John, can't tell you how your videos have schooled me not only on the different techniques, but the details of each technique that make all the difference between the average guy and the successful fisherman
Just want to thank you John for your flounder videos. I caught 6 summer Flounder on vacay in Carolina Beach, N.C. Two of them were keepers. I used the same rig setup. Thanks again.
Wow! Great vids how the heck did i miss your channel!!! I learned more in the past hour then i have my whole life! So informative please keep them coming!
Hey John as a Long Island boy of 25 years with a few years spent in seabright NJ it ,s great to see some familiar places and fish ,you are a great teacher and can,t wait for another video thanks.😎
You were absolutely killing it! Back to back to back. Legend! Thanks for giving me a few more good tips. I'm going tomorrow out of point Judith. Hopefully we get a doormat or two
Fresh out of college I built my own fishing poles with the extended back to 'lock in' to my elbow when fighting a fish. Mine was a fly rod blank converted into a spinning outfit for trout. Glad to see others are finally after 30 years of my fishing are catching on the the convenience of the extended handle. I was not the original person to come up with this, but when I decided to build that style pole the rod builder whom I bought the materials from explained to me exactly how to build it. Works today even though the grommet that holds the two poles together is beginning to fail.
you're the man always educational I normally use live baits with a teaser but I learn something every day i def went n bought some gulp swimming mullet thanx for the info
Got to be one of my favorite vids bc of the boat had same one from age 15 too 28 then sold it to get one a little bigger and regret it ever seance brings back some good memories
Very good video John. You explain things very well. I live near Chincoteague & Wachapreague Va. and we fish for flounder here quite a bit. I use very similar rigs and tackle here and have found the gulp products work well for flounder. The new mantis shrimp gulps are really performing well this summer. Just FYI. Let me know if you ever head down this way.
Wow. I tried your technique yesterday! With the bucktale and the glass minnow. I kind of experimented. I had one rod sitting there with a hi low skirt rig with spearing on both hooks, and the other rod is your technique. Turns out I only caught one fish on the spearing rig and all the other plenty of fish took the glass minnow with gulp! John, you should do a video like this to show how much better it works with your technique!
Hey John..thanks for all you do to help the sport..my question has to do will the reel . On my setup I use a 3000 series spinning reel .. thought I give the bait caster a try..picked up a quantum accurist PT - 6.3:1 gear..15lb power pro line..use 1 to 1 1/2 oz buck tail .. fish in 25 - 50 feet of water.. at times with current.. seems with the bait caster the line comes off the reel much slower causing scoping.. don't have much experience with these type reels... just curious how you set yours up..I see there are two adjustments on either side of the spool..thanks ...rod is a st croix pc70mf
Thanks for the great vids and book. Really learning a lot. UW vids are super. If you really want to speed up fishing change to a left hand reel. No swapping. Really helps most when casting a lot though. Please tell me why you never cast out and reel the jig the bait back.
John Skinner Fishing I'm on the opposite South Coast not far from Portloe where they filmed the TV adaption of The Camomile Lawn based on a 1984 novel by Mary Wesley. I have a video fishing from Portloe called: Kayak Fishing - Fishing a New Mark - Navigating Using GPS. If you like the look of old Cornish fishing villages such as Port Isaac then you will love the look of Portloe and I talk a little bit about the history of the fishing when it was a thriving day boat fishing village.
When tying the braid to your rig I noticed you use a barrel swivel, do you ever tie braid to fluorocarbon direct? I noticed that a lot of the guys I fish with don't use swivels when jigging, does it make a difference?
John, great video as always keep them coming! Maybe with different teasers, lures, different kinds of Gulp, colors etc. Yes this teaser lure combo works perfectly! Followed this to the T and it produces Fluke over and over here in South Jersey. In calm water and choppy water as well. Have you had any success with pink Gulp or Gulp shrimp in different colors?
You ever try a double drop shot with freshwater gami worm hooks the gulps? I just found they are far more effective then putting the gulps on a bucktail? Just curious what you think?
