I can imagine a valorous hunting cadre composed of all Guardinals being tasked to rid an area of Demon spawn and undead. Each with different class lvls in an almost choreographed dance of death as they massacre the forces of evil. It's the stuff Demon Lords have nightmares about.
Those winged ones could be hazardous to larger opponents with access to Feather Fall. Imagine the look on a Giant's face when this little bird man picks it up like nothing, then drop it as the spell wears off!
Played an Aasimar Druid shapeshifter who was the Son of a female Archdruid and the Paragon Lupinal in a 3.5 game that turned into a sprawling Planescape trek. Was fun as balls trying to follow his Dad hither and yon across the planes and catch up to him in order to get him to help defeat the BBG and save his Mom. Found him dying on the fields of Tartarus. Character sacrificed himself to cover the escape of Dad and the rest of the party into the portal. Ended up getting scooped up by the powers at the last second and reincarnated as the new paragon. Planewalked in on the final battle with the BBG at the very last second and saved the day by tearing his throat out with glowing fangs. Epic, legendary fricking win. Was fun as balls to play him afterwards in a Savage Species campaign we pivoted to after that.
I quite like the equinals, they have festivals kind of like the highland games, but, non-equinals kind of get accidentally 'broken'. Also, when they set about getting a difficult task done, they won't stop until they finish it, even when leadership changes their orders, they carry right on, achieving the impossible as others stand by, watching and shaking their heads.
I noticed there were no aquatic, or lizard Guardinals. I'm picturing dolphin like Guardinals to fill in the oceanic spot with a fairly playful demeanor traveling in pods of 6 to 12 members. Lizard Guardinals could be like frilled lizards roving arid areas & often away on scouting missions trying to track the plots of evil on the various planes of the Multiverse, usually traveling alone, or at most in pairs they are quiet & studious individuals, more content to listen than speak.
I know this is a fantasy world, but I suggest sharks instead. If my research on dolphins and sharks are true: Dolphins are rapists and kill for fun. While Sharks are more akin to true neutral but I have seen videos of sharks being pet and bellyrubbed like dogs, also if the entire "Lemon sharks get jealous" thing is correct. Yeah
That's so very true. The guardinals are just based on very common english countryside animals, like plain yogourt. For Elysium, I want strawberry fruit yogourt... I expected peacocks, spotted dogs, giraffes, zebras, capybaras, quetzals, porpoises, manatees, sharks, whales, narwhals, crabs, and lots of lizards. Something you would expect to see in the garden of Eden or just animals you would see in a rich Arabian king's backyard.
Pathfinder has the Agathions which are just the copyright free version of Guardinals and that has, in addition to some of the guys from this vid, they have Cetaceals and Reptials that you could probably convert back into D&D with a little homebrew
God, So many cool aasimar concepts could come some these, WoTC really need to do something like a wild aasimar witch is basically an aasimar with animal traits. I've always wanted to do an aasimar bases off a celestial wolf or a creature like a Kirin. Although with the wolf aasimar I'd just flavor a fallen aasimar, Because the character I have in mind is a little bit inspire by Princess Mononoke and how the spirit gods turn necrotic when slain (???), So I imagine an aasimar born to a tribe, then the tribe is killed off expect the aasimar baby, leaving no one to remember the god leaving the aasimar child with the necrotic energy of a half dead god.
@@AJPickettI can't see how the aasimar would be dead, I just see that wolf that's their patron that their energy flows from turns dark and corrupted, corrupting them. I'd call the god half dead because the wolf was a local demi god, after people get wiped out the wolf only lives though few that's left that know it's story, Even among the few that story extends to "Once there was a wolf," and that's it. With those who know the full legend even fewer.

