    dealing with weight loss struggles has been a constant battle for me. Watching Dr. Doug Lisle on Chef AJ's show shed light on the importance of cleaning our environment from high-fat foods. His insights on cravings being natural responses resonated deeply. It made me realize it's not about personal faults but the challenging modern food environment. Understanding the impact of our food choices on weight and health is crucial. Lisle's emphasis on questioning assumptions and experimenting with our eating habits inspired a fresh perspective on my weight loss journey.

      Exactly. Dr. Lisle has helped me release shame I have felt all my adult life for giving into my cravings despite trying to solve my own problems with weight/cravings/binging. I have cleaned out my kitchen, my husband is on board, and I see clearly now. 👍🥗🥦🥕🍍

    I really can't express how much I appreciate Dr Lisle's analysis. So different from what one hears in the UK (maybe most of the USA too!). So so so so so sick of hearing the "moderation" comment. I've started always sneaking in the "alcoholic" comment when I hear that rubbish. My very best wishes to all - may we long survive to enjoy our conflicted and beautiful world - hugs.

    Having a child on the spectrum is the exact reason WHY I instituted a no junk in the house policy 20 years ago. It’s really bad for our kids. Worse than for typical kids.

    • @mattzilla331
      @mattzilla331 Год назад +8

      That's great. I hate when parents feed their kids ton of junk food. Honestly I think it should be considered child abuse. Just like how giving them tobacco alcohol and drugs would be considered abuse. But most don't even give it a 2nd thought because that's how they themselves eat

    • @greentree_
      @greentree_ 7 месяцев назад

      Parents have the primary responsibility to nourish the growing child as best as possible, it’s part of keeping them safe.
      I think it’s very close to abuse if you give junk food to kids in place of healthy meals. It’s ok to give them processed foods OCCASIONALLY and in addition to the healthy meals. I’d say on the weekends in fine. I feel very guilty if I do otherwise because it clearly is not right. Parents that don’t have this discernment have been brainwashed and desperately need to be educated. We’re creating a very sick generation.
      Luckily, my kids don’t like most of those junk foods anyway, they don’t like cake, chocolate, etc.
      PS: I don’t believe in veganism, but I do believe in eating meat less often, like on weekends. Eggs and fish all week for my kids with some cheese to pack in the calories.

    • @type1veganmama154
      @type1veganmama154 6 месяцев назад

      I think it becomes more difficult when your partner isn't on board... My husband is vegan, but eats processed foods and introduced them to our kids because he felt they deserved to try all the foods... Even though I was against it in the beginning. 2 of our children are on the spectrum and my oldest is the most difficult. I used to have him eating steamed potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and other fruits and veggies... But slowly everything he liked he refused to eat. Mostly due to psychological issues with texture and stuff. He is now 10 and eats exactly 3 foods. None of them healthy... Vegan, but not healthy. The only way I can get nutrition into him is to have him drink smoothies blended with a high powered blender so it's smooth enough that he'll drink it. He drinks about 64 oz of smoothie per day. I put greens, sweet potatoes, peas, and lots of fruit, coconut water, kale, enof powder to get some veggies in and moringa powder. He drinks it every single day for breakfast and dinner and the other unhealthy foods are scattered in like his peanut butter sandwich. The other 2 things are soy flavored top ramen and Mr. Good crisp chips... He doesn't like anything else really, even sweets. I can rarely get him to eat watermelon, banana or rice which he chews each bite for like 10 minutes for some reason... I identify with the struggle some parents have. I have tried to stop ramen or stop chips or stop bread... But then all he has is his smoothie. He literally won't eat anything else for weeks until he starts wasting away (he's already a small kid) so then I cave. We introduce healthy foods constantly and he will now lick them... After going to feeding therapy which was the only advancement we've achieved so far. My other 2 eat the spectrum, especially my youngest who loves everything I do and I have a wide palate. I have trouble not resenting my partner at times that he introduced any of that crap in the first place, but I can only try to solve my current situation and my particular level 2 autistic son makes that very difficult, even with my husband no longer sabotaging my efforts.

    Oh my goodness this was gold! Dr Lisle fired up over the abused rats scenario had me laughing out loud. I personally can't stand Dr Gabor Mate's message. He reduces everything down to childhood trauma. Well guess what Dr Mate, my childhood was loving and stable and my kind caring supportive parents died in their 80's. I was still a binge eater. My husband was a very loving kind caring man who adored me and I still binged. I personally believe it is genetic for me as I recall right from very young being obsessed with food. My parents were normal eaters and food was never in short supply nor were we made to finish our food etc. I never knew my mother to be on a diet so this was not learned behavior. Both my brother and I struggle with food addiction and binge eating in spite of our upbringing. It's got to be genetic surely?

    • @maureenk1635
      @maureenk1635 7 месяцев назад +1

      This is THE TRUTH! It's the environment. I am like this person as far as loving family and lack of trauma in my life. For about the last 5 or 6 years I've switched my died over to WFPB, SOS free, mostly raw, and, as a result, all my health issues have disappeared. Also, as long as I load up on dark, leafy greens (from breakfast through dinner), I no longer have food cravings. If I start having migraines, I know it's because I have been eating too many nuts, dried fruits, dry food, or because I have not been exercising. Friends think my diet is extreme and advocate for moderation, but this works for me. I'm sure Dr. Mate has good intentions, but he is wasting people's time and health. They probably do want and need therapy, but to get rid of health problems they need Dr. Lisle's advice.