Have another question for you! would the 6.3 reel do as good as the 7.1? Also I have found prices rangeing from 70.00 to 100.00! I know the 7.1 is faster, I wade fish most of the time
On the rig.. Is tying the top teaser closer to the bucktail a good idea? I seem to tie mine around 6-8in apart with the same rig. Wondering if i should extend it to the 12in like you do for this season
John, I fish long island and my boat is located in flanders bay. Whereabout on the sound are you fishing (east or west side, etc.)? I can drive to orient point in about 1 hr to 5.5 hrs in good conditions and I just want to know if it is worth the journey.
John, What size drift sock do you use on your kayak? plan to put your techniques to use this season & wanted to get your size recommendation before buying one. Love your videos & books. Thaks so much.
Hey John I like your videos a lot and I really think you should get a tangle free net. I got one from Walmart for 20 dollars and it is perfect for fluke and it is the best net ever that doesn't ever tangle
The videos are extremely informative and entertaining for a non-salt angler - like myself. My interest in the opportunity of saltwater angling is growing. Here are two videos I would like to view or be directed to, if I have overlooked them in your video library. 1) care - cleaning of tackle post usage in saltwater. 2) information on your boat for use in saltwater.
John...I would like to know how do you get away with using a fresh water reel....I would like to get this same set up...but don't want my reel to meet the grim reaper.....
Has anybody tried this for Plaice in the UK? I've been trying for the last 2 years to catch a flatfish on a lure with no luck so would be interested if anybody has had any luck with the same techniques?
Hey John, big fan of your videos and books. Any tips on how to get a kayak to the fluke out of port jeff harbor/mt misery? Is launching from the boat ramp and paddling the length of the harbor my best bet? Thanks man, keep these amazing videos commin'!
Thanks for the video! Loved it as always. In most of your videos for fluke you seem to be fishing the same general area. I'm not asking where but what kind of bottom do you look for? do you like to fish structure, find the bait, or do you just know where the fish are
Hey John, I was just wondering what kind of boat you are using in this video. I've seen it in some of your other videos as well so I was just wondering. Thanks.
This water appears so calm and waveless is it in the ocean? I went on my daughters boat yesterday @ traders cove marina on mantaloking Nj I was so disappointed to catch nothing.. the whole bay says it’s 5-7 feet of water deep I was surprised how shallow the water is ... is it possible to catch keeper fish 🐟 it 5 feet of water ?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks! We usually use a trolled herring early in the spring until live bait arrives. Live bait has been on fire recently and now I see some fisherman throwing swimbaits as well.
Really have enjoyed your videos so far, JS. Went out twice on party boats off N.Shore, LI. Not much luck out there with gulp & shrimp rigs. Do you recommend any differences on party boats? On one trip, the bucktails wouldn't hold bottom - switched to a 4oz Fluke ball w/ bucktail and gulp and a teaser w/ a gulp. not much luck there either
hjltax The Port Jeff and Mattituck Partyboats fish the same areas I fish. You can see one of them in the background of this video. I'm sure this technique works there. It sounds like you had tough conditions if you needed 4 ounces.
hjltax Make sure you are using braided line! That thin diameter is everything when jigging with light bucktails. John uses 15lb braid i believe, i use 20lb.
John Skinner Fishing Actually fished out of Huntington. The first time, not crowded, so bucktailed only. 2nd Trip, crowded and fished in deeper water. I may have been holding bottom, but was continuously got tangled with others. Finally switched to Fluke ball to reduce chances of tangling. Thanks for answering.
Hey john thanks for all the videos it helps my friend and myself alot but with the small mullet jig with the bucktail im having trouble holding bottom do you having any suggestions that can help thank you again
We fish usually in 8 to 20 feet of water the current is usually running at a decent pace. 1/2 TO 3/4 OUNCE BUCKTAIL AND A 1/2 ounce grub lure any suggestions would help and be much appreciated
Any lure recommendations for fishing dune road I'm renting there and I have only caught like 2 bass using clams and none on lures any advice for miring midday and evening

