Yes we all agree with you MrRhexx. We all agree about the best goddess lol
12:00 the part about "Half of those slain in battle & all women 'so slain'..." means all women slain in battle. Referring to 'slain in battle' as the condition.
One thing you mentioned is how the Norse invented dark elves. Thing is, as I understand it, the Svartalfr (dark/swarthy elves) were nothing like the drow we think of today, or any of the dark elves in modern fantasy. In fact, I've heard a lot of speculation that this was another name for dwarves. Yeah, in Norse mythology it's been argued that dwarves are actually dark elves.
Still hoping for what they don't tell you about goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears
YES
Seconded
Thirded
Fourthed
All of the goblinoids, each with their own video!!! Please
Norse mythology has provided with so much to fantasy. Even more than what’s mentioned here that’s less known.. the Santa Claus’ elfs are called “Nisse” (Nisser in plural). The Mare (Gave people bad dreams… hence nightmare), Nökken, and as it was mentioned in the video dark elves but also light elves, Fossegrimen, Huldra, Vordr, Draugr (ofc), Ratatoskr, Norns, Valkyries and ofc. plentiful magical animals.
And contrary to Tolkien’s interpretation and DnD by extension; the color of the dwarves skin is not what we normally depict them, but they’re “blacker than ink and dwell inside stones and mountains, in a place called Svartalfheim”.
Eh. Half that stuff you started listing like Vordr? I've never heard of. So I wouldn't count that. Has to be something the general public would've heard of. And he mentioned the Draugr and I think Valkyries were so obvious they didn't need a mention. Especially since they're talked about throughout the video. Pretty clear they're Norse.
In my families telling of the myths, Dwarves and Dark Elves are one and the same. Known as "Svartalfr" obviously, hailing from Svartalfheim and they aren't traditionally stout or short. They are just similar in height to humans of Midgard some shorter, some taller and normal Alf (roughly equivalent Tolkien Elves) of Maybe with better night vision and better smithing/technology/magic (2 Svartalfr smith brothers, having made the God weapons - Mjolnir, Gungnir and the Magical chain/ribbon for the binding of Fenrir) and are generally physically strong, somewhere between Humans and Jotnar.. Also Svartalheim is either a realm of darkness or a realm all underground, so some myths put them as Super pale white skinned or Ink black skinned.
The inhabitants of Svartalfheim are interesting to explore. It becomes less interesting when transformed into the pop culture versions.
@@taco9061 Having read most books on Norse mythology, I can confirm. Like the rings and spear(Gungnir) of Odin was not conceived by dwarves but dark elves(svartalv, they also live underground) . That's how it's always described in Norwegian at least. And I really understand the confusion since the archetype of the dwarf and dark elf is exactly the same. One could imagine delf sounding like dwarf with some imagination and and linguistic issues when the mythology was conceived, and we're there. Long post, hopefully someone finds it interesting. =)
Then along swanned Christianity with their dark age and killed off all creativity in the human mind for the next thousand years.
I was not mentally prepared to hear Rhexx say “a different kind of sword fighting” I was drinking some water man I could have drowned
"A different kind of sword fighting" - MrRhexx
"These guys invented fantasy" You're not far off! A lot of modern fantasy comes from a mix of Norse mythology and Celtic folklore. Epic fantasy as a modern genre was popularized by Tolkien, who openly admired and very clearly drew from Norse mythology when he was writing the early drafts of the Silmarillion, which became the background for the Lord of the Rings. Since the rest of the genre pulled from LOTR, it also took a lot of those Norse elements.
If you're interested in learning more about mythology and writing tropes, I'd recommend checking out Overly Sarcastic Productions. They've got some really great videos on the subject.
I wouldn't exactly credit Tolkein with the influence of Norse mythology on modern fantasy. The fact is these myths on their own have inspired fantasy writers from before and after Tolkein. The war-hungry vikings described in this video resemble a lot more Robert E. Howard's Conan mythos for example. Actually, much of everything Barbarian and sword and sorcery adjacent comes in large part from Howard. Acererak was likely inspired by Thulsa Doom. Tolkein's impact can't be understated, but LOTR being the basis of all modern western fantasy? Nah.
