That quickly evaporated and Clinton held leads of 12-27 points throughout the election. However, this sense of inevitability lead to many voters staying home and Dole over performed on Election Day.
Dole was next in line to run for President after Bush. Just like McCain in 2000, ended up being 2008 and Hillary was next in 2008 ended up being 2016 and then Biden in 2020.
