  • Since many have never played the Insane AI mod, I created a comparison video to show the difference with some examples (incl. a little trolling). XD

    The thing that always bothered me is how much noise the lockers make when you hide or get out of one. The WHOLE station should have heard that shit.

      Alot of horror games do that I don't get it
      If it was realistic the character would be opening and closing them as quietly as possible
      I also don't like how loud the regular doors are I feel like the ailen should be hearing them and go running as well. If I was there I'd be passing myself each time I walk by a door thinking it meant I was dead

      I got killed in a locker once, and immediately assumed it was because the locker noise is 199dB. Proceeded to avoid them throughout the rest of the playthrough.

      It’s called the menace gauge it governs when the Xenomorph will pursue you and when it will allow you to progress. Horror games are entertainment and if the Xenomorph is gunning for you constantly then people aren’t going to be enjoying the game.

      @@thedeepfriar745 The devs themselves have acknowledged that at one point during the development, they had a version where the alien was able to sniff you out anywhere and that it wasn't fun.

    The Xeno has a variety of sensors it'll use to detect you and the difficulty levels defines the threshold of each sensor activation before the Xeno properly reacts to it. Sound is one such sensor it uses, but at a distance, it doesn't use it to pinpoint you, it allows it to turn its attention to the disturbance and in most cases, go to where it last heard noise and examine the area. Sight (and touching the Xeno) are the two things that'll actually prompt it to kill you, with sight having a threshold that must be reached in order for the AI to rush you. That is, you have to stay in their sight for a certain period of time before it'll engage you. Again, difficulty decreases the time you have to remain in their sight before they'll engage you, but also consider that it'll take a bit longer at a distance, whereas the closer you are to it the faster it'll detect you. Nightmare difficulty makes the Xeno more aware of all its sensors and it'll also react quicker to them. What's more is that the Xeno will spend more time out in the environment as opposed to being up in the air-ducts.
    And important part to understand is that the Xeno's actions are dictated by a behavior tree, much of which is locked off at this stage of the game (which is the first real time you're in play with it). Different trees in it's behavior system get unlocked depending on your actions; for example if you keep evading it by hiding in lockers or vents, it'll eventually start randomly checking them but only after you've done this numerous times (or if saw you jump in one, or you made noise with your motion tracker out while hiding).
    Insane AI seems to just scrap all of that and make its visual sensor react immediately and at its maximum allowed distance. It seems to react much more aggressively to audio triggers as well. While probably more accurate to how the real Xeno would be, I feel it would be frustratingly tedious to play against, as Nightmare difficulty can get pretty tedious already. I wouldn't be surprised if the mod also unlocked all its behavior tree nodes right from the start too, just to really sell it. It's not something that I'd personally ever play with, but it's neat that people are using OpenCAge to make interesting stuff for this amazing game.

      I just watched the original film and the xenomorph was much more opportunistic and less aggressive. The one in Isolation is actually more terrifying because it hunts you through the station, while in "Alien" it waited in the engineering section of the Nostromo, picking off the crew one by one when they seperated themselves, but staying out of the inhabited parts of the ship.

      @@TigerofRobare Yeah, my only real MAIN complaint about the alien in Isolation is that it loudly stomps around like some tiny godzilla. If there's a mod out there that at the very least makes its footsteps much quieter, I wouldn't mind that. Maybe have it kill some of the lights in an area by ripping out the fixtures, or in a high-light zone have it crawl around instead of run around. They're nocturnal to begin with.

      What I hate about this game is that alien is walking openly instead of crawling ceilings and vents and attacking you from behind and above as it supposed to be according to movie logic. Devs totally got alien wrong and programmed it poorly, is there any way to change this behavior and make it a ceiling crawler that prefers to hunt you down in shadows with attack from above?

      There were so many objects and beds, alien was also looking straight in it's front, if it was realistic it wouldn't notice Ripley. 9:56 is pure nonsense. This mod is only if you want to suffer. If the original game was too forgiving then this is straight out bullshit. Something between original game and this mod would be alright.

      Absolutely disagree. IRL, in most circumstances the Xenomorph wouldn't be able to hear you taking small steps over the various sounds the ship makes and the ambient noise.

