- Still on the "Stupid Little Projects" that take all the time - we're making grilles. I can't buy the grilles I want and anything in the used market is...well, used. So I'm at it again with hammer forming using some fun techniques to get this first part of the project done.

When that video finished it must have switched over to the next vid in my playlist which was your video and I thought I was commenting on the one I just watched. You're an inspiration to the "everyman". I don't know if I'll ever try my hand at half the stuff you accomplish with style, but it's good to know that anybody with some decent skills and a ton of patience and motivation can accomplish beautiful work.

Love the content man; I stumbled across your channel because I started dabbling in fiberglass a year ago, and it's nice to watch videos of people doing composites start to finish.

In a true serendipities moment, Im experimenting with air hammers at the moment.
They are so powerful creative wise.
Im focussing on steel tooling.
Im also toying with hydraulic presses and dies.
Recreating days past isn't easy.
They do hit very hard - even the rivet gun I'm using hits harder than is needed.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Have you tried an air gun? I have always read that the rivet gun is the preferred tool for hammer forming but I'm not sure if I want to drop the money on one if my air hammer could at least get the job done.
@@lobrow7661 yes, I've used an air gun...the riveter is much nicer to use. It's a lot easier to control. I got mine used on ebay for $100.

Nice, that's the OG part you're going with on yours is my favorite style of grille the 122 had. I'm always going back and forth if I want to go with the 1972 aluminum grille on my 145 or keep with the egg crate plastic since it's actually a 73
Yup, it's a two year back date, but purists will have issues with this car either way. 😆

I use a product called Ram Board for making templates, it's cheap, strong and you get a lot of it.
Works great - I just wish it was flat.
@ThrottleStopGarage a clothes iron works great for that, I'm always looking for something else to try out though

"It's 30 degrees in here, I'm dripping." Meanwhile I'm in my shop in Texas at 43 degrees and opining how it isn't that bad today.
It's all relative...I normally work with the shop at 13 degrees.
Minnesotan here. 30 C is tolerable outside if it's not humid, but inside the garage, well, I'll finish the project another another day. The dehumidifier has been my friend...
This morning it was 90% humidity on my ride to work. Thankfully not 30 on top of that.

Your dedication to the task is impressive. I like your iterative approach in learning to do the unknown. I also think that the final product will look great. You didn't think to change the shape for a point of difference from the original or to make the process easier? I get the feeling that tipping those flanges back might prove to be quite a challenge, well that's from where I sit in my sofa at the bottom of the globe. Either way I'm enjoying the content and I wish you well.

@@ThrottleStopGarage when you do finally get it done, you should consider bringing it down to Minnesota for our annual Intermarque car show. We had a few Borgwards this year, so the variety is pretty great. People would lose their minds seeing this (when it's ready)
I love the meticulousness. Have you prefilmed episodes 2+3?, Wouldn't be surprised if after all the work, you'll find a little blemish that no one will see and start again! Which is awesome, because I can relate to that myself. Love this channel.
This one is working very close to real time. I've got some free days coming up and hope to get part 2 done soon.
Have you tried electroplating your 3D prints? Primer, nickel paint, copper plating, chrome plating
No, haven't looked into it at all. There has to be a VPD process to do this but at low volume?
@@ThrottleStopGarage VPD sounds pretty complex for just a few parts.

Do you think it was made like that and cut (to improve fitment, you say) at the factory? Or did they buy kilometers of straight "roll molded conduit" (not a native, I can't think of a proper way of calling that) that they bent (the four large radius bends), leaving the two ends facing each other.
To me, the latter sounds a lot more likely
For sure straight material and a die to shape and bend the profile. In aluminum (that's what the stock is made from)... it's easy compared to stainless steel.
Did you ever consider making the trim out of carbon fiber; and then have it chromed? I know the process of spraying a copper coating to metalize non-ferous surfaces has improved a lot recently.
Yes, but that sort of process is not available anywhere I can access. I'm happy with the result so far, even with the work.
Thats great job, again. About turning the flance's, how about just simple hand tool. I learn it from Per the Metal Man Sweden, any piece of round stock (pref. hard one) cut a slot with thin cut wheel and make a piece of tube and tube clamp as a deep stop. Then just go around the work piece with small bend at a time. I got one in my IG. I can tag you kn so you can get a look.
I miss his channel a lot...it had the best metal shaping content. I normally use a small adjustable wrench. I'm working on turning the flange now and it's working.

Yeah, your channel is an awful lot like real life. But you still seem to be making more progress than me! I was stuck for a couple months fighting a very unglamorous battle against my CAM software and my CNC router and computer controller. I think I won. But I'm not sure. Fingers crossed!
I do try to keep it real. It's not easy when your working full-time.

Im only 2:40 in and I have to say... Aluminium is impossible to chrome plate that lasts.
Please don't put down that person that helped you, even though he might of failed.
Sorry -finding a good chrome plater has been a challenge. I'm sure others have faced the same challenge. Getting the hefty bill and finding out that some parts were not done, others poorly done. It's all part of the challenge to getting quality work.

Maybe don't give your videos an overall negative vibe start before you get too the real good stuff.
Constructive criticism
Understood - but this is part of the story of this car. I can't be neutral when someone willfully damages your pride and joy and doesn't take responsibility. It goes some of the way to explaining why the car is in the garage in the first place. It wasn't meant to be negative, just an explanation.
By the by... those gorgeous grills remind me of very nice port holes for a sailboat. But stainless steel portholes and parts would dictate a vessel made for exploration of the North or south poles. Ice bergs suck, especially in the dark....
LOL - invoking the Titanic strikes a little close to home.
Does anyone make stainless dodgy panels for cars? A search on the internet doesn't show much, other than screws and washers, etc. Why wouldn't aftermarket companies make something like a floorpan for a vw bug from stainless steel?
Not that I'm aware of - it's not an easy material to work with compared to mild steel. Stainless also has some not so desirable properties in structural applications.
