This clip is funny because Ann Miller didn't need doubling, she was a very good singer actress and outstanding dancer.

I know this was just part of the plot of the movie, but in reality, Ann Miler had a terrific voice. And it’s no wonder they chose Frances Langford to dub her, because she is one of the best singers of that entire era!
My late dad had the pleasure of hearing Frances Langford in person in Australia in 1942 when she was traveling with Bob Hope's USO troupe and they entertained the RAAF hospital when he was recovering from malaria--

Of course, in real life, Ann Miller needed no dubbing! Her voice was beautiful and versatile.

Ok, only being in my forties (but loving these videos), I'm confused. It appears this was one of the earlier versions of what I know to be "lip syncing" (ala Millie Vanillie and so many superbowl halftimes...), but going even a step farther and dubbing in another singer's voice! Was this a common practice? Was the audience/viewers made aware of this in advance or after? Was it widely acceptable? Am I the only one that is shocked Hollywood showed this video back then? I appreciate the honesty, but this is a foreign concept this modern American isn't used to... help?
It's all for the sake of the plot. It's one of those movies where the poor heroine has to pay her dues by singing for someone else. It's a common plot device - Have you seen Singing in the Rain? Cyrano? Commedia del'arte?
This isn't how it is done in real life, where there is a track piped into the studio the actor can match. Even to this day when a performer's own singing voice is heard on film, they sync to their own voice on a recording. You hardly ever sing directly onto a soundtrack because the quality can't be controlled. In Italy, they traditionally have dubbed the entire soundtrack, including dialogue. Performers have always had to repeat there performance vocally in post production, though that has recently changed. Watch some movies and you'll see what I mean.
Interesting early demonstration of common technical gimmick of filmmaking that most of us never get to see in action. Langford was gorgeous, and also quite a dancer. Why would she ever have to dub for anyone else.
It's the plot point. She never dubbed for anyone else.