@@animation1234111 Well, that's why I said he _popularized_ it, not that he founded it completely. I'm aware that there were other fantasy writers before, but the genre wasn't as mainstream back then.
What about Kali, horus, seth, enki, enlil, tiamat, Gilgamesh. Malqart. I must admit greatest heroic poem " im the teeth of the darkness, the talons of the night, (i added this last part) the eyes of the abyss! I am Beowulf" what a triumphant victory
they have videos about other mythologies?
Following what you said. Fantasy made of other cultures or alien cultures to us (the japanese) could make into very interesting settings and historys (see The Elder Scrolls 3 :Morrowind who seems to be somewhat based on indian culture)
As if anyone didn't know that.
Thing to note about norse dark elfs though: Some evidence points towards them just being dwarfs
And at the same times the dwarves we think of, don't exist
@@placeholdername3818 what do you mean by that? How are the original dwarves?
@@piketheknight2581 No valid distinctions can be made between both mythologically. If a story uses dwarves you won't see it use dark/black elves. And if you see it use the elves you won't see it use dwarves.
Edit: And there is no evidence that they're described as all bearded gruff little people.
@@placeholdername3818 Not to mention that some known dwarf names literally have elf (alf) in their names, like Gandalf. Sorry that I decide to answer this almost a year after the comment.
@@piketheknight2581 There was a theory based on a few texts where the idea for 'Dark elves' might have just resulted from the mistranslation of the word of 'dwarf', so some guy(s) may have just mistranslated something, which is no surprise considering for houndreds of years norse stories were only passed on vocally, which if you've ever played a game of telephone, ends terribly.
As a matter of fact, past few decades we've realized a ton of terms from norse mythology have been mistranslations, or misunderstandings, especially since many things were translated through multiple languages.
But not so much that it's mattered all that much.
If I wasn't so enamored with the Beastlands I would love to visit Ysgard, but well, I don't think I could last that long in such a place haha
Just make sure the first time you die do something brave. You'll be fine 😉
If I was going to Ysguard, I would want to have a local guide who's willing to act as my bodyguard.
I never bothered to ask about Ysgard so couldn't possibly know what they weren't telling me. Guess I needed to know. Thanks man.
Amazing content, ideea for a future video: What They Don't Tell You About Planetar's and Deva!
How come your comment was written 22 hours ago? Is my phone drunk?

I love the ogre Class! A perfect brute!
Also a great way to play a 40k ogryn for a one shot.
Its also the perfect opportunity to have your kobold party member make a howdah and the goblin to snipe from it. Finally get to be that true walking fortress.
your videos really bring me joy. i have not ever played DnD before but i love your lore videos. I am a journalism student and i also study politics both those worlds are full of division and strife and your videos let me escape from the nastyness so thank you. i truly enjoy your videos, i found your channel when i was a kid in school and i loved your lore videos. i do hope you do lore videos again that are in other universes like lord of the rings or elder scrolls but regardless your work brings me joy. so thank you, i love your work becuase you never mention worldy issues like politics or drama. just thank you rhexx
Great video, well done :). You asked on the RL divide between the halls, and which women go to. The consensus I've heard among followers is that it depends on one's inclinations. A natural warrior whose main calling was fighting would go to Valhalla regardless of gender. There's nothing in the RL Norse lore I'm aware of that precludes women from ending up in Valhalla, and there are examples of renown warriors among women and the Gods (see, for example, Skadhi). Destinations aren't certain, but it's more likely than not that there are women in Valhalla.
The Ysguardians may be fearless due to being able to re-spawn, but bravery is not the absance of fear. To have bravery is to be afraid, and then conquer that feeling.
- a college of wispers bard.
Had to come back a rewatch the video to see if I missed a hiatus announcement. I'm sure you've got something cooking, even if you needed a well deserved break. Looking forward to learning more lore!
Giants also existed in Greek Mythology look up the Gigantomachy which was the war between the Olympians and the giants who were children of Gaea and Tartarus
Giants are one of the creatures that existed in all Mythology
@@ConcerninglyWiseAlligator r/ConfidentlyIncorrect
@@rainbowmothraleo Thanks, now I actually looked it up.
