6 Final Fantasy 7 Remake Combat Tips You Need To Know

- Final Fantasy 7 Remake reinvents the combat systems of the 1997 original. Instead of a turn-based, menu-filled approach to fights, FF7 Remake goes the action-RPG route, allowing you to run around the battlefield, dodge blows, block incoming attacks, and unleash your own combos. But in addition to familiar hack-and-slash gameplay, the remake also mixes in elements of the original, allowing you to cast spells, give your teammates menu-based orders, or take direct control of other members of your party at any time.
The result is a combat system that's a mix of twitch attacks and strategic planning, where each character has unique abilities and actions, and using your whole party together is the only way to be effective. FF7 Remake will throw some tough battles at you throughout the game, including some intense, multi-stage boss fights that will require all of your skills to make you through. We've compiled a series of tips to help you excel at Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat and claim victory against anything the game throws your way.
Check out the video above, which will help you use each character effectively, outfit your squad, and tackle any situation.

The combat and materia are so deep. I've watched like 4 of these kinds of videos and have learned something new each time.
Yet still some fans complain that the original turn-based battle system of the claseic FF7 is more strategic and deeper than this one. *rolls eyes
Paolo Ibayan They’re the same oldheads who complained of REmake not being in fixed camera angles.
@@paoloibayan7055 The old system is great, but the only way I see someone choosing it over this new one is if they REALLY prefer turn-based combat.
I’m so bad at combat in this game. I can’t for the life of me get the timing right for blocking and dodging. I try to read the enemies moves but everything is happening so fast and it’s all so chaotic.
I know how you feel. I playing this game right now, and never was so bad at an action game. I played all NioHs, KH and Soulsbourne Games and never had issues with them. But here. I don´t get the hang out of this one.
Yeah man, I hear you, I don't think it's your fault tho. The lock on goes crazy when fighting more than 1 enemy, even if you choose to lock it in. Even if I choose 1 enemy to stay locked onto, it never stays . So I'm always attacking random enemies that run past me and never the guy I want to attack. Makes getting parries, counters, staggers all the more difficult
That's because it's not a pure action game.
@@darc5494 wow I did not know that's even a thing ! No wonder I can never keep it locked on to one enemy, I guess default has it that the lock on changes if you move the camera. NOT having the lock on switch when you move the camera will make it easier to stay locked on to one enemy. Thanks for the tip, I will have to try that
@@darc5494 yeah when you hold attack in punisher, cloud does this downward slash which gives him berserk for like 15 seconds. I also only found that out while watching a speedrun.
That tip you gave me I've never heard of before so thank you, that should make a huge Difference. That was my biggest gripe with the combat, that the lock on seems yo jump around too much. Now it all makes sense. i guess they had it where moving the camera also moves the lock on
Apparently if you swap from operator to punisher with triangle at the right time when you're attacked, you also parry. So that's cool..
One of my favorite things to do w Cloud. It's so satisfying when it works!
I assume this doesn't work when changing from Punisher to Operator mode am I right?
That finishing move at the end: Gorgeous!!
Perfection
These are actually really really good tips
cool tips for combos, but sadly doesn't metion the settings.
some tips
1- set the combo settings to free: Changing it to "free" allows you to change targets during the combo using the left stick. This allows you to more easily attack a group of enemies.
2- set battle camera distance to 3: this solves most problems with the camera allowing you to see the attack text from the enemies and boss before the attack animations Begin.
3- change target Lock change to directional buttons: this allows to rotate the camera when Lock on ,without Changing the target
Changing lock target to directional buttons disables being able to change targets during the attack menu, so I don't prefer it.
@@Axl21 how? when in the menu the enemies appear on the list by name, even the bosses parts
@@johnathanjhonson4262 Oh I didn't think of that. I always selected the enemies before choosing a skill.
Thanks. Number 3 helped. Trying to move camera to see but it changes targets also. Grrrrrr
Omg thank you, this makes things much better
Combat is so good in this game that it should be a crime.
I didn't even know about Aerith's deadly dodge attack!
Learning this blew. My. Mind.
KrazyBean14 what dodge attack?
