  • What are the best and worst white pens? I bought and tested every white pen I could find so you don’t have to!
    I tested 23 white gel pens and paint markers in total to see which were the best white pens for drawing on black paper, and which were the best white ink on colored pencil, coloring pages, washi tape, Copic markers, Tombow markers, Sharpies, and gel pens.
    It’s the ultimate white marker comparison - and possibly the biggest white pen test ever!
    I found some new favorite white pens for my own art in the process, and hopefully my review will help you too.
    You can find the written version of my white pen reviews on my blog here, with links to purchase your favorites and a few extra notes from me since I filmed this video: sarahrenaeclark.com/best-and-...

      Sometimes I really like to sketch on colored paper instead of bright white, when I'm using a brown or black paper I really enjoy playing with my white pens instead of sticking with more traditional ink colors or pencil. And of course to add highlights to my colored pencil and marker drawings.

    I had no Idea there were this many white pens! My fAvorite is Posca PC-1M.1. It has an extra fine bullet point. The one you are using is slightly different. I haven't tried that one yet. One trick with any Posca pen is to shake it really well before you use it, every time. My second favorite is the Pentel milky pop gel pen.

      @@SarahRenaeClark Oil is easily absorbed by unsealed wood. On plastic or metal, it's more likely to rub off. I use Sharpie because it's affordable, but it's not perfect. Sometimes it's a struggle to find the right medium for your tools, and vice versa.

  • @tookitogo
    @tookitogo 2 года назад

    In my experience with paint pens, they often need a serious shaking at first. Especially if they’ve been stored vertically, it can require a lot more than just a few shakes. (They should be stored horizontally.) In those situations, you also may need to run them a bit longer to get the dense paint through the nib.

    I bought Gelly Rolls when I was in middle school and used nothing else. Since it was my first ever white pen I didn’t realize the faded white that they did on my pencil drawings could’ve been better. Not until I tried a Pentel pen one of my friends had. Shattered the entire little White Pen Bubble I had been living in.

    The gelly roll pens are very scartchy and are just ok. I used them for inktober. They are decent when you first get them but quickly deteriorate. Not really a huge fan. You also have to wait a little for the ink to really dry after you’ve used them for a little bit (like a week) they start to smudge the ink rather than sit on top if you dont wait like 15 - 20 minutes to apply on fresh ink.

    My favorite white pen is a Utilio white paint pen. After buying a Derwent Graphik pen that just leaked and oozed EVERYWHERE, I decided to try a different brand and hope for better luck. Japanese brands have rarely disappointed when it comes to art and stationary stuff, and these hold up that record. My only quibble is that if they get a bit dry, you have to give them a little dip in some water to get them started again but after that? Lovely, opaque white lines with little effort.

    Awesome review! Thank you -- I have the Uni-ball signo as well, but I've struggled at times using it on top of my colored pencils. Its a but funny to me though, my Uni-ball is significantly older compared to my regular black fine-liners that I buy much more frequently, perhaps time to purchase a new one on my end as well -- glad you mentioned that haha. Definitely going to give the hybrid gel DX a go, it seemed to do really well over the colored pencils and I'd like to see if it will layer at all over them.
    Are you still using the Deleter Neopiko as well? I've generally stayed away from paint pens because they can be so liquidy on the paper and usually dry out too quickly for me (I don't draw as often as I used to). Just wondering how that's held up for you over the past year.

      The thing about gel and even paint pens is that you have to be careful to not bump it with any part of your hand and give it plenty of time to dry. You might notice this with water-based or permanent alcohol-based colored markers too, although not as much time might be required. India ink on some black pens has dried fairly quickly for me.

      I think the uni-ball works great for a while, but when it starts to clog it gets hard to get it back to working smoothly again. It’s still one of my favorites, but maybe the Decorese is a better choice if you’re doing a lot on pencils.

    The white gel pen

  • @drBenyy
    @drBenyy 2 года назад +1

    I just wanna point out that all gel pens are horrible choice for colored pencils. The reason is that those pens are water based. Colored pencils are mostly oil based (even wax based are mix of oil and wax) which means that white gel pen WON’T stay on top of colored pencil for long. Water is heavier than oil and it will inevitably “disappear” below oily pencil layer. It’s probably ok for hobby drawing but not for anything that is supposed to last.

    You haven't featured it but let me put this here: the worst white pen in the history of humanity is PILOT SUPER COLOR - permanent type ink - extra fine. It literally functions as an ink discharger rather than a pen. You press it onto the paper and are left with a big blob of white ink. It is advised that you do this 3 to 4 times on a scrap paper until the ink starts to flow. But it never flows. AND it was 4 euros!!! Maybe I should just press all the ink to a cup and use it with a fountain pen lol kill me

    • @SarahRenaeClark
      @SarahRenaeClark  3 года назад

    Obviously, every time before using the uniposca pen, you have to shake it, to mix the paint inside the tank.
    Instead the first time after the purchase, after shaking it well, you also have to place the tip on a surface and press repeatedly to soak the tip with varnish, that's why it doesn't work well for you.