Your doing amazing MrRhexx, you’re already a quarter of the way through the outer planes. Just 12 more to go!
REALLY hope we can get videos on the different characters in ysgard like some of the giants and the most important gods, or a video covering the other locations that were on the map shown here. or atleast a video on Odin. great work as always anyway!
please put all these videos about the afterlives in D&D in a playlist, so we can find them later.
They've really changed the valykrie. Used to be about deva level at most.
The two dislikes are from wizards of the coast. They are sick of you revealing the weaknesses and inconsistencies of the lore
Naw they know they suck. Rewrite every edition so you Have to buy ALL the new supplements. Been that way since Gary 😉
I NEED you to do a "What they don't tell you about Goliaths" :) LOVE the channel. Thank You for all your hard work.
Well, I just found out which afterlife I'd prefer! TIME TO START WORSHIPPING FREYJA!
One millon Eihnjar and each one have the power of a pit lord? Screw that... Asgard must have one of the strongest armies of the multiverse
So fun fact; einherjr is best translated to "one man army" or "one man ravager".
Oh cool the 3rd part.
Thanks for the video!
Collectively voted best goddess. Well, she’s got my vote. Really want to play a devotee of her at some point.
Haven’t seen it, but already know that it’s gonna be great, I really love this outer planes lore
HELL YEAH!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for this video to drop!
My last/first pc, a devout follower of thor, ended up in ysgard after about 4 years of play shortly after he hit lvl 20, a lot cooler after having listened to this video, great job!
Can we talk for a second about how hilarious those "extreme misunderstandings" are. Like really that's absolutely funny but also a little believable.
Ysgard truly sounds like heaven
Many a Klingon would agree with you... I'm sure Sto'vo'kor is parked somewhere on the plane.
Fimbulwinter is actually the three years of winter leading up to Ragnarok.
I find it somewhat funny that Ysgard abd Acheron, 2 planes that are litteraly opposite of the great wheel, both are a plane of constans conflict
The nature of their conflicts are the polar opposite where asgard conflict is all about "you", your challenges and journey.
Archeron conflict is meaningless attrition that deprives the fighters of "you", your just another combatant and there is no glory only the desperate fight for spiteful survival.
There is a pattern here, like how Elysium and Hades (described as literally the goodest and the evilest planes of the multiverse) both has the ability to entrap their visitors.
To be fair though Odin and Freyja both use Magic A LOT. They're both noted for their incredibly potent sorcery.
Why, why? Why?! Why is THIS so beautiful?! My favorite channel in RUclips, period!
Please make an Outsiders video!
Oh I'm about to go to work but you better believe I'm sticking a pin on this video and coming back to it the moment I get home. You rock Mr. Rhexx.
Whenever you say "this is not in D&D", I'm pretty sure you mean it's not on 5E... 3.5E has everything and laughs at the rookie numbers of 5E xD
I LOVE YOU MR RHEXX!
And 2nd edition mocks 3.5 numbers heh...on edit I am almost positive I have every sourcebook too(when my first group disbanded everyone left their books from the older members and the DM let me have them when no one came back for em for over a year. Got everything but the draconomicon (DM kept that one heh)
another great video dense with info and fantastic imagery
19:56 battle of the gods you say?
*writes up a new sun soul monk with flavor changes to aesthetics*
Ah, valkyries, the "monsters" which has 3 totally different description in 3e depending on which book did you read.
There is the maneuver-using ones of Tome of Battle‚ the quasi-deities who resurrect Einherjars from Deities & Demigods. Who are the third?
@@benikujaku4567 Hmm, I was pretty sure we got one in one of the monster manuals, but I can't tell in which one.
I've always wondered what the CR and stats of a Valkyrie would be, and how they'd stack up against other celestials if converted to 5e. I've seen homebrew that puts them at CR9, CR11 and CR30, but none of those are an actual conversion of older edition stats(presumably they'd be over CR 11 if their freaking horses are CR12)
@@agentchaos9332 Book of nine sword version is CR9. The deities and demigods version is a bit trickier, as they have no CR assigned, but they are lvl20 paladin quasi-deities, which basically means they are level 0 gods with matching superpowers.
