Maybe I'm biased (having just bought an Ibanez Mikro bass) but I really like the looks of the GSR180 and I could live with the tone - some EMGs would probably fit if you really wanted to get more sounds. And yes, I bought the Mikro at Andertons.
I love all the Andertons videos, but I'm still waiting on another Sounds Like featuring bass instead of guitar. So many great bass players out there with killer tones waiting to be replicated.
Absolutely love Lee during the intro. Doing what every guitar player who picks up a bass does (I count myself in that) - play the root note alternated with a few other notes in the chord. Bob around a bit to show you get the rhythm. Sorted.
I believe this is referred to as "The Law Of Diminishing Returns". It gets to a point in musical instruments where you're paying 20% more for a 1% increase in performance

Eh, I bought a ~2k€ Sandberg California because it felt miles ahead of Fenders and such for me, and I've still noticed a huge quality improvement over it when I tried out a ~3k€ custom shop one; there was an even larger quality gap between the ~3k€ custom and a Fodera I had the chance to play. @@FuruHataNinzaburo-w8z Probably true for metal? Does having quality instruments not matter in metal, or something? Regardless, I feel like $1,000 is where the quality increase per dollar really starts dropping off. Sure, a $2000-3000 instrument will still be nicer, but at around $1000, maybe give or take $300 depending on what you're looking for, you generally should be able to get high quality hardware and electronics with very good build quality from most brands. At the very least I know that the absolute highest-end bass I could see myself ever buying is a Dingwall NG3, and even those are only around the $2k mark.
Yeah. I feel the same. I started out in my warwick journey with a rockbass corvette 6 string, and I didn't like it for the woods and the neck dive. I took up on an offer that was a custom shop '06 corvette $$, and I love that thing so much. They both cost the same (~$850) but this corvette $$ is so much nicer, has the switches, better pre-amp, original brass just-a-nut, bronze frets, and the swamp ash body & wenge/ovangkol neck. Now, I don't even like playing my 6 string corvette, as it feels much cheaper, and when I play it, i only wish it was as nice as the $$. Plus, I love all the tone. I was genuinely considering selling all my basses to get a 5 string BO thumb, as I love the thumbs tone, and I don't like the thickness of the warwick 6 string necks, so the 5 string is the nice balance inbetween. I also have an Ibanez GSR200, and it was the bass I started out with, and I don't like playing it as much, but it was a nice bass.

I have a Squier Affinity P-bass that I got from a pawn shop, which I play (very amateur) gigs with. I might one day be willing to trade up, but Captain Lee is making a strong case for not bothering.
It may be because I am mainly a guitar player, but as long as it plays well, which I trust any Ibanez would, tone isn’t as noticeable with a bass, so you could go with the £150 bass. With a guitar, however, I really noticed the difference in intonation, playability, versatility, ability to sound good and not make weird noises with high gain, and tone when spending £700-800 on a player series Strat and Gretsch Electromatic.
I also feel the anxiety with a new shiny, expensive, beautiful guitar. Just whack it with a screwdriver once or twice and that fear is gone, instantly!

Great video once again. I know a lot of guitar players, all who make a decent living from music, that own vastly expensive guitars (that they bang on about), but have a cheap bass knocking about just for "recording with". No one ever comments on how cheap the bass sounds on their albums. If you're a good player, don't waste money on headstock names or special woods. No one but you will care.
So you choose the pickup by adjusting the volume of each pickup. That sounds like a great idea in my book. No more ugly switch. I like that. I want that on my guitars.
When I were in Los Angeles, i went into a guitar centre without a budget in mind and just tested every bass with 5 strings they had. Walked out with a SR505 .. Cheap, sounds amazing and plays fantastic
I had a SR400EQM dragoneye burst a few years back and ended up getting rid of it because I wasn’t playing much at the time. Still the most comfortable bass I’ve ever played/held. I’ve got a fender MIM jazz bass right now and I still like the $400 bass much better. Going to order a new one soon and have my local shop set it up where I bought the same model at before. I didn’t really notice pinching too hard on it. It just fit me really well. I did have the 5 string version as well and didn’t like that flat backed neck at all. Any actual musician paying more than 7-800 pounds for their #1 is either rich or vain.