      Also wasn't the Xeno in Alien confined to almost one section only? It was like a snake more than a dog, it didn't run straight towards anything while being rabid, but stayed on dark areas and hunted prey when they were off-guard

      ​@@francomoreira4222 There's a popular theory (that I happen to find appealing) hat the xenomorph wasn't hunting them, it was actually terrified. Think of how they always say "animals are more scared of you than you are of them."
      In the original Alien - to be clear, this theory does not apply as well to the sequel (THERE WAS ONLY ONE), but that was a different circumstance - there's no sign given that the xenomorph is actively hunting the Nostromo's crew. It's retreating to dark places, sticking to the vents to move around, and only striking when someone is shooting around a flamethrower, or has it cornered in a room.
      Sure, this could be read as the actions of a hunter, but it could also be read as an animal scared shitless, lashing out in self-defense. It's no different from a snake striking because it believes you're a predator about to kill it, but otherwise trying to slither away and find a new hiding spot.
      Even at the very end, Ripley finds it's gone into the shuttle and has curled up in the walls. If it were trying to kill her, why would it do that? It has no way to know what the shuttle is, or that Ripley's going to be returning there, or that the Nostromo is about to explode. But the alarm systems are blaring, the red lights are flashing, and the shuttle seems to be the one place where it can be "safe" from all the cacophony.

      You are right. The save point is the same in MS5. And the behavior tree is at the beginning. And yet a big difference in the behavior of the alien

      In no way does the original AI learn from the player. It uses a branching system where it will unlock certain personality nodes when you hit or play certain parts of the game. There’s a whole video on how the original AI works and being “tailored” to the player is not one of them sorry lol.

      @@dangerzone9 in that very same video you referenced it is said that the Alien can unlock behavioural nodes from player stimulai. The thing you talked about was placed by the devs to ensure the Alien keeps up to some extend with the player in case they were basically too good.
      Edit: unless you are referencing the very first AI and Games video which might not have mentioned that information. But the 'remake', or 2nd part of it does

      I vividly remember a specific moment when I was playing it for the first time. I had just sounded the alarm and when I was running for the exit, I saw the Xeno drop right in front of me, lift a human enemy by the neck and eviscerate him while the alarms blared and the lights flashed red in a rhythm that was just enough to obscure part of the violence. That stuck with me because, to this day, I don't think I've ever felt more immersed in a video game than at that moment, even with VR games. It felt like a scene pulled straight from the film.

      Sometimes the tail catching on/tossing objects just looks goofy but in this case it really seemed like it was doing it on purpose, added great tension to the scene.

    While I think modding is a great thing for games and their communities, this is a pretty unfair comparison. The original AI uses a revolutionary new AI governor which aims to maximize tension and fun. The original xeno isn't stupid, it's deliberately not allowed to chase you the first time you see it. It absolutely will try to kill you later on.

      Yeah, that’s why I kind of developed into losing a fear later on, though that may just be because I was trying to beat the game before I go to sleep, and it just kept on going.

    The issue is time. If you play with crazy AI, you will spend soooo much time hiding that the gameplay time will double. To most players, that's too long, and after hiding for hours on end, some would just find it boring and stop playing.....unless you love this kind of thing.

      @@smokingcrab2290 I had a blast the first time I played it but on my second run-through I felt exactly as you did. I knew what to expect and took more chances, died, and eventually got bored by the tedium of having to hide all the time, and never finished the second play. This game is a masterclass in suspense and tension though, even just for the once through.

      Closest thing I think of is the first Dino Crisis. Being stalked by an unkillable T-Rex and raptors making you think they're one step ahead really gives off feelings of extreme dread and anxiety. It's an old PS1 game and is in desperate need of a remake!

    Since you're trying to make the game scary and atmospheric, you have to not kill the player every few seconds, or it becomes a video game and not a horror experience. You also should give players the chance to see glimpses of the monster without it detecting you, so it's sensible to not have its detection be realistic. You also wouldn't want the player to get frustrated by needing to crawl through the whole game and memorize spawn locations. Making a horror game like Isolation is very difficult and comes down to more than just making it absurdly hard to survive longer than a few seconds.

    As a person who runs Aliens as a tabletop game, I have come to understand that tension is found in the space near failure, but not actual failure. I understand their programming choice to make it a little bit dumb. For most people, It's enough that it's in the room with you and can one shot you. Too many deaths and it becomes dull.
    Of course the mod is for players that are experienced with the game and that is a different case.

      You perfectly explained creative thought behind Subnautica, it was about creating terror and not horror in game. Just building up the tension and letting your imagination run wild. Well, until you get more familiar with game and your knowledge, takes the edge of it. Same with Alien Isolation, they really nailed the terror in the game.

