Eternal was one of the first bands I followed as a young girl. I remember finally getting their first album for Christmas and dancing around the bedroom ❤
grew up with them. their first album is my favourite. ‘so good’ is my favourite song 💜 they paved the way for girl groups in the uk. wish they were recognised more for that today..
I’m just an American who remembers “Stay” (oddly I remember this 1st verse) but I don’t remember Eternal, let alone that they were from the UK. Boy did we miss out on some great music. Thanks for making your videos. Makes me want to be a British Black kid in the 90s and 00s❤
Same. I remember "Stay" and the remix version. But that was it. That was the only hit they had over here. I saw them on an interview and that's how I found out they were from the UK.
Me as well. I think "Stay" was the only single released in the US for some reason. My mom bought me their album off of that single when I was in elementary school. After that, they completely dissapeared off the American market.
I really miss them ! It's funny now looking back to the 90's we were spoilt for R&B/New Jack Girl Groups wasn't we ? By their second album my attention to them wained a bit just because Thier was so much other stuff around to listen to & I kinda regret that now . Thier first album is still amazing & if anyone is looking for a copy (in the UK) pop into any of the charity shops in a town centre & you should find one for less that an a £1 & quite of few of Thier CD singles as well ! Like I say I miss them ...when I see new girl groups now like "FLO" it brings back memories of them . Thanks again for another great video , much love !
This is an excellent mini documentary. Thank you for bringing back so many wonderful memories of my teens and filling me in on all the juicy details that I missed since. Who knew there was so much drama involved!
I’m American, so I never heard of them until recently when I learned that they originally sang Monica’s song Angel Of Mine. I had no idea they were so massively successful. Some of their songs sound really good and they can really sing. I’m going to check them out
Very talented group of girls. Esther in particular was world-class imo. The amount of times I confused her for Whitney and Mariah - insane vocals! ❤ ‘I wanna be the only one’ is still on heavy rotation on my Spotify to this day!
Thank you for making this - I used to love Eternal in the '90's and always wondered what happened ... They made some great records and I hope they reunite for a tour I would love to see them live.
Still today eternal are the most underrated gg ever from the uk -I’ve been a fan since 1993 , first album bough from Woolworths lol always and forever - for me if she breaks your heart and how many tears are my all time favs should have been released as singles -thank u for this ❤
Thank you so much for your efforts in making this informative video about eternal I was a massive fan and still play there music even today. Thank you 💕😊
I love this group Eternal, growing up it was some of the songs we heard both on TV and radio. Right now just rediscovered their song “ It will never end “… I remember we used to sing along with my childhood friend, Lucia. I shared the song to her for old time sake, a few weeks later she lost her husband 😢. Now when I listen to it, just feels sad, but peaceful at the same time. Yeah, South Africans definitely love a lot of RnB ❤
I was at law school with Vernie, in Wolverhampton and she was very quiet. She used to sit with a baseball cap pulled right down. One day she stopped attending lectures. The rest was history!
This is certainly bringing back a lot of good memories. I'm one their biggest fans. I owned every of their albums including the last one with Ester and Vernie. I was very sad when they split up.
Damn! These ladies were phenomenal singers! They should have been bigger. I hate American radio for not spotlighting them more. I feel like I missed out on an experience that would have added to the soundtrack of my young adulthood like the other R&B groups-some who didn't even come close to Eternal's talent.
Absolutely brilliantly put together totally enjoyed this great work thanks 👍🏻 loved Eternal still play them now such a shame they didn't continue or reunite
I remember Eternal well. When i was a young teenager around 1994-96, they were famous in the UK. They used to be all over the Smash Hits poll winners show, which was a huge awards ceremony at the time. Gradually Louise became a huge sex symbol in the UK and left the group to go solo and married a famous athlete in the UK at the time. Louise had 1 song that i particularly remember called Naked and then she retired from performing. Once Louise left, Eternal possibly had their biggest hit and then weirdly they seemed to disappear overnight. Eternal reunited, minus Louise for a reality show about 10 years ago. I remember Louise saying she wasn't invited and the rest of the girls being shocked as they assumed she wasnt interested as she basically had turmed her back on them since leaving and didnt speak to them anymore. I dont think they parted on good terms. The 2 sisters have jobs whilst Kelly appears on Loose Women occasionally
I never heard of them. Wow. Your channel name is similar to the great story teller on RUclips who does similar content, "Ashleysayso", who's been on the seen for a few years now. Much success to you in the future. Oh snap, I went back and listened more and actually remember that song "Stay", being played on the radio here in America, back in the 90's!