I have this exact Ibanez. I have two MIM Fenders. The difference is huge. The Ibanez original pickups are bad. Very muddy. The electronics are quite poor as well. No shielding. When I was playing on stage and I was using only one pickup there would be a really loud buzzing. The knobs were not working correctly. The MIM - a really good sound, some minor problems either with the nut or the knobs, but much better value. I would say that I would pick up the cheapest USA made Fender and I don't see any value buying a more expensive one. For 6000+ you can get the following combos - Jazz bass and a Precision, active and passive, freted or fretless.
I still think 1250-ish freedom bucks...1000-1500...right around there...that's the sweet spot for guitars and basses. You can definitely spend more OR less, but that's really where you're going to start getting a nice variety of really nice instruments that will fit a wide variety of players, styles, play levels, etc.
To my ear, the Warwick had the superior tone but only marginally. I own both Warwick and Ibanez basses and like them all. It's all about what you're reasonably able to pay and that is a personal choice.
There is a point of diminishing returns with going up the scale. The Warwick has surely gone way past it but if you think of features you want as a professional bassist such as active electronics, a wide tonal range, a neck through body and string through bridge - these are features that can make a real difference if you are a touring musician, recording musician or discerning amateur. Things like the artwork and other features pertaining to the looks of the bass are entirely up to individual tastes. Yes, a more affordable instrument will do the job just fine, but maybe not quite as nicely. There is something to be said for a higher cost item with high quality parts but past a point it just gets silly.
On the subject of having fantastic looking guitars/basses and then being afraid to touch them, this is why I would buy a Sire V7 Swamp Ash over a US Fender Jazz. Looks just as nice but is a third of the price. You would still be annoyed if you damaged it, but probably not too much.
When The Wold Is Running Down! Yeah Lee !!! that's crazy cuz i listened to Zenyatta Mondatta yesterday and i hadnt heard it in ages (my fave Police album btw) Nathan, you can groove your ass off but please play sus chords on that the next time ok? Just kidding of course :) thanks for'the vids mates, peace from France
I learned to play on a bass that must've been worth less than a hundred euros. I remember my left index finger being full of scratches because the fretboard finish was terrible and many notes on the fretboard were out of tune because the neck was twisted and the truss rod adjustment didn't really work. Nowadays I play a Warwick which isn't even worth a grand and I'm more than happy with it. I really couldn't care less how much the bass costs as long as I feel comfortable playing it and I feel some kind of a connection to the instrument. I still have that "shitty old bass" I started with and I wouldn't trade it for anything just because of the history I have with it. Of course there's a difference between a 50$ and a 5000$ bass but that's really not the point. If you like an instrument, you go with it and how it makes you feel and play can't really be measured by money.
i have ibanez bass's - and like them - but dont ever expect to get a replacement neck if one gets damaged... their customer service rep straight up told me that they are just a wharehouse that assembles guitars - and theres no such thing as a replacement neck.... so if anyone finds out any diff - please let me know....
I really like Warwick basses. Own a Corvette myself and it's a wonderful bass for a mid-range price. It cost me about £600 if I remember and the tone and feel of it are impeccable. Use it for rock/metal and blues. Cheap guitars are cheap for a reason. I would love to get my hands on that £7k beauty, even just for a few moments......Even if it is a ridiculous and slightly unjustified price.
There are many low cost instruments available today that offer astounding value for money. However up to perhaps the £1000 mark, guitars and basses can almost always be improved by things like sorting out the odd high fret, oiling and polishing the frets and fretboard and a good set up. I'd like to think this isn't the case for the really expensive end of the market. At some point once you get on to the fancy marquetry, inlays, precious stones, gold and silver and hand painted graphics and so on any instrument becomes an artwork, a statement of the skill and taste of the maker. Good for an investment and display in a glass case, but you wouldn't play them.
i've played guitar for about 7 years, this video has actually made me consider buying a (very cheap) bass! any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.
A friend bought a supercheap acoustic guitar. Stopt playing after a short while. Then she asked if I could learn her something. I picked up the guitar, tried to tune it but that was impossible. And playing it was also very difficult.
First bass I ever owned: GSR180. I decided to turn it into fretless bass. Result: Amazing bass, I was shocked when I heard it for the first time after defreting! And it’s feather light. I’ll cut my hands off if I ever buy a Warwick, those basses are not even worth as a fire wood.
