- Here we go! I’m taking the BMW Z3 and flipping the script with a rotary swap. This isn’t just about building a showpiece or a track car- it’s about pushing boundaries and building relationships. The BMW purists won't like it, but it's not for them... It's for us! So, If you’re up for doing it different, then this is your stop. In this video I outline what you can expect from this build including a track day in just a couple of weeks before pulling the stock engine out!

Well Sam, you've caught my attention! I've been driving BMWs of a number of models, even a Z3 but it wasn't mine. We've also had five RX7s (the last with a 13B) in the family. If you aren't careful, you're gonna have an awful lot of fun here!! I'm looking forward to following your progress from Northern California. 👍

RX7’s are really quite rare here in the UK
@@Sam_Proctor Well Sam, this wasn't quite the standard "modification" but my mother ran hers over a flooded little bridge in the early morning dark, on the way to work. My dad dragged it home behind his tractor and set a box fan in the seat with all the windows open and the rear hatch up. He let it run for about two days in the garage and it dried out adequately. The water had come up about 12" up the driver's seat back and he wasn't particularly pleased! My mother didn't want to talk about it. 🤣

Love a rotary, have had an RX8 and RX7 FD, great fun
Consider the rotating speeds of the diff and propshaft, may be fine spinning at double the RPM it was designed for 🤔
Good point! I’m likely going to go with the whole RX8 drive train
Some problems, the diff can’t handle that power. The 1.9 has the small case diff, you’ll need to swap to the 188, 2.8 diff. Even then, since it only has one mount, you need to reinforce the boot floor, or simply seam weld the diff mount, or add a second bolt on mount. The 2.8 has larger diff flanges and longer driveshafts with bigger bearings, you may need to swap to wide body. Which means wider rear arms. Definitely need poly bushes on the rear beam, which would need dropped to replace the diff anyway, so easy to do the bushes then.
If you do keep the standard arms it would be an idea to weld in reinforcements, available commercially if you don’t fancy making your own, though they’re easy.

buying a z3 next week for the same reason (they dont get modified much in the UK), Cant wait to see this with a 13B at a show

Honestly as someone who aspires to be different with car builds I really like this idea. Rotary engines are one of my favorite sounding engines and swapping it on a BMW platform is gonna be so nice. I’m excited to see this Miata on steroids rip!! 😂

cant wait to see how this swap goes. if your going for 400hp+ I would say turbo half bridge port and that would put you around 480hp. i would recommend for transmission a rx8 trans as they are generally built better and stronger than the ones that came in the rx7. as for what 13b do you have an idea?(as long as its not a 13b renesis out of a rx8 youll be fine.)
Thanks 🙌 yeah my research is taking me down the route of RX7 13bs but they’re proving few and far between here 🤦♂️ I can pick up an RX8 engine easy but like you say, I’d rather not. I’m tempted to pick up a whole car for the trans and could use the engine as a mockup
not the worst idea as rx8 engine dimensions are the same as a rx7 13b and getting a rx8 trans is definitely the way to go especially when it comes to the type of power you want to make. I'm not sure where you live but sourcing a engine where you are is probably pretty hard. (worst case scenario buy one straight from mazda but I wouldn't as new 13b Rew engines straight from mazda for 13k is not it.) I would say engine wise just keep looking for something used that can be rebuilt to a Bridgeport.@@Sam_Proctor

love the idea! thinking about getting a z3 in a couple years after I finish uni.. will it still be worth getting one then? will they be too outdated? i love the car but understand it's going to be 25+ years old so have some worries about the maintenance although i really love the car
Thanks! Love that you’re into Z3’s 🙌 it’s really a case of finding a well kept one if you want it to last and run well. Just had mine on track today (video soon!) and didn’t miss a beat. It’s been serviced, had a new thermostat & radiator etc in the last year or so (all not expensive parts) plus decent coilovers, bigger brakes and wider wheels with a good set of tyres. I was really impressed with how well it handled.
