I live in Virginia, although I was born in Ohio. About 10 years ago a group of New Amish bought up farms in the neighborhood. They ask me many times to take them somewhere. We a have had many rewarding conversations. One of them even quipped that God had placed me here to help welcome them to the area. When my father passed, they came with food, etc. Couldn't ask for better neighbors. Thank you for sharing. I am so sorry for your heartache. You and your family are certainly in my prayers.🙏

I grew up in Virginia and was raised as a Mennonite, new order, electric, cars all of that. Anyway, all of the Amish and all of the Mennonites were very welcoming and kind, no matter which orders they were in. Honestly, I think I enjoyed the wooden Amish and Mennonite toys more than the modern toys.

@@alvindueck2104 It normally isn't. However, somewhere on my Grandfather's side of the family they left Germany escaping the Catholic persecution of the Amish and Mennonites. Over the generations and marriages out of the Mennonite community and different order changes, they just stayed Mennonite. We didn't dress like you would think Mennonites would dress, we wore regular clothes. Grandma would wear her Kapp though. Last January my Grandmother passed, Grandaddy passed in 1983 in a farm accident. But I went to Virginia last summer to visit their graves at the same Mennonite church I grew up in. The memories flooded me ! I went to one of my uncle's houses after that and he showed me three albums of pictures, birth certificates, and other important documents. Now that was a trip! My great-grandmother was born in Saskatchewan.

I’m in ny and there’s a amish farm down the road from me and the kids my age (17-19) probably know 90 percent of my bloodline and some of them work with me and my dad at his construction company and they are all nice and talkative, not sure if they are Mennonite’s,old/new order but some amish would talk to you and won’t be completely silent and some amish will have the personality of a stone wall. They even taught me some Pennsylvanian Dutch and were mindblown when we got them McDonald’s and energy drinks that they asked for themselves 😂

We are still the same people, but the religious system has completely come between us.

Same happened with my sister in the Jehovah's Witnesses. When she was first learning about it, they warned her over and over again that she will lose her family and her family will go against her but not to worry, because they are now her family. She became so obsessed with the religion, that we told her that we would love to visit with her, but every time she comes over, she brings her Bible and preaches to us. If she could leave the Bible home and just have a normal conversation without bringing up scripture, then everything would be good. She then reminded us that they warned her this would happen.... I told her, "no, she is making the decision to leave us, because we require a sister to visit with, not a preacher"

    • @happycows

It is not painful for everyone, just most. I realized a long time ago that it is better to get rid of toxic hoomans out of my life. They do more harm than good, especially when they refuse to even admit they have problems let alone even get help for those problems. Family is not what a person is born into in this life. Family is whom we choose to be family. That is how I have viewed things for a very long time. I have a great family, family that many have abandoned. I make sure they are well taken care of, have food, water and shelter as well as toys. That is not even including two of my own furry children. I will always love and cherish my entire family.

I too have experienced what you're going through and trust me, either they simply don't care or they're far too terrified to go against the status quo. The women especially, have never lead an independent life, they're way too scared to go against the church and the family. I was adopted and moved away at 18, the first chance I got, so I was secretly tolerated, but my name was drug through the mud, when they thought I couldn't hear. I've learned the best mindset is to just let go, people will be who they want to be and it's no reflection on us. I know it's difficult to let go and let them be, but it's what's best for your peace of mind. Don't set your self up, for a broken heart my friend. You deserve better.

I agree with u wholeheartedly, in general, and with the spirit u meant to!!
      That’s the ultimate Ideal!
Yet, the Real life can bring in situations that are very, very difficult to deal with!
Sometimes it can be even a matter of life and death, such as during Wars, persecution, etc!
Historically, People got arrested for certain political or religious views, or being of the wrong religion, ethnicity, nationality, etc! Even the sympathizers or those that help them, get imprisoned or executed!
The Amish and the Mennonites had suffered much persecution when they had to leave Europe as Refugees to save own lives!
Those that followed Jesus in the Bible, surely brought a family division and conflict within their Families! Lots of pain for both sides!
It is great when the families are on the same page, can help each other!
What if they are not on the same page??
When people are at polar opposites , whether politically, religious, social, cultural, etc, it can be very, very difficult to navigate within the Family!
I’m dealing with this right now myself and I’m at total loss how to navigate this!
Of course, one or both can decide not to talk about it, ignore the polarization and concentrate on the familial ties!
It can still present a serious moral or ethical dilemma, depending on the issues!
Strong emotions are aroused whenever the topic is touched on! Each side is convinced they are on the right side!!Even when u know that the certain family members are deluded and had accepted the disinformation or bias fed to them, too often neither side is able to move forward to peace or an agreement!!
Just like in this ex-Amish video!