    As cool as this would be, stealth games like this on hard+ mode really boil down to becoming a "dwarf simulator". You're crouched 100% of the time, never EVER running or even walking in your normal stance. It gets tedious quick and kills variety.

    I finished my nightmare + unpredictable alien mode run and it was fun for the most part, though the alien still acted stupid at times. Should I try this mod now? It looks super fun and super frustrating too. I kinda love it.

      @@gullefrosche Well, it was supposed to allow alien to roam more freely, like entering areas it would normally not enter (for example the room where Kuhlman is sitting behind the glass) or cutting off your route in certain parts (that was fun, as he was truly unpredictable), but maybe you're right. Perhaps on hard or normal he'd act better. Maybe I'll try that later. For now this mod is next :D

    I find the vanilla AI more realistic. Also, games need to be fun otherwise there is no point in playing them. An extreme difficulty would only make the game incredibly annoying. I've played the game several times and I found the AI to be really good, some flaws of course, but very organic and realistic most of the time. Playing this game in VR, by the way, is an incredible experience.

    When I created this mod I didn't imagine it could arouse so much interest for the wrong reason, trolling, if only the vanilla game had been more flexible and with less structural limitations, I wouldn't have let escape anyone 😈 I await a revised and corrected sequel.

    As much as I love this, this terrifies me. That mission (mission 5) is one of those missions that took me forever to do because it scared me out of my wits end. Having the AI be that terrifying would be insane. But now I’m morbidly curious and mildly interested in trying this mod.

    Xenomorph AI doesn't get enough credit. I know it was one of THE selling points of the game when it came out but now it's kind of forgotten and really there hasn't been a "stalker" type enemy done better in almost 10 years since the release of this game.

    I'm definitely gonna try to play the whole game with this Mod. When I first played AI, it was a very intense, never-racking, sweaty-palms, panic attack experience. But than I played it over & over again. And the Alien wasn't that scary anymore. I knew what, and what not, to do in order to easily make my way past every Alien encounter. This mod looks like just what I need to bring me back to that first-time experience of dread.

      To be fair, the same applies to anyone who faces the aliens long enough. They arent dumb, but they do have habits thatnpeople familiar with them can exploit...
      The main problem being that most folks don't have enough lives to figure those habits out.

      @@vla1ne depending on the individual, one can figure out after the first playthrough. But I guess you have to play on hard in order to figure out the patterns. People generally start on easy or medium, so they don't get the full scope of the alien's behavior, and even get too impressed with it. (they would finish hard as second playthrough and by that time they'll move on) If you play on hard first playthrough you'll learn the exploits quickly.

    I am a casual horror game enjoyer. They stress me out so bad, but I do like them here and there. Just watching the demonstration of this mod had my anxiety tweaking xD I don't think I could do it. I'll just stay proud for beating this game on hard mode.

    Huh, really good footage. See, I always treated the Alien as a threat to be avoided at all costs, never to be trolled, in Vanilla; the very first time I encountered it in the medical center, I locked myself in a locker and didn't come out. I actually remember quitting the game until I worked up the courage to continue! I never really tested the limits of its AI, but it appears to be kind of easy to fool, which is weird considering how well designed it first seemed. The mod is necessary.

      @@tankourito5419 you don't need to play thousands of hours to exploit the game mechanics. You can learn to do it on the second playthrough. That's just about 30 hours before you're capable of running circles around the alien. It doesn't mean the game loses fun, because still, a single mistake when "trolling" and you're dead.

    Any object should be able to somewhat cover you.
    Because what's the point of having those objects there in the 1st place.
    Not permanently perhaps,but briefly.
    Especially when the Xeno is minding his(her?)own bussines while going in your direction,but not actually actively seeking you.
    Unless they have xray vision or something somehow blocked only by the Mighty Locker.

      But you are partly hidden and you see Alien because you are actively paying attention to its position,while it is walking around
      pondering about the meaning of life or something.
      Infact,has it never happened to you in real life that you were actively searching for something and it even was in your field of vision the whole time,but because it was partly hidden behind some object+possibly of similar colour that you haven't realised you were looking at it the whole fcking time?
      Because it happened to me many,many times.
      Such as phones&remote controlers.
      Player is a lot bigger that those devices, but so is bed a lot bigger than the objects partly hiding those devices.

