Unlike most pedals, envelope filters aren’t the sort of tools that you can just turn the knobs and see what happens. You really have to know what you are doing up front in order to get a good funky sound. They also sound better for bass if you put some drive or fuzz in first.
The setup they had in the intro was pretty good, and was obviously dialed in before hand by someone else. Then they started turning the dials at random and everything immediately went down hill.
This really deserves a blind challenge, where all of the pedals are dialed in with the best funk sound, and compared to each other when they sound their best. I feel like this video was comparing how bad you could make each pedal sound.
Also, for you beginners out there, these pedals are notorious for blowing speakers, so tread lightly when experimenting with one of these.
Amen to that! More or less any bass pedal video here goes like this one. Too bad.
and they should know that turning all knobs up (specialy sensitive threshold control) will ruin filter's variable dynamic control very nature
Not to mention he's playing with ACTIVE electronics. Envelope filters don't behave very well with a hot signal - in my experience - unless you roll back the volume OR the active preamp is active boost/passive cut. The sensitivity controls and LP are the foundation of playing bass with an ENV filter.
I think also if the original bass tone had more mids and low mids, something to filter there and have some energy. I dont own one and i dont have experience but i am thinking to buy and use one
I wish I had read your solid advice before buying a Croak foot pedal.
The Moog Moogerfooger MF-101 pedal’s Drive IS ALWAYS ON! Whether the pedal is on or off. So its drive setting, being at the end of your chain, impacted all pedals which came before it...
I am listening to this with high quality headphones, so my guess is you had it set high, which boosted/distorted the pedals before it...But I am watching on iPhone, so I cannot see where the drive knob is set... Any setting above 9 o’clock starts overdriving anything coming before it with my set up.
That is why mine is on its own true-bypass loop. But hey, in fact, its drive tone, which is full range with lots of bottom end, is soo good, I use it as my bass blues drive with guitar!
A little more research guys!
I wondered about that too. This is why I prefer That Pedal Show. Those guys don’t make basic mistakes like this. Anderton’s should really take this video down, it’s embarrassing.

[Doorbell rings]
WOMAN: (opens door) Hey.
MAN: Hi M'am, did you order a pizza?
WOMAN: I sure did.
MAN: With extra Sausage?
WOMAN: Oh yeah.
MAN: Double Stuffed?
WOMAN: Mmm sounds tasty.
[WOMAN opens purse but finds out she has no cash]
WOMAN: Oh no, looks like I don't have any cash. Come inside let me see if I got any in the house.
MAN: Come inside?! OK.
(Music Intensifies)
PLOT TWIST: She had exact change and the Pizza Man left, while the woman enjoys her pizza (Music intensifies even more)
ANOTHER PLOT TWIST:
After eating some slices of the delicious double stuffed pizza with extra sausage, she decides to go get herself a drink of tap water from the kitchen but as she’s turning on the faucet, no water came out.
She then calls a Plumber....
[A similar scenario to the pizza delivery guy before then occurs 5 minutes after but with dialogue appropriate to someone who works in the plumbing industry]
*Music intensifies a bit more*
ruclips.net/video/GzacG3Z_xuI/видео.html
I love how the music just continues to intensify but nothing really happens :-P
Hahahaha
you guys have a lot of fun when reviewing pedals, cool channel, it keeps you in a good mood and the reviews are actually very useful
Worth noting that the MXR is band pass only (hence the blend). Really good out of the box for funk, but not super flexible. The Q-Tron didn't appear to have a blend - which would be annoying in BP mode. The Moog is a different beast altogether and for bass-synth sounds pretty unbeatable in 4 pole mode. I think the others are 2 pole only.
Great tune at the start, but you demoed the Micro Q-Tron in HP and BP mode, needs to be In Low Pass in any filter without a blend control on a bass or you lose all your bottom end. Also everything seems to be through the Moogerfoogers always on drive which is going to colour how all these pedals sound!
Dat camera rumble @ 11:49
Bass overdrives in the next episode maybe?
You guys always do such a great job with the “All About The Bass” videos!! Keep it up!!
nathan is like in constant pain
Yep. Could be constipation?!
its his inner big bad bass demon demanding his sweet release threw his expressions
even in his moments of interest and excitement he's in sheer agony
can't blame the man he said himself he's full of the funk, he's in need of some serious acufunKture
Any idea when youll have those new flea basses on the show?
