- A new study is shining light on the amount of sodium Americans eat, and how dangerous it can be for their health. Jackie London, a registered dietitian and Good Housekeeping's nutrition director, joins CBSN with what people can do to cut down on salt.
Cut out all sugar carbs and sodium you will lose weight like crazy. Only eat natural foods and you will be happier and look better.
Easier said than done
But you need sugar and carbs for energy..duh. You need something of everything even if it's a little bit
@@unstablebrother u can’t win for nothing honestly 😂😂😂
@@unstablebrother he said sugar carbs

There’s a difference between healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs. For instance, cashews are a very healthy snack and they have 9g of carbs per serving. The problem people get into, even with foods like that, is they’ll eat 3-4 servings. And still think they’re only consuming 9g of carbs. 🤪
Natural fruit sugars are fine because the fruit contains fiber. BUT, we shouldn’t be consuming cakes, cookies, ice cream, chips, crackers, French fries… things like that.
If I don't eat enough salt I feel like I'm going to die... seriously I need about 4-8 grams a day. I would like to look at this study. It sounds like the salt is correlated but not the cause of the health issues.
Yeah study , cuz korens eat more salt than ppl in the usa and they have less chronic diseases. But idk if im right lol
@@doracir286 I'm arab and i technically eat salt everyday?
because sodium take up half the weight of salt, therefore in this case you're eating 4-5g a day which is right about enough
Salt is good
Salt, sugar, fat and meat are the cause of illness.
How about eat real food, all these boxed and packaged goods are so high in salt and sugar to make them shelf stable.
I don’t worry about salt BECAUSE I eat real food. Non processed junk food.
Hypertension is NOT a silent killer. My father displayed symptoms which are: blurred vision, headaches, and his face would turn read when he’s angry, for crying out loud!
He was lucky he had signs. A lot of people don't until it progresses.
If you're busy af like me and don't have time to buy fresh veggies all the time, frozen veggies are the way to go.
It’s the food manufacturers that are loading our foods with sodium.!!
Omg I had the chicken sandwich meal and just with that it was over 2300 milagrams! After seeing this it has made me more mindful and made me realize I could be eating way over the amount.
there's hidden sodium everywhere. Fishballs, noodles, fast food, processed food, you name it.
MSG contains less sodium by mass, so it's a good alternative to NaCl (normal salt).
If i eat things like fishballs, I will cut them up and soak them first to remove some of the salt
Most active people need a good majority of the salt especially athletes, this study fails to mention activity levels, and fluid intake consumption, all those play a role in how much salt you should be consuming, very active people how consume 1-2 gallons of water per day, need at least 3000-5000mg of salt Per day, half of that will be gone, so your really only left with about 1000-2000mg a day
Whole grains? Fruits? She's just parroting what the American Diabetes Association wants her to say. Big red flag there.
Amazing how you guy’s challenge guidelines when u see sooo many people having high blood pressure, stokes, heart attacks, & deaths all around u but sware that it’s the man trying to control you. I bet u smoke too. That’s not bad either hu.
She's exactly right I was just eating a high sodium meal and my body felt like it was about to pass out and I fell to the floor and I remember I did have some electrolytes earlier
Your anecdotal statement means nothing 😂
Is this because the standard American diet makes the body hold onto sodium? Too much carbs means you are easily holding onto sodium.
Great interview! Jackie London gives specific, actionable advice that anybody can follow. I also love the fact that she doesn't push any product -- just good old fashioned fruits & veg, and beans & whole grains. 😁👍
Yeah she also is sexy asf she could get it
@Damian A Thats my fault I was facing my demons that day
Radiation iodine
switch to himalayian pink salt it is balance in minerals
Lennox Beharry. Salt is salt. Himalayan has more other minerals, but it is mostly salt.
@@mikemead2315 and most importantly no micro-plastics
"140mg or less. 480mg thats way too high" commented for self future reference 🤝
A young Bruce Lee's advice on diets was, "try to avoid foods that can be handed to you thru the car window".
i put less than 1000mg of salt in my daily cooking, but not sure if my mesurement is very precise.
There has been a drastic change in my BP, bloating etc since ive been monitoring my sodium intake for just 3 weeks! It's normal now. I cut out processed foods like cheese, deli meat , frozen appetizers and meals. Most importantly I stopped eating out. I cook everything now. Buy frozen veggies and fruit. It's ridiculous how much sodium Americans take in not knowing it. Luckily I was able to shift my health in right direction while I'm still young.