Please make a video of what they didn’t tell us about cloud giants please
I really love these videos man, please keep it up!
Every source I’ve seen says Fimbulwinter is a prelude to Ragnarok, not after it.
Elistre is everyone's favourite because she has the best outfit ;)
Could you do otyughs and neo otyughs? They're just so cool to me for some reason.
Also, I was thinking about my own barbarian... and he would hate it... there's no meaning in it for him, even though on a surface level it would be perfect, but my thri-kreen barbarian would absolutely despise the place lol... So that's a new story for me to explore in my mind
uu nice
i wait or i cant find alo about
Arborea and elysium and limbo i intreit in to see whole the spetrum of chos-good part
good job !
Gran contenido, y lo esperaba con ansias para enriquecer el trasfondo de un pj favorito, gracias.
Funny, what you said from around 27:45 to 28:15 just shows the value of Tolkien's work to us, who roll those click-clack-rocks! Funny, funny!
I am currently running a campaign were they are trying to stop Ragnorok. Yes I know in cant be stopped in lore. But DM's privilege. Thanks for the video. More info will help me flesh out the journey.
Actually in lore Thor stops it so your fine...on edit taiki and the previous guy did a good allusion to this in pretty much all the Marvel movies. I was impressed.(Norse dork here 2nd edition encyclopedia heh).
So here’s my question… the elves and dwarves and giants that inhabit this plane… they’re not petitioners, right? So what are they doing there? Or if they are petitioners, does that mean my dwarf may aim for Nidavelir instead of Moradin’s hall on Mount Celestia when he dies?
There are both petitioners and planars, I assume
Ysgardian dwarves are a separate race of dwarves, but I assume they would welcome any dwarven petitioners
Just remember MrRhexx, while it is the name of the Wolf in Dark Souls, Sif is also the name of Thor's wife.
glad to see the uploads. I fall asleep to these and dream of this shit lol.
Thank you for the video.
"when my time has come, I vow and swear, I will go to Valhalla in combat gear! I'll take my place in Odin's hall, let me fly to Asgard when I fall!"
Hmm...so your description is directly in conflict with AJ pickets, as far as the lower layers of Musphelheim and Nidavilir. My understanding has always been that the top " layer" of Ysgard/Gladheim consisted of land burgs and floating islands, but they were all suspended over one massive solid land below( musphelheim) and that Nidavilir consisted of the underground caverns beneath Musphelheim. Also idk about using floating landmasses or lack of gravity to denote chaotic plains, considering Acheron is lawful and functions the same way
Thanks for the lore! ^^
Please more Eilistraee content!!! Love it as always!
I do like how active she is with her followers the whole qilue llolth'ghaunadar promenade storylines for the novels was fantastic.
Also “Heroic Death” is very specific and DOES NOT INCLUDE BACKSTABBING. Loki killing everyone from behind (in the Marvel Movies) basically means he sends them automatically to Helheim, no questions or objections allowed.
Which would mean this is not the place for rogues, then?
@@PetroBeherha Probably not. Dying facing your opponent was the most honorable part of combat in Norse culture. Turning your back on an opponent is a bit of a bad idea anyway, at least if your opponent is still capable of attacking.
@@PetroBeherha well, a rogue can still fulfil the "noble fighter" archetype. For example, a fencer can be a rogue that fights in honorable duels
Thanks for this.
Could you do more Demon lord? If you got the current dnd Demon Lords, mayhaps the pathfinder ones? Your long videos about demons and Abyss are my favorite.
Can't wait to see some monsters again. Love it tho
I always found the idea of Valkaries to be very interesting. These chicks are badass!!
Ah Valhalla sounds like my kind of place. Fighting for fun. OH HELL YEAH. !!!! Just let me go get my Heavy Armor & Giant Greatsword from my Armory where i forge all my Weapons & Armors. !!! 😁
Isgard sounds like the ideal MMO :D
I've always been interested in Sylvari
Whoo! Best thing to wake up to
Giants are also biblical in the nephilim, which loosely translates from Hebrew as giant.