I love these beings and thanks for this video AJ. The lion guys, the top one, reminded me of a feat I have as either a class ability or possible purchasable feat: Exotic Weapon Use. In that one, the player has a +1 per level in that the class he purchased it in to counteract any negative penalties... but only to counteract the penalties. Sound lame? It gets powerful. That also counteracts called shots, trick shots, etc. with that weapon. So, a level 20 assassin with that talent surprises you and does a headshot on you with his ridiculously cumbersome 3-part-rod-Kusari-Gama hybrid that has a base to-hit with a -4 and additional called shot penalties doubled. On top of the to-hit penalties, other penalties are canceled out... you are in danger... his theatric leap from the shadows probably did not penalize his surprise during the attack, and his STR bonus penalty is also removed in that weapon on top of others. That lion Guardinal with that cumbersome asinine staff-blade dual weapon reminded me of that... fantasy characters can specialize in overcoming asinine weapons' faults to make them work.

I got some questions for you One is it alright if I include the Dragonals from Pathfinder into their ranks and if so how should I treat them? Two. Protection from evil and good only works against creatures, not environments. (there may be other spells for that, never shy away from inventing new spells as needed for your games). Dragonals, sounds like fun, go for it. I am not a pathfinder expert, in D&D the dragons are kind of scarce in the outer planes, all things considered, they are more common in the elemental planes, but, for the gem and metallic dragons, sure, Dragonals would make sense.

Ursinals should have a faster movement speed. Grizzly bears can run at about double the speed of a human being. Is WOC trying to tell me a celestial super bear runs at the same speed as a regular human?
Well to be fair he also said that generally speaking they walk and fight upright..so it does sort of make sense that would be their speed on their hind legs alone
@@agentchaos9332 Fair enough. They are at least capable of running on all fours though. Maybe a rule that they can use their action to double it for one round or something?
@@MrOortCloud that works! Something to also keep in mind is that most fast animals don't have an easy time sustaining speed. Most of the data we have on the speed of bears comes from the 1930s, when such methods were not great in tracking speed or pace. That data suggests that bears may be able to keep up their high speeds for up to 2 mi, but we don't know how trustworthy or repeatable that data is
An Ursinal may not be able to outrun a speeding black bear, but they could run one down thanks to basically never tiring, they could literally jog the bear to death.
Lol. I just picture one reading this comment and being like "pfft so we're fast as humans, why shouldn't we be?" *he thinks for a second and looks at his paws Hm... * he looks at the ground and back at his hands then gets down on all fours and to his surprise takes off like a bat out of hell. Does a Cervidal's horn cure properties work on an individual undergoing certomorphisis & could it undo it once the transformation is complete or would the later take a full Wish spell?
Yes, it will cure them instantly. And no, once the transformation is complete, that creature is now a different being, so yes, wish spell would do the trick.
I really like the lion-like ones. I wonder, has there ever been a playable Lionel race in DnD? It would definately be my most wanted playable race, after Dragonborn of course.
In the current edition, Mythic Odysseys of Theros has a leonin race. If you want to play them/run them, I recommend having a discussion with your dm, as some dms will edit/phase out at lower levels particularly powerful racial abilities
There have been playable Leonals in earlier editions, currently, in 5th edition, Leonals would be suitable for mid to high tier play, levels above 5 at least, they are very powerful beings that travel the planes and kick a lot of ass. One easy option is start off with a Leonin from Theros as a base character, add your chosen character class, give them an Outlander background, or perhaps Local Hero, then as they level up, you can opt to, instead of gaining a class level, unlock some of the celestial powers they have, such as one of their innate spell abilities, the more devastating powers, such as their roar and aura ability would unlock at the same time they gain character class levels where they could normally cast spells of that level anyway. This means you effectively take perhaps twice as long to level up as other characters, but, the Leonin don't die of old age, they have all the time in the world to grow into their true power.
Your description of the neutral good plain makes me wonder why there isn’t an evil good/good evil to represent the mentality of committing atrocities for the sake of the greater good.
@@purplehaze2358 I think what he's getting at is that good or evil in dnd is determined deontologically, not consequentially. So an evil individual could have a net good impact on the world, and a good creature could have a net bad impact on the world. That's my interpretation, anyway.
@@purplehaze2358 I think the devils of hell would disagree with you. As far as their concerned them fighting the blood war and doing what they have to do to hold back the of this is a greater good. They do what they have to do to keep the universe safe and everybody should get in line and help them out as far as they are concerned.

