Thanks for this because now I feel better. I got my very first T just over a week ago, a sub adult Aphonopelma chalcodes. All she does is walk around the enclosure walls or just stand on the wall for hours. The substrate is bone dry, lots of it and well compacted. She has eaten which was awesome to watch. She doesn’t use her hide yet and stood in the corner eating. I watched the entire thing as I have time on my hands lol. Anyway, I was getting worried as I have heard that a T on the enclose walls is a sign of an unhappy T. I want my princess to be happy. I am positive I’ve done everything right so hopefully the little diva will come down soon and enjoy her home.
I'm totally going to go geeky fan girl, here. LOL. Wow! You have a true gift for making keeping T's an approachable, non-scary hobby. I learn a dozen plus things with every single video. Thank you for doing what you do!
I was SO freaked out for a while because one of my T's kept rubbing her butt so I thought she was impacted, turns out she was just grooming😭 Now i can just chill and know its cute
I am about to get my first avic sling and I cannot thank you enough for all of this information. It is making me a lot less nervous that I am going to do something wrong or hurt my new baby.
I’m new to the hobby and find myself anxiously googling everything my T does and a video of yours always comes up assuring me my baby is fine… SO THANK YOU!!! 🤍🕸️😭
I am very arachnophobic. Informational videos like these help me be less afraid. I can see the spiders in a controlled environment where there are little jumpscares and I can leave the video whenever I need to. I find it kind of cool that tarantulas will, like me, hole themselves up in their room when they're overwhelmed by sounds and lights and if they can't or don't want to, just curl in a ball of stress and hope it goes away. I also begin to feel like I'm dying if I go too long without food or water because I'm hypoglycemic.
#2, I recently captured a small brown / black spider. Not sure on the species, too small to tell yet. Black body, brown abdomen, thin legs, can climb acrylic, leaves web strands as it climbs. I spent over an hour just watching it explore the enclosure, methodically testing every corner. It'd climb up and stick a leg through the small gap where the lid slides closed, climb up and feel through each vent hole individually. Reminded me of that line from Jurassic Park "They test the fence systematically. Searching for weaknesses."
Fam just rehomed our sheep, I was joking about what animals we could get for the area we live in in place of sheep aside from more dogs and cats. I have no idea how but for some reason or another I joked about getting a tarantula. 1 Day later and I've watched at least 12 of your videos, I plan on finishing the new keeper playlist before I dive in. What started as a joke is something I'm now extremely interested in. Going to wait until I graduate in a few weeks but bless you for making this topic so approachable.
Love this video! Even though I knew about some of them, it's still wonderful to be reassured these things are all good, and a great heads up for other weirdness yet to come! :-)
Richard, Thank you for all the content. I've discovered you fairly recently and as I mentioned before I am strongly considering getting into the hobby. I thought about it in my high school days there just wasn't enough information available at that time to be a totally responsible keeper. I have learned so much in the last few days from species to products to proper care / husbandry. I am considering starting with a B. Himori or smithi. I'll be going to a reptile show later this summer and hope to see some awesome T's. Keep rocking the content brother, Peace!
Hey thanks for the vids man. I'm terrified of spiders but your videos are helping with that fear. To the point I'm considering getting a desert blonde. Thanks again man