I think if they could have just put their egos aside they could have been a band that would still be here today! Music industry today is EXTREMELY DARK😮
Stay were a really classy group. Some fantastic tracks. But the infighting between the sisters and the other girls just made them implode. They self sabotaged!
They started of during the twilight of the New jack swing era, then ventured into other styles of music. When people look back on the era,Eternal will remain one of the groups that participated in that sub genre of music that drove fans crazy in the early 90s.
There is a HUGE part of Eternal's beginning missing from the front of this 'story'. A huge chunk. As the girl group's success ignited an entire generation of girl groups in the UK it would be prudent to get the beginning of their story correct. Originally they were going to be called Hymn before Elle and Eternal were considered. That is just one of the misconceptions. A little effort could get these stories onto their true path. The En Vogue part was crucial as to the formation of the group. Disclaimer aside the first chapter of a life story is the most important to set the story on its correct journey. The importance of Eternal's rise changed the UK music industry, including the formation of the Spice Girls. Research is the first order of the day when compiling history.... The truth is - Eternal was my idea from the very beginning. Without my brain they would never have existed as the entity they became. That's not ego, it is a historical fact. Nobody appreciates their work being given one mention when the original blueprint is the fundamental reason for the existence of the reality. My team and I as West End also remixed ALL the first single UK releases for Eternal which were ALL # 1 successes in the UK national dance charts and gave the EMI radio promotion team the necessary reasons to have those singles considered for the coveted playlist spots on the National Radio, from which regional radio took their playlist choices too. Pete Waterrnan was going to sign the girls but backed out on the deal the very morning of their contract signing, saying he didn't think that they would be a success. The En Vogue UK success with the single Hold On (#5 National Chart) was the spark needed to start their US success story. I did that and it was that experience which ignited the idea for a UK version of En Vogue. I took Dennis to see En Vogue at Hammersmith Odeon and said lets form a UK version of this US girl group.
You’re making this long ass commentary on a 1 year old video. This dissertation could’ve been it’s own video on your end if it’s that damn pertinent to you.
On The Big Reunion you could see how the sisters must have been so hard to work with. Vernie especially was a really stroppy cow. I'm happy the Kele and Louise have both gone on to be very successful outside of the band.
I loved Eternal they were all beautiful girls I still pine for them absolute perfection. Vernies eyes my goodness and look at her husband now I am peeved why couldn't it be me. No better looking women ever for me.
The sisters felt like they were the group they thought they had the power. So many things went wrong in this group. The concept for the group was great, but picking 2 Sister in one group, is always a disaster. It's always 2 against 2 no matter who is wrong or right; the sisters stick together. I all so watched some old interviews, and it always felt to me like the sisters never wanted Louie to be a part of the group because she was white. Every time she talked, they gave her strange looks and stuff like that. At that time, Kelle didn't really realize what was going on; she was to naive. Later, after Louise left, they came for her, and that's when she started to realize the reality of the group she is in. The sisters were stupid. Enternal is a huge group, but they could be much bigger. Esther has a nice voice, but the other ladies could also sing. Using every voice in the group made the sound more internal and attractive for listeners. Esther shouldn't lead the majority of the songs, so most of the songs they did after the first album were middle or slow songs, that was a mistake. They needed more urban pop songs. Louise represented all the white girls, and she had a nice tone; they shouldn't let her go. The sisters did Louise and Kelle dirty and act like they did nothing, but they know exactly what they did. This reminds me so much of Xscape!
@@celiab2307 Girl The spice Girls was not that talented but they outsold Enternal plus your talented Esther in their sleep thats the music business if the sisters were so talented why they didnt succeed when they became a DUO.....???