I think I'd rather spend £149 on the Ibanez, £5335 on lessons, £1500 on an amp and cab... and £5 on a fish and chip supper. And can I have a discount for one without the octopus and mermaid please because it's really tacky. Personally I wouldn't be 'Chucking my nuts over it down at The Pig & Whistle'.
7 grand??? And it's used. Seems a bit pricey for a second hand guitar. Does your finger sweat maintain the value? My experience is that tone woods don't make as much of a difference with basses because the low resonant frequencies don't interact as well with the tone woods as the higher frequencies of a 6 string. I think that is why basses seem to be much better value per £. So it comes down to the electronics, which are getting cheaper and cheaper for better quality all the time. Sire are a case in point.
Imo, once you start getting around the 800-1000 range the law of diminishing returns really starting to take effect performance wise, and you’re really just starting to pay for looks and the logo on the headstock. My cheapest bass is 80 bucks, my most expensive is 900. Unplugged, you can hear some differences, and the fit and finish is different qualities, but plugged in and recorded in a mix with proper EQ, with a good set up on the instrument, and yoy cant tell the difference. Get what you can afford and like. I didn’t get my first higher end bass until I had been playing for around 10 years. My “cheap” Ibanez’s served me well and I still love em just as much as my high end Ibanez.
That warwick sounded absolutely horrible... It didn't have the clarity and balance in tones that the ibanez did. That warwick was only expensive because if the art involved in making it. And on the argument about a gigging bassist, the bassist would obviously choose sound and playability over asthetics. Asthetics are the last thing considered in getting a gigging instrument. It must stay in tune, must be able to set in the overall mix well and must be easy to physically play so your creativity isn't stiffled by discomfort. I'm seriously shocked by how cheap the warwick sounded. That warwick sounded like the £150 bass even when Nathan was playing it which proves even a talented bassist can't make that warwick sound better.
The unanswered question here is how much does the "drawing" cost? In other words, what does Warwick charge for a bass with the same spec but without the fancy - and to my taste off-putting - visuals?!
I recently found this youtube channel so these may be questions that have been asked and answered. What instruments doe the Captain play? If he hadn't been born into the business does he thing he'd play anything at all?
I wish they'd continued the kraken theme up onto the fretboard, it'd look awesome with the top few frets having and inlay to match. What's the usual price for a regular streamer, about £2k? That's a big increase for something that looks prettier.
Rob Downes standard is probably closer to £3000 , this one had the crazy graphics and bartolinis (MEC are standard), plus the top is probably reserve wood. Btw the way they recorded this is terrible. Really not representative of the Warwick sound. this is also a neck through versus bolt on.
There is a minute difference in definition, but there's not enough of a difference sound wise. My $200 Ibanez 7 string plays just a well as my buddy's $900+ (not sure but he payed a good bit) Chapman unicorn rainbow something or another. Expensive insturments play very well and they have 0 defects, but a $200 bass plus $150-$200 pickups and a good setup will get you damn close to the thousands of dollar instruments. You pay for premium parts, workmanship, name, and sometimes quirkiness rather than the actual instrument in most cases.
You should do like James Hetfield, who gets a custom guitar made (albeit nothing fancy and just a flat camo finish) just to beat it up every show. Ramming it down on the headstock and all. He really takes relic-ing seriously... - Whereas say Kirk Hammett back in the day took an Ibanez look-a-like and trashed that one. But I bet it was still OK. - I think Murray and Gers in Maiden used proper Fender Strats to throw around though. But yea, they all have the budget. But the point being; Considering what théy do with them, I think you don't have to be too careful unless it's just a piece of art like that Warwick. But then again, considering how chunky it looks, it could probably take a good beating. Just too bad it's a neck-through, you can't fix that (as easily).
If I buy the £7k bass, will I be able to stop people from talking during my bass solo though?

You're paying for a better build quality mainly. tighter fit between neck and body, smoother neck etc wouldn't say £7k better but better
I love custom Warwicks. Currently saving to get one.
Best of luck man
How much are the pick-ups from the Warwick?
I still think 1250-ish freedom bucks...1000-1500...right around there...that's the sweet spot for guitars and basses. You can definitely spend more OR less, but that's really where you're going to start getting a nice variety of really nice instruments that will fit a wide variety of players, styles, play levels, etc.
Can u do one for what matters more bass amp or bass guitar when gigging?
For 7k I would buy American Jazz bass, Aguilar amp and cab, and lots of accessories and still I would have around £3k left.
