      @@poolman8676 yes indeed, I had so many cucumbers I pickled 5 jars worth and ate another 6 raw in salads and gave away at least another 6, all from 3 plants. I had the plants trained up a 8ft trellis and across under the roof on bamboo stick hangers in my greenhouse.
      Having said that I had about the same amounts outside in the raised planters that I didnt manually pollinate.

    Luke this cracks me up. My boyfriend has a huge, lush lumberjack beard. I constantly beg him NEVER to shave the beard. The boy regularly reminds/threatens me that the weather is getting hot and the beard will be shaved at some point. He hasn't shaved it in the 5 years we've been dating though. When he does trim the beard, at night I fall asleep next to him and I think I feel the "phantom" full beard when it isn't there. I wake up and it's somewhat traumatic to me because I am so used to falling asleep with my face buried in his wild, soft beard! The boyfriend has won every single beard growing contest that his friends and family have ever entered him in. The boy did ask me recently to cut his long very hot wavy long hair, so I'm game to do that as long as he #SavestheBeard!

      It's all good information.... perhaps maybe a short-clip about 'how-to' cross pollinate vegetables of the same type? For example, this season I'm growing two heirloom tomato varieties Black Krimson & True Black Brandywine... I planted them into my garden already and alternated each plant so hopefully mother nature will do all the work of cross pollinating them... but if you have any tips, tricks, suggestions,etc it could be helpful

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  9 лет назад +1

      Tim Huffman oooh i can try, but it is very tricky with tomatoes. One of the trickiest to be honest.

    • @thuffman44
      @thuffman44 9 лет назад

      oh really? Any type of plant will do then (peppers, cucumbers, etc). You could speak about which plants have a better success rate than others, and maybe even finish with another seed saving demonstration... I've never tried cross pollinating, and to be honest; I haven't been saving any seeds myself because I still have so many seeds left over in the package. But I gotta start practicing so I can start giving more seeds away to my friends and co-workers

    PRO TIP for people who want to use this technique but save some time and money. Every video suggests using paint brushes or q-tips or tooth brushes to get the job done and I'm here to tell you that's not needed. Go outside and find a piece of grass that's grown a bit, observe the stem and you should see lots of short hairs on the stem. The hair on grass stems works wonderfully for hand pollination and you'll notice the hairs perform very similar to the hairs on a honeybee. So you simply get to go out to your squash plant, pluck a piece of grass, pollinate, and then chuck the piece of grass right back on the ground and walah you've saved yourself time and money.

    "...Insert this in here...birds and bees..." You're hilarious, Luke! I think the stubbly thing is a good look on you. Your cucumber looks amazing under the grow lights! You mentioned a couple winters ago that you were trying out Diva hybrid cucumbers so I gave it a try too. Loved it! I love how it's open pollinator, cucumbers were delicious too! I do have a problem though. Usually my melons will start to grow a little bit then get burned/dried and fall off. Or some don't have any pollen. Do you think the plants are deficient of some sort of mineral?

      Wendi Phan The burnng and drying of the fruit is often right after a strong rain, or a drought. The pollen is very sensitive and if it spoils in heat or dampness nothing gets pollinated well.

    How does the male flower get off the plant to fit in the female hole ?🤔 In nature ? You said they were made to fit together 😀
    I thought the bees 🐝 do the pollinating in nature 😊

    I planted my seeds a little over a month ago. I just seem to have male flowers on my plant, no female ones so far. Do I just have to be patient?

    I was just thinking about this because I was considering growing my cucumbers in the greenhouse and wasn't sure if they would need my assistance in pollinating if I grew them there. So you only need to pollinate each flower once or should you do it a few times?

      +Gapeys Grub Yes, once.

    I'm growing some mini cucumbers this year and I've left the suckers on to grow now the main stem is producing a single cucumber each node but the suckers are producing 2 cucumbers per node is this normal for them to do this

    Is it ok to manually pollinate wet flowers? I watered the plants and noticed one male and one female flower, but they were already wet by then. I did try to hand pollinate, but wondering if that will work or not.

    Cucumbers were the first veg I pollinated (last sun). I was a bit weirded out at first and dropped the male inside the female where it got stuck and had to run upstairs and get tweezers. It hasn't been a full week yet and it's about 6-7" long. I just pollinated 2 more and don't get weirded out anymore. Zukes are easier to handle because the male is bigger😑

    In britain the traditional method is to use a paintbrush to pick up the pollen and just dab it on the flowers, best to avoid synthetic brushes tho because the pollen doesn't stick to the fibres well

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  9 лет назад +1

      Omna Allen that is why I didn't mention that method. It totally works, but I find most people don't have good brushes and it leads to poor results.

      Omna Allen haha I wouldn't ever say guru. Always more to learn. I HAVE learned that too many people carry those cheapo kids craft brushes, and they are synthetic fibers. HORRIBLE for transferring pollen.
