So sad, and equally fascinating. This is an aspect of the Whitechapel murders that never crossed my mind.

When I first read about Jack the Ripper, I became so scared that I had to discard the book even though the murders occurred more than a century ago. I can only imagine the terrible impact it had on the general public at that time.

An interesting slant. No wonder the young woman who was followed by the man claiming to be Jack was so troubled by him. A horrible thing to do.

As a native of Northern Ireland, I can say that we definitely have a very dark sense of humour, gallows humour if you will! However, there's nothing funny about what happened to that poor girl or any of the unfortunate passings of the poor souls who had taken their lives due to these horrific murders! That aside, thank you for another fantastic video Mister Jones!!

There are so many angles and effects of this dark period that we don't know or think of.
These little known stories you manage to dig up however tragic are just fascinating. Props for it.
There must of been more going on with some of these cases but hardly surprising the effect the murders had on people. Scary to think of now so you can only imagine the fear and paranoia that raged back then.

It is more extreme than Berkowitz, but a lot of JTR reminds me of Berkowitz. I don't know if many went mad but the fear in the city was palpable. Everyone Brunette and even if not brunette, stayed home at night. A lot of brunettes cut and died their hair.
People then did not know to be angry and distrustful of those papers, not just the cops. If they did people may not have been so quick to off themselves.

Talking about victims. And controversial as this maybe but Jack the Ripper himself to some degree was also a victim. We have no idea how he grew up or what abuse he must have sustained. The Ripper was clearly insane but something led to that insanity. All those killed were victims of society and a nonexistent welfare system as much as a victim of the man with the knife. Great video!!!

@@FlaviusConstantinus306 No one is excusing the Ripper's actions, just trying to think of possible reasons for them. Theres a good chance that the Ripper was deranged and had some trauma in their life and up upbringing to turn out the way they did.

Many types of mental illness would have given rise to paranoia with the way everyone must have been watching each other and gossiping. Add that to the strangeness of empty, quiet streets at night and the natural fear felt even before newspapers heightened it. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't many more breakdowns and committals that never made it to the papers.
Kudos as always Richard. You reminded me that other people's lives were affected in ways I've never thought of. Thanks

Nowadays, the violence that is so prevalent in our society is either seen outright on the News or a simile is watched on TV shows and movies. I think many people are so numb to scenes of violence that MOST sadly wouldn't blink an eye at the post-mortem pics of Jack's victims.

  • @drbigmdftnu

Suicides require a trial and jury verdict? Wow. I've never heard of that before. Once homicide is ruled out, no further inquest is made here in U.S. Is that still standard?