Get the 3/4 to 1 1/2 7 foot heavy tsunami classic rod I own three of them and I also own the Nexus jigging rod definitely a great rod for using heavier bucktails for fluke But I also get away with using a 1 1/2 oz Bucktail and a 3/4 oz teaser on the Nexus 7 foot heavy action jigging Rod in 15 to 40ft of water super nice rod
The rig is, if tied with 30# material. The rod and reel are not. See the links in the description of this ocean fluke video. ruclips.net/video/MtpmfKABXCM/видео.html
Hey John, just a quick question. I'm relatively new to fishing like this. If I wanted to use a more conventional/baitcast setup like that with the reel on top, does it matter what type of rod I buy, or is there a specific type I should invest in? Thanks.
Nick Rossi I would look for a baitcasting rod 6-7 feet that is good with 15-20# braid. It doesn't need to be high end. Just something that handles 3/4-1.5 ounce nicely.

Enjoyed that John. Really good to see the set up and technique you use. I may try this with our UK flatties one day with suitable lures.

Hi John... Would you recommend this same rod/reel setup for black bass as well? How about Black Sea bass jig?

John, great video. just curios how big is the boat your fishing out of in this video?
Hi John, are there any keepers near shore on Long Island? I've been fishing for years and have never got a nice fluke near shore on piers.
John, What size drift sock do you use on your kayak? plan to put your techniques to use this season & wanted to get your size recommendation before buying one. Love your videos & books. Thaks so much.
would 3 oz be overkill for bucktail jigging? usually fish off the coast of sandy hook nj
@john skinner can you create a list of all the items you’re using so we can buy the products for ourselves?
Hi, John I have been using tsunami holo teaser for fluke bucktailing from beach, what's your opinion about using glass minnow for teaser
Hey John I like your videos a lot and I really think you should get a tangle free net. I got one from Walmart for 20 dollars and it is perfect for fluke and it is the best net ever that doesn't ever tangle
How do you hold bottom with just 1 oz. Would you suggest adding a sinker if drift is stronger
Also how are you controlling your drift between 1.5 & 0.5 mph
John, why the 'right' handed retrieving baitcaster as opposed to a more conventional 'left' handed retrieve?
Do you prefer a fast action rod for the drifting?
Fisher, could u record all of your unedited fluke fishing recordings. I find them very interesting to watch.
Can you bait sand eels to catch flounder/fluke?
Will this work for other forms of inshore fishing besides jigging
Any tsunami glass minnow substitutes? Maybe just a gulp mullet?

Can u give some details on your skiff?
Looks like a fluke killer!!!
Thx for the informative videos, much appreciated.

It looks like a 16' Starcraft Mariner, riveted aluminum deep V hull. Great old boats.

Paul Klaynes I look for edges - rises, drops... Also I'm looking for birds above and bait on the fishfinder.
thanks for sharing. Also works in Denmark :-D
What oz glass minnow do you use?
What kind of boat is that? And do you ever use a drift control sock?
Hey John, I was just wondering what kind of boat you are using in this video. I've seen it in some of your other videos as well so I was just wondering. Thanks.
qawsican 1982 16-foot Starcraft