Considering it was alreadu the case in 3rd edition (all guardinals can lay on hands except the mustevals) ‚ I'd say that's not a mistake and they do lack this ability. Then again‚ why they lack it is a mistery
1) What happend to the previous Cervidal paragon? 2) And are there other types of Guardinals besides these one's? Could there be other types outside these one's? 3) What do they think of evil mortal organisms who are that way because of their entire tribe/country or are naturally that way but still have the possibility for good/neutrality/ not a rotten basterd? Examples would be evil dragons, giants (or blue and orange moralaty beings in genaral, the fey would be another example), humanoids, nagas, aberrations, elementals and souls who were one way in life but got reincarnated against their own volition into a being that's another way such as geani: a neutral/evil/ bad person into a djin; a bad/ evil/ good person into a maride and a good/neutral/ bad person into a effrit or dao.
1) The five companions are subject to change, some get killed, others retire I guess. From the Planescape setting, Talisid's five original Companions were as follows: Duke Lucan (lupinal), Duchess Callisto (ursinal), Duke Windheir (avoral), Lord Hwhyn (equinal), and Lord Rhanok (cervidal). In Warriors of Heaven, Windheir is noted to have been replaced by Zvestra. I don't know all the details as I have not read the books yet. 2) Not that I know of, but yes, I don't see why not. There is a race of Rhino-like beings that got transplanted to one of the upper outer planes.. things change, existence is complex. 3) There are plenty of examples that demonstrate time and again in the D&D literature that no mortal race is born evil, they are indoctrinated into their culture. There are full-blooded pacifist Orcs, there are Lawful Good Drow, that is beyond dispute. Supernatural beings from planes of existence that are innately evil are a different matter, for example, demons simply can not be good, and devils simply can not be chaotic... could a devil be lawful good though? Yes, they most likely could, but they would find the Nine Hells intolerable. Otherwise, what would we do if we wanted to run a story about a monk trying to reform a wayward Rakshasa and turn them into a Deva? The lore should never serve as a barrier to storytelling, if it gets in the way... discard it.
I used savage species to play a half dragon centaur fighter, specializing in flying lance charges. I can’t remember his name now but he was an unusual fusion of a blue dragon and a horse man, purely because a mage wanted to achieve an artistic aesthetic for his creation. He lived a good life at the hands of this wizard surprisingly and even became an adept painter. But his true calling was war.
Y'know weirdly enough after I saw The Kollector in MK11 I had a wacky idea about Shang Tsung fusing Tarkatan, Naknadan, Centaur and whatever-Reptile-is to make a savage, spiny centaur monster with a retractable, prehensile tongue and a total of ten limbs. Four legs and six arms of different sizes. The two biggest ones are used to move faster for dashes in a six-limb rush. Reading you reminded me of that wacky idea. I should draw it some time...
He says: Backstory? Eh, this cool wizard dude thought it'd look good and we chilled after. Subconscious Translation: ME WANT FLY HALFHORSE-HALFDRAGON-HALFMAN WHO GO BOOOM BOOM *mimics a jet in flight with his arms* HE GO BRBRBRBRBRBRRBRN BOOM *crashes his fist to the table and flicks the opposing Gnoll miniature across the room* HAHAHAHA BYEBYE! *Everyone nods in approval, satisfied with a job well done.* Lol seriously though that's like the perfect mixture of ridiculous and awesome. I might be in love and steal it for my world. Horgonman? Er, Drorseman? Drataur? Hmm might change the wings to aarakokra or roc or something though. Aarahorman? Hmm, OH GOD YES HORKOKMAN. Mission fucking accomplished gentleman.