KrazyBean14 oh nevermind it’s just The dodge material equipped. You can put that on anyone
@@nicholasnajibi3082 you dont attack multiple target with everyoone
@@rorozoro9703 with cloud you can get multiple people if they're already close to each other. Doesn't seem that useful... until you combine it with HP absorption materia. Provides just enough hp to act as a decent self sustain in fights against mobs
Now these are sick moves I never thought possible. Thanks for the info! 💪
finally a really good video, that isnt click bait. bro thats aweosme
What a great combat system it is! :) It was worth waiting for this game!!!
This is the best combat system Final Fantasy has ever put out. I hope that Final Fantasy XVI continues to build on this (with some of its own take of course)
I wish they could hasten the ATB bars of the other members and there is a switch function during battle.
@@paoloibayan7055 You could caste Haste to achieve that :) Time + Magnify materia means everyone gets haste. I usually caste haste on all party members as soon as I get 1 ATB bar.
Thiên Phúc Nguyễn Đình you must not have payed the original ff7. It was a MUCH better battle system. I like the new one but it’s nothing compared to the original you have much more freedom and much more customization and they were much less rules in combat.
@@rainZSlayer yup I'm doing that. But the other members ATB are still slower than the leader's :) because blocking without an attack from the enemy connecting on it halts the ATB
Nicholas Najibi That is the nostalgia talking my friend because literally the entire old combat system is in Remake, you just have all this cool shit you can do while your ATB fills instead of the characters just standing there. You still have all the different attacks, they just called Abilities now. You can still equip any character with any materia. If anything it’s an improvement over the old system as back then there was really little-to-no difference between the characters since all that mattered was their materia set up & their Limit Break. Now every character is unique in battle while still being just as customizable via materia, and it all looks flashy af.
I cant figure out when to evade for the life of me, im getting hit 95% of the time when it looks like i should be out of the way
Because u can't evade the dodge but doesn't have invisibility frames like majority of games that have dodge mechanics it's stupid.
I will definitely use some of this. Awesome video by the way
I just realized I play so bad that I don't understand what were he taking about.
I have the same feeling, but to be honest I don't think it's completely us; the video is just quite chaotic and unclear. Especially the first two actions don't even explain HOW to actually do them.
Now only I know how deep the rabbit hole is...great tips!
Awesome Final Fantasy VII Remake Video.
Amazing! Thank you!
Pro Tips :
1. Use Tifa
Very nice tips actually!
Now imagine, this battle system in an open world. Soooooo good!!!. can't wait for the part 2
Are they confirmed that part 2 will be open world?
@@karonain9743 it nist likely wont be. open areas, but not open world is my bet
Maybe, just maybe. Its gonna be like FFXV map but with better development
Open world is meh
Wow, a "things you need to know" type video that actually tells me stuff I didn't know. Sweet!
*this combat system is unbelievable*
Mega0003000 here we go. Time to overrate the battle system when it’s just been copied and pasted from Final Fantasy 13. Here comes the fan boys claiming this is the greatest thing in the world. You can tell these guys never played the original if they think that. 🤦♂️
@@nicholasnajibi3082 OG ff7 combat system is meh,, too easy for me
I played almost all final fantasy game (ff7,ff8,ff9,ff10,ffXI,FF13,FF13LR,FF15,FF7remake)
Imo,The best battle system is FF7remake
How do you queue multiple attacks?
The video such genius engineering it has skylight of blue.
Good video
my default mode is punisher mode and cant get it to set to operator. Please help.
I don't understand, how is he doing back to back parries?
from the clip at 0:35, he first uses the parry from punisher mode (by guarding in punisher mode), then he uses the 'counterparry' ability thingy obtained from twin stinger, and lastly he uses the parry from 'parry' materia (the animation where cloud summersaults backwards) . due to the boss attacking in very short intervals (his spinning blade thingy), its possible for him to activate all of the parries in quick succession. if i am not mistaken that is.
Is that multihit counterstance learned from a weapon?
wow this is all good tips, i have one, but its actually just a small thing,, hope it could help though, if your stuck in a corner or in a wall, and the camera is messed up, use tactical mode to reposition the camera,,
How do you even use this tactical mode?
All I wanted to do was play Final Fantasy 7 instead I got Street Fighter...
I need to have this in super slow motion to see what and when he push the different skills dam its so fast to learn anything
Tifa unbridled strength stacks twice, so use it and then use it again!