That's a lovely Warwick NS you've got there, or is it a Spector Streamer?
i have ibanez bass's - and like them - but dont ever expect to get a replacement neck if one gets damaged... their customer service rep straight up told me that they are just a wharehouse that assembles guitars - and theres no such thing as a replacement neck.... so if anyone finds out any diff - please let me know....
I own a Warwick - I love it! - but 7K pounds for a bass is ridiculous.
My case, doing more than one blind audition at the biggest bass shop in my country, none of my favourites were under 4000€. Damn.
At least the Inanez doesn't have a wonky headstock. $7000 and Warwick can't get strings to go straight into the tuning pegs? WTF
Iv played that Warick and it is amazing
The captain on a bass wow :D I’m a guitar player but I like noodling on a bass every now and then, very informative
Ibanez basses are best because it is affordable and sounds great ❤
You can always spot the expensive basses from a mile away - by the missing fret markers...
i've played guitar for about 7 years, this video has actually made me consider buying a (very cheap) bass! any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Joe Ibanez SR range or Sire are worth a look.
As a watch guy, car guy and bass guy, I like this video
A friend bought a supercheap acoustic guitar. Stopt playing after a short while. Then she asked if I could learn her something. I picked up the guitar, tried to tune it but that was impossible. And playing it was also very difficult.
pa4tim I think you meant “teach” her something.
Can you do episode for markbass little mark TUBE amp ?
How much for the Warwick now that it's a used demo model? ;)
God damn Nathan can play. Didn't know the GSR had a jazz bass version, thought it was just PJ.
For 7k I’d want the Gibson auto tune equivalent to a AutoSlap finger on that bass.
Does look nice though.
Harley benton have nailed it
I think I'd rather spend £149 on the Ibanez, £5335 on lessons, £1500 on an amp and cab... and £5 on a fish and chip supper. And can I have a discount for one without the octopus and mermaid please because it's really tacky. Personally I wouldn't be 'Chucking my nuts over it down at The Pig & Whistle'.
Davie504 made a cardboard bass sound amazing. 99% talent
pretty sure
it is 20% talent and 80% hard work and practice
@@NotSosigRamsey That's what talent is: the willingness to put in the work and suck while doing it.
Who gives a shit
Tasty jam in the beginning
Wow! Now that's a gorgeous bass!
Nice to see the captain going back to his bass roots lol 👍
15:55 epic pun there Lee
wait wait wait! why is el capitan playing 4 strings all of a sudden? what happened? and why is his scale so long? I'm so confused
What an absolutely stunning bass!
I thought the brown one was the expensive...
Where is Skinny Lee?
Not sure, but the fact that The.Captain introduced himself as "Stand-in Lee" suggests that bass-player-Lee will be back at some point.
The Ibanez sounded so much better. Never understood the appeal of active pickups unless you're Les Claypool.
Probably the Bartolinis tbh, not everyone is into them. Quite "polite" sounding. Warwicks don't usually come with them, bit of a strange choice.
Awesome jam dudes!
first part of the cheaper bass sounded like some jaco lol
The unanswered question here is how much does the "drawing" cost? In other words, what does Warwick charge for a bass with the same spec but without the fancy - and to my taste off-putting - visuals?!
I recently found this youtube channel so these may be questions that have been asked and answered.
What instruments doe the Captain play?
If he hadn't been born into the business does he thing he'd play anything at all?
Please ask Nathan to ask Mark to come on the show, Captain meets Mark King,,, YES!!
Not sure about that Warwick. You’re gonna have to send it to me to give it a try.
Nathan King could make a rubber band sound amazing.
Hey, my 1000 pound fender jazz garhers dust because I got a Mikro
Ahh Nathan, mucho love and respect. :)
I thought that Warwick was a Spector bass for a second, I guess they just have similar body styles then
You should do like James Hetfield, who gets a custom guitar made (albeit nothing fancy and just a flat camo finish) just to beat it up every show.
Opening jam - holy smokes.
Good instruments & watches for that matter hold their value so you can usually sell them on & get your money back or even a profit;
me and my friend were in andertons a few weeks ago and he was playing that £7000 bass for 2 hours even though he isnt a bass player
The expensive one looks fly af tho. But the cheaper one sounds pretty good
I love it when expensive basses look so ridiculous I don't have to suffer unobtainable bass anguish.
Funky Captain laying the grooves...
