I miss arcades like many 80s and 90s kids. I feel like I didn’t get to enjoy them long enough since I was born in late 88 and I was rarely given money to really enjoy them.
198X is a fantastic homage to the games of the late 80s/early 90s, and feels far more refined than most games of its ilk. ...if you can get over the unbelievably bad narration, that is.
The whole "kid escaping suburban angst to find out who I really am" thing the cutscenes are doing is actually one of the biggest late '80s TV movie tropes out there, and as someone who was a suburban angst-riddled kid in the late '80s I think they did a great job of reflecting all the cliche things that make that trope what it is, right down to the sappy narration that would have had every 13 year old of the time nodding and thinking "man, it's like they're talking about me!". I mean yeah, it's pretty insufferable by today's standards, and if you didn't live through that era you really wouldn't get it. But I guess the same could be said of every generation.
Yeah, I was wondering why they decided to go with the overly whiny narration. I get the fact that arcades and video games in general are like escaping to other worlds, but did they really need to create unbearably long cutscenes that don’t serve much purpose? Also, I haven’t watched too many movies from the 80s and 90s about how boring or unbearable protagonists home lives are. The only notable ones that I’ve seen are the first Karate Kid, Stand by Me, The Outsiders and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? I haven’t seen the Breakfast Club, and I’m not sure if the Back to the Future movies and the Lost Boys fall under a similar category.
This looks like something I would love to put on my launch box arcade. As long as the controls can map to a joystick layout... Something like final fight... This would be amazing.
Yeah the game natively supports gamepads. You can actually see right at the beginning of the video, in the corner there's a Steam notification saying that it had mapped everything to my PS4 controller. And if you don't like the settings, you can remap the buttons through Steam
The graphics and presentation are masterful, but I could do without the droning narrative intermissions that drag on. The animated backgrounds for the story sections do look very good, though.
I wish the game segments were more fleshed out rather than little demos to progress the narrative. Overall it has a nice vibe. More 80's than the 80's actually were.
As fun as the game segments look, I'll have to give this one a pass because you can't skip the cutscenes. Cool to see Yuzo Koshiro on here with "Shadowplay" though!
Once you beat it the first time, you can choose any of them from the menu without the story sequences. The game is pretty easy - you get unlimited lives in all the games.
@@NintendoComplete It's the dealing with not being able to skip the cutscenes the first time that I can't handle. Mlehgh. You've got far more patience than I do when it comes to games like this, lol.
"Didn't tell me where to go or what to do". So where are the RPGs, Adventures and exploration games? Pretty sure everything else tells you (at least in a silent way) where to go. At least in the 80s.
hola buenas tardes , te gustaría jugar un videojuego para android ? es de vampiros genero yo contra el barrio pero intento darle otro concepto y pues hacer una saga .
Hahaha that character sprite looks like they took Axel's sprite from SoR2/3 and put a hoodie on him, doesn't it? The pose is pretty much exactly the same.
this game would be so awesome if it wasnt a coming of age story, i just wish it was a collection of badass short games that had high replayability. the quality here is awesome, but its all ruined by the meaningful story. i sound like im joking but this is seriously annoying
Every single section of this game lacks depth. It's like a compilation of tech demos that somehow still only takes an hour to beat. I get that it's an homage, but homages are meant to be a small part of the whole, not the whole dang thing.
U need cool hairstyle to be damn true 80'er.His clothes sucks too,m.O.Can't say i'm impressed.Yuzo Koshiro is Bare Knukle's composer, yes? These tunes were damn good.

This is such a good game, too bad it's so short, brings back those late 80s and early 90s childhood memories.
20 seconds in and I’m already in love with the soundtrack..

They actually got yuzo koshiro, huh?
@@Invidente7 Yeah, I was surprised that they actually did
The narrator sucks ass, good music though
For a ninja game no less! 😆

"End of discussion!" (game crashes) epic!
Kill screen is a homage to old school dungeon crawler RPG. in the like of Ultima and Wizardry.
This game looks awesome!!!

The side-scrolling shooter is most definitely Gradius/Macross inspired!
And R-Type.
I really want to try this out, because everything looks so slick. But yeah that INFINITE SADNESS theme was tired even then. Suck it up, bucko.
The best homage to the 80’s aside Kung Fury.
The mix of style are cool.
I loved Kung Fury soooooo much! And that David Hasselhoff song! Lmao so good
NintendoComplete So good indeed😊.
Wish I didn’t suck so bad at shmups. I really wanted to play through this.
So, this is Streets of Rage + R-Type + Shinobi + Outrun, right?
I was actually enjoying it and want to see the next part if it continues
You had me at Yuzo Koshiro.

Those were the days when in 80s Arcade were something AWESOME, COOL, BODACIUOS & RADICAL like 80s MTV Usa.

These guys should do a Shadow Run game
Was there a the girl who leapt through time reference
Reminds me Ready Player One :o
So.... did this kid kill his mom?
The MC kid looks just like the MC from Persona 4 with brown hair instead of white.
q( ^-^)p OBRIGADO POR LER O MEU COMENTÁRIO😊

Don’t like the hoodie on the beat-em up character, should’ve had a kangol bermuda bell cap on instead

I liked the look alot , nothing wrong with it..

You sound like you are a soyjak.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
intro is too damn long
That story sure was some teenage hipster emo non-sense, eh? xD
Is this supposed to be a hipster neckbeard game or something?
SEGA Saturn!!