That's not because of salt that is because you have changed your entire lifestyle and I'm guessing lost weight too. Salt is bad we need it and our kidneys (if functioning properly) excrete any extra the following day
Salt is much needed
Restaurant food and fast food are the real problem. Texas Roadhouse is the WORST for sodium that I have found. Most STARTERS have 5000mg of sodium. That's close to 4 days of recommended sodium. Restaurant food is the problem. This is why people are so fat.
how on earth do you "measure" salt? i can take 10 minutes to say "1 more grain", "one less". it's kinda impossible to figure the quantity you eat, especially if some food already is salted on store.
your foods label tells you how much salt is in it, you’ll find it under the name “sodium” 😂
@@donpapi2141 iwas tlking about the salt that you put manually 😜
Most restaurant food in general is processed, unless they state otherwise.
Every time I eat out at a restaurant I get sick or just feel terrible afterwards. Now, I only eat out when invited and often I eat nothing when I go, unless I can add a steak to someone else’s meal.
That’s y I don’t go out to eat. Imagine how much sodium at arrives at the restaurant & then they pile on their seasoning. A pyramid of unhealthy junk. Let alone pep talking over ur food w spite flying out of their mouth & dealing w their phones & food.
salt in highly-processed fastfood is not the problem.... it's the HIGHLY-PROCESSED FASTFOOD!
Interesting. Thank you
How about regulating this at the source!!!
What if I want more calories and less sodium and more protein?
there's hidden sodium everywhere. Fishballs, noodles, fast food, processed food, you name it.
MSG contains less sodium by mass, so it's a good alternative to NaCl (normal salt).

I'm here in my room chowing down on some cheezits not even slowing down.
Same thing makes u laugh, makes u cry. Remember that!!
Nope, not at all. I'm actually a Hyponatremic. Need all that salt I can get.
Sodium restriction equates to a 1% reduction in BP, while ingesting more potassium (veggies) is a 5-10% reduction in BP. Also NEWS FLASH ... high carbohydrate diets actually retain fluids and increase blood volume and blood pressure. Drop the carbs and eat your veggies and please DON'T cut back on the most essential nutrient (electrolyte) in the human body ... sodium. The sweet spot for the least all cause mortality is around 3500mg sodium or 1.5tsp. Lower that 2,300mg is worse than higher. Hypertension ... GONE. Also stop diluting the sodium in your body with overhydration. There's a "little" thing called thirst that's been programmed into the operating system of the Human body and it's primarily there to get us to drink water to dilute excess (primarily) sodium in our blood.
Dang and I thought in a coke can or bottle a 150 mg was a lot times 2, or 3
I eat alot of tacos.
Pink tacos?
Literally watching this rn to try to convince myself not to get tacos 😂
🙁 I eat a really clean diet, have low bp, and have to add salt to my diet, and... it sucks. Never eat out of bags and boxes, it's not good for you.
What about low blood pressure
Sodium is essential for life a human male needs about 5-8g of salt per day, more like 9-12g if you're active. That's about 3600mg to 4800mg sodium per day.
Hey look,
Another salesmen
touting a book,
based on yet another one off study about sodium intake,
Which only concludes that
those with a junk food diet have poor health.
Duh....
Eating too much sodium is probably a bad idea.
,nevermind your diet consisting exclusively of processed meats, processed grains and weird additives.
that is why i have switched to msg (accent) instead of salt
Oh no
Bruh I’m sure people eat 5k+ sodium nobody dying
if I don't eat a significant amount of sodium I will definitely die because this is a bunch of horsesh!t, my body excretes sodium just a little bit faster and I'll have heart problems if I DON'T eat a bunch of it
Everybody is dying we are born that way so your statement is false. Excess sodium speeds it up.
I disagree. I eat a meat based diet with plenty of sea salt for over two years now. I lost 50 pounds, lost my chronic pain, no longer pre diabetic, improved cognitive function, reduced my blood pressure, became able to exercise daily and increased my cardio fitness to the highest levels of my entire life. At age 52 I feel younger and stronger than ever.
Ever since the FDA was formed we have seen a rise in obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a plethora of other chronic diseases. Why do we continue to follow their poisonous advice?
Sooo who’s advice are you taking? & who should we? U addressed what u feel is a problem & offered ZERO SOLUTIONS. As well please provide an update on your health.
@@TREK1305 As I mentioned in my original post the “SOLUTION” is found in what we eat. I recommend going online and doing some research on zero carb diets (aka carnivore). Even Harvard has recently done a study that show the immense benefits of such a diet. I have been eating a meat only diet for over three years and my health has never been better. I will be 54 in a few weeks and I am in the best cardio health of my life. Many of my friends and family that are beginning to adopt this new lifestyle are seeing the benefits as well. The only time I feel unwell these days is if I have a cheat meal and allow myself some carbs. That is when I experience a relapse in autoimmune disorders, inflammation and pain which is why I eventually ended up living a carnivore lifestyle.
@@YHWHsCrusader good info.
@@TREK1305 Best wishes on your health journey my friend!
@@YHWHsCrusader u as well sir.
study also says 3.4g sodium is optimal
which is about 8.5 GRAMS of Sea Salt, by the way (salt yields about 40% actual sodium)