@terriemarie8836 The spice girls were managed by the right ppl and pushed the girl power narrative at a time when it was mainly male boy bands. Plus, they were mainly white group doing pop music. Easter was talented, but they probably lost everyone behind the scenes who were there from the beginning. It takes more than a good voice to succeed in the music business
@@celiab2307 It seems like you contradict yourself, first you said Louise didn't have a strong voice now you say it takes more than a strong voice. My Point is if Enternal had benefited from every member of the group they would have been bigger because every one of them had a different sound (Vocally), just because Esther had the most soul, doesn't mean she is the one who needed to sing all the time. In the Supreme, Laurence was the best singer you can't even compare her Voice to Diana Ross, but Dian was the one who became the sound for the supremes and helped them to get the biggest hits. I'm sure if Enternal would change the structure of the group, they would have been much bigger.
The real story was the sisters wanted Louise out so they can concentrate in America as 3 black girls , after they forced Kelly out , the sisters were known at the time as not nice people and probably still not
I did read somewhere that management suggested she leave, as it would've been hard to promote a mixed race R&B girl group in the States, but in return the management team would get her a solo record deal?! Not sure how true it is, but I still find it really hard to believe that someone with (no disrespect intended) only moderate singing talent, would want to leave a massively successful group after 1 album,to go Solo?
@@dranchd6571If anything, Louise was holding them back. Racism in American music at the time was rife, they wouldn't have accepted a mixed R&B group. As far as 'not selling magazines' as black girls?? Well, who gives a s**t about a magazine... when they were selling millions of copies of Albums in the UK, and around the world.
@JDhappy81 Vernie did say that they had a lot of problems in America when they were promoting Stay (which went top 20 there) that they would do interviews for magazines or radio stations and the interviewer would deliberately ignore Louise like she wasn't there. It was probably a mixture of management thinking with Louise out they would have a better chance in America and Louise also wanting to do her own thing, so it was win win, just a shame they never really bothered to go back to America and the album they were recording for there got shelved because of Kelle.
I can't believe the sisters sent Kelle a fax to kick her out of the group. Imagine being part of a band for 8 years and getting kicked out that way. That's so low down. I'm so glad Kelle had the most successful career after the group finally broke up.
Not true at all. Kelle wanted to leave which is why the Greatest Hits was released early. The fax story is total lies and Kelle’s way to promote herself! #sad
@@geeunit831 of course kelle would say that . She was on a mission to cancel Easther and Vernie at the time. Before The Rain was cut short and the Greatest Hits was released because Kelle had asked to leave the group several times.
@@1977UK How delusional are you to believe that? If Kelle wanted to leave she would’ve left on her own accord she didn't need their permission to leave the group lol. Esther and Vernie wanted her out so they got rid of her and got their lawyer to do it. Those are the facts.
@@geeunit831 you really need to do your research as they did put the Greatest Hits out due to that. Kelle was gong back and forth and messing the sisters about over the last year. That is why the lawyers were called in at the end. Facts!
I have to say I kinda of hate that luise what specify why , the others girls seem like they didn’t want her to go but she gives off the impression that there’s more to they story
They did for their fourth album... it flopped like a limp lettuce leaf. So if they'd done that from the beginning, we probably wouldn't even be talking about them now. :p
No need, she was on a heavily pushed solo run that pop music fans was not fully into, she got married to a footballer with a famous surname, then got carried on several TV shows which she never made much impressions on....but still agents and TV execs still like her because she is the kind of "face" they want to push....to this day...sigh....
@@TGFLdn24 I know that but a bit odd that it wasn't mentioned here, people might want to know. I liked a few of her songs but she was always styled really oddly, in a plearther business suit climbing up a ladder. I always use her version of lets go round again to test any audio equipment I want to buy.