Geddy Lee had a slightly quacking sound going on in the mid 80's but I always thought it was due to his technique on the Wal bass he played at the time.
he went with slightly lighter strings playing the Wal, plus those Wal onboard EQs have a pretty impressive sweep.
Wow, you two need to revisit this after having a guru show you how envelope filters work.
Hey guys! I think it would be really helpful for you to make a video which demos amps by speaker size. I've just been turned on to how vastly different a 10" sounds from a 12"... I'm sure a lot of other bassists as well as myself would like to hone in their preferences between the two or three different sized speakers we are usually choosing from.
Don't play bass. But enjoyed the bass pedal video much more than the other pedal videos.
For a second there, I was waiting for a pan out camera shot of a new york apartment, then a tall white dude with an afro to come barging in yelling JERRRY!
FELLAS THE MOOG WAS ON THE WHOLE TIME!!
q-tron - sounded okay in some settings, but others where naff
fwonk - again had a one or two good sounds
accufunkture - sounded aweful
EQD - was, ummmm, unique, i think there might have been something wrong with it, other demos didnt sound like that :/
mxr - if you want that one sound it does it really well, not much room for experimenting, BIG PLUS for the dry mix control
moog - like a better version of the mxr, sounds better, more experimenting, twice the cost and three times the size
id say your guys assessment is pretty fair, the moog/mxr are the best, by a mile, the eqd is the weird cousin who comes round but your pretty sure he's giving meth to your dog, and the others arent welcome in these part fella'
" but you're pretty sure he's giving meth to your dog" gets a thumbs-up without question! LOL
when someone offers me to put my cat in the blender @13:51
lol
11:48 so much funk, it had the camera shooketh
I’m going to build a second pedalboard dedicated to envelope filters
Six-Five-Two.
For pure value and tone; The MXR.
Been saying mooooooog for 30 years....
So has everybody else.... who cares
Loved the jam at the beginning. "I'm so full of funk right now" haha!
I call this the thundercat filter
Need to cop one of these and a 6 string to be able to play them changes
he plays a pigtronix envelope phaser i believe
and the moog actually
I always enjoy you guys. You make demos fun. But I have a question about this video. Since envelope filters like to be the first in the chain, do you think there could have been any buffering from pedals up the chain? Perhaps a better review would be to plug each pedal in individually.
I just got my dream bass pedal MXR bass envelope filter for $150
Not the best demo of the EQD Spatial Delivery. Such a versatile envelope filter.
PURE NASTINESS FROM THAT BASS
What about combining a phaser with a Ring Modulator pedal using a Tayloe Mixer.
out of bassballs? is that why you went with that damn q-tron
What about a Mu-Tron III? I keep hearing it’s the best but it’s very hard to find
It's the original and no longer made. This is for people shopping for filters. MuTron does have a newer version though.
Goddam funky af
That intro just sounds like a 70's porno.
it is
that jam in the beginning 🤤
The moog is not true bypass so coloured every pedal
Very useful video, i´m going for the MXR BASS ENVELOPE FILTER (Moog one is too high in price for me).
Thanks and subscribed!
Instant SITCOM music... or a cop comedy ....or a talk show !!!
14:05 “jos found out” 🥰🥰🥰 one of the few of us works at Andertons 🙌🏻👏🏻
Nathan looks just like the captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin
The MXR works great for guitar also
They all sounded exactly like the Moog. howcomdat?
I have the MXR...BEST as you heard in the open
Whats the difference between the MXR Bass Envelope and the MXR Bass Auto Q?
Already bought mxr for my stingray 😈🥰
I just want Nathan to give me big ole slap on the back for doing a good job
No love for the Mooer Bass Sweeper, the choice of the price-conscious bassist and/or tight bastard?
Great for it's price and it also sounds good, I wish it had a volume control though.
i have an mxr envelope filter coz its hard to find a moogerfooger here in the philippines. also the fact that moogerfooger is bit pricey. :)
The MXR IS THe KING OF THE BEASTS!!!
