Nice work with the dull chisel!
You never know what will work.
Gold !!!
Looking sweet!
Thanks!
Nothing is done half assed. I love that about your work😄 cool with the TOT references😉
Thanks - it's been a fun build so far.
Ferrari Light Yellow (FLY) would look pretty sharp and also brighten up your shop at the same time. 😃
My shop sure could use a little less clutter and a little more light.
G'day from West Australia, my father used to tell me a thinking man's colour is yellow.
Dad was a second gen Engineer.
I AM of course guilty of following in his footsteps steps, alas 3rd gen, and agree, allow actually does get me thinking.
Having several different colors in my wshop.
Always get an answer come to me for current challenge, while standing next to yellow painted equipment.
Get angry with challenges while beside red equipment.
Get soooo mellow beside blue equipment that the challenge falls away coz I simply want to have a nap.
And so on with orange, green etcetera etcetera.
Like your English wheel design and build by the way😉🙂👍👍
Happy New Year from Western Canada! The right colour of yellow would be a nice addition. Your Dad was wise - red is the wrong colour, no doubt. Green, light yellow, silver (if the right tone) all are options. I just don't like black tools.
@@ThrottleStopGarage black tools are just plain evil🙂
Golden Yellow is the one I use.
Very rich yellow in my humble opinion.😉👍👍
Nice Volvo Amazon you got on your t-shirt ! Swedish car rock !
That's the car I'm building! Great car.
Great attention to detail, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Red! Powder coat it red!
Red! It would stand out in the shop!
Black can be just fine if you add some kind of bronze outline and/or variation of Throttle Stop Garage logo.
I guess - I'm just not a fan of black machines. No really good reason.
Old timey textured gold, Industrial green attachments and polished hardware.
Interesting...I like polishing things.
Steel grey or clear as the bright steel finish looks great. Also I love your chissels they look very time saving! LOL
Very sharp if you get it just right! Steel grey - I like that idea.
At first i thought the chisel thing might be an editing gag like the hockey stick, but it seems real!? Amazing.
"2 minutes for slashing." Very funny.
One of my most frequent penalties!
Been looking everywhere for one of those fancy-pants cold chisels Throttle.......lol! Hope you have a nice 2022, Cheers, Doug
Thanks, you too!
Looking good. Thanks for the 3D model! I vote you PC it in mint green like the 40's/50's crackle finish machines.
Nice - I like the vintage look.
Yellow with black lettering, What fantastic build, I can't wait to see the end result,I may have to build one based on your design!
Let me use it first and see if it works. Happy to share plans when I know it's not garbage.
Awesome talent
Thank you so much 😀
Hammered green.
Hammered finished seem to be winning the votes.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I have six cans if you want them. Bought them for a project I probably won't finish and they are hard to find at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. Of course, shipping hazmat to CA probably isn't economical.
@@forthwithtx5852 Thanks for the offer - I'm just sanding out the scratches and should move this thing out of the garage this week or early next to get coated. I like the hammered idea as it will hide how unstraight the sides of the tube are.
Since I cut the cable on main stream media and switched to RUclips videos I now realize that I should’ve done this a long time ago. I found this channel and subscribed to it because you do a great job with your videos and the content is easy to follow and presented very well. Good job and keep making videos!
Thanks - I'm happy that you're enjoying the work. I like learning new things and it's fun to share.
Thanks for sharing, very good explanation and easy to follow along with. I look forward to the next videos 👍
Thanks - I hope people will find it useful.
Nice job as usual keep up the great videos!
Thanks again!
Coming along nicely. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Awesome! Thank you! Still a bunch of details to go but I'm hoping to complete the bulk of the work this week.
A man obsessed with details, oh that OCD
I do what I can...
Great work! Paint the blue from the doors you had on the car when you started showing it on RUclips. Thanks for sharing.
Several votes for that colour. We'll see.
Nice fabrication!!! I think red with Grey accents, or orange with grey or black accent pieces
Hmmm, I had not considered accent pieces. Good idea.