My disagreement does not mean I am right or they are wrong. There was a comment below by someone who said that they were going to buy his book until they heard this interview. People's expectations today that they must be exposed only to whet they think is so bad. IMHO....it is what is wrong with today's society. We are weaker as a result. DO NOT CENSOR DR. LISLE. I love Dr. Doug Lisle. He is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I gave this video a thumbs up. But he is wrong about bread. I spent my whole life eating plain bread, especially sourdough. When I was in my 20s and 30's I would buy a whole loaf or large round of sourdough or extra sourdough bread and eat it - the whole thing - for lunch. I hate butter. And I always thought that putting anything on the bread would detract from it's delicious taste and texture. My husband is also the same - in fact he is still happy to take a whole loaf of any bread and eat it plain - for lunch or dinner. We have witnesses. Plain bread by itself - no chaser. We love plain bread- it is delicious all by itself.

    Environment is such a key factor. It is absolutely more challenging, when you have unhealthy food in the house for "other members" of the family. The Treasure Trap was a great book. Regarding the "controversial" part towards the end of this interview, I don't see why it is all or nothing in terms of trauma vs. environment. BOTH things can be true. Yes, trauma can cause many unwanted self "soothing behaviors" (not just around food) AND it is our environment that can help and/or hurt how we process, proceed and react to trauma. I agree with Dr. Lisle that if it is not around, you can't have it! I also believe that if someone is living with trauma they never dealt with, they may continue to live a life that strives to soothe themselves through ways that may be destructive to themselves.

    H freedman: I have a comment about the last question chef AJ read to Dr, Lisle and his response:
    The question was about Dr Gabor Matè’s work with childhood trauma and it wanted to know dr. lisle’s opinion about “Childhood trauma carrying into adulthood?” And Chef AJ added that she “assumed” that the questioner was asking about childhood trauma and food, (which the questioner didn’t seem to have asked.)
    This sent Dr Lisle on a 17 minute unprofessional, angry and gratuitously nasty rant about the ignorance and incompetence of Dr Mate whom he didn’t know and yet referred to him as “Dr Schmo” among other derogatory names and comments. Dr. Lisle owes Dr Matè an apology for his nasty rant which had nothing to do with Dr matès excellent lifetime work with trauma - he is 78 years old and a holocaust survivor. I have lost respect for Dr lisle for his attitude and behavior.

    I think it would be almost better to reframe the last question, which actually was about the relationship between weight gain and childhood trauma.
    However it would be really nice to talk deeply, and extensively in a new episode, and not linked to weight gain or other addictive behaviors, which are all substances/situations that weren’t available in the paleo world!
    ….about how distortions are built in the nervous system, regarded and worked on/ worked with from an evolutionary psychology angle, and how trauma is addressed or thought about ??!!
    And then eventually start exploring if it makes some of us more susceptible/vulnerable to addictions too….
    I’d love that !!!

    By the tittle I thought you were going to talk about hoarders, clutter that kind of clean up your environment. Do you already have a talk like that? Talking about how all that can affect how we eat? State of mind as far as stress & what that does to the body. I never realized how much stress I carry and how that has affected my IBS colitis I had pancreatitis and yes I am not ignoring the fact that my habits were not great. I am improving but stress is ugly.
    Also interested in how it affects people with not only stress but anxiety depression even ptsd. In all that it affects the body. I hear people talk about there are many people that struggle with ptsd. There are so many different things that affect us and throw a wrench in our everyday struggle to be fit. Thank you.

    I used to work with a guy who was 6'4 and stick thin. Painfully thin. He told me he'd been that way his whole life. We worked in a security call center doing 12 hour shifts sitting all day and not allowed to leave the building during the shift. He would eat lots of food all day long, some junk and some healthy stuff. He stayed skinny for a long time but slowly started to gain some weight. Fast forward 3 years on his last day in the job. I was walking behind him and he had a fast ass and was about 40 pounds overweight. If Dr Lisle is right then why would he suddenly become a person who gets fat? Surely his previous skinny genes would have told him to stop overeating. I think Dr Lisle is wrong, and I've seen it many times in my life. People who were skinny in their youth start putting on the weight as they get older or they have a change in their lifestyle. For him the change was being bored and eating and sitting all day long when before he had more activity in his other jobs.

    My personal suggestion to people who cannot stop this or that. I understand you, I am food addict. I landed in my 60s with autoimmune disease thanks to vegan junk food. So, please EDUCATE yourself what it does to your health. Listen to everything about what animal based diet, sugar, junk does to you. If it still doesn’t work and you harm yourself by making yourself knowingly sick, you need psychotherapy or over eaters anonymous, because your problem is sitting very deep in you.

    I really liked this until the last 20 minutes or so when he went off the rails and started making the same sort of “I just know” assumptions about all sorts of things, and after he spent so much time criticizing other doctors for doing this! Was going to buy his book, but prob not now. I’m not a big fan of the psych doctors in this vegan space. I’ll stick with the cardiologists and internists.

    I understand that no matter how fat a person is.... if you change their environment, they will lose weight. But if you look at people over 600 lbs , many of them claim they've been sexually abused as a child. All the time, on the show ' my 600 lb. Life', patients claim this. So what does that mean? Could it be that sexually abused people use food to cope and become extremely obese.... if the food is available?

    The last question and doug Lisle's response mischaracterize gabor mate's work, i believe. Hes said things a bout ptsd and childhood trauma but not that childhood trauma is making us fat. I Don't think Maté has said childhood trauma is the cause of obesity. So the dr schmo rant is funny but sort of off base.
