amount of money one costs these days. Be prepared for dreadful sound quality, especially terrible wind noise absolutely appalling editing, surprisingly lovely beige leather seats, bad video quality, poor camerawork, references to Mark III Ford Fiesta keys, strange specification choices and an awful lot of luxury for not very much money! Nothing untoward, then...
    Many thanks to Rob from the We Shall Feast RUclips channel for supplying this wonderful Jaguar: / golders99

    Love the No Budget Reviews as I have already mentioned. What a car for next to no money. I drove a manual 3 litre on a test drive when they were new with my brother but that's another story. Lovely cars even if they are Mondeos with a fancy body. Good work Joseph.

      Oh, the 3 Litre! Gosh, those were fast.... If you get an X-Type with a leather interior, then it doesn't really matter if they are a bit cramped and they are not the last word in dynamism, you do feel a bit special, particularly if you have paid £800 for a car like this! More No Budget Reviews next week, sir...

    I can’t think of a reason to own one but I still fancy one.

      Oh yes, sir! The interior is absolutely amazing. I also quite want one, although the rear space is a bit restricted, as I expected. The Rover 75 is better in this respect, the E46 BMW less so.

    My father had one of these in SE trim, but the same colour. For the larger wheels with low profile tyres, it gave a choice of tyre pressure: 30psi for 'comfort' but compromised fuel economy or 37psi for 'standard'

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Thanks very much indeed for watching! Yes, a very soft and comfortable ride in the base model thanks to those large tyre sidewalls.

    Great review. I really like the idea of owning one of these, particularly like the estate version. Heard the horror stories of the sills rotting, also heard this was not such a problem in later models....2008 ish. Very tempting indeed

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 года назад

      Thanks Matt! Yes, for under £1,000, they are quite tempting. There was a facelifted model in 2008, so perhaps they fixed it after the facelift. The estate does look nice, doesn't it?

    I read somewhere that there are only 18% shared with the MK3 Mondeo. The floorpan was used but modified. I owned a late X-Type, a 2.2 Diesel auto Sport and it was a fab car. That replaced my much loved Rover 75 Connie Diesel. The Rover was a more relaxing car to drive and possibly better built but the X-Type was a lovely car too. Very underated.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 года назад +1

      Thanks ever so much indeed, Graham! Yes, the rear suspension in an X-Type is quite different, and is probably responsible for the restricted rear space. I understand that the 2008 onwards X-Types were really good, although they weren't sold for long. I actually did an MG ZT-T on No Budget Reviews in December, and it was very similar to a 75. I make a lot of references to both cars in it! We are pondering on getting a Rover 75 at some stage....

    It’s a Mondeo!! So said the detractors. Which I was always slightly confused about as the contemporary Mondeo was the best in its class at the time.
    Another good review. I did read that the earlier ones were better built than the later post 05 plate ones.
    The estate does look slightly better, but it’s long at 4.8 metres.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Colin! Yes, nothing wrong with a Mark III Mondeo, apart from the aforementioned sill corrosion issue, which is a given as they are similar underneath (although the rear suspension is a bit different). The Mondeo has much more rear passenger space, though. This is the only X-Type I have driven, so I can't comment on whether the earlier or later cars are better, but I agree that the estate does look very nice. A beige leather interior would be a must for me, though...

    I own a 2004 2.0 v6 X-type with same colour (auto climate control, 4 electric windows(duh), rear armrest, CD player, and the newer steering wheel with cruise control). The only problem that I'm having is with the fuel pump which seems a common fault on these cars.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 года назад +1

      Thanks very much indeed! You clearly don't have the base model, then? The fuel pump failed on our 2014 MG3 after four years and 48,000 miles, so clearly the pumps are a bit better than that, even if that they are a common issue. Your car does sound rather nice, I must say...

    Good call! always wondered about these - ie. if they had the reputation they deserved as complete money pit basket cases..then again a BMW/Lexus whatever of that age is going to be a money pit as well

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  4 года назад

      Yes, it's really the same as many cars of this era. Lexus IS200s also suffer from chronic corrosion, often around the sills, and yet most people don't say that they are terrible. The fact that a lot of parts are interchangeable with a Mondeo and the fact that the engine has timing chains for the petrols does make it interesting. They do also have other issues, but then which 11-19 year old luxury cars do not?

  • @seancooke4127
    @seancooke4127 3 года назад

    If I could find one without sill problems this is a great car. The diesels are economical but very noisy the V6s just fit the purpose. The interiors are where the cars excel, nicer than BMW and Audi. It may be tarred as Mondeo in a party dress but the Mondeo itself was class leading and it did forge a path to the popular XE I think.
    The estate was a nice design and I find a lot of my caravan acquaintances favour to X Type Estate's comfort and ability to pull good sized vans. Wonder if Jaguar expected that. I believe an XE Estate would be a worthwhile direction like the BMW and Mercedes C Class estates.
    I refuse to knock the X Type, even the 2.0 D because it was never a bad car. I for one can fit in the rear of most cars as I am 5 foot 4 tall. I do like the 3 series of this period particularly but I am sure that 3 Series owners of the time would, if they drove one for a few days, find parts of the X Type that look or feel better than the BMW.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 года назад

      That's right, much better without rotten sills.... This was one of the first real surprises of 2020, I absolutely loved it. The V6s are definitely the ones to go for, predictably. The XF Sportbrake is quite a good car, certainly the XE would be better as a Sportbrake too, in my opinion. I prefer this X-Type to an E46, funnily enough, I did drive both last year.

    Very happy with my X-Type 2.1V6 SE manual. These are much maligned cars not worthy of their reputation in my view. Yes, it's the base model, with the tape deck and wind-up rear windows! Still got a nice leather interior, though. Plenty of cars I know still had cassette decks in the early 2000s, including the lower specification 25s and 25s, so I suppose they had to encourage people to buy into the upper echelons somewhere.