You will acquire a new occupation with this pedal as a *porn musicians.*
No love for the BASS BALLS? That's the funkiest one of the lot!
yesssssssssssssssssssss
So the guitarists get valve amp comparisons as well as Fender custom shop and high end Gibson demos. Where as bass players get an envelope filter comparison.
Could we have some different styles like rock and metal and the gear that can help produce that sound? Could we have a demo of the Geezer Butler Head of Doom or the Laney Nexus tube head? Or how about some Fender custom shop basses? Is that too much to ask?
how do you get your funk levels up?
That jam in the beginning.. Jesus
Bootsy Collins vibes!
I liked the Fwonkbeta the best, followed by the MXR. MXR's blend knob is great, but as the owner of one I can say that the low frequency it closes on will rattle the hell out of the speaker and everything else around. Also, it HATES anything that buffers it, such as a wireless system.
Sounds like farting, in the bath. ;-)
Gotta love that 70s porno music intro!
Unless you can afford the monster Moog, the MXR is the best of them. It's really quite versatile and and sounds excellent, providing you run a pre-amp in front of it. Out of the box, it's ok--basically what you hear in this vid--but if you amp it, the thing really comes alive!
Disagree, the demo diminished the value of all pedals. The are all grate if set correctly
Damnit I just bought a spatial delivery and now I think I need the mxr
I had both and I think the mxr just has it
MXR 👍👍👍
Cual pedal convierte el sonido del bass en sonido de tuba instrumento de aire ?
Man this could be Vulfpeck. Get Joe Dart over seas!
You guys do great videos but I totally disagree with you guys this time : Fwonkbeta and Qtron sound much better than the other ones imo !!
Starsky and Hutch..... what's the word on the street Huggy?
this pedal is a must in my bass rig.Fuuuunk.
Yay
I want my bass to sound like Earth Wind & Fire.
Well, I don't feel like I'll have to replace my M82 any time soon. Maybe there was too much random fiddling and not enough trying to dial in a usable sound, but all other pedals didn't sound like bass anymore. If that's what you need, fine, but I only really liked the MXR. Moog was interesting and I think you could get great sounds out of it but it sounded mostly like a blackbird in distress.
Nathan looks like he's stuck
Moooog? It’s pronounced Moge!
Hoho yanks, no idea
so are you saying its a moge moogerfooger or a moge mogerfoger, or a moge mogerfooger?
Not sure, I just know that Bob Moog, its inventor, pronounces his name that way
Fairynuff, if that's the way he pronounces it then it must be correct. So it'll be a Moge moogerfooger then?
Yeah I'd rather not
Ashdown Stuart Zender Funk Face ????
I think I’m pregnant from that intro jam. And I’m a dude. 🫃
The Moogerfooger and the Mxr to mention them two, are very different pedals and they are made for different porpoises. Choosing an Envelope filter is very subjective. It depends on the bass, pickups, preamp and amp, touch and sensitivity of the player, strings etc. I wish they could explain this things before making videos like this, it will save the buyers valuable time. I personally will never buy an envelope filter without testing it my self, same as many other pieces of equipment.
Get cracking with the quacking!!!!
Do some Gibson sg bass
ruclips.net/video/wnrl3gkAbGs/видео.html This site gives the FwonkBeta by Mr. Black a longer evaluation as I feel this envelop filter is in the top 3 filters.
I've never been able to use the HP on the QTRON with my bass. It doesn't catch it. I can get it to pick up on the middle setting if I use a boost. Looks like I need to turn the drive down?
That being said.... I was hoping this video would explain more about the pedals.... what IS the Q?
Xotic's Robotalk is the best!
Q-Tron Plus beats them all. Moog sounds great too thou
hi
Williams Kevin Lee Michelle Anderson Nancy
cap meets tosin abasi!
Is one of those guys suffering from constipation.
They all sound like crap unless you run them parallel to the dry sognal
No mutron?
Come on
That "Spatial Delivery" pedal is one scary piece of shit! No thanks! LOL! :D I'll take the Moogerfooger or the MXR please!
Damn the Accufuncture sounded like shit. What a dissapointment for a nice looking pedal
4 strings is all you need
Subjective to the player
Whats wrong with you people What you don't check you video's?
early!
Pretty useless reviewing an envelope filter on an active bass
Comment makes no sense sorry
These always sound so terrible and cheesy
Cringeworthy