Absolutely. Many nice fluke are caught from the "skinny water" of Long Island's South Shore bays.
Could u put the links of the different gear in the description please
Whats the most weight you can put on that rod?
Hope I meet you some day bro you thought me a lot I just want give you a hug man
Thank you so much for this video! I wonder if this same technique can be used on California halibut in the San Francisco Bay?
100% yes, because so many anglers there have told me it works.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks! We usually use a trolled herring early in the spring until live bait arrives. Live bait has been on fire recently and now I see some fisherman throwing swimbaits as well.
What is the action of the rod you're using?
I'm gonna be trying this method on Chincoteague Island, VA . We are going August 18-23 so I'll report back how this method works there.
Do snapper bluefish work for stripers or fluke? I have tons of them and i only use them for crab traps
They work with fluke not really striped though
what is the action of that rod?
John, love your videos-thank you-what did you use on deck of your boat for (blue) coating? Is that some type of epoxy?
Just porch and deck paint from Ace but it wasn't a great solution.
John, is that a 16’ StarCraft Mariner? Good boat and a classic.
John, how do you deal with 15lb braid from digging into your spool on a bigger fish?
+Jarek Czarnecki You need to spool braid on very tightly when you fill the reel. Then it won't dig.
Is that baitcast reel only for vertical jigging or can you cast with it as well?
+Ron Mehringer I don't use it for casting, but I suppose you could.
What size barrel swivel so the ring guides don't get chipped and is also less visible ,?
Jack Hawley99 I use an 80# or 50# Tsunami Centro or SPRO.

Erik Olson Erik, thanks for the response. Yes, using 15lb braided line with mono leader (or Flourocarbon leader)
is that bucktail you show at 2:50 searobin color from s&s? if so how well do you do with the color?
+Jack Hawley Yes, and it works well, especially when the fish are on crabs and sand fleas and shrimp.
What is the action of your rod?
Hey john thanks for all the videos it helps my friend and myself alot but with the small mullet jig with the bucktail im having trouble holding bottom do you having any suggestions that can help thank you again
Im sorry i was using a curltail grub 4" opaque cht with the small bucktail
How deep, how much current, what weight jig?
We fish usually in 8 to 20 feet of water the current is usually running at a decent pace. 1/2 TO 3/4 OUNCE BUCKTAIL AND A 1/2 ounce grub lure any suggestions would help and be much appreciated
Are you using 15# or less braided line? If so, I think you're looking at 3/4- to 1-ounce bucktails in that environment.
Thank you for your help john can you give me a link so i can purchase them
What is the rod your using
I was reading about the reel you were describing it says that it is a fresh water reel?
Yes, but they hold up fine. I do rinse after trips.
Do u use a ball bearing. Swivel or just a braid to flurocarbon knot?
Jack Hawley99 The braid is connected to the leader with a small barrel swivel.
Great vid as usual, why is it the guys with the oldest beat up boats catch the most fish? lol
I have an 80 k ranger and I won more tournaments out of my 17 ft skeeter I bought for $3500

Can I use smaller bucktails out in Montauk but use a sinker to bring them on the bottom?
What would the rig look like?
Sounds like a chicken rig. Sinker on bottom, one or two teasers above.
Thanks
How far apart do you have the bucktail and the teaser?

How far apart do you have the bucktail in the teaser?

Do you lock the reel once the rig hits the bottom?😊
Yes.
i know they're a by-catch to most in LI, but have you ever thought of making a surf video on "shore fishing for sharks" sandbars and so on.. thanks

What size Tsunami glass minnow do you use?
Joseph Procopio 3/8-ounce
What weight glass minnow do you use?
3/8

I dont see a 7' classic rated for 1/2-1oz listed anywhere
Richard Jankowski
Richard Jankowski amazon 2 for 89.00 classic
The only tsunami classic casting rod I can find is the 7' H. Rated 15-25lb and 1-1 1/2 oz lure.

But I also get away with using a 1 1/2 oz Bucktail and a 3/4 oz teaser on the Nexus 7 foot heavy action jigging Rod in 15 to 40ft of water super nice rod
J&H tackle in New York should have that rod.
Is this setup good for ocean fishing 80 to 90 feet
The rig is, if tied with 30# material. The rod and reel are not. See the links in the description of this ocean fluke video. ruclips.net/video/MtpmfKABXCM/видео.html

What color gulp works the best for you?
I found most of my fluke today with the green one. I was deep sea fishing for fluke in the Atlantic Highlands on the boat Angler in Jersey.
SammyDoesEverything White is my go to, green works great as well.