    I played it and finished on nightmare mode, but boy was it the hardest thing I’ve ever played. One single sound was enough to have the xeno patrol around nearby for like 10 minutes before it sort of gives you false security and comes back seconds later. When the alien was around, it was mostly me hiding and trying my best to be silent. No joke, even tipping over a small object was enough for it to react, even when it was so far away.
    Nightmare mode was very stressful and relied on using anything around you. Noise makers and other humans were the only way to keep it off your tail. Closets yes were safe, but it would always excrete the toxin whether it heard you or not. And if you regularly hid in the closet, that’s where it would always hang around.
    Never again will I play it on nightmare mode. Not just the xeno but resources were so scarce it was frustrating sometimes.

    Hey nice video! Do you know what specifically changes with this mod? Is there some sort of tolerance meter when it sees you or "thinks" it sees you and instead of investigating it will pursue where you were? Cool videos again btw
    Edit: Do doors also trigger this the alien in the insane mod? cause that is a cool effect if so

    You have to crouch almost the whole game, try to hide more efficiently (now it can spot you if you are able to see it), lockers are fun to hide at with this mod.
    Those are a few things I've noticed, oh, and the alien spawns a lot more.

You can almost see the Xenomorph "thinking" while it's in that room; it almost leaves, second-guesses itself, and tries to find you again like, "I KNOW I saw that little meat sack run in here!"

    ​ I think this is actually more accurate because it probably adapted it's behavior subconsciously while being around humans and not other xenos for so long. All this sort of negative behavior adaptation could have made also less of a lethal hunter because it had very easy prey to get and was tired of just getting it's meal and wanted to play with it's food so if anything it already knows you are there and is just copying human behavior to traumatize you because it knows you have likely seen it kill one of your supposed crew members.

    PSA & to OP: If you didn't know, you should limit your Alien Isolation on PC to 100 FPS with RivaTuner(it comes with MSI Afterburner) because when it goes over that, the game because a little buggy and weird shit happens. I noticed this instantly when watching the video because when the Alien would kill you the mouth animations had no sound.

    I like the idea of making it smarter, but it’s not really like they have eyes or anything. I like that the Xeno could get right in your face and not notice you as long as you’re being quiet enough. This mod makes it feel like they’ve got better vision than a telescope

    Прости, что пишу на русском, потому что не могу на английском, но скажу теье, как исправить баг со скримерами в alien isolation, а точнее как вернуть звук убийства.
    1. Открыть панель Nvidia
    2.зайти в раздел управление параметрами 3D
    3.будет большое окошко в том разделе и там есть пункты "Глобальные параметры" "Программные настройки", тебе нужен программные настройки. Там дальше понадобится найти игру и нужно ограничить FPS до 104, лучше поставить 102. У самого была проблема год, но я смог решить ее и надеюсь я помог тебе. Видео очень крутое

    I've played through Alien Isolation twice over the years, but to see it with this AI was terrifying as H... How on earth did you manage this without pissing your pants out of fright? I always play the game in the dark, for the best atmosphere, even if it makes it much scarier.

    I always find it weird when the Xeno bends down to look for you under things. It has no eyes or nose, the only hunting sense the Xeno has is sound.
    I mean, I get WHY (the devs) they did it this way, it gives you a chance to react and move away, but it's still weird.

      Ripped from the Wikipedia:
      They have elongated, cylindrical skulls with eyes underneath the "visor". In the novelization of Alien, the character Ash speculates that the Xenomorphs "see" by way of electrical impulse, similar to a shark's lateral line.
      So they don’t see the same way we do but they def still use things other than sound.

      If i recall when the devs released the original game they recommended it be played in hard mode to get the best game experience. Back then there was no Insane mod. The devs were right imho. Easy mode on ps3 was just not as gripping an experience. Going from memory here, it was several years ago. Wonder what the original creators would think of all the new mods available today. Amazing people still talk about and play this game, then it's still one of the best horror survival games around. I think it's recently had a lot of re-newed interest among gamers. Went and bought it again myself, though i've yet to replay: other games to complete.

    For me also with the vanilla AI the best horror game I've ever played. Playing it alone at night with a headset on, isolated from the outside world... It was just a constant rollercoaster ride. Haven't touched it since. 20-30 hours of pure terror. What a fuc**** trip Barely breathing half the time and every scripted dialogue felt like a vacation. I think most people who didn't find it creepy played it wrong. When I look at horror with constant RL breaks and a party environment :D , every horror is not scary.
