That needles joke shows how much we have progressed as a society in some ways. I guess it was unimaginable then that people would actually be supportive of measures that help stop people stricken by addiction from dying of HIV/AIDS or another condition due to an infected needle
The differences between republicans and democrats is largely theoretical. It's mostly lip service either way. Snl used to make fun of both political parties equally as they are both equally ridiculous (think how south park makes fun of celebrity) some candidates make themselves easier targets. And Clinton had/has alot of baggage. Dole lost movement in his arm in service to the country. Which isn't exactly hilarious. But since 911 Republicans act like the republicans of saudi Arabia so that's funnier...sort of..
One cool thing about Bob Dole was that he gave Norm Macdonald one of his two purple hearts from WW2.
