  • In November 2018, a joint U.S.-Afghan force conducted an operation in Nimroz Province, in South-Western Afghanistan. The force was predominantly made up of U.S. Rangers from the 2nd Battalion, the 75th Ranger Regiment. Although the operation started off as planned, a series of developments saw a change of objectives in the middle of the mission. In addition, a small incident during the clearance of a compound would ultimately prove costly.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Leandro Jasso & Maiko. Rangers Lead The Way!

Friendly fire is a more common cause for American casualties than we tend to believe. While I was on Operation Just Cause, we lost several members of our company to friendly fire. The enemy we engaged were wearing the same woodland BDUs as we were, making it difficult and confusing to determine friend from foe... especially during a heated firefight. Sgt. Jasso death could have been avoided had the Afghan forces been better trained. But knowing command, they were under pressure to involve them before they were 100%. The pressure probably originated from some overzealous congressmen who was up for reelection, creating a facade they were doing their job. It's very unfortunate and sad what happened to Sgt. Jasso. My condolences goes out to his family. I also feel terrible for the heroic dog Maiko. I bet he was an awesome K9 scout. I salute both for their service and sacrifice!

I wonder where the bullet struck Jasso for it to become fatal? American SOF have plates rated to LvL 4+ so it had to somewhere above the plates or at his sides.

With a lot of PCs that are run, at least from what I know, the coverage is low and only usually front/back with side plates optional to lower weight and lower temperature. They don't make you that bulletproof.

Photos included in the investigation showed that a single 5.56 mm bullet was pulled from the left side plate pouch of Jasso’s body armor.

I call absolute bull on it being accidental. With no one else in that room to witness besides confiriming the muzzle flash. This sounds like one of DOZENS of purposeful betrayals on their part. It was the perfect opportunity to do so.

What do you expect from no training Afghans? Jasso was covering the escape and while they were taking fire, under stress one of the Afghans turned back while running and shot at the insurgents without thinking it would hit Jasso.