Another good vid, Richard! I'm sure you might have seen my posts about some slings that looked death curl or some that have molted and not recovered, I realise now that maybe I'm more responsible than I realised. Panic set in and I couldn't stop picking up their enclosures to check on them. Ironically, the one I messed with most that people more seemed to think was dying is actually the only one of the three molting that survived, though she damaged her two back most legs but is aware and seems comfortable now I've learned to let her get on with it. Thanks again for the good vids!
@the Tarantula Collective this is an awesome video! I haven't seen anyone else who's made a video specifically about the weird things t's do, and it's definitely something that's going to provide much help and relief, especially to keepers who are new to the hobby. I still get a bit freaked out from time to time when my t's do things I haven't seen them do before, or things I wasn't expecting (and I've been keeping t's for a few years now) This was a much needed video and I just wanted to thank you for making it. You're an extremely valuable asset to the tarantula community, Richard! Keep up the great work! 🕷️❤️🕷️ EDIT: I have a question for you! Number 10 on the list (tapping/drumming) I've seen a few of my male t's do this, and I remember the first time I saw it, it didn't occur to me that they were drumming for a females attention (I thought they only did this when they were in the vicinity of a female as part of their mating ritual/activity) I didn't know they did it when they were alone in their enclosure. I've never seen a female t do this when they're alone though. Is this something that only male tarantulas will do, do you know? (When alone, I mean)
Hi Richard! This was a great video. Since I'm new to the hobby and found myself laughing as I recognized a lot of these behaviors that my own T's have done. And yes my a.chalcodes has blocked herself off in her tunnel for the last few weeks. But I figured out it was normal to this species. But in February I had no T's and now I have 6 and an amphibian. LOL. Oh almost forgot my t.albopilosus's egg sac gave me 100+ babies. From 0 to 100's in three months. I do have a question tho, I went to Repticon and heard from a breeder that with arboreal T's to use primarily vermiculite with peat moss. Mostly vermiculite. Just curious since I also bought a GBB sling and need to rehouse her. Let me know please. Want some curly hairs...😆 🤣 😂

This was a great video specially for beginners well done. Thank you for all you do.🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷
GOD BLESS
Im glad your a led zepplin fan like me
I'm totally going to go geeky fan girl, here. LOL. Wow! You have a true gift for making keeping T's an approachable, non-scary hobby. I learn a dozen plus things with every single video. Thank you for doing what you do!
Man you're a lifesaver, thank you so much for your videos
I was SO freaked out for a while because one of my T's kept rubbing her butt so I thought she was impacted, turns out she was just grooming😭 Now i can just chill and know its cute
I am about to get my first avic sling and I cannot thank you enough for all of this information. It is making me a lot less nervous that I am going to do something wrong or hurt my new baby.
I’m new to the hobby and find myself anxiously googling everything my T does and a video of yours always comes up assuring me my baby is fine… SO THANK YOU!!! 🤍🕸️😭
In so happy to hear that! And thank you for watching and leaving a positive comment.

Oldie, but a goodie!!! Thanks for the recap.
It's videos like this that helped me nurse my aphonopelma hentzi back to health from a terrible owner, thank you
Fam just rehomed our sheep, I was joking about what animals we could get for the area we live in in place of sheep aside from more dogs and cats.
Thank you so much for this video. It really helped relieve stress about my T's weird behavior 😊
Great job on this video man. I highly appreciated it as a new owner!! (GBB)
I love your giggle at the end of your vids it always makes me smile
Hey thanks for the vids man. I'm terrified of spiders but your videos are helping with that fear. To the point I'm considering getting a desert blonde. Thanks again man
Did you ever get one
Awesome video as always. Great choice of topic.
Hoping to get my first T for my birthday this June! I was told if I got a job to pay for the T and it’s enclosure I could have it so I did just that! They fascinate me
Wait , what ? If you gotta pay for it then uhmmmm , thats not for your b-day lol
@@whatsupchris Well I’m getting permission to get one for my birthday. My parents are arachnophobic lol
@@justinstrejc make em watch some of Richard's Tarantula Collective videos , The Dark Den and Exotic Lair . These 3 guys help take alot of peoples fear away . Good luck I hope they get you as many as you want . ✌🏽❤
This put me at ease some what I have a cobolt blue and I noticed it’s lost a leg randomly I mean it’s still fine wondering round and stuff and there’s nothing it can hurt itself on but this video put me at ease with the missing limb info and climbing round on the glass and roof ! Thanks dude
Such a good video! Thanks a lot! You helped to ease a lot of my future worries 👍
Great video!
I’m so glad I found your channel. I have been watching the past few days. I got my first T because of you! I was a snake guy but now I’m more of a tarantula guy now!! Still love my snakes tho! Lol.
EDIT: I have a question for you!
Loved the vid. I learned from the Oldtimers at another site. Didn't know about you yet. That's a vid that all newbies should watch.
The real 🐐.