I have always liked the old machines that were done in green with all the gold pin stripping and gold leaf. It seems they took a lot of pride in what they built. It's a very classic look. I enjoy watching your videos. You and I suffer from the same affliction.......perfectionism, it's such a curse. lol Have a great New Year.
Thanks - appreciated. Green, I like the idea.
I love the precision and the because it's yours attitude to doing it, very educational and enjoyable. I' can't stop thinking it's overkill though and that shouldn't put people trying to build one as the roller alignment can and should be done at the rollers. Just wanted to say that and thought it may be worth you mentioning it. Great work though.
Most things I do are in the "overkill" pile I'm afraid! Honestly, I hope people can get a little inspiration from my perspiration. The next episode should wrap it up and hopefully get a little steel flowing.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I've nothing against overkill, I love your builds and it undoubtedly inspires people, me included. I just felt I needed to mention that. Cheers, looking forward to the next part.
Incredible year of content! Such great work. Happy new year.... And i am seeing an off white powder coat... Like an old porsche.. A dark red highlight somewhere... With black gunmetal moving parts... In short the most ridiculously beautiful tool ever. 😜. Cant wait to see what it makes.
This colour scheme sounds very pretty. Working on the last details this week - should be out for powder next week.
Paint it bruised fingernail blueish-purple... hopefully you don't get any fingers in it, looking awesome
I hope so too - we're going to have some fun learning what it will do.
@@ThrottleStopGarage if I didn't have this pesky day job, I'd love to try alot of these things. I'm coming into my "slow time" that is usually offset with holiday get togethers but I'm slowly get a few things done in the shop. If you ever make it to Southern Minnesota, you should swing by.
@@AndyFromm I hear you - my day job has delayed this project by at least a year due to COVID. Still too young to retire...which is about the last thing I'm too young for these days. I love Minnesota - had cousins in Duluth.
@@ThrottleStopGarage the wife and I go to Duluth ever once in a while, she likes that area.
Great video and explanation! My vote is for a maple leaf red with the Canadian flag in a prominent place. 👍
Interesting idea.
Nice addition to any shop indeed! I like purple! 🤷🏻♂️
I had a purple truck once...it was a lot of fun.
Colour, paint it your favorite that way you will never hate it years down the track.
Scribing around corners, I always use 90° square offset the squares thickness from the line and then butt your 45° square up to it... perfect every time.
Great tip. As long as it's not black - I really can't see it being black.
This Old Tony and Super Fast Matt and BOM in the house! Craig, I have to keep editing this post as you add more and more references, haha! We watch the same U tubes.
I had no doubt Alan...I love TOT - probably the best on the platform. Super Fast Matt is a guilty obsession as well.
@@ThrottleStopGarage no guilty about it!
hot pink
My eyes!!!
Drops of cold rolled "billets" work just as well as 1-2-3 blocks , those triangle magnets are just as useful for edge referencing . Sorry to load your comment section , just been "fabbin" since 1972 .
Yup - on my list for the next time I'm in the big city and don't have to buy 10' at a time!
Funny how RUclips works, I have been watching a the revival of the Ranalah English Wheel on Dominic Chineas channel (It's a cast version, well worth watching start to end) then yesterday a fabricated version from two plates and then your tubular version. Very good solution. I hope it works well. Best of luck. Green for me!!
Thanks - yes, the algorithm does pick off what you're watching and feeds you more!
@@ThrottleStopGarage The other channel was Autolux resto an Australian garage. Dominic's cast version was done in the UK, you are in the states ... and I am watching from Spain. Good luck
@@davidberlanny3308 I'm Canadian. I'll have a look at the others. Thanks for the heads-up.
You can (with some very good precision) "adjust" the weldment by torch heating a "dot" in various places to make that tube move where ever you want . By adding clamp force while heating , you can move a weldment 10 degrees or more.
Hoping this won't be needed!
You're a fan of This Old Tony huh? I see his influence in your editing.
