The PRO Photo Editing Step EVERYONE Needs to Know | Advanced Dodge and Burn Photoshop Tutorial

- I realised on a tuition call last week that there was no longer any reference anywhere on our RUclips channel to contouring which is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT STEP of any edit - Contouring is another way of saying Dodge and Burn and today, we're going to cover an advanced dodge and burn photoshop tutorial without touching the dodge or the burn tool. Legit.
This method was used in older Full Edits that used to exist on the RUclips channel. These are now inside the Premium Membership, you can learn more about that here: www.thattogspot.com/become-a-...
Dodge and burn has been a thing since film days when photographers worked this technique in the darkrooms. It came over to digital with the straight dodge and burn tools, but their use is destructive - it directly alters pixel data. Instead, we use a layered technique to apply the same theory in a non-destructive way.

Thank you for this great tip Jess! I actually already dodge and burn by using the tools for that. I will try this method next time for sure!
Hi Carlos, that's great. Thank you for the feedback 😊
Jess do you have a contour action available? I noticed you used it as an action in one of your amazing videos.
Fantastic Jess, thank you. I need to go and apply this to a current image so it beds in. I love D for DanDan, how could it be anything else LOL!

How do I find the way you dodge and burn in your technique?
Hi Jessica, just wondering about the light you have at the top of your screen :)
Hey Laynie, it's only there to record my screens, I don't use it when we are not shooting for you guys to see 😊
Is it ok to do this in lightroom with the masks if I need a quick edit? I photogrph horse competitions mostly and I dont have the time to edit in photoshop
Yeah this can also be done in Lightroom 😊
Painting white and black over a color image? Also, why opacity versus flow? This method lays the full white or black stroke with the very first stroke. Flow allows stroke-by-stroke gradual buildup, correct?
It’s not painting on the image, it’s painting on a grey layer set to overlay, so it darkens and adds contrast when black is painted onto it. We reach out opacity with this method instead of flow to control the strength more closely. Flow is buildable and for those just starting or inexperienced, it will end up way too harsh way too quickly - opacity safeguards it to a set level and applies it in a set strength all the time 🙌
Thank you. I’m confused. Doesn’t it do the same when you don’t add a gray overlay?
With flow at 100% you get the full amount available with one stroke. Opacity mutes it, but it can be more gentle to paint with 5% flow at 100% opacity, gradually building the effect.
Hey Jonas, we’ve discussed why opacity in another comment further down 😊
It is a good tutorial.
But I’ve been in photography a
While and I have to say, to the majority of people, they wouldn’t notice the difference whether you did this or not.
If they weren’t happy with a tack sharp photo of their dog, they won’t be happy with some minor dodge and burn adjustments.
Thanks! I like to think that we don’t create art just for the client, but also for ourselves and our portfolio too. If taking an extra 2 mins to dodge and burn takes us from ok to wow them I’m in 🤓
Arthur’s very cute 🥰
awww thank you ❤️ he really enjoyed himself!
Why describe a technique you don’t use? Strange
I use it on every photo, so I don't know what you're referencing? Strange!
@@ThatPhotographySpot No not the D&B technique you show in this video. @2:10 "we utilise a different technique" @2:20 "which I personally use now" your words
This is done 10000x easier in Lightroom using masks. Photoshop is SO unnecessary complicated.
however you cannot use blend modes in Lightroom 😊
@@ThatPhotographySpot No need for blend modes. You only want blend modes because Photoshop uses them and you don't know how to do it otherwise. Lightroom does it all. And a lot easier.
