    Thanks for the video Emilie. My Dad took up both computers and flight sims in his 80s. He didn't even know the keys on his keyboard he was that green. I remember him creating huge manuals in binders, going through checklists, flight plans, interacting with the tower etc. as best he could in FSX. Every day he would make a flight after breakfast for a couple of hours. Sadly he passed away in 2017, still flight simming at 88. He would have been over the moon with this version of MSFlight so it's kind of bittersweet for me. I'll pick it up and do some flying in his memory.

      I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad, I was a mad FS pilot too, so much so I bought every MSFS on the market. I gave it up later because Windows updated and FSX would no longer work on my pc.(And my controller broke). I'm now looking to re-establish all my stuff and carry on flying. I hope you find the same passion as your Dad and realise how relaxing it all can be.
      Please continue his legacy. (hugs and condolences)

      Agreed. For non-pilots like me, just having stuff saying "click this switch" isn't very useful. I want to know *why* I'm clicking the switches. What do they do? Of course, I doubt anyone could really go into detail on it as the videos would be hours long, but it is nice to have just a general idea. Very few of the videos I've seen out there do this.

    Pro-tip that I only learned by accident yesterday: When you're moving a dial (such as the heading dial), you can use the mouse scroll wheel up or down to change it instead of clicking for every degree, as long as your cursor is over the dial. Made my life a lot easier to figure this out!

    Anybody else low key want a q400 to come out for this sim that's 10/10 so Emilie can fly it. Imagine the possibilities haha, proper walk through and a glimpse into what and how you do the checklists upfront. Ill be starting flight school soon and the way you speak through your flight explaining what you're doing is solid, really easy to follow along for any new pilots. But the fact that your smiling through this whole experience shows how much you love what you do! If I can experience that with any instructor then is going to be a really fun time! Thank you for the content really fun watching this. Have an amazing day!

    Since you're a real pilot and you obviously know these things pretty in-depth considering you've gotten to where you are, could you make a few more comments about why each of these checks are made when it's important, the importance of the order they are in, etc. Something that a person like you with a lot of experience would understand. I know a lot of simmers are into it because they can't necessarily afford to do the real thing but still want to learn the technical stuff. Don't have to go too in depth, just a few comments with useful information would be interesting to see. =)

      There are a great many private pilot 'learn to fly books' covering the private pilot syllabus.
      If you are serious about learning the 'in depth' of how to fly an aircraft you should buy and read them.
      They are not all that expensive and that is what 'real' student pilot have to do.
      The instructors give you the practical and brief theory lessons, but you are expected to put some effort in yourself.

    You mentioned it being hard to look around. There is a product called TrackIR 5. It attaches to your headphones and has an infrared sensor that you attach to your monitor. It tracks you head movement and moves the camera in game so you can look around just by moving your head a bit. A lot of us simmers use it for racing/flying games, the immersion is so much higher. Later on ASOBO is adding support for VR which will be even better!

    As a 50+ year real life pilot as well as a 35+ year Flight Sim pilot, I find you refreshing and fun to listen to and watch. 2 suggestions for future videos to help real and sim pilots be the best they can be, are: #1- describe a solid Take-Off briefing... discussing the aspects of the takeoff and emergency procedures associated with each part... on the ground, runway remaining, in the air, in the climb out, etc. #2) discussions of engine failures and how to handle... straight ahead landing or a return to the airport. This is one of the fantastic things about the simulator... I have a reference sheet for over 100 of my favorite aircraft in my 2 present sims (out of the roughly 300+ aircraft and helicopters total in both sims) that list the minimum altitude (agl) and the maximum distance (miles) for each aircraft to be able to return to the airport in the event of a total engine failure. By the way, in some under powered single engine GA aircraft, there is no combination of altitude/distance that works (in takeoff configuration) and you must land straight ahead. It was great fun to test each plane until success was achieved. Yes, I know that engine failures are rare, but in my 50+ years of real life flying, I have encountered 3 complete engine failures... landing in a cow pasture once... on a highway once and one return to the departing airport. A good pilot is always practicing.

    I dunno, Emilie, weren't you right the first time about which hand to use for throttle and yoke? Your instincts sounded right to me, assuming you're in the left seat as PIC. Maybe it's the hardware that's wrong. A lot of the joystick and throttle combos out there seem to be aimed at gamers wanting to fly F15s or shoot lasers at asteroids, rather than practice aviation procedures. I'm planning to buy the Honeycomb yoke and TQ for this reason.
    Great video anyway, I haven't flown for over a decade now so this kind of resource is great for jogging my memory. You remind me of my instructor, she was similarly relaxed and matter-of-fact, with good banter, a deep love of flying and (luckily for me) endless patience!

    Am trying to figure this out myself, I find using button 1 on my joystick, the trigger, give the view to the nearest landmark, when landing that'll be the airfield, giving me a quick check for when I"m at 45 degrees or whatever.
    I feel you pain with the adjustments you need to make. I got FS the first time for my Apple ][ and had a homemade joystick with no self centering. My brother in law was a flight instructor building up his hours so he could work with his dad with Flying Tigers way before they were bought out by Fed Ex. He couldn't fly it at all but he talked me into my first successful landing.
    Neat thing, just before his dad retired they had a chance to fly together as pilots on a 747 international flight.
    Gary lost his seniority after the buyout, ended up flying 727s domestic at the end of his career.