I didn't understand the cloud part at 0:54, switching stances then what?
on final hit of clouds attack string quickly hit triangle to switch stances then keep attacking
I usually don’t play fantastical games but this game has my full attention . Even though I played the first few when I was like 9-10 . So I’ve been catching up on my FF story lines .I’m depressed I have to work 🥺. I want to jump back into the story Now . But nope I’m an essential Guinea pig🤔
Wow, that deadly dodge for aerith is a must have O.O
Great video. Didnt know about Aerith showering the enemies with homing shots. I've got work to do lol
Tips for Hollow
This game’s combat is a mix of Kingdom Hearts,FF12,FF15,every Hack n slash game,Lightning Returns & Crisis Core
Cause you can guard against the enemy’s attacks like in LR & CC
You will always have to hammer the attack button like in KH,every hack n slash game,LR,FF12,FF15 & CC
How do you double parry?
Skill you pick up from one of clouds swords. Can't remember the skills name.... Pretty much allows you to party at anytime when used. It has a fast activation and about a 3 sec idle time to counter.
Could counter anything, pair that with your punisher counter and you could chain counter.
FFVII Remake combat is the best combat of any 3D Square game, and probably one of if not the best ARPG combat systems ever. It’s damn near perfect. These are all great tips.
Agree x100. Man, opening the command menu during boss fights and seeing those bullets flying slowmo and your characters frowning while they slowly hitting the enemy are a treat to the eye. Hope there'a an option to make it coloured and not in black and white though.
Ok but show me how to do it and what buttons to press at the exact time that’d be more helpful
I am so happy that they released the FF7 Remake in the USA. Many hours did I spend with the original, and this is even better :D Now if I could just get an official Star Ocean: The Second Story Remake in English I would be VERY VERY VERY HAPPY. FF7, as awesome as it is "both versions", is still a slight second to my favorite JRPGs when compared to SO:TSS IMHO.
The covering of the video covering of the video of movies.
would love this game to get a 60fps patch it would push it seriously to the next level an maybe a resolution patch 😍
Igns game tips < tips from the homeless guy down the street < gamespot tips
Very informative but I gotta say it. Shouldn't there have been 7 combat tips?
This combat system will join the likes of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Persona 5, OG FF7 & FF 10, Kingsom Hearts 2, and Nioh as one of the best combat systems ever designed in a videogame, definitely top 5 amongst RPG's at least (I know most of the games mentioned are action games and this games isn't truly an action game but it just so happens that most of the best combat systems are action games).
R2 L2 also command ally
❤
I get the feeling this is what they wanted ff15s combat to be but fell short on many levels. I myself enjoyed ff15 for the most part but plenty of people I know couldn't get into its clunky, delayed combat.
shit wish i know this before i completed the game.
i love the combat in this game. so many cool things i didn't know in this video! people who say this combat is terrible just have no idea what they're talking about
I just can't believe that final fantasy 7 remake is on par with devil may cry 5 combat
3rd
FF7 REMAKE Is one of the best mechanics in gameplay it has better gameplay the any other game. Also ff7 party is like justice league
Cloud heavy hitter = Superman
Tifa also heavy hitter = wonderwoman
Barrer supporr = Cyborg
Aerith = martian manhunter
Fantastic video!🖤Love It! let's build each other up:)
I was looking for exactly this information: "Instead of a turn-based , menu-filled approah to fights. Ff7 remake goes the action-rpg route, allowing..." I dont even need to watch the video after reading this. ->> Srry not interested in games like this.
These are actual tips at least ,not just common sense stuff
And for everything else .... There's MasterCard
Normal difficulty is so hard in this game. I beat Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Nioh, but sometimes I die faster in FF7 remake in normal mode. The normal difficulty is very unbalanced in my opinion. The combat is very chaotic.
I hate the combat system on this game. I've played it for an hour and hate it. I doubt I'll play it again. load of shite
Really? You guys couldn't come up with 7 tips for Final Fantasy VII? Talk about a missed opportunity.
Really bad fighting system
This is practically all common sense stuff from playing
Didn't knew that parry's can be stacked. Not all players are omnipotent tho.
Paolo Ibayan literally says it in the description. Just gotta know how to read
@@Kamedouken nope
