hiramhorwitz - Today, I'm nostalgic about the 115th anniversary of Larry Fine's birth, after having just celebrated my dad's 95th birthday this past Tuesday.
Forty-four and a half years ago, in April 1973, when Larry Fine was 70 years old and living in the Motion Picture Home, my dad (who was then 50) arrived in Los Angeles on a business trip, and ventured to Woodland Hills to visit Mr. Fine. Back then, very little information was available about the surviving Stooges, as it was a time following the active years of the Three Stooges - but a time before Stroke of Luck, Moe Howard and the Three Stooges, and the dozens of other literary publications tracking the famous trio's history. And it was a time decades before the advent of easy internet access.
Just prior to my dad’s trip, I had learned that Fine was living at the Motion Picture Home and had written him a letter. When Fine answered my letter, I was enthusiastic and surprised - so much so that I couldn’t help wondering if a visit to Fine was a possibility. When my dad told me he’d be traveling to LA, I had to ask if there was any possibility he could try to see Larry. My dad’s response was firm - he would attempt a visit as long as I sent Fine a letter informing him of my dad’s potential visit, and assuming that my dad’s business schedule allowed such a visit.
My next question to my dad was whether he’d be willing to ask Larry a series of questions and record Larry’s responses. My dad would not commit to doing so, but told me to give him a list of questions and a compact tape recorder, in the event that things worked out to do so.
My questions were trivial - nothing deep - ones that were crafted by a fifteen year old fan with minimal insight and minimal knowledge. But to this fifteen year old, the questions were important ones that needed to be answered.
As some of you know, my dad did see Larry during that trip and he did record Larry’s responses to the sophomoric questions I had prepared. What a revelation this was! This April 1973 visit led to an April 1974 visit where my dad and I both spent an afternoon with Fine, and enabled separate visits with Moe Howard, Joe Besser, and Joe DeRita.
In honor of this 115th anniversary of Larry Fine’s birth, and in honor of my dad’s 95th birthday this past week, I am attaching the following three items to this post:
    moronika.com/f...
Long live the Stooges, and long live my dad!

Every time Larry entered a room his line would be, "reminds me of the reform school." When Curly had his stroke back in 1946, it was Larry's idea for the other Stooges to donate 1/3 of their paychecks to Curly, what a magnificent man !

It was around this time, somewhere between '72 and '74, when Larry Fine came to my Junior High School to speak at an assembly to all the students that could fit in the General Purpose Hall, as it was known. There were clips of The Three Stooges shown on a screen (to roars of laughter from us students), and Larry talked about their career and answered questions from the kids. The one I remember- and similar to one asked here in this interview- was how real the hitting, slapping, punching etc was when they were filming. Larry answered, "What you see is what we got!" He was very friendly and a number of us were able to go up to meet him briefly at the end. He was a true gentleman.

It goes to show how soft-spoken this man was. Larry Fine was genuine, a beautiful person, and full of class just like his other comical Three Stooges buddies. I believe that without this man, the Three Stooges would still be very funny, but they wouldn't have that extra "Textbook Larry" image among them. The thought of dying of laughter was an actuality with the Three Stooges, and Larry set the tone with his own antics that made us all laugh really hard, and he literally portrayed in the scope of being the "middle-man" of the classical "Slapstick Mayhem". I dearly miss Larry, and the other Stooges. There will never be another of Larry's like, and the same would be said with Moe, Shemp, and of course, Curly. Joe Derita, and Joe Vesser were funny themselves, but not like all these other men.

Larry was so funny. I found myself laughing at him almost as much as the Howard brothers in the short films. In the episode “Flatfoot Stooges” where they are fireman, I still laugh everytime Moe says to Curley at the end of the episode after the guy they were after gets away “and just think, I was just about to let him have it like this” and he slaps Curly. Larry then says “I wasn’t looking, like what?” and Moe slaps him too. For some reason I laugh at that every time. 😂

Mr. Sweeney wrote about meeting Larry Fine once or twice at the home and setting up his tv to receive a UHF channel in LA that carried 3 Stooges shorts, and he said that Mr. Fine was very grateful that he could then see his old shorts. @@grouchosays Sad that such a legendary funny man was not living more comfortably in his final years. ☹
In Hollywood, the first cable television system was installed in 1965, and by 1973, there were several cable television systems operating in the area. These systems offered a variety of channels, including local channels, national channels, and specialized channels such as sports channels and movie channels.
According to a 1973 survey by the National Cable Television Association, about 10% of households in the United States had cable television. In Hollywood, the penetration rate was likely higher, as the area was home to many entertainment industry professionals who were early adopters of new technologies.
Cable television had a significant impact on the television industry in the 1970s. It offered viewers more channels to choose from, and it also allowed cable providers to offer specialized channels that were not available on broadcast television. This led to a decline in the popularity of broadcast television in the 1970s, as viewers began to switch to cable television.

I always called Larry “The Adopted Stooge”. As far as i was concerned there were only 4 original Stooges. I do NOT count Joe Besser and Joe DeRita as originals NOPE sorry. There were only the 3 Howard Brothers, Moe, Shemp and Curly, and thier adopted brother …Larry. ❤️

Why did he keep bringing up pies? Their comedy was so much more than pies.

Matheus: Your story about your father and Larry, and of course the other visits with Moe and the Joe's is so wonderful and amazing.

Larry talking about Tastykake is great - I knew he was born in Philly but his ties remained.
