For those who might think it is easy to negate Mugabi's power by pushing him back like this neither Curtis Parker or Frank Fletcher could do this. Mugabi destroyed them. Green fought a brilliant fight and showed great skill and toughness even in defeat.
As I’ve said elsewhere over the years, this fight was over in the third round. Anyone other than Joe Cortez would’ve stopped this one. THIS was the fight that exposed Mugabi. Hard Rock was one of my favorite middleweights back in the day, and he ALWAYS came to fight!
HR Green was NEVER an EZ fight for anyone! Would've loved to have seen him go up and fight MW's such as Curtis Parker. What a war that would've been, neither wanting to take a step backyards, LOL.
The Beast didn't move his head, so he was EZer to hit than the constantly bobbing & weaving Green. That's why those haymakers from Beast in the 3rd round missed by a mile. That's how all those shorter Philly & NJ fighters fought back then.
@@bflo1000 That WOULD have been a good fight…a war that would’ve gone the distance unless somebody got cut. Hard rock had some hard luck…this fight and especially his fight with Frank “The Animal” Fletcher. He was rockin’ off on the Animal until he got cut and the blood ran in his eye. Hard Rock would’ve even given Hagler a tough fight!
@@Odawg96 Yeah, HR dominated Fletcher the 1st few rounds, but panicked when Fletcher opened up a bad cut over his eye. Parker was another one of those "Toughest guys who never fought for the Title". They had the same style and it would have been another Animal vs HR kind of war.
I’d say Sugar Ray Leonard did considering he won. As a Hagler fan from Boston I can honestly say that decision could’ve gone either way. I think Hagler won but it was close enough to be justified.
@@davidmclachlan6592 yeah but it was a 12 round fight dude. In my opinion the fight was exciting to watch and therefore a success so it doesn’t bother me that he wasn’t given the W. It wasn’t the first time he wasn’t a victim of the politics in boxing.
Mugabi's power was legendary and was incredibly dangerous and feared. Not to mention underrated as hell. Hardrock green was one of the toughest bastards I've ever seen I don't even think Mickey ward could've took mugabi's overhand right over and over as good as he did. I think as a welterweight or super lightweight Hardrock green would've been an all time great
I definitely think John's best route at a world title would have been Tommy hearns. Both could punch like mules and had stamina issues, but the 1980s mugabi i think would have defeated hearns!! Unfortunately he got Marvin who was simply immovable and one of the best boxers of all time!! He put up a great fight tho, Also hard rock green a very very tough man! Both always in entertaining fights! Proper boxing the way it should be 🥊
Lou Duva should never have been allowed to work a corner. He was incompetent. Green was an exceptional fighter who should have competed as a welterweight. He may have been a champion.
Hearns chin couldn't take Mugabi he was in his prime and hungry then by the time he fought Hagler he had experience and didn't quit but didn't apply himself. They wouldn't fight him. They ran from him.He boxed Hagler with his skills But didn't have his power together.Hagler was the only one that would fight him .
Mickey Duff is correct that Hearns ducked Mugabi. Emanuel Steward was not going to risk Hagler payday with a bout vs Mugabi. From a business sense, that is fine, but it disqualifies Hearns from being in consideration for all time great. In my view, Mugabi would have stopped Hearns. It's possible Green would have beaten Hearns as well.
If every non-champion was disqualified from being an all time great based on not fighting another scary contender before fighting the champ, there'd be like 4 guys in the hall of fame. And it's not easy to portray someone as taking the safe route as they're fixing to take on Marvin Hagler.

You're right. Mugabi had no inside fighting skills. Strange how they didn't try to improve Mugabi in that area after this fight.

Mugabi was a devastating puncher, but his stamina wasn't great. He gave Hagler all he could handle. Never a dull fight with Mugabi!
Wow they both had chins, but if Mugabi would of fought Hearns I strongly believe that the hitman would of shot down the beast.
John Mugabi gave Marvin Hagler his toughest ever fight.

This was a great fight. On channel 4 two warrior Boxing was so much better back then
Mugabi was a great ticket seller in Tampa. Probably the best ticket seller the town has ever seen.
My daddy sold theater tickets he was tampas biggest seller

Always.
Green had a good career despite not fighting for a world title!

I call Mugabi's power the "touch of death" -- only great chins can take it.
Mismatch, How much did they both weigh at fight time? John was fabulously great. Green gave Mugabi all he could handle.
I don't get the ref . Why didn't he bring the doctor ? He probably would have stopped it
Great fight 🥊

What a fight!!!
Mugabi and Hearns would have been interesting. I favor the Hitman, but his chin would have been a liability.

Brilliant fight John Mugabe reminds me of a middle light middle of Larry Holmes
Mugabe is an excellent fighter, YES, but to compare him to an ALL-TIME legend and champ for almost a decade is quite cavalier.
I do not see that comparison at all. Holmes was a master boxer with a first rate jab. Mugabi was a slugger who barely used the jab.
Mickey Duff calling out Hearns LOL
yah Tommy would kill the "Beast" easily
we were robbed of mugabi vs hearns .. that woulda been a real shoot out

joe cortez should have been admonished for the 3rd round ..it was damn near attempted murder ..holy crap
Green was a pit bull, but lacked technique.
But his bob and weave was brilliant
Green would of won if if if it wasn't for the cut eye
