You should save the worms for birds.
They are winter life savers !
I feed birds, but the odd (red) squirrel visits my feeding tree as well.
The menu is peanuts, pine nuts, coconut with seeds and lard, walnuts, small sunflower seeds, and bird peanutbutter....
    (No salt or sugar added).
My feeding tree is a small cherry tree, so dessert is also included !
    Love from Norway 🇧🇻

I'd like to express my gratitude for the channel. It has made me realise how nice creatures squirrels are, and I find myself now actually looking out for them. Yesterday I spotted one during my lunch walk. I stopped to watch him, but to my amazement, the squirrel started approaching me from 15-20 feet distance, until he was about 4-5 feet away! He looked at me for about 10-15 seconds, then climbed onto the nearest tree, and kept watching me for a bit from the tree. it was such a nice experience! From now on I'll make sure to carry a bag of nuts and try to feed them. I live in Sweden, this squirrel had a longer coat of fur, with a reddish colour. It seemed much less skittish, as if it knew not all humans are dangerous.

Then the Hawks came and it was a dicey situation to feed them bc of Hawks. I still did feed them until we moved. When my husband went to work the Doves would follow him out of the neighborhood, pretty cute ❤❤❤Joan will never forget that experience!

I never knew squirrels would eat mealworms until a few months ago when I watched one climb up the rail of my deck and proceed to hop right up into the bird feeder and start going to town on mealworms. Maybe they only eat them when something tells them they need a certain nutrient.
If you have bluebirds around, they will annihilate those mealworms! 🐦

Thank you,, a lovely few minutes in my day! One squirrel will come to my front door and snap his tale if peanuts not out. I have to be careful because while it is illegal for your cat or dog to be off you property without a leash or restraint, my neighbors let cats out and they try to ambush squirrels and birds. I very much like bats, not around where I live now, but previously putting out hanging small fruit in trees was an excellent way to feed the bats, especially the mothers who carry their young with them until weaned. I try to make sure there is no obstacles for the bats to hit and fall to the ground, bat cannot fly off from the ground, they 'drop' into flight. Again, cats attack bats, so placing a box over a bat on the ground and calling a rescue (not animal control! They will kill them).

My backyard squirrels won't eat dry meal worms. Even the birds won't eat them. I tried hydrating the worms but still a no-go.

Dried meal worms are delicious and taste nutty. Sadly, those grown for humans are still a bit too expensive. Truly, my favourite treat though. But for the squirrels, guessing they don’t smell like nuts, and they certainly don’t look like nuts!

Mealworms are packed with important nutrients and protein, and other rodents really like them.

Hi - I have a question- what can I do in the winter to help keep feeding my squirrels? I live in an apartment where I am not allowed to feed animals or I will be evicted so every day I go to the property line and hide stashes of nuts. We get tons of snow and I am disabled and use a cane or walker. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you to all the squirrel lovers!! ❤️

Heh he! Well, now I know...don't bother with mealworms! I was curious. Looks like a NOPE for them. I think we'll stick with peanuts, corn, filberts and nutbutters. None of our fox squirrels seem to care much for almonds or walnuts, which has me rather baffled. Those are some yummy nuts! Oh, and macadamias are o-u-t! Crazy babies won't even touch them!
Yes, still trying to catch up on all the old videos! 😊💕

Gotta try pistachios, too! It's hard finding unsalted ones, though.

So is it ok to give them unsalted almonds? And other nuts? What’s in the treat you give them that looks like peanut butter? I love these sweet creatures!🥰

I'm not an expert but I do know that squirrels not only feed on nuts and seeds alone. They also feed on insects, snails and larvae. But I believe they do not see dried insects as food. They only see living insects as an edible food.

There are all kind of opinions out there regarding what squirrels eat, so one of the reasons I'm making these videos is to find the truth. So far I've learned that nothing beats nuts, but they have different preferences and some of them like certain foods and others don't.

@@Squirrels_at_the_window I hope I didn't sound rude? That wasn't my intention. English is not my native language and I'm not even living in the USA but in Europe. I only wanted to share my (very small) experience with you 'cause I've seen squirrels feeding on insects over here although seeds and nuts are preferred. But it's great that you try out different options on feeding these squirrels.

@@wernerpoeschl0510 You didn't sound rude 😊 Funnily enough, I'm also from Europe, but I've been living in the US for almost 5 years. In the country I lived in Europe I never saw squirrels, so I was very happy when I saw them here, and by interacting and observing them daily, I learned a lot about them. 😊🐿️ Do you have grey or red squirrels?

@@Squirrels_at_the_window I'm from Germany. Mainly we have red or brown squirrels. And sometimes you find a melanistic squirrel which is completely black. Can't remember that I've ever seen a grey one like those that are seen in your videos.

Odd that they wouldn't even try them. I guess squirrels are not omnivorous then. If it was a vole or another rodent species, they'd instantly snarf them down.
