Building a Composting Toilet with a Urine Diverter. Much Better Than A One Bucket Dry Toilet.

  • Our new toilet with a urine diverter is a major improvement! We've been using a Luggable Loo from Canadian Tire for several weeks, which is essentially a small plastic seat on a 5 gallon bucket. Everything ends up in the same place which can cause some unpleasant odours, and adding a scoop of cover material after every use fills up the one bucket system very quickly. It's been better than nothing at all, and for an overnight camping trip it would be ideal, but it's not really practical for extended use by three adults. Until we have our house built and a new septic system installed to use regular flushing toilets, some kind of dry toilet system is required.
This build with a solid frame, urine diverter and separate containers for liquids and solids is much better. We will make another video later on with a full review - but we are definitely happier with this upgrade! The diverter unit is from thronecompostingtoilet.com and we purchased an elongated wood seat on Amazon. amzn.to/3fC3s4d
He didn't follow the provided plans exactly, but used them as a guideline using the scrap yellow cedar and plywood we had on hand, and the full size template to trace was super helpful. We also watched the demo video on their website. We use an old 5 gallon paint bucket for the solids, and a plastic kitty litter jug with a funnel for the liquids. Pine shavings are used as a cover material after each "deposit", and I've been burying the contents after each weekend working on the property in a shallow pit that also contains our food waste to compost.

I like the design round shape would it hold a heavy person?

If I remember correctly, the suggested max weight was 225 lbs if you build this according to their plans. It would likely hold more weight with additional support pieces placed closer together like we did, although we haven't tested it to see how much more weight it can handle.

Yes, we purchased the diverter and it came with a full sized cut out template for the top piece that it sits in. (and the botttom.) Plans/instructions for the rest of it. thronecompostingtoilet.com