Cool!!!!!!!, hopefully we can see them as future playable races for DnD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😃
can't wait for your next video man!!! keep up the good work, you'll always get a good recommendation from me. Hope other people find your channel, I've been spreading the word lol.
I appreciate that!
I've got a nice cold pint of amber goodness! Speak on good man! Love your stuff!
Coolest looking celestials.
Lol. I just picture one reading this comment and being like "pfft so we're fast as humans, why shouldn't we be?"
*he thinks for a second and looks at his paws
Hm...
* he looks at the ground and back at his hands then gets down on all fours and to his surprise takes off like a bat out of hell. He runs back jittering from excitement as he yells at the other Ursinal's
Guys! Guys! Youre not gonna fricking believe this!
A.J. Is like the Mr. Rogers of DnD and I love him
First I ever saw of Mr Rogers was that movie with Tom Hanks. But yeah, I'll take it.
If a guardinal turns evil what would it become? A demodand perhaps?
It would become dead... hunted and captured by the other Guardinals, then either rehabilitated or euthanized.
@@AJPickett this would make for an amazing campaign arc that explores the relationship that goodness has to rehabilitative versus retributive justice.
Do corrupted Guardinials exist? Like a corrupted Lionel nerfed slightly due to the corruption could be a formidable baddie for sure
They would be rescued and rehabilitated by other Guardinals, and if no cure is possible (unlikely) they would euthanize the individual.
@@AJPickett oh that went from kind hearted intentions to dark real quick 😂 so a bit of homebrewing the lore would be needed 🤔
"they are vegitarians, but never mention it" LOL :-D
Lawful evil.
@@AJPickett Lawful evil is more tyrannical dictator than someone forced to do terrible things for the greater good IMO
So they torture, humanoid souls, and turn them into devils so what. Would you rather have to have the abyss as your neighbor? They do what they have to do to keep the universe safe and everybody should get in line and help them out as far as they are concerned.
Good video AJ

The manual says that all guardinals can lay on hands, but that ability is not detailed in the musteval entry. Do the mustevals lack that ability?
I am not sure, I would say give them that ability anyway.
The lore should never serve as a barrier to storytelling, if it gets in the way... discard it.
Oh so the goat guys are good beard devils.
Is there an Infernal or Abyssal equivalent to these guys? Or would that just be the mid ranking Devils/Demons?
Greater Devils and Demons, the lesser types would not stand a chance.
@@AJPickett I seem to remember you comparing the paragons to the demon lords...Talasid vs Demigorgon who wins?
@@agentchaos9332 DEMOGORGON ALWAYS WINS... because someone has to. *shrug*
Raksashas leading an invading army of Tieflings, Gnolls would make a adveture.
Well I guess I'm going to make an equinor Bard name Bojack
Ha! Of course.
Homebrew innate power: Cone of Depression.
He says:
Backstory? Eh, this cool wizard dude thought it'd look good and we chilled after.
Subconscious Translation:
ME WANT FLY HALFHORSE-HALFDRAGON-HALFMAN WHO GO BOOOM BOOM *mimics a jet in flight with his arms* HE GO BRBRBRBRBRBRRBRN BOOM *crashes his fist to the table and flicks the opposing Gnoll miniature across the room* HAHAHAHA BYEBYE!
*Everyone nods in approval, satisfied with a job well done.*
Lol seriously though that's like the perfect mixture of ridiculous and awesome. I might be in love and steal it for my world. Horgonman? Er, Drorseman? Drataur? Hmm might change the wings to aarakokra or roc or something though. Aarahorman? Hmm, OH GOD YES HORKOKMAN.

There was nothing but snark and furry jokes when the idea of an all-guardinal campaign was brought up. As soon as the portal spat the group out in Baphomet labyrinth, all the jokes stopped and shit got real.
It’s the All-Guardinalsman Party lol
How mad do you think the guardinals would be if they found out what the Rilmani are doing?
They know what the Rilmani are doing (well, the Ursinals certainly know how to get that information)... the multiverse is in a state of balance.... for now.
Yay!
lupinals kind of reminds me of the hound archons....i wonder if they share some kind of origin
The outer planes reflect the prime and vice versa.
