    I’ve been reading a few comments about the longer version not adding anything important.
    I think the added scenes do and I was thrilled to see them added on an extended version DVD many years ago, which is standard nowadays on blu ray. After watching it on VHS and early DVD hundreds of times I was blown away by the added scenes on the newer extended DVD. Getting the blu ray was a no brainer.
    I realize that some newer sound effects and dialogue had to be used that differ from the original, but I don’t mind, as the extra visuals we received with the addition of the deleted scenes, and picture restoration make it worthwhile IMO.
    Whichever camp we are in, original vs newer extended, we can all agree that this movie is an important classic.

      I think the scene of Angel Eyes in the ruined fort/hospital is superb, and makes sense of his subsequent appearance at the prison camp. The scene with Tuco recruiting his bandit friends adds very little, and Walllach's voice wasn't quite up to it. I can take or leave the other bits. They are not essential.

    When I was a kid in the 60s this aling with the previous 2 films were stunning westerns. Totally different from all others. Today they are still my favorites. Would of enjoyed seeing Clint Eastwood's version of the spaghetti westerns. Sadly he opted out of presenting the public with his version of them.

    Over the years I’m guessing I’ve seen this movie 30-40 times and it’s just as good every time and often better. Eli Wallach gives what I feel is greatest performance ever. Just cinema at its best.

    I first saw GBU in the theater in 1968; as teenagers we wondered why so many names in the titles were Italian !!! So I've seen GBU many times, and quite a few times in theaters, the last being the restored version as part of United Artists 90th anniversary tour. Most of the "added" scenes reinforce the message of GBU as an anti-war film, show guys without arms, without legs, wounded/weak soldiers at the "fort" Angel Eyes visits, bodies just lying on the sides of the road upon departing the mission....

    • @adamzanzie
      @adamzanzie 2 года назад +2

      Some of that pain which Wallach felt might also be due to his inability to reconcile with Leone before Leone's death. They had a horrible falling-out during pre-production on "Duck, You Sucker", when Wallach gave up another commitment to make himself available for that film -- only for Leone to then suddenly give Wallach's role to Rod Steiger instead. Wallach threatened to sue Leone; Leone responded, "Get in line"; and they stopped speaking. Even after Leone's death, Wallach continued to be bitter about the issue until the 2000's, when he reopened his friendship with Leone's wife, not wanting to punish her for what happened.

    I'd no problems when Tuco pops up with his pals years before I saw the Grotto scene. I understood immediately. He's Mexican, Blondie deserted him, so he obviously recruits a bunch of his own kind to get revenge.
    The grotto scene is the one I'd have included in an initial movie release, I have to contradict myself lol.
    It's just a good scene. The novelty swearing is important for 1966.

    7:10 very interesting. to me, one of the most interesting elements of the Man with No Name is that he doesn't pursue women. for instance, in "For a Few Dollars More" he ignored the red-haired, busty landlady who obviously liked him. but now it appears that they actually did make a scene of him with a woman.

    I disagree. I think that the restored version provides a rich picture quality that looks even better on the blu-ray quality. The 1998 DVD release has nothing on this version.

  • @TheChequeredHorse1
    @TheChequeredHorse1 12 лет назад +11

    This restoration was a disaster. John Kirk & co. didn't need to strike a new print of the film to do the restoration, they simply could've scanned the Italian elements digitally and avoided the loss of quality inherent in the copying process. But no, because John Kirk doesn't believe in digital restoration (!?) he decided to go the manual route. The result is an image that is somewhat spotty and dark, and heavily cropped in comparison to its Italian counterpart. What a waste!

    the object of the art is the creators vision , what the director wanted is the one valuable thing , all melding and bending and cutting is a lessor thing . cut, print . longer is better ,because longer is the prime mover , we are lucky , they try to care specifically now . good deeds , adue!

    never liked american westerns and still don't. TUCO!

    The added scenes only slow the movie down. Only a few of them work with the pacing of the film but most don't. Also Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach's new voiceovers distract me everytime I hear them. It's nice to hear them again but it's obvious they have grown old and they sound nothing like they did back then.

    i agree with everyone saying these scenes are pointless they are they add nothing to the film at all like tuco hiring bandits it takes you out of the movie because that voice is elis voice that youd hear in making of features its not tucos voice and it adds noting oh its a continuity error they dont explain how hes suddenly with 3 guys who gives a fuck he hired them simple also one scene has some other guy speaking for clint it is soo distracting its like did a ghost posses blondie and change his voice another pointless fucking scene was lee van cleef going to a camp bribing some guy with beer for information thats the recurring theme with these scenes theyre pointless not every fucking thing needs an explanation

    in the cave scene with the 3 bandidos, tuco`s voice sounds different...higher...obviously added on years later. i think the film is better without this scene....we don`t have to know where tuco gets the 3 from...knowing tuco, he was well fit to enlist buddies from the past...still, a great achievement....and it seems tuco shouts `bastard `not `bitch `at the end.

Technically, Roma is the original version before studio execs demanded it be cut down for various audiences around the world.
