I like how you went into more detail as to why dwarves dislike elves and the fact that elves are one of the most destructive races. Yet they behave as if they are infallible.

I think that is an unfair statement: the most populace race of elves in Faerun exists almost just to point out how fucked up their old empire was and doesn't want anything like it back. Wood Elves are fine, Sun Elves are dicks.

I mainly think of Dwarves as craftsmen. They may be good at warfare, brewing and survival in general, but they excel at stone/metalwork. I remember seeing Moria in LoTR and thinking "Yup, they got that perfect". Massive caverns carved by hand and magic. Giant stone-slab doors, filigreed with gold and other precious metals. Forges that never go cold as masterwork weapons and armor are constantly being produced. I always liked the idea of odd character classes for Dwarves too, like Druids and Rogues. Not every Dwarf needs to be a Fighter or Barbarian. I recall some Dragon Magazine issue that talked about Dwarf Rogues called "Mountain Ghosts".

  • @draxthemsklonst

Until today, I never considered it much; but a dwarf at the forge, pounding away at a lump of steel is most likely praying.
    Human friend: "Whatcha making?"
    Dwarf: "I don't know, yet."
    Epic.

You missed one of the dwarf subraces where all of them tend to lose a lot of their beards other than the Dueregar, the Seacliff Dwarves where the females are less likely to have any at all and the males tend to start sparce and the most facial hair you tend to see with them are some goatees...
Of course, they heavily diverge from the normal dwarven culture to the point where they aren't dealing with forges as much, and tend to be lighter than the average dwarf taking to the seas and boat work...and have an alcohol resistance that, well, dwarfs the other subraces because that tends to be the on thing that unifies the sailor and dwarf parts, so they tend to brew things that most races have to make checks from the fumes...because dwarves...

Power Word Hair is an ancient dwarven binding spell which incapacitates an opponent by causing them to produce epic and unwieldy hair with a growth rate of 1' per level of spell caster per round. A spell first perfected dwarven dragonmaids who tend the dragons bound to dwarven kingdom forges. The hair growth tangles the limbs of the target and imobilizes them.

Was the stone like bread that the Dwarves make introduced before or after the works of Sir Terry Pratchett & his idea of Dwarven Battle Bread, a bread so hard it could be used as a semi-improvised weapon? Who can forget his anti-personnel crumpets, or anti-carvery baguettes.
I remember Pratchett's female Dwarves are often so bearded that many other races are ignorant of the fact that there ARE females, it doesn't help that most on Discworld see gender as something that you don't share with someone until after the first date. God I miss that brilliant author.

I wanted to say I've been thinking about them recently. I was thinking about dwarves religiously at the furnace making things. It's such a staple of their culture through there family and religion. If working together is a paramount virtue. I imagine they would fall into a rhythm of working to gather and there family forge would sound like a drumline with different percussion. Songs for different days or holidays or even different weapons. Each family or clan or city would have different forge songs and beats like different temple styles of kungfu.
    Thanks again man

Dwarves potters made the finest vases in the realms. Hold on, hear me out.
Dwarves are men of fire and earth. Digging clay, one of the most overlooked materials in the world, then turning it into precious works of art is the domain of a dwarf.
Clay is dug out of the ground. Additives are carefully added to get the colors and consistency the dwarf wants for that particular piece. Then the dwarves craftsman adds or subtracts water and shapes it on the spinning wheel.
When he has it in the shape he desires, he adds details with specialized tools. He then ages it until it is dry and ready, and places it in a kiln to bake with a fine glaze.
Dwarves should be famous for their magnificent pottery, just as much as their steel and their stone. Don't leave Mithral Hall without one of Daren Spadehand's brew mugs, crafted with skill and attention in the brewer's halls, it forever carries the heady, earthy scent of brewing dwarven ale.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  Год назад +3

The finest pottery in the realms is created by the Pech, a little known but common humanoid race of the Underdark with the ability to shape earth and stone with their bare hands.