The evidence, along with the testimonies of others shows the sisters were a team and they didn’t treat kelle well. They were young but there was a lack of accountability and compassion from all sides
@leroneclarke-oliver3614 Evidence and testimony from Kelle only, not anybody else who worked with them, including Louise who has never once said anything negative about either Easther or Vernie. The sisters have been branded all kinda names because of what Kelle said and only by what Kelle said, yet she takes no accountability for her own behaviour. They may not of treated Kelle well, but context is everything. She claims she was never invited and never got the same schedule as the sisters. They were told by their manager that Kelle didn't want to travel and wanted to record separately and didn't want to work with them. They were doing most of the work, there are several songs on Before The Rain Kelle has no vocals on at all (over half of the album) anyone would get pissed off and fed up with that situation when you are meant to be a group and one member isn't turning up for studio sessions or writing sessions or business meetings and you're being given excuses why she's not showing up. Their side of the story is never discussed, people just take Kelle's word for the situation but don't check her over what they say in response. They are all to blame, management more so if they were doing what the girls say was happening behind the scenes on the big reunion and their lack of communication split them apart. It's a shame, and I'm glad they managed to clear the air and have some understanding of how one another felt at that time. It was good to see them patch things up and they remain on good terms now.
@@Right_Direction_ we will have to agree to disagree. Plenty of people have made it clear the Bennett sisters were not as ‘friendly’ as they could have been. These were young people without the correct tools to navigate the world they were in. K freely admits she should have just said ‘Oi, what’s your problem’ and the sisters should have recognised the horrible imbalance in the dynamic. Plus we can’t ignore that management could have made all this a lot worse. People from that era who KNOW them all don’t mess with E&V but K and L are booked, busy and liked. I don’t think it’s fair to place the blame at K feet. Some people just don’t gel
@leroneclarke-oliver3614 We will have to agree to disagree my friend. I didn't place all the blame as Kelle's feet, all of them are to blame, all 3 girls. I can see both sides, but I understand the frustration the sisters had with the situation and why it became impossible to carry on with the same set up, because most would feel the same for the reasons I stated in my last reply. I have not met Louise or Vernie, but did Easther and she was absolutely lovely, extremely friendly. We all have off days and we both know women, particularly black women in the music industry get it harder than anyone else and just being assertive and outspoken gets you branded all kinda things, whilst men who behave worse don't. Anyway it's water under the bridge now, I hope life is treating you well. Peace out ✌️
Vernie and Esther really destroyed themselves in the end… how christian of them to not reach out when Kelle was diagnosed. It’s blatantly obvious they are bullies.
Why did Kelle and Louise want to be in a group with the sisters when they blatantly didn’t like them and then they trashed them publicly? It seems Kelle and Louise realised that the talent of the group (the sisters) was their entry to fame and wealth. The sisters have always maintained a dignified silence. How sad that Kelle and Louise put the sisters down all the time and enabled trolls and online hate!
UK is so racist, but only ever passed Louise Nerding a.k.a. Louise Redknapp. When Esther and the others could probably ousting her for days, Plus they have personality /charisma and beauty too. Smh
You really don't know WHAT you're talking about as regards this group. The 'racism' tag is used so freely these days, it's lost all meaning anyway. Go educate yourself, see what a foolish comment you made up there, then come back & delete it.
Oh no. Try again with casting Donnie Simpson. The actor being considered is exceptional but not esthetically similar- looks or swag. Please try again. Besides. Donnie was well known for his green eyes. Both men are handsome but in entirely different ways that people like me who were around in the 90's, will not understand if the actor is cast.
They taught the British how to really sing ,, as for the racism they experienced socking, simply jealousy ,, excellent tracks they should be very proud of themselves
They was NO racism you dummy, stop saying things for effect. They just had a natural life span like any pop group, has and internal tensions (mostly because of the sisters) escalated it and saw to it coming to an end. Please engage brain before posting.
They only really became a successful band once they dropped Louise. Sad to see Louise selling out the LGB and women's rights today in the paper. She's a classic anti-feminist- peaked as an FHM covergirl and then obtained 'fame' by marrying a footballer.
"U shouldn't b doing this....the music is ungodly!" lmao ffs I bet these families changed their tune quick once the dosh came rolling in.... P.S these sisters were lucky to have Louise and Kellie. Heh who r these sisters now?! Pretty much noone.

Verne was an absolute stunning woman, but always seemed over looked by verious groups and corners....