ToT is a legend.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I see you also like BOM with that funky tune. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, "all hail the algorithm".
Craig, I can't believe I'm late to the party again. Sorry. My YT time has been somewhat limited during these holidays, especially as I've been in front of Fusion 360 detailing a new shed I need to build to make room for the English Wheel I'm now building ..... all thanks to you. Talked to Hoosier Profiles late last week and the anvils I ordered just got back from heat treat. So I should be receiving the wheel kit in another week or so. Excellent detailed description on welding up the frame. Loved the machinist trolling too 🤣😂🤣. Powder coat color? My vote is the same color you're going to paint the car, or a classic tool grey with black and gold pinstriping to match your logo 👍👍😎👍👍 All the best to you in 2022
Excellent - glad to hear they were able to get your wheels done. I've got the yoke almost done...just waiting on a few parts (always). Tool grey - I could see that.
Powerfist blue.
For sure nope...but it made me laugh. Cover it with powerfist stickers that have fallen off other equipment and place a few welds beside the joins. LOL.
Hammertone grey!
Looking at options now.
Powdercoat? Red and white, of course!
This has me thinking...
I have that problem frequently. I have found a place that is a recycler but has " new " steel just with a bit of surface rust . I am able to buy just what I want on many items but some I have to buy a whole stick . The prices are WAY better and the steel is perfectly acceptable.
I've got three places that I can buy steel at reasonable prices. All have gone to the 10' rule. I'm going to have that 3/8" X 6" for at least a decade!
Silver vein powder coat.
First vote!
mine is medium dark green in looks quite nice
I wonder if they do that in a textured finish.
Blue, with white pin stripping.
That would be a cool look.
powder coat light mint green like the old machines with small bits of metal flakes and then pin stripes 👌😂
That would be really cool. I wish I knew someone that could do old school pin stripes.
@@ThrottleStopGarage get a sticker reversed template and paint then remove it to have the nice crisp lines 😁👌i am from ireland so not many into pin stripe so thats how i did my tool chest 😅
Don't powder coat it, it looks shit when it gets chipped. Brush it Pacific blue Hammertone, you can touch it up and you can't see the touch up. That's my go to colour for workshop equipment.
I was hoping that this wouldn't see that sort of rough service. I'll look up the blue hammer tone.
Tig tack…. Brodie subscriber by chance? I like your tips!
Thanks - nope...I'll have to look him up.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Paul Brodie…. Fellow Canadian. Motorcycles, bicycles and machining.
Neon Green/yellow
Hard to lose it!
Yellow
Went for blue.
Blue like the tool boxes might look good but you might also consider testing out a color you might use for the volvo to see if your appreciation of it ages well.
I like the idea. I'm not sure the powder guys will have the exact colour. Maybe something close would be fine.
Fluorescent Pink Powder Coat
LOL...you'd never miss it in the shop!
English racing green
I could for sure see that.
go to metal supermarket you can buy in any length you want.
Closest one is 5 hours round trip drive for me. I may host a summer garage steel over-stock clearance sale.
I like a lot of the suggestions, but I think a clear would be awesome. Really show off that this was made by hand. You could also probably do some cool stuff with intentionally giving it a bit of a patina, chemically, first. I've seen some bicycles and motorcycles made with this idea and it looks super slick.
It needs some texture to not draw attention to the wavy nature of the tube.
Great informative content as always. Can I suggest if you have time and reasonable temps for removing Mill scale put the steel in a bath of distilled white vinegar overnight. Michael cathullu of big giant swords fame uses vinegar to remove the milk scale from the hardox he uses
I have used that before on the welding table fixture project. It's -30º C right now...so there's no way for that to work!
If you run out of space to stash that, bring it on over here.
May I swing by and measure your wheel?
@@ThrottleStopGarage Come over tomorrow.
Same colour you are going to paint the Volvo!
One of colours that I have on that list is an industrial colour used on dumpsters. So I guess the powder guys could work it out.