    • @Klancer2
      @Klancer2 Год назад +1

@AJ Pickett Neat! They're probably all but unknown on the surface, but I bet they're amazingly popular in the underdark.
That said, I still bet dwarves are still well known for their pottery, especially aboveground. Lots of races would make good potters, but few are as obsessive over their craft as dwarves.
I would love to see a video on the Pech! That sounds like a fascinating race to visit and explore!
It's always amazing how one ability, "Able to mold earth and stone with their hands" can change a race's entire feel.

As far as I know Tolkien’s version did not farm of grow any food, but rather buying food from Men and some times Elves if they had to.
On the other hand it seems like D&D dwarves do farm livestock and crops. From a narrative standpoint does make the able to be more independent and less dependent on outside trade.

When it comes down to dwarven steel, there is not comparisons, none I cal tell you, sure the elves have their enchanted forges and the fire giants have their great magmatic furnaces, but dwarven steel my friends forged by the hands of a master runesmiths on their elemental, primal forges and anvils, is nothing short of miracles made flesh, or in this case metal,
Dwarves do not use magic, they have no use for it, but they can channel the raw primal power of the elements and arcane into the metals weaving them during the forging and hammering them in place on their anvils, all done by master runesmith, but the metal at its core is were things get interesting, while not all dwarven metal works have a natural magical infused alloyed, the metals used in their weapons and armor are the result of an amalgamation of volcanic mineral being fused together, this is the reason why dwarven-steel never seem to rust, nor lose its edge, but things get even better when actual enchanted alloyed is used along with their runes, I have seen runic axes cut down a giant, a shield taking a spell blast from soccer or armor that can withstand illusions and temptations of demons,

      @@AJPickett A fair point.
That said, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Eberron, Mystara and Dark Sun all have different takes on the Dwarves as well.

Dwarves are some of my favorite dnd races, they may not seem like much, but when you look into them, they are awsome.

Let it known, as true as their craft, that they are a prideful race but it is not founded on false pride.
Nothing stands taller than the might of the Dwarves!

I could have sworn that at some point dwarves were subjugated by the giants. Am I confusing them with another race?

Luv this video - my first toon in D&D was dwarf and fell in luv with them. Any video game after that had dwarf i was in. The stout grind it out attitude never give in - hard working idea i admired deeply. Luv anything dwarf

I foolishly commented on your second video question before I had seen it and for that I apologize.
I would like to see dwarven opinions and relationships with other races particularly the Goliaths as I had a Goliath PC that was raised by Dwarves.

11:37 - "We know them [shield dwarves] in 5e as hill dwarves" Aren't shield dwarves mountain dwarves? (new player here, and I'm making a mountain dwarf). Thanks

Yes, Mountain Dwarves = Shield Dwarves and Hill Dwarves = Gold Dwarves

Yep. Also worth noting that Gold Dwarves have a lot more melanin than Shield dwarves, and the Jungle dwarves are the most pale of dwarven kind on Toril.

Jeez, it sounds like making a dwarf a half-dragon would just be overkill then, in terms of survivability.
I can't remember your exact opinion on wether or not all half-dragons have that elemental ability to digest even inorganic substances, but I figured that would just be nuts if combined with the dwarves natural ability to handle rougher foodstuffs.
Edit: Then there's the additional offensive abilities that they would garner, which would just be gravy.

you could make an evil clan of Dwarves that have high level fighters that go around conquering lands only to sell them and use the money to enrich their stronghold cities. They could be a terrifying force for the hero's to go up against. One of your players might choose to play as an orphaned Dwarven fighter who saved his village several times before his brother comes to recruit him into the fold by force because he is building an army. What if they serve a family of demons from the abyss that look like frieza king cold cooler and stuff.lol

    • @jordanwhite8718

blank blank Wouldn’t king cold and freeza be devils of some kind? They always struck me more as lawful evil.