The real story was the sisters wanted Louise out so they can concentrate in America as 3 black girls , after they forced Kelly out , the sisters were known at the time as not nice people and probably still not
Ever considered that Louise felt they were holding her back, especially as black girls on covers don't sell?
They didn't want Louise to leave, they remained on good terms with her and they still speak.
Why didn’t you do a “where are they now” for Louise?
Loved them
I can't believe the sisters sent Kelle a fax to kick her out of the group.
#sad
@@1977UK Not true Kelle herself said it came out of the blue and she would know better than you lol
Look Power of Woman is a top album and Louise naked debut album is also a top album.
Stoosh ladies always have difficult times.
I dont understand why the sisters just didnt do Eternal as a duo in the first place 🤔
Honestly, all very talented but I don’t know why Esther wasn’t pushed as a solo artist like the U.Ks answer to Whitney and Mariah
They did for their fourth album... it flopped like a limp lettuce leaf. So if they'd done that from the beginning, we probably wouldn't even be talking about them now. :p
i see vernie all the time in my area
Such a Shame they were such an amazing group 😊
These girls could've been much bigger than SWV
Stay and good thing were the best songs they did... Had no idea stay was a cover
I always though I wanna be the only one was with Luther Vandros
I'm so confused about Louise she looks light skin in all these Eternal shots but I'm her solo carreer she's just straight up white.
Hi does anybody know who that woman is at 29:18? What's her name she looks familiar
So random lol but I recognise her from another music video in 90s, just not sure which one. She isn't "famous" though.
@AnneEsther @sovereign think she might have been in girl band Precious w Jenny Frost who took Kerry Katona's place in Atomic Kitten.
She looks like Jill Marie Jones.
@@Kameaux You nailed it. That is Jill Marie Jones from Girlfriends.
I'm sure they'll do well if they can put their differences aside but we don't understand the FULL story! it's like a bitter divorce
I liked Louise’s solo work.
😊
Where is Louise story?
They've had a bit of a falling out with each other in the last few days, regrettably.
No review of what Louise has done since?
No need, she was on a heavily pushed solo run that pop music fans was not fully into, she got married to a footballer with a famous surname, then got carried on several TV shows which she never made much impressions on....but still agents and TV execs still like her because she is the kind of "face" they want to push....to this day...sigh....
@@TGFLdn24 I know that but a bit odd that it wasn't mentioned here, people might want to know. I liked a few of her songs but she was always styled really oddly, in a plearther business suit climbing up a ladder. I always use her version of lets go round again to test any audio equipment I want to buy.
oh they were English. never knew that
Interesting character Kelly is 😏😂😊
Kelle always blames everything on the sisters but never takes any accountability for her own actions back then.
Peace out ✌️
Ah. It’s obvious the sisters were the problem. Hence why THEY don’t talk about it
Vernie and Esther really destroyed themselves in the end… how christian of them to not reach out when Kelle was diagnosed.
Smh
Your comment makes no sense at all !
You really don't know WHAT you're talking about as regards this group. The 'racism' tag is used so freely these days, it's lost all meaning anyway. Go educate yourself, see what a foolish comment you made up there, then come back & delete it.
Girl group huh?
Im confused, why is she constantly reprating her self twice? Maybe she forgot 2 drink coffe when editing the video
Love the research and content but your videos themselves could do with more production Polish, faster, better narration. Like empressive
I actually really liked the pacing of this video. Had a lot of info and was explained really well imo
Have you done a vid on cleopatra🤎? Loved this video btw🙌🏾👏🏾
The Honeyz also please :)
@@Fergpal She actually already made a vid on them x
They only really became a successful band once they dropped Louise. Sad to see Louise selling out the LGB and women's rights today in the paper. She's a classic anti-feminist- peaked as an FHM covergirl and then obtained 'fame' by marrying a footballer.
"U shouldn't b doing this....the music is ungodly!" lmao ffs I bet these families changed their tune quick once the dosh came rolling in....
P.S these sisters were lucky to have Louise and Kellie. Heh who r these sisters now?! Pretty much noone.
Eternal were fantastic band
I like black nails polish on nails 😍❤️
