The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Italian: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo), is a 1966 Italian epic spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles.
Ennio Morricone composed the famous film score, including its main theme. It is the third and final film in the Dollars trilogy following A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965).
Leone was unable to find an actual cemetery for the Sad Hill shootout scene, so the Spanish pyrotechnics chief hired 250 Spanish soldiers to build one in Carazo near Salas de los Infantes, which they completed in two days.

An exceptional action packed western, with a very good story line, witty dialog, scenic vistas, great sound track, with outstanding performances by the leading namesake actors. A very gripping drama with the civil war as a backdrop. Everything came together in this film to create a movie that flat out grabs you from start to finish. A classic western if there ever was one.

I'll tell you what's weird. After the first scene or two, you almost block out the great music and focus on where things were filmed. Seeing this makes you think about time and how nature changes things. Things get lost in the past and mostly forgotten. And few will ever know what happened or what was once there.

Gosh , they spared no expense in set designing and went to remote desolate areas in Spain to shoot some scenes. The bridge area , last part of the movie , thousands of extra artists. Almost recreated war like situation.
Top work by Leone, simply his best. Oscar's should pin an academy award on him posthumously for his awesome contribution (unless they have not already) .

That's a really good video, I like how the camera was placed exactly where a lot of the scenes were filmed in the 1960s to see how the locations look now. It also looks like a lot of the structures in the movie are still intact to this day. The movie is definitely classic also.

Absolutely brilliant effort. This is amazing work, tribute to a legendary western if not the best. Ennio's very moving "The Ecstacy of Gold" at the end, was fantastic! The soundtrack to this film is a master piece.

August 2021, I just got back from Sad Hill, and thinking that you found the location before it got restored is amazing when I see how remote the location is. It's like lost in the middle of nowhere
I don't even know how you managed to find it in 2010, it's mindblowing

The location of Sad Hill cemetery has since been restored by volunteers. A documentary of the restoration was produced showing the history behind it's construction for the movie. An epic undertaking by members of the Spanish army. Today, such a location would probably be created in a complex computer 3D program.

Several thoughts come to my mind after watching this. First, how that soundtrack didn't win any awards is beyond me as well as the cinematography. Second, this shows how much vision these directors had to create these sets out of virtually nothing but rocks, dirt and river banks. Third, not even these seemingly remote locations are immune to development. Fourth, I can't believe an entire cemetery was created around a crusty dirt circle just for the movie. Finally, kudos to Señor Attia for hunting down these locations and creating this documentary. Great job!
By the way, the opening scene of Angel Eyes gunning down the boy coming in to help his father still sends chills up my spine, and I've seen this movie at least 10 times. It's something I don't think was ever shown on film up to that point and something that's rarely shown, even today.

@Dracarys I'm well aware of why they didn't consider the movies at the time but in hindsight I believe many people in the movie industry would agree this movie deserved to nominated, at the very least, in a couple of categories. Being at the end of the western era had nothing to do with it. True Grit was made a couple of years after this and "Duke" won his only Oscar for it. I believe Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was at least nominated in a few categories.

In 2005 or 2006 I visited that location and there was a donkey and a dog near the "well" remnants, I still have some pictures. The cortijo was the same like in the movie and inhabitated by farmers at the time, then it was sold and renewed, today seems to be a sort of bed&breakfast. And the well has been rebuilt for the tourists.