Pro Tip! If you sharpen your hockey stick a bit more, you’d have to spend less time tuning up those cuts.
I'm blaming the Koho...it was only ever my back up stick.
Yellow would be cool!
I would think the most neutral color to reduce eye strain and fixation would be the choice I would go after. So my personal choice would be a light gray. Boring I know, but if you're going to stand there for extended periods you'll understand. I already know without doubt you'll research the matter.
Light grey is in the mix - no doubt. If I can find the right industrial colour and texture. I don't want it shiny.
Colour yep I'm English. spell checker is so colonial!!! I think best would be RED Oxide as my choice. Not so sure powder coat is the best way simply it will be chipped and abused at least a spray/painted finish can easily and readily be maintained or serviced
I know - it's hard when your spell check makes these mistakes all the time. Powder has always been pretty durable - I'm not sure the frame would see much "hard" use.
I thought it was just Mini's that were full of Funk...
Oh, they just think they're all about the funk.
Now the hard part. How to get a wheel set without spending more than you could buy a finished English Wheel for. Wheels, bearings, hardening, axle shafts... Please go into detail on these areas. Thanks.
Will do...it was a bit of an epic to get the wheels. I had to collect them over years as funds were available.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Thanks. That's what I thought... No easy way around the anvils I guess.
White. (Just to be different.)
Too clean, but an off-white maybe.
The same gold as in your logo.
I am the algorithm, muahahaha! 😁😉🙃
And finally we meet.
When transferring your line around the corner why not use one of those aluminum framing squares instead of eyeballing a combination square ? I've done quite a bit of this when mitering 10 gauge bullet proof door frames .
The lip on my speed square isn't long enough. This trick has always worked fast.
Great video! Had me pausing every 5 minutes to add tools to my Amazon list. For the wheel I'm building (of similar but different design) I noticed the plan would be possible to build as an O-shape instead of a C-shape and then cut the gap out later on my band saw. That would guarantee the ends of the C align as they will have started as one long tube. On the other hand if there were internal stresses after welding, I wouldn't know until it goes "sproing!" after cutting the gap open. Not sure which is more likely (that it holds alignment, or springs apart crooked) - what do you think? Good idea or bad idea?
It might also spring back from the release of the various tensions induced when welding. Alignment is a slotted hole.
What camera do you use to film? Looks great
My first effort at 4K! The video lapse is from my GoPro 9 Black. The other parts are from my Lumix G7 - I had not worked on the settings until I decided to shoot 4K. I did a ton of testing so that my videos should look better going forward. For the arc shots - that's the Lumix - but I had to work the settings out manually. It took a few hours but with the ND1000 filter and aperture and shutter settings dialled in (5.6 and 1/60 sec) was about right. It's close distance work and fun if you have the time.
@@ThrottleStopGarage it all turned out great. Thanks for the specs!
Where is the centred bench from ?
The welding table is one that I built...there's a video on how I made it.
Well I guess it’s enough metal to shake a stick at..
Well a Koho anyway!
Got a good laugh at your special "chisel-ator" cut off tool...
It works great!
Husqvarna Orange
My neighbour painted his Model T this colour.
@@ThrottleStopGarage I buy rattle cans at Lowes. I think they call it Farm Implement Orange
Orange
Oh, we have a second vote for orange!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👍
Powder coat it Volvo Horizon Blue
Now looking up this colour.
Realize this is a old thread but how much expense ? I bought one new for 1100$ and no work outside of trueing wheels
Not cheap - about $2K. I've seen the less expensive wheels. Put a dial indicator on it and apply a force like I did, there is a difference.
I admire your precision, but I am curious how this imperfect World affects you.!?
As someone who has built an English Wheel in Coaldale…I foresee a problem in your future.
What's the problem?
I laugh a lot. It's hard not to see things - but it doesn't bother me.
I’ll wait and see….I spent a lot of time with my design too….
@@Rubberdown101 I'm dying to know what the problem you foresee in my future? Aside from not knowing how to use the wheel - if there is something you see...please share.
