    If you add salt to water and conduct an electrolysis experiment, you will end up getting hydrogen and oxygen, but you may also generate some chlorine gas depending on the type of salt used.
    When you add salt to water, you increase the concentration of ions in the solution, making it a better conductor of electricity. During the electrolysis of salt water, the water molecules at the surface of the electrodes break down into hydrogen and oxygen gases, similar to the electrolysis of pure water. Additionally, if the salt used is a chloride salt, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), then some of the chloride ions (Cl-) in the solution may also be oxidized at the anode to form chlorine gas.
    Therefore, the overall reaction for the electrolysis of salt water can be written as:
    2H2O (l) + 2Cl- (aq) → O2 (g) + 2H2 (g) + Cl2 (g)
    In this reaction, hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode, oxygen gas is produced at the anode, and chlorine gas may also be produced at the anode, depending on the type of salt used.

    Aside from the "chlorine-issue", that other people have mentioned, there is a safety issue.
    IF you generate pure hydrogen and oxygen, and those are mixed together, you basically got a potent explosive.
    So I feel this video is missing a safety warning of some sort, especially considering that the materials needed can easily be found by a bunch of kids watching youtube, and deciding they want to try it, not understanding the risks and necessary precautions.

    Putting salt water inside will give you hydrogen at the cathode and chlorine at the anode, not oxygen. There will also be a lot of “toxic” solid matter that will form in the container. If you’re looking to make oxyhydrogen (HHO) then you’d want to use a sodium hydroxide solution (Make sure you use high corrosion resistant materials like graphite/stainless steel for conductive parts and I’d use glass for the container.)

    Many people seem kinda confused here but the overall unbalanced reactions should be something like
    H2O + NaCl --> H2 + O2 +Cl2 + NaOH
    Some oxygen is also produced, at least i theorize so and it would be logical
    2H+ -O + Na+ -Cl --
    2Na + 2H2O ---> 2NaOH + H2
    Cl could also potencially reaction in solution to make NaOCl
    O (-2) is unstable so it will naturally reaction to forme O2 inmediatelly which is what happen in the oxidating electrode, note that this may also corrode it and well, oxidate the electrode itself (can be see with aluminium or iron)
    Chlorine is a bit less unstable than Oxygen but it since it is getting electrons, it will turn into Cl2, it happens with Oxygen as well
    Overall in theory electrolisis produces, Oxygen, Chlorine, Sodium Hydroxide and Hydrogen from Oxygen Hydroxide (My cursed way to say water)

    If you conduct an electrolysis experiment in salt water, you'll get Hydrogen and Oxygen, but you may also get Chlorine which is a health hazard, depending on the salt used.
    Electricity from the battery not only electrolyses the water, it also splits the salt particles into its respective components, which can then electrolyse the water further, but maybe cause health hazards in the process. Not to mention, adding salt to water increases the amount of ions in the water, increasing conductivity.
    If the salt used is a chlorine salt, then chlorine ions will form, causing a health hazard, especially if salt concentration is high or experiment is conducted for long periods of time.

      Perhaps the oxygen or chlorine evolved has oxidized the iron to iron(III), which reacts further with the water to form rust. Both are potent oxidizing agents.

      Iron oxide isn't conductive because its an ionic compound , this may reduce the charge floe, you also may just have a dead battery

      The electrolysis of seawater is accompanied by the release of gaseous products: hydrogen at the cathode, chlorine and oxygen at the anode. If the cathode (protected steel structure) and the anode (insoluble electrode) are isolated from the total volume of seawater, there is a steady flow of gas-saturated water in a limited volume directed from the bottom up, the effect of an electrolysis gas lift is observed.

    There is electric current because salt is conductive, however water is not conductive because it’s purified. Water from outside is conductive because there is minerals that are conductive in the water outside. To prove my point, put a 9 volt battery in filtered water with no salt, nothing will happen