Now I have an idea for a Dark Elf ( or half Dark Elf) Barbarian who worships Eilistree and the Norse pantheon and is also very fond of gaudy cloths and cheap jewelry.
"You will own nothing and you will be happy." I mean, Olidammara is somewhere in the vicinity... what prayer do you have of holding onto anything of notable worth? :)
Can you do a "what they don't tell you about your father" cause I never met mine and idk what he's like
I believe the North culture a woman dying during childbirth was considered a noble death. And that is probably what they mean by a woman dying a noble death during childbirth would go to that hall.
I'd like to see you do something on the Infinity Spindle.
I would like to see Arboria or Limbo covered next.
Would love a video on the primordials
Do the yugoloths !
They're semi-secretly in charge of Rhexx channel and any information is likely suspect 🤔.
Can we have an episode on the Morning Lord soon?
I’d love to see a what they don’t tell you about the different ores adamantine mithril ect ect
I really think you should lauch a kickstarter to have an Harcover version of the monster classes and dragon hoard, i dunno for all of me fellow subscribers, but i would definitely back it, just to have these as a harcover for my games
Future video idea: What They Don't Tell You About Yuan-Ti
Hi,you r u planning on making another monster classes book? If yes what you are planning as the next classes?
Maybe ghoul/ghast,yuan-ti(casts,like malison to one of the 3 special yuan-ti monster to Anathema) & Demon(with types instead of each individual demon, like bulk for the muscle type demons like goristos and nalfeshnee, trickster to the snaeky ones like the quasit or shadow demon and despoilers like the vrocks or bulezau). What you think?
In my head Canon Dark Sun is Cyric's personal demi-plane. The more you think about it the more it fits.
I love your videos and find them very useful to better play my characters and monsters. In my next campaign I'm thinking of playing as a kender do you think you could do a video on it?
Would it be lore friendly if Odin gives a mortal a 2nd chance to prove themselves within the DnD realm. I lean both ways myself.
Reasoning fighter in party is a devote to Odin, but dies at early level. End game goal was to have the character die valiantly and be accepted into Ysgard for a bit of a shock and awe for the whole party. Especially if the death is not an epic death for whatever reason at a lower level. Say Rouge assassin or random poison kills them off early.
2nd edition legends and lore book would give you a thumbs up. Believe that was the last true supplement with "our" pantheons
I love your Monster Classes! so i just wanted to know if you are planning on making a Chromatic Dragon or even a gem Dragon Monster Class?
I love how the captions interpret Ysgard into Israel lol
Was hoping to see something about the Midgard Dwarfs (Frostburn).
Yo wassup with a video on the Feywild? Shadowfell was crazy
i hope this is not the last of the good planes.. you keep saying that and i got so worried haha.. you need to do Elysium next!!!!
More about Alfheim!!!
Bravo!
I would love to roleplay a 5e Planescape campaign setting!
Any chance, @MrRhexx, you're making a 5e Planescape Campaign Setting?
After they're cramming Spelljammer into the Astral Plane, I say stay the hell away!
I'll do the dirty work of converting creatures myself for the 5e Planescape game I am running.
@@daviddaugherty2816 I hope you do create a 5e Planescape Campaign Setting!
Could you do a video on goblins??
27:05 Funny that the o.g. jocks invented modern nerd culture!
I was also curious about one other thing, with the succubi, and the eeriness what other races canned charm or subdues mortals or races from the devils or demons. Most likely the different races that do the same thing
So it's D&Ds version of the Norse mythos. That's pretty cool. Didn't realize that was in there. Are there any campaigns that focus on this?
I don't think 5e does, and I've never played 4e, so Idk there, but I have like 10 years of experience in 3.5 and never seen anything there either, but that doesn't mean there wasn't, so maybe?
Asgard got dropped along with a few other planes in 4th edition. You have to go back to 2nd edition planescape to get the real juicy goods.
No wonder the Takers set up there.
Greeks also had giants. And pretty much every sea people had a kraken/leviathan mythos.
Most of today's fantasy is some kind of take on Tolkien. Tolkien based his stuff on Norse and other Germanic mythology