    Great video Emilie, as always. Those who criticize can go to some other "game" youtuber and push the gas and go. Many don't realize the thousands of hours you have flown, learned, and taught and the expense of becoming a CFI. Just the fact that a pilot can use a checklist and not use the highlight focus in the sim proves you know what you are doing. Second, all student pilots should put the throttle and stick/yoke exactly as you find them in the planes you fly. Muscle memory. In a Cessna, yoke in left hand, throttle and switches in the right, except when you are teaching from the right seat in real planes and then all CFIs (Chief Flying Instructor, which Emilie is) learn to fly from the right seat when showing students manouvers. So she can fly right or left handed configurations... for hundreds or thousands of hours. Don't let the criticizers faze you. They are used to games and used to pretending to be authorities on their games.
    Keep up the insightful and entertaining real flying using simulator. My channel, ForderLearnToFly, promotes you and your endeavors all the way. Trust her everyone. We would all be so lucky to have Emilie as our flight instructor in real life. (by the way, got my licence on GNJ, a Cessna 150 out of Toronto Island Airport). Love this place. And don't trust the built-in ATC that sends you over the city... avoided at all costs unless they have to. Around the islands for your circuits and come through the eastern gap for noise avoidance procedures.

I'm 60+ now and have enjoyed a number of feline companions, but none compared to that one... Love your channel and content, keep it up!!!

    Look likes the landing was a 3points one... the nose wheel seems to touch first, which is not very good :)
    Little tips for the knobs : you should be able to scroll over to rotate those buttons, which will much more easier than click multiple times!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for making these videos!!! I like your style, videos like this are invaluable. I'd love to see a video that has tips on better flights, from takeoff, climb out, cruise, descent, and landing. Especially landing. It seems like I'm ok on every other part of the flight, but am all over the place on final approach, and inevitably land next to the runway (but, haven't crashed....yet).
    Keep em coming, and I can't wait until you're able to make video's in the cockpit of the Q400 again!

    Nice video! I've only been to Toronto once, for a layover, at night, so I didn't get to see how beautiful it is! Also, I was thinking... I know you don't consider yourself a gamer, but you're definitely appealing to that crowd when you do the FS2020 videos. :) Given your rapidly growing viewership, have you considered streaming live gameplay? If you take the streamer route, it could be a nice supplement to your income. Plus it'd allow live chat for Q&A, more interaction, etc.

    Wow, you are rather meticulous with your check-list. I'm more of the "Is the plane still there?" check. FIREWALL IT, BILLY!!! While making some sarcastic welcome announcement to my fictitious passengers like "Thank you for flying Air Charlie. Today's route into Seattle-Tacoma is estimated to be 95 minutes, but we think we can do it it 60. I have turned on the "fasten seat-belts" light because the co-pilot has been smashing cocktails of night-quill and Redbull since 5 am and is currently engaged in a shouting match with demons that only he can see, I'm anticipating a dog-fight to commence at any moment. We know you have a choice in air carriers and you chose poorly"

    Ok just starting watching it but I have to comment. Set your damn stick up however you want! The joystick can actually be configured to work on either side. Makes perfect sense why you did that to me. I think just about every commercial plane has the throttle on the right, not the left. So it would make sense that is where you would put it. Only thing I have seen with the throttle on the left is fighter jets. F-16's had the throttle on the left and the stick on the right. Older ones like F-4's and stuff like that ( I was a mechanic on F-4's in the Air Force) have the throttle on the left and stick in the center. And since you fly commercial planes for real I would think your right hand would naturally drop down to the throttles to control them. Just like shifting a car, unless you live in the UK lol. I wouldn't reverse your controls just because some internet trolls get triggered. It isn't your fault the controls were made wrong.

    • @ovatone
      @ovatone 4 года назад +2

      Actually this joystick can't be configured to be on the left. I mean you can use it on the left, but it won't be comfortable, as there will be nothing to rest your wrist on. It was clearly not based on commecrial aircraft controls so it's not 'made wrong'.

    • @stal2k
      @stal2k 4 года назад +1

      @@ovatone The throttle is where you would really get in trouble trying to switch hands lol.. and ya the X-52 is an older HOTAS that is general-purpose so it's not "made wrong." I'm sure if the MSFS content gets traction it'd make sense for her to grab some better gear.

    • @biteme263
      @biteme263 4 года назад

      @@ovatone Hmm I thought sure my x52 came with extra panels to convert it to left hand. However after looking in the box you are correct it can't be swapped. I wonder what stick I was looking at that could be? I know it was one of them I was looking at. I swapped my controls to see how it would feel. Not bad honestly. The stick is fine. Feels good enough and you can hit all the buttons just fine. The throttle is a little strange but usable. And to be honest if I remember correctly that throttle was a pile of crap out of the box. I really wish they wouldn't bother with the contours, hand rests and hand specific button layouts on them. They would work just as well without them and be more universal. The x52 especially seems to be more about looks than function though. Not the best purchase I have ever made. I don't hate it, but for the money I feel it could have been better.

      If you sit in the right seat of a commercial jet the throttle is on the left.

    Hi Emily. I've been interested in learning to fly almost as long as I can remember. I bought FSX a few years ago with the idea of learning, but never got to do it. Today I purchased the new MSFS, and as luck would have it I saw one of your videos. This re-sparked my interest. I just know I can learn a lot from you, a real-life pilot. Now I can hardly wait for my sim! I just need to download it first, then I can start my flying training. Thank you for making this possible for me as a novice. You make it look so easy, but that is obviously because of years of experience. 😉
