Thanks for the informative video without a lot of unnecessary information! You mentioned one thing that the other videos did not, and that was to tell us to do the "tapping" with the open flowers. It makes sense of course but anything new always creates questions and you covered everything.
Thank you so much for this. I've been struggling with my tomato plants inside my greenhouse. I'm going to head out there right now and give this a try.
I want to add compliments to your garden. Busy, lots to eat. I used a paintbrush. We shall see. Somehow three tomato bushes survived a record hot and dry Houston summer. While they flowered all summer, no fruit was set. Now it has finally cooled, again, and I want to get the most out of these mild autumn weeks thru most of what's left of 23. Usually no freeze til jan-feb. Eggplant germinating super . 12 lovely fruit on one bush. Come on down the weather is fine.🌱
I'm in Florida USA and I've noticed a declination in the pollinator population😢 sadly we are looking at the end of the world if they don't prosper and come back❤
I live in a condominium complex and have a small patio where I've been growing tomatoes for 3 years. I've only had five tomatoes over the past 3 years on about 3 or 4 plants and I pollinated my tomatoes with Q-tips ... it was ineffective. I have two new blooms inthe vine which are open and I've used the tapping technique! It is so early in the Spring season that I should be able to get more Tomatoes Now by effectively pollinating the blooms!
Wanted to thank you I have 4 random tomatoes plants growing in my front yard near a pumpkin plant. When all the tomato plants where just growing flowers and slowly die after blooming:( I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. Last week I believe. I stumbled upon your video about how to hand pollinate and I’m so happy that they are finally growing the bees aren’t flying around they are straight up ignoring my tomato and pumpkin plants but it’s ok I hand pollinated both 🥳🥳 fingers crossed on the pumpkins 🤞so thank you I’m slowly learning stuff
Thank you very much for this video Sir, flowers are just starting to emerge on my Tomato plants, so this tip should ensure i have more success in my first year of growing
You’re welcome! I admit, I have been using the toothbrush method since we’re growing so many tomatoes this year, but the finger tapping still works great.
My tomatoes are not flowering as they should I think because we had an exceptionally hot July. I don't have the toothbrush but I do have a v......tor, so I'm... why not? I'm sorry , really couldn't resist either. ☺️🌻😎
I am trying to grow tomatoes first time (or anything for that matter), moved to detached house 1yr ago. Today I put inside the house 160 pots with about 900 seeds in total. I didn't count them, but I emptied all the seeds bags in those pots and I've got no more seeds. I am definitely going to try this as I want a lot of tomatoes. I am in Scandinavia, so the tomatoes need every little bit of help. Thanks for sharing this video.
It seems to me the flowers that ate native in my area like blackeyed susan, coneflower bloom later in the season than when you need to pollinate.I have one day Lilly across the way.I have really cut back on flowers..
That is true, those natives have not bloomed yet while the tomatoes are already flowering. But other non-natives like comfrey, ground ivy and sage have already blossomed and are attracting lots of bees.
I noticed my green bean bush started flowering white (delicious tasting) flowers, but only half of them. The other half ALREADY started sprouting green beans. So thanks to this video, I've started tapping the flowering half to encourage more beans. Thank you.
I think bean flowers are a bit different. I’m pretty sure they’re still self-pollinating but they may not need any help. Still, it couldn’t hurt to try!
Beans are self pollinating. They are already pollinated before the flowers even open so don't waste your time. That's why you can grow lots of different types of beans next to each other and there will be no cross pollination
per the way you described how the flower gets pollinated (I think), would it be best to tap the flower while it is facing straight up towards the sky so the pollen will fall down into where it needs to go? Or, do I have that backwards?
That’s a good question, but it’s not necessary to do that. Gravity isn’t really a factor on this scale. Just shaking the flower in some way can get enough pollen to reach the stigma from any angle.
I am having trouble getting my eggplants to set frui since they are under row covers for flea beetles. If I uncover them for the bees, they will be attacked by flea beetles, so far haven’t been successful with the paintbrush.
That’s a conundrum! I hope you get some soon. For some reason our eggplants haven’t grown much since I transplanted them. Perhaps we have flea beetles, too!
@@SomeRoomtoGrow you will know if you have flea beetles. The leaves become lacework. Diatomaceous earth seems to control them a bit, but must be applied regularly and will also kill pollinators if they get in contact with them. Beneficial nematodes also kill the larva, but I’m afraid they also could destroy ground beetles and other beneficial beetles, so it’s a catch 22. Always prefer to err on the side of less intervention, but so far it has been difficult. Having them grow in a high container also dissuades their presence. I’m working on a video for 2 years testing approaches, but so far it has been tricky. Putting them under row covers protects them until ants bring in aphids, without ladybugs to get to them. I’m using diatomaceous earth to control the ants and aphids inside of the covers, but I can’t allow bees in otherwise they could die. I’m trying to pollinate by hand, but perhaps the temperature inside the row cover gets too hot and causes flower drop.
They do have a lot of insect damage on the leaves. I’ll have to inspect them more closely. Those row covers can trap a lot of heat, I really had a problem with that in the early Spring. Thanks for the advice!
Thank you so much for this video I have a very healthy plant and actually did both methods for my tomato plant but some flowers fell off so will that effect the growth of fruit?
You’re welcome! Yes, the flowers can often dry up and fall off for a number of reasons. I see it most often when the temperature gets above 95F (35C). It’s important to keep the plants well-watered when it’s that hot. Once the flower bud falls off, a tomato will not grow there. If you live in a very hot area, you should consider using a shade cloth over the plants.
So do you need to do this every day? And for how long? Got super excited that I finally got a few flowers so just want to know...maybe there is hope for my black thumb 🤣
You can do it whenever you see open flowers! I do it at least every other day, but usually daily when they’re producing a lot. I’m sure you’ll have success with it!
Unfortunately it’s not this easy, but you can still hand-pollinate them. You have to brush the pollen from a male flower into a female flower. I don’t have a video on that but you can find one on RUclips.
Thanks for this video. It's my first time to plant cherry tomatoes and flowers are already coming out. I'll try this 🍒🍅👍😍. My plant is in pot and indoor.
If it's not producing flowers, the plant probably isn't getting enough potassium or phosphorus from the soil. You may need to use an organic fertilizer.
@@SomeRoomtoGrow sorry for my wordings by I literally make an intercourse happen there 🙈 i tear off the petals and f**k the stigma with it.. thr ratio is 1:10.. tomatoes r my fav but its so time taking the chillies do fine though, I use paint brush the collect pollens and rub them on the stigma, but this dsnt work on my tomatoes God knows why thanks for asking and letting me share my pain

I have some flowers, I used electronic toothbrush to vibrate, but no success. Maybe weather is too hot about 30 degree Celsius.
@tanteckleng5062 that is pretty hot, but not enough to keep them from fruiting.

It is satisfying! I have to admit that I’ve switched to using the toothbrush because it’s a bit faster.
That was a terrific explanation and video, visual and audible. Thank you so much.❤
Thanks for this. Bees are few this year so for the first time I'll be doing this procedure . Great information.
