      At least, the last one in their lifetime as a regular band - the three songs (including "Darlene") that were set apart and slated for release as an EP in early 1979 but then shelved, surfaced on the "Coda" album in 1982 instead.

    It's funny, as a drummer, Carouselambra is one of my favorites. I listen to videos of the isolated drums a lot.😅
    Sad though that I'm Gonna Crawl is the last song Bonham recorded before he died, and prophetic the way his drums fade out so softly.

    If the keyboards felt dominant in this album it was because Page and Bonzo were struggling with heroin and alcohol addictions, respectively. And John Bonham would sadly pass a year later. Those two would come in late to the recordings and Plant and Jones took the reins. The album is regarded as their weakest while they were together but there are gems in there. Thanks for the reaction!

    • @Bristolcentaurus
      @Bristolcentaurus 2 месяца назад +2

      disagree it MIGHT be Pages weakest album from a virtuosity view point but his work fits with all the rest, there are a couple of production points that Robert quibbles about but Roberts lyrics are right up there, despite his problems Bonzo's drums are right up there (where does fool in the rain rank in the Bonham arsenal?) and JPJ is in a world of his own - the album is different and people hate change I say they are missing out - is it better than Big Log / Principle of Moments?

      “is viewed” by whom? from the simple JP+JB hard rock disciples, i.e. JP+JB fans, who particularly loved the repeating riffs and uniform pounding on PG+Pr, this military sound.
      Carou was a brilliant experimental 80s song, I'm Crawl a blues gem, All My Love you just have to love (background), In The Evening is hard rock with good transitions, thank God, a good opener (also live played at my last LZ concert). The three “happy” songs, especially one after the other, weren’t my thing; I would have done without the hot dog (alternatives were on Coda).
      Fool is catchy; I'm somehow missing something like the song House Of The Holy. According to interviews, there are catchy songs that JP couldn't do much with✌.

    I found Zeppelin one through four to be my favorites. Hard driving blues/rock with a dash of acoustic masterpieces. I am not musically sophisticated enough to appreciate the jazzier elements in the later albums. Give me "Black Dog" or "When the Levee Breaks", at 120 db in a smoke-filled room over French horns and Cabernet anytime. I would love to see Verdy do a review of "Celebration Day", which is as close to seeing them live as you can today.

    So, you've now heard the final Zep album that was recorded by the band (Coda is an album of unreleased tracks released 2 years after Bonham died). Interesting to hear a reaction from someone that wasn't there when it was released. This album was not well received when released, probably due to the heavy keyboard presence and lack of dominant guitar. Page and Jones have said that they worked on the album during the day, and Page and Bonham came in at night to do their bits. As Plant and Jones did most of the writing and arranging the album has a stronger keyboard sound. Plant has said that the lyrics to Carouselambra were a plea to Page to get his act together (he was on some heavy drugs at the time).

    This album was more a JPJ & Plant production, they wrote & arranged everything, that’s why it’s more JPJ forward. It’s more keyboards, & not quite as much Page’s guitar solos, I believe JPJ did the editing etc. Yes Bonham & Page wanted to get back to their harder rock music. Sadly yes with not working in about 2 years, Page & Bonham getting more into their addictions, following the death of Plant’s son.
    All Of My Love, a beautiful tribute to Robert & Maureen’s son who passed away.

    It's not that the keyboard was so up front, but Robert's voice was down in the mix on most of these songs. He also uses a lot of reverb here. His voice was changing by now so I think he was trying to hide it.

    Glad they followed their weakest album (Presence) with this notable improvement. Fool in the Rain is a fuckin' sonic masterpiece. And All My Love is a beautiful memorial to Robert's son. It's amazing how good the guitar work and drums are considering how strung out Page and Bonham were. I mean the drums on FitR are copied by many. And the guitar solo is, imo, one of Page's best. Couple duds on this one, I agree, but it's got a more chill vibe overall.

    The weakest Zeppelin album. Jimmy is hardly even there,.JPJ is setting the tone.
    CODA is better.
